AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN WRITING REPORT TEXT AT ELEVENTH GRADE SMAS TAMANSISWA SINGOSARI MEDAN

<p>This study, titled <em>“An Analysis of Students’ Grammatical Errors in Writing Report Text at Eleventh Grade SMAS Tamansiswa Singosari Medan”.</em> The study aimed to find out what types of grammatical errors in the students' report text writing and the causes of the errors. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method, focusing on 11th-grade students from the IPS2 class at SMAS Tamansiswa Singosari Medan. Data collection was conducted through documentation and interviews. The analysis followed the steps outlined by Gass and Selinker, which included collecting the data, identifying students’ errors, classifying errors, and analyzing cause of error. The findings revealed four types of errors in the students' report texts: omission, addition, misformation, and misordering, totaling 44 errors. Specifically, there were 10 omission errors (22.72%), 13 addition errors (29.54%), 12 misformation errors (27.27%), and 9 misordering errors (20.45%). The most frequent error type was addition, with the total 13 or 29.54% errors. The causes of these errors were identified as carelessness, influence from the first language, and issues with translation.</p>

Identifying Pronunciation Errors in English Among Postgraduate Students: A Phonetical Perspective

This research aims to address two primary problem statements: first, to identify the types of English pronunciation errors made by third-semester students in the postgraduate English language education program; and second, to determine the sources of these pronunciation errors among the same cohort of students. This research used a combination of phonetic and quantitative error analysis to identify the pronunciation errors among postgraduate students. The results showed that there were 16.16% of omission errors, 11.97% addition errors, 71.85% of word formation errors, and students 0% of word ordering error. For the sources of errors in the pronunciation of all students during the proposal seminar, researcher found that there was incomplete application of rule is source from omission errors such as letter /g/, /ʃ/, /dʒ/, /ə/, /ɪ/, /ɑː/, /t/, and /h/. The next source of errors false concepts hypothesized is source from addition errors such as letter /ɒ/, /ʌ/, /s/, /g/, /e/, /ɑː/, /u/, /w/, /a/, /j/, and /r/. There is also overgeneralization is source from misformation errors such as letter /aʊ/, /ɔː/, /h/, /ʒ, etc. Meanwhile for ignorance of rule restriction is source from misodering errors all students for misodering did not make that mistake.

An Analysis of College Students’ Morphological Error in Translating Recount Text from Indonesia to English Using Surface Strategy Taxonomy

This study aims to determine what morphological level errors appear in college students' translation of recount texts from Indonesian to English based on Dulay's theory of surface strategy taxonomy. Referring on this theory, errors are divided into omission, addition, mis-formation and mis-ordering. This study was conducted in a descriptive qualitative method. The population was the members of UKM Bahasa Universitas Islam Negeri Raden Intan Lampung with the sample used in this study were 15 members of UKM Bahasa taken with random sampling technique by sharing the Google Form link to all the population and only collected 15 participants. The data of this study were participants' translation results in translating recount text from Indonesian to English, which they sent in the Google Form link. The result of this study shows that there are 130 morphological errors made by students in translating recount text. The most common morphological error is inflectional error, which appears 37 times; the least common is pronoun error, and the auxiliary error, which appears 6 times. Meanwhile, the most common error in the surface level of taxonomy strategy is mis-formation error which appears 58 times, followed by omission error 42 times and addition error 30 times. In this study, researchers did not find any mis-ordering errors that appeared.

An error analysis on translation made by the sixth semester students of English Department of IKIP Gunungsitoli

The Objective off this study are to describe (1) the kinds of error made by the 6th semester students of English Department when translating Indonesia text into English, (2) the dominant error made by students, 3) how students made the error when translating Indonesia text into English text. This study used the descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this research is the 6th semester students and the object in this research is all the errors on translation made by students. The data collected to answer all the research problems are all the errors made by students. Based on data analysis, the writer finds that 1) students made error in Omission, Addition, Mis-formation, and Mis-ordering errors, 2) students made more dominant error in Mis-formation error, 3) students made error by: a) omitting an item that must appear in well-formed utterance, b) adding an item that must not appear in well-formed utterance, c) using the incorrect morpheme or group or structure, d) doing the incorrect placement of a morpheme or group of morpheme. The conclusion of this study is, the students are lack of vocabulary when doing translation. It is suggestion to the students to enrich their vocabulary and to the lecturer to enrich their students’ vocabularies by giving them daily new vocabularies.

