Metaphor of Disease and Its Psychopathological Analysis in Eileen Chang's Novels

In modern Chinese novels, disease is a common theme, and different works also show different flavors. This paper mainly studies the metaphors behind the characters' diseases and the characters' morbid psychology in Eileen Chang's three representative works Flowers Wither, Golden Lock and Red Rose and White Roses. Through the research, the author can find that Eileen Chang's disease writing is related to her personal loveless family life experience, her love for tragic aesthetics and the aesthetic tendency of morbid things, and the popularity of medical treatment in society at that time. At the same time, this paper analyzes the cruel living situation of women revealed in the female diseases in his works. Whether it is arranged marriage or new-style marriage, women have lost the right to choice and autonomy in marriage, so the unhappiness of their marriage life is also the main reason for the disease. Finally, through the analysis of specific characters' diseases, the article shows the pathological psychological state of the characters' hearts under the disease in detail, and analyzes the relationship between them. Through the study, the author can find that the disease in Eileen Chang's works is not only as simple as the disease itself, but also shows a social style and the pathological state and psychology of the characters living in it.

Reconsidering Translation From a Bourdieusian Sociological Perspective: A Case Study of the English Translation of Luotuo Xiangzi

Translation activities are not isolated, and an increasing number of researchers have applied sociological theories to translation studies, which contributions to interdisciplinary research in translation. Luotuo Xiangzi, written by Lao She, is one of the best modern Chinese novels. Its four English translation versions and translation activities that span decades have deeply interacting with various parts of society. Based on Bourdieu’s sociological theories of the “field”, “capital” and “habitus”, this case study of the English translations of Luotuo Xiangzi explored the relationship and interaction between the translator and other participants (participating groups) in the translation activity. It was discovered that the translation activity could reveal the translator’s habitus and be greatly influenced by interactions with various fields of society and by the capital engaged in the translation activity of Luotuo Xiangzi, providing proof of the explanatory and guiding power of Bourdieu’s sociological theory in translation studies. This paper tries to enrich the interdisciplinary research of sociology and translation and offers additional references for the translation and global dissemination of translated literature, particularly for Chinese literature.

중국어 기쁨표현의 한국어 번역 연구 - 은유와 환유를 중심으로 -

Conceptual metaphor and conceptual metonymy are essential mechanisms for expressing human emotions. Joy is one of the representative emotions of human beings, and it has the universality of language in the way it is understood through physiological reflection and specific objects. However, since the expression of joy reflects the culture, there is a difference in the expressive effect. Due to these differences in expression methods for joy, it is difficult for Chinese Korean learners to translate expressions of joy into Korean naturally. Therefore, this study intends to analyze what is an appropriate translation method through Chinese-Korean literary translation. The study is intended to help the Chinese Korean learners understand the difference in joy expression between Korean and Chinese, thereby helping them understand cultural differences and creating readable translated texts. In this study, a parallel corpus of the Chinese-Korean translation of 2 modern Chinese novels, "LOVE O2O(微微一笑很倾城)" (2009) and "To Live(活着)" (2007) was built. Furthermore, 500 metaphors and metonymous expressions with expressions of joy were selected from the text, and the Korean translation method of the translated version was analyzed.

Correlation between context and language at a high delicate level: taking Chinese emotion 喜欢 as an example

Abstract In systemic functional linguistics, a delicate system of context is necessary for providing specific and checkable criteria for language choice. However, due to the complexity and vastness of the context system, little work has been undertaken for its extension, which results in a general and loose interpretation of the correlation between context and language. This study seeks to fill this gap by anchoring itself at a specific contextual domain concerning social conventions on emotion, namely the system of emotion. The correlation is addressed from two perspectives: a top-down perspective to explore how three crucial emotional features are realized via the selections from two linguistic systems, namely speech function and appraisal, and a bottom-up perspective to reveal the value construed by the realizational patterns for each feature. From a selected data corpus of modern Chinese novels, 8 realizational patterns are found, based on which the value systems of the emotional features are constructed; the Resonance Hypothesis is proposed to explain the process of correlation. The findings suggest that a delicate context system can explicitly demonstrate the correlation between context and language, thus theoretically strengthening their tie.

