The impact of digital technology deployment on mitigating supply chain disruptions: Evidence from Chinese automotive manufacturers during the COVID-19 crisis

Digital supply chain management provided opportunities to mitigate the effects of supply chain disruptions on business activities. Unfortunately, the real-life impacts of digital technology deployment in mitigating supply chain disruptions and enhancing resilience have not been fully evaluated, and it is unclear which digital technology deployment strategy had the greatest effect on firms' operations. This research seeks to fill this gap using data from the annual reports of 123 Chinese automotive manufacturers during the COVID-19 crisis. We focus on two dimensions of digital technology deployment: amount and category. Metrics describing financial and operational performance are used to estimate firms' overall performance. Additionally, this research presents econometric models to assess the effects of digital technology deployment from the two aforementioned dimensions. We found that the deployment of digital technology assets could mitigate negative effects on firms' performance during COVID-19 crisis, albeit with a time lag. Different categories of digital technology deployment, however, had different effects on firms' financial and operational performance. Digital front-end technologies were more efficient in improving the financial performance of the automotive firms. Meanwhile, digital base technologies were more impactful on the firms’ operational performance. This research contributes to the body of research on digital SCM and supply chain risk management by examining the effect of digital technologies from a dynamic capability perspective.

 The study examines supply chain risk management (SCRM) practices in healthcare establishments in Algeria and Ukraine, comparing countries with differing healthcare systems. The research aims to identify disparities in SCRM approaches and their consequences. Results reveal that while both countries prioritize technology for predictive analysis, Algerian managers emphasize collaboration with other institutions.

Corporate social responsibility and firm value during the COVID-19 pandemic

PurposeThis study aims to investigate the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on the relationship between buyer firms' corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities toward business partners, such as suppliers, and firm value. The study further explores the role of ownership structure in shaping this relationship.Design/methodology/approachThe authors employ a difference-in-differences (DID) regression method to distinguish between the periods before and during the COVID-19 crisis. The authors utilize data from firms listed on the Korean stock market between 2013 and 2020.FindingsThe results show that CSR activities for suppliers have a positive impact on the value of buyer firms. Furthermore, this positive relationship is amplified during the COVID-19 period. In addition, the study finds that the positive relationship is more prominent in samples with higher ownership by controlling shareholders or foreign investors.Originality/valueOverall, this study makes a valuable contribution to the existing literature by examining the positive effects of CSR activities on firm value and by shedding light on the role of ownership structure in influencing these effects. Additionally, the study emphasizes the significance of CSR activities for business partners in mitigating supply chain disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Managing Supply Chain Disruptions in Nigerian Seaport Companies

In Nigeria, seaport companies have lost significant revenue since 2000 because of supply chain disruptions. If not mitigated, supply chain disruptions at Nigerian seaports will significantly affect organizational output and profitability. The purpose of this research was to explore strategies some seaport business leaders use to mitigate supply chain disruptions in Lagos, Nigeria. Supply chain management theory was the conceptual framework for this single case study. Data were collected using semistructured interviews with 4 participants from a Nigerian seaport company that adopted successful strategies to mitigate supply chain disruptions and review of company documents for methodological triangulation. Using thematic analysis, the 5 primary themes were corruption, seaport congestion, bureaucratic bottleneck, equipment failures, and employee disputes.

Modeling and mitigating supply chain disruptions as a bilevel network flow problem

Years of globalization, outsourcing and cost cutting have increased supply chain vulnerability calling for more effective risk mitigation strategies. In our research, we analyze supply chain disruptions in a production setting. Using a bilevel optimization framework, we minimize the total production cost for a manufacturer interested in finding optimal disruption mitigation strategies. The problem constitutes a convex network flow program under a chance constraint bounding the manufacturer’s regrets in disrupted scenarios. Thus, in contrast to standard bilevel optimization schemes with two decision-makers, a leader and a follower, our model searches for the optimal production plan of a manufacturer in view of a reduction in the sequence of his own scenario-specific regrets. Defined as the difference in costs of a reactive plan, which considers the disruption as unknown until it occurs, and a benchmark anticipative plan, which predicts the disruption in the beginning of the planning horizon, the regrets allow measurement of the impact of scenario-specific production strategies on the manufacturer’s total cost. For an efficient solution of the problem, we employ generalized Benders decomposition and develop customized feasibility cuts. In the managerial section, we discuss the implications for the risk-adjusted production and observe that the regrets of long disruptions are reduced in our mitigation strategy at the cost of shorter disruptions, whose regrets typically stay far below the risk threshold. This allows a decrease of the production cost under rare but high-impact disruption scenarios.

More specifically, emerging and existing factory-floor level technologies (including robotics, machine tools, additive processes, automation, and sensors) are being fused with networking (both wired and wireless) and analysis technologies to generate more timely, accurate, and appropriate communication. This communication directly enables more intelligent sensing, monitoring, and control of the overall manufacturing system, including its constituent processes and sub-systems. Organizations that are adopting a smart manufacturing approach have become more flexible and adaptive to address changing customer demands, integrate new technologies, mitigate supply chain disruptions, and better utilize their human workforce. Prognostics and Health Management (PHM), in the context of Smart Manufacturing, focuses on the technologies and capabilities that enable health monitoring, diagnostics, and prognostics to promote greater intelligence in maintenance and control activities.