An Error Analysis Of Undergraduate Students’ English Pronunciation

English Pronunciation error cannot be underestimated. Especially for students who majoring English in Higher Education. Thus, the purpose of this research was to find out the types of pronunciation Error which were consonant and vowel sounds made by the second semester students of English Education Department of Megarezky University based on surface strategy taxonomy and the dominant errors between vowels and consonants. The research design was descriptive qualitative with a focuse on pronunciation errors. The result of this study indicate that there were 70 errors made by the second semester students while reading aloud an english short text. It was found 37 errors on pronouncing vowels (52.85%) and 33 errors on pronuncing consonants (47.14%) in the linguistics category. While, there were 5 omission errors (7.14%), 8 addition errors (11.42%), 48 misformation errors (68.57%), and 9 misordering errors (12.85%) in the surface strategy taxonomy. It can be concluded that the pronunciation errors were made by the second semester students of English Education Department of Megarezky University namely, pronunciation and errors based on linguistic catogery taxonomy is a misformation errors.

Surface Strategy Taxonomy in Errors Analysis: Made by the Students of Senior High School

This research was conducted to find out and analyze the grammatical errors in translating Indonesian procedure text into English. The aim of this research was to find out and analyze the errors and their types. This problem was categorized under grammatical errors using four types of Dullay’s Strategy Taxonomy, they are omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. The researcher used descriptive qualitative method. Generally, there are several techniques to collect data needed such as the researcher prepared two Indonesian procedure texts, then gave the texts to the students. The researcher used test technique to collect the data needed and the test was done for 60 minutes in class. The data were presented in the form of table and ordered based on each of the translation problems to make it easier for the analysis. The result of the data analysis reveals that the problems which occurred in the students’ worksheet are related to the types of grammatical errors (33,48 %) omission errors, (4,21 %) addition errors, (4,44%) misformation errors, (57,84%) misordering errors. The most identified error belongs to misordering error which is given the highest score to the total number of errors identified (57,84%) and the least identified one belongs to addition error category (4,21%). The fact indicates that there are some students who have adequate knowledge in translating the texts. In other words, there are also students who have problems in translating Indonesian procedure texts into English

Error Analysis on Students’ Descriptive Writing

Nur Hidayati, 2023. Error Analysis on Students’ Descriptive Writing at Madrasah Aliyah PMU Sanrobone Takalar Regency. Guided by Syamsiarna Nappu and Erwin Akib. This research focused on students’ errors in writing descriptive text. This study aimed to know the types of error were made by eleventh-grade students at Madrasah Aliyah PMU Sanrobone Takalar Regency academic year 2023/2024 in writing descriptive text and to find out the most students’ dominant error in writing descriptive text. This research was conducted using descriptive quantitative study with case study design as quantitative data used. The population of this research is 18 students. Then the data of the research were collected by using test about writing descriptive text. Based on the data analysis result, students made four types of errors based on surface strategy taxonomy. Those were omission, addition, mis-formation, mis-ordering. Students’ highest error frequency is mis-formation error with 219 total number of errors or (36%) total of errors. Omission error with 112 or (19%) total of errors, addition error with 190 or (32%) total of errors. The lowest frequency of error made by the students is mis-ordering error with 80 or (13%) total of errors.

NARRATIVE WRITING ABILITY PERFORMED BY STUDENTS OF ISLAMIC HIGH SCHOOL AL UKHUWAH SUKOHARJO: A SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION CASE

<p class="Keyword">The research conducted at MA Al Ukhuwah Sukoharjo aimed to explore second language acquisition among high school students, specifically focusing on error types and factors influencing these errors with a gender-based analysis. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative approach and the four stages of analysis—domain, taxonomic, componential, and cultural theme—the study identified 841 errors, with misformation errors comprising the majority at 51.6%. Female students exhibited a higher error rate at 80.38% compared to their male counterparts (19.62%). Causes of errors, such as overgeneralization, incomplete rule application, incorrect hypothesis conception, and ignorance of rule restrictions, were identified, with the latter significantly impacting language mastery. These findings provide valuable insights for educators, informing strategies to address challenges in mastering English, particularly in areas like tense usage, sentence structure, diction, and conjunctions among high school students at MA Al Ukhuwah Sukoharjo.</p>