Gao Xingjian (1940 - ) is one of the most outstanding writers that was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2000. His novel - Soul Mountain - marks his name as it can be considered one of the “pioneers” of modern Chinese novels. Soul Mountain is exceptional due to its unique narrative which revolves around autobiographical elements of “the traveler - the quest - the storyteller”. The reflection of the stories told by several protagonists: “I” - “You” - “He” elevates the above mentioned auto-biographical elements into artistic representations. So far, there exists a number of researches on the art of the narrative in Soul Mountain which already yields certain results. Therefore, this essay is aimed to explore Soul Mountain from a different angle in which the representation structure of “the traveler”, “the quest” and “the storyteller” would be profoundly analyzed to cast light on the novel’s narrative structure.

<em>Fortress Besieged</em>: Cynicism and Qian Zhongshu's Narrative of the Modern Chinese “Self”

As a means of national salvation and mass education, modern Chinese literature gained its cultural and social prominence during the May Fourth Period. However, although one of the most celebrated modern Chinese novels, Fortress Besieged has long been ignored by critics after 1949 and only began to receive renewed attention in the 1980s, largely due to the relaxing political milieu. The novel's marginalization following 1949 occurred largely because Qian did not align himself with his more reform-minded contemporaries and represents a different strand of literary modernism. With a soul significantly enriched by his cosmopolitan visions and literary sensibilities, Qian can be said to possess an alternative understanding of modernity, one which makes this novel a counterdiscourse during an age when literature of the War of Resistance and the Revolutionary Literature constituted the hegemonic narrative modes. Most notably, in Fortress Besieged, Qian de-idealizes the "new women" who are often portrayed as active forces in various progressive projects during and after the May Fourth Movement. Moreover, by calling into question the lofty ideals and taken-for-granted conceptions lauded by his contemporaries, Qian also reveals a profound cynicism, which is itself another factor that made the novel's acceptance politically untenable during the revolutionary period. Thus, in reconsidering the literary space carved out by Qian, we can deepen our understanding of not only the formation of the author's own subjectivities, but also the development of modern Chinese literature more generally.

作为方法的“时间” : 论中国现代小说的发生

It is very meaningful for us to put the novels of late Qing Dynasty and May 4th together and examine “the occurrence of modern Chinese novels” around the “time” of the novels. Modernity is a problem of time. Thinking around “time” is a return to the problem itself, which should expand and extend the topic of “the occurrence of modern Chinese novels”. The occurrence of modern Chinese novels is closely related to the narrative time and modernity time of novels. From the perspective of narrative time, whether it is from “full time” to “cross section”, or from “pause” to “omission”, or the psychological presentation of narrative time, all play an important role in the occurrence of modern Chinese novels, and the psychological presentation of narrative time in novels is also very important. With the emergence of psychological impression novels, the plot timeline of novels has almost completely collapsed, the structure of novels has shifted from plot time to psychological space, from the outside to the inside, and the novels have completed the modern transformation from writing stories to writing people, from the outside to the inside. From the perspective of modernity time, compared with the time-space form of novels, the changes of modernity time in novels are more lively and rapid. The growth process of human beings and the evolution process of events are put into concrete time-space and into a linear development time-space. The character changes of characters and the causal development of events all exist in the time process. Therefore, the characters in novels have real psychological and life activity tracks, which is fundamental to the promotion of the modern transformation of Chinese novels.

World Literature as Event: Ibsen and Modern Chinese Fiction

Abstract Based on Franco Moretti's conception of distant reading, I propose that world literature is not an object, but is rather an act or event that is temporally and spatially constituted, destined to undergo a process of changes and transformations in different local contexts. World literature should address at least three major issues: first, the otherness of the foreign author or his texts in local context; second, the inventiveness of the specific narratives in the local writings; third, the creative power of the works for their readers and the society they live in. In this article, Ibsen in China is studied from a new perspective of event in world literature. The focus of the analysis is on the event of female protagonists reading A Doll's House in modern Chinese novels. Questions analyzed include: Who are those people reading A Doll's House in modern Chinese novels? How do the Chinese female protagonists perform as Nora and fight for their independence and freedom? What impact do the fictional works have on the New Culture Movement in China? Moreover, how does this study of Ibsen and Nora in China provoke new reflections on world literature?