Global Supply Chains in Response to COVID-19: Adopting a Real Options Mindset

Businesses and governments may have been overconfident in their ability to react efficiently to black swan consequences. COVID-19 levied unforeseen isolation and border closings threatening the survival of global supply chains and the bankruptcy of governments and organizations alike. As a response to this challenge, our proposal takes a real options approach to mitigate supply chain disruptions by developing regional partnerships outside of densely populated areas. Its inherent novelty is twofold: (1) it anticipates survival uncertainties by securing the continued production of goods and services worldwide and (2) it recognizes a change in the relationship’s dynamic between global and regional actors.

Optimal Product Substitution and Dual Sourcing Strategy considering Reliability of Production Lines

Most of the supply chain literature assumes that product substitution is an effective method to mitigate supply chain disruptions and that all production lines either survive or are disrupted together. Such assumptions, however, may not hold in the real world: (1) when there is a shortfall of all products, product substitution may be inadequate unless it is paired with other strategies such as dual sourcing; and (2) production lines do not survive forever and may fail. To relax such assumptions, this paper therefore investigates the situations that the manufacturer may optimize substitution policy and dual sourcing policy to cope with supply chain disruptions. The paper obtains and compares the optimal policies for both deterministic and stochastic demands. A real-world case is also studied to verify the effectiveness of the proposed model.

The impact of R&D investment on mitigating supply chain disruptions: Empirical evidence from U.S. firms

The purpose of this paper is to examine the moderating effect of a firm's R&D investment in mitigating supply chain disruptions. We use four categories of disruption risks in a supply chain: demand, process, supply, and environmental. Building upon dynamic capability theory, we examine the relationships among a firm's R&D investment, supply chain disruption risk drivers, supply chain performance, and firm performance, using data collected from manufacturing and service organizations in the U.S. Our findings show that a firm's R&D investment can be regarded as enhancing the firm's resilience capability. R&D investment significantly mitigates the effects of process disruption, supply disruption, and demand disruption on firm performance. R&D investment significantly mitigates the effects of process disruption and environmental disruption on supply chain performance. Our study provides one of the early empirical findings of the role of a firm's investment in innovation as a means of improving the firm's resilience to supply chain disruptions.

An examination of the impact of flexibility and agility on mitigating supply chain disruptions

This paper examines the effect of flexibility and agility on improving supply chain responsiveness. We examine a supply chain with multiple sites, multiple transportation channels, and multiple product planning, over multiple periods, under supply risk and demand risk. Using a numerical example, we determine the relationship between three objective functions related to responsiveness, risk, and the cost of new and seasonal products, then discuss the impact of flexibility and agility on mitigating supply chain disruptions. To show a trade-off among objective functions in our numerical example, we solve the multi-objective mixed integer programming (MOMIP) model using three multi-objective optimization methods: the weighted goal programming (WGP) method, the augmented ε-constraint (AUGMECON) method, and the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-Ⅱ). Our findings help decision makers with these two tasks: anticipate how much improvement in flexibility and agility will lead to an improvement in responsiveness; and create an investment plan to minimize the negative impact of supply chain disruptions by an examination of the trade-offs among responsiveness, risk, and cost. The results show that the NSGA-Ⅱ method outperforms the AUGMECON method in several metric indexes: the spacing metric, the diversity metric, and simple additive weighting.

Real options approach to evaluate postponement as supply chain disruptions mitigation strategy

The purpose of this paper is to assess the value of postponement as strategy for mitigating supply chain disruptions. To accomplish this objective, we develop a real option computational model that quantifies the value of postponement in mitigating both supply and demand disruptions by taking into account the value of managerial flexibility to decide whether exploiting or not the strategy, if and when disruptions occur, and whenever product differentiation proves valuable based on information available at that time. Numerical experiments show the importance of incorporating an option valuation method when pricing the value of postponement. This ensures managers implement postponement only when it is valuable, thus avoiding burdening the company with its initial sunk costs. By modelling the postponement implementation under different conditions, we identify the situations in which postponement performs better as supply chain disruptions mitigation strategy. We derive the operational configurations, in terms of decoupling point position, and external conditions, in terms of riskiness of the environment, which make the postponement an effective mitigation strategy.

Effectiveness of resilience capabilities in mitigating disruptions: leveraging on supply chain structural complexity

PurposeThis study aims to investigate the influence of supply chain (SC) complexity on the effectiveness of resilience capabilities in mitigating SC disruptions. Hypotheses about direct and moderating influences of complexity on resilience capabilities and performance change after disruption are built and quantitatively tested.Design/methodology/approachPartial least square-based structural equation modelling with formative constructs was used as an overall approach. Secondary data on SC disruptions, related performance change and resilience practices were collected from multiple sources through a predefined procedure. The collected data were systematically encoded prior to performing statistical analysis.FindingsSC structural complexity is found to have a significant positive relation with performance improvement after disruption, along with resilience capability; it also positively moderates the resilience–performance link.Research limitations/implicationsThe SC complexity factors the authors considered in this study do not include dynamic forms because of the nature of data collected. Future research may attempt to include and test whether the results of this study also hold when additional complexity parameters are taken into account.Practical implicationsManagers are often trying to reduce SC complexity. This study implies that some level of complexity is beneficial also for a better recovery of operational performance affected because of disruption. Resilience capabilities become more effective when leveraged on complexity in the SC.Originality/valueThis is the first study to empirically investigate the influence of SC complexity on the resilience–performance link.