ERROR ANALYSIS ON SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT IN NARRATIVE WRITING TEXT MADE BY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

This study aims to find out and analyze students' mistakes in writing narrative text and what causes these mistakes. The method used in this research is a qualitative research design with a case study method by applying descriptive analysis. In this study, the object being analyzed was the subject-verb agreement error in writing narrative text in class XI IPA 2 of the tenth grade of MA Miftahul Qulub Polagan Galis Pamekasan. The problem of this research is to find the types of errors that commonly, the causes of errors, and the frequency of errors that students made in using subject-verb agreement in writing narrative text. The errors are classified into four primary groups based on the surface strategy taxonomy of superficial strategies cited by (Irwansyah,2017): omission, addition, misformation, and misordering errors. The researcher found those errors in the students' work in writing narrative text. It can be seen that each student made one to three errors, which are omission, addition, and misformation errors. From the results of the frequency of omission errors 53%, 39% addition errors, 7% misformation errors, and 0% misordering errors. errors that are often made by students, namely the 53% omission error has a higher percentage than the errors that occur in other types. Based on the results of this research, the researcher hopes that it will become important data for the language community, especially those who are interested in analyzing errors in English lessons. This research is expected to increase the reader's knowledge about good sentence patterns in the structure of the English language. ERROR ANALYSIS OF USING SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE IN STUDENTS WRITING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT AT THE TENTH GRADERS OF SMKN 2 KUDUS

The purpose of this study was to identify and describe the factors of student errors in using the simple present tense in writing descriptive text by class X students of SMK N 2 KUDUS. The researcher took 15 respondents from the lowest rank in the class as respondents from the document, and 5 respondents from the descriptive text results who made the most errors as respondents from the interview.The research design is a qualitative design. Data were collected from descriptive texts made by respondents as document analysis and interviews. Then the researcher analyzed and classified the errors in the student's work based on the types of errors according to Dulay (1982) which consisted of four categories, namely Omission, Misformation, addition, and misordering. To find out the factors of student error, the researcher analyzed the results of the respondents' interviews with Carelessness, Translation, and First Language. From the results of the study, the researcher found 45 errors in analyzing the simple present tense in writing descriptive text. The most common types of errors in analyzing are 25 errors in misformation errors, and the percentage is 55.5%. There are 14 mistakes in omission, and the percentage is 31.1%. Addition errors and misordering errors are at least 3 errors, and the percentage is 6.7%. The researcher found factors causing errors in the use of the simple present tense, consisting of carelessness or carelessness 28 errors or 80%, translation 6 errors or 17.1%, and first language at least one error, the percentage is 2.9%.

Taking Advantage of L2 Errors in EFL Learners’ Written Language Production

This qualitative study investigates the errors committed by Turkish EFL learners and the rate of spelling mistakes to grammar errors in learners’ paragraphs. In order to examine these issues, 19 participants studying at a private high school in Turkey took part in this study. The qualitative data were collected through students’ paragraphs written in English. A content and a descriptive analysis were employed to analyze the data. The grammar errors were categorized as errors of omission, addition, misformation, and double types throughout the scrutiny. The errors were related to various grammatical elements such as verbs, articles, verb inflections, noun inflections, and prepositions. The most frequent error category was omission, and the grammar elements the students errored most were prepositions. The results also showed that the students’ grammar errors were approximately two times more than their spelling mistakes. Given the results of this study, some suggestions for future studies and pedagogical implications were provided.

ERROR ANALYSIS ON STUDENTS WRITING TASK OF PERSONAL LETTERS

This study tries to classify and explain the many types of writing errors that were discovered in students' personal letters. The outcomes are ascertained by a qualitative data analysis employing the writing assignments of the students as the source of data. The Surface Strategy Taxonomy is used to pinpoint the errors. The researcher employs comparative analysis to divide the students into several skill levels when gathering data. The goal of this study is to identify mistakes committed by science-majoring eleventh-graders at SMAN 6 Kota Semarang, who number 36 students, in their personal letter assignment. The total of errors are 274 errors were classified in this study, with omission errors (f=131, 47.81%) as the most common. The second commonplace fault category was mis-formation errors (f=127, 46.35%). These categories were followed by addition error (f=9, 3.28%) and mis-order error (f=7, 2.55%). From the above result, we can conclude that the most prevalent mistakes among the learners is omission where they frequently eliminate sort of parts which needed in the full sentences due to the fact lack of English grammar knowledge.

An Analysis of Students' Grammatical Errors in Writing Recount Text at Eleventh Grade of SMA Negeri 5 Prabumulih

This thesis is entitled "An Analysis of Students' Grammatical Errors in Writing Recount Text at Eleventh Grade of SMA Negeri 5 Prabumulih". Formulation of the problems: What is the most common Grammatical Error made by the Eleventh Grade Students of SMA Negeri 5 Prabumulih? The research objectives were to find out the most common grammatical errors made by the eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Prabumulih. The population of this research was all the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 5 Prabumulih in the academic year of 2020/2021, which consisted of five classes with a total population of 133 students. The sample of this study was 30 students taken using the purposive sampling technique. The researchers used a descriptive qualitative method. The data was collected through a writing test for students to make a recount text. The analysis finding showed that the total of student errors was 76. There were 31 omission errors (42, 46%), 22 addition errors (30, 13%), 15 misformation errors (20, 54%), and 8 misordering errors (10, 95%). The researchers conclude that the highest percentage of errors was omission errors, which were the dominant errors.

THE STUDENTS’ ERRORS IN WRITING EXPOSITORY TEXT AT THE ELEVENTH GRADE OF MAS DARUL FALAH LANGGAPAYUNG

<p>This research aimed to analyze the students’ errors in writing expository text at the eleventh grade of MAS Darul Falah, Langga Payung, Labuhan Batu Selatan. In this research, the researcher used a qualitative method. The participant of this research were eleventh grade students of MAS Darul Falah. This research were conducted by snowball sampling and the researcher only took 10 students to write expository text based on the topic they choose in sixty minutes. The data were collected by giving test to the students. The data were analyzed by using documentary technique of Miles and Huberman. It was consisted of three steps were data reduction, and data display and conclusion drawing or verification. The result of the study indicating that there are some errors that made by students such as 6 errors of auxiliary verb (13%), 3 errors of subject (7%), 4 errors of conjuction (9%), 4 errors of article (9%), 3 errors of misformation (7%), 3 errors of misordering (7%), 5 errors of preposition(11%), 4 errors of singular and plural (9%), 2 errors of possesive adjective (4%), 6 errors of lexical (13%), 5 errors of capitalization (11%). From the frequency of each error types, errors of auxiliary verb and lexical errors was the errors which most frequently produced by the students. The students made errors because of their first language (Indonesian logical thinking), or we should say the students mother tongue interference (interlingual source), some students tried to translate the words one by one from Indonesian language into English without paying attention to the English structure rules, and intralingual errors that is caused of errors resulting from complicated system of the target language itself. Besides that the students still confused to arranging the sentences correctly, it is because of the lack of knowledge, grammar, pronoun or poor vocabularies and its use.</p>

An Analysis of Students’ Grammatical Errors in Writing Narrative Texts

Senior high school students still make a large number of errors related to grammar when they have writing narrative text. This study aimed to analyze the types of grammatical errors, identifying the sources of errors, and knowing the writing difficulties commonly faced by the tenth grade students of senior high school in their narrative texts. Descriptive qualitative method was used in this study. There were two kinds of data being used namely quantitative data and qualitative data. There were three different instruments applied such as, the teacher, writing test, and questionnaires. There were only 23 narrative texts collected and analyzed. Based on the error analysis, there were 308 grammatical errors classified into four types, namely ‘omission’, ‘misformation’, ‘addition’, and ‘misordering errors’ in students’ narrative texts. ‘Misformation errors’ are the biggest number of errors there were 131, the most dominant errors are ‘misformation of alternating form errors’. The errors occured because of the students’ interlingual and intralingual transfer. There were cognitive problem that made the students feel difficult in writing narrative texts because of their lack of knowledge of English grammar and vocabularies.

Grammarly and Grammatical Errors Reduction: A Case for Non-Native English Teachers’ Professional Learning

Grammar has long been a source of aggravation for anyone learning a second language, not just English language learners, but also non-native English teachers. People can now employ Grammarly to correct their grammar mistakes, owing to the sophistication of modern technology. The debate over whether teachers use Grammarly as part of their professional development is ongoing. The purpose of this study was to identify the grammatical errors made by non-native English teachers when writing narrative texts before and after Grammarly checked them. The participants in this qualitative study were 24 English teachers from the English Teacher Association of Buleleng Regency in Bali, Indonesia. This study employed the surface approach taxonomy to analyze the grammatical errors and interviewed the teachers to elicit factors that contribute to grammatical errors. This study found that the most common type of misformation error, specifically the alternating form error, was found in both Grammarly-corrected and Grammarly-uncorrected texts. Furthermore, intralingual factors were responsible for the majority of errors. The integration of Grammarly into teachers' professional learning is discussed.

Analyzing 7th Graders' Simple Present Errors in Descriptive Writing


 
 This study aims to investigate the dominant errors in the use of the simple present tense by seventh grade students when writing descriptive texts. The qualitative research method was employed, utilizing data analysis techniques to process the collected information. The population consisted of 45 students from two different classes at SMP Muhammadiyah 10, with 37 students' exercise results being analyzed. The data was obtained from students' written compositions in which they employed the simple present tense to describe various subjects. The findings revealed four major error types: omission (46.90%), addition (16.04%), misformation (27.16%), and misordering (9.90%). Among these, omission errors were the most prevalent, comprising 38 errors or 46.90% of the total. The results emphasize the need for targeted instruction and practice to enhance students' mastery of the simple present tense in writing descriptive texts, thereby improving their overall English language proficiency.

ERRORS OF CENTRAL SULAWESI STUDENTS IN WRITING RECOUNT TEXT

This research aimed to expose types and most frequent errors in recount writing of Central Sulawesi students in which focused on linguistics category taxonomy and limited on Morphology and Syntax. A descriptive qualitative and document analysis were employed in this research. The subjects of this research were 36 students of grade X MIPA 4 at SMA Negeri 1 Palu. The result of the research presents that there were 277 errors in students’ writing: 123 or 44.40% omission errors, 20 or 7.22% addition errors, 134 or 48.38% misformation errors, but there were no found misordering errors on the students’ writing. According to the percentage of errors occurence, the most frequent error was misformation errors. The students frequently misused the formations of pronoun, preposition, main verb, auxiliary verb be, copula be, auxiliary verb have, modal auxiliary, subject-verb agreement, and verb-and-verb construction. It implies that the students writing still presents many kinds of error in their writing and the teacher should discuss more about it.

Error Analysis Students’ Ability in Using Regular and Irregular Verb at the Second Grade of SMP Satria Dharma Perbaungan

This research aims to analyze student errors made by second grade students of SMP Satria Dharma Perbaungan in using regular and irregular verbs. This research aims to obtain the types of errors in identifying regular and irregular verbs in the past form and to find out the causes of why students make mistakes. This type of research is research with qualitative methods. This research was conducted by following error analysis procedures, starting with sample selection, identification, elaboration, explanation and assessment of errors. The data sources in this research were 10 students from the second grade of SMP Satria Dharma Perbaungan. The research data was obtained by doing observations, giving questionnaires and giving tests to students. From the error analysis process, it was found that students made three types of errors, namely ommission, addition, and misformation. The results of omission errors were 23.34%, addition errors were 26.66% and the most errors occurred at 50% misformation errors. According to the theory of Ellis and Barkhuizen, students' errors are caused by interlingual transfer and intralingual transfer.

An Analysis of Grammatical Errors Made by the Students of English Literature Department

This research aims to identify grammatical errors made by the students of the English Literature department of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan and to describe the process of the occurrence of grammatical errors. This research is a descriptive study that uses a qualitative method. The data are the writing assignments of second-semester students of the English Literature department of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan of the 2018 - 2019 academic year. The researcher read the writings of the students, then wrote and classified the errors made by the students into types of errors due to interlingual and intralingual transfers. This research uses the descriptive analysis method to describe the types of errors. The results show that the types of errors due to the interlingual and intralingual transfer are omission errors, addition errors, misordering errors, and misformation errors. The results of this study are expected to be the basis for minimizing grammatical errors in the English teaching and learning process, especially for writing in English. The results can also be used as a basis for compiling course materials, writing textbooks or modules, especially for making exercises that focus on errors that often occur, to prevent similar errors that will occur in the future.
