Dueling Legacies: Which Sultan Deserves Credit for Oman's Oil-Driven Development?

This article argues that Sultan Sa'id bin Taymur played a more fundamental role in developing Oman than what is commonly portrayed. With British backing, Sultan Sa'id centralized control over the contested territories where oil was discovered, despite frequent attacks on exploration teams. When Sa'id was over-thrown in 1970, he relinquished a young but healthy oil sector to his son, Qaboos, paving the way for enormous advances in Omani life. Despite the credit he gets for this transformation, Sultan Qaboos's initial years in power were marked by mis management and declines in production, and poor administration left Oman unable to fully capitalize on the oil price booms of the 1970s.

This article aims to describe: 1) explain the management of the Management Information System, 2) explain the decision making based on data in the Management information system. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. Data was obtained through observation, interviews, and documentation. All collected data were then analyzed using data in a few stages from reducing data, presenting data, to drawing evaluation conclusions. Research informants were the Headmaster of MI Darussalam, the School operator, and Teachers. The results showed that. The Role of Management Information System in Decision Making in MI Darussalam: (1) The components in the Management Information System has been fulfilled, (2) management of management information systems centered on two people, (3) The flow of MIS management in MI Darussalam is the process of data input, data processing, and data storage, (4) The head of the Madrasah puts forward the principle of deliberation to make decisions. (5) The Management Information System is used as a database for making decisions and making program activities. (6) There is a Decisive Support System (DSS) that is used, but it is still constrained.

Rapport-management strategies in conflict situations

Chuka Ononye (University of Nigeria) The (mis)management of rapport amongst groups in Niger Delta (ND) communities has become a significant issue, which Ahmed Yerima’s Hard Ground (HG) depicts as having the capacity to aid or control the conflicts in the region. Linguistic studies on Yerima’s drama from the perspective of pragmatics have tended to use pragmatic acts to identify the discourse value of proverbs and functions of characters’ utterances but have not accounted for the politeness strategies utilised for rapport management, especially in conflict situations. This article, drawing on a rapport management model of politeness and aspects of speech act discourse, identifies the face, sociality rights, and interactional goals that characterise the conflict-motivated dialogues sampled in HG, and reveals the rapport management (RM) strategies through which these are managed in the text. Three conflict situations can be observed as prompting different RM strategies: cause-effect identification (CEI), militancy support (MSP), and disagreement (DSG) situations. CEI is marked by incriminating (involving eliciting and informing acts) and exonerating (including complimenting and acknowledging acts) strategies; MSP is indexed by strategies of persuasion (realised with face-enhancing/threatening acts), whereas DSG is typified by requesting (featuring explicit head acts and alerters) and blaming strategies (including insulting and threatening, aggravating moves). Generally, the requesting, blaming, and exonerating strategies are largely used by the ND youth in HG to probe, threaten, or disagree on specific issues, while the incriminating and persuasion strategies are mainly employed by the women to indict, influence, and predict future actions. The study of RM in the conflict situations depicted in the play sheds light on the often neglected cause of conflicts in contemporary Africa.

The human (in)security trap: how European border(ing) practices condemn migrants to vulnerability

This article explores the experience of migrants at Europe’s borders and beyond building upon the notion of human security—or rather its antithesis insecurity—and looking at it afresh through the lenses of border studies. It introduces the concept of ‘human insecurity trap’ as a tool to grasp the insecurities and vulnerabilities of people-on-the-move and the different border(ing)s, barriers and confinements they stem from. The article argues that smuggling to and across Europe, as well as EU and MS policy apparatus, entraps migrants into a spiral of human insecurity which unfolds at different levels and borders: at sea, in the ongoing struggle between smugglers and EU counter-smuggling operations; at the state border, where bureaucratic limbo and the (mis)management of shipwrecked migrants and asylum-seekers variously contend and combine with populist anti-migrant discourse; and across the EU, as practices of ‘re-smuggling’ and ‘secondary movement’ compete with practices of mobility limits, returns and border closures.

Evaluation of Irrigation Water Resources Availability and Climate Change Impacts—A Case Study of Mwea Irrigation Scheme, Kenya

Rice is an important cereal crop in Kenya, where it is mainly grown in the Mwea Irrigation Scheme, MIS. The serious challenges of MIS include low water use efficiency and limited available water resources. The objective of this study is to analyze the current and future irrigation water resource availability for the improvement of future water management. A Soil Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), a public domain software supported by the United States Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service in Bushland, TX, USA, was used to estimate the current and future water resources availability from the MIS’s main irrigation water supply sources (River Thiba and River Nyamindi). CropWat, a computer program developed by the Land and Water Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Rome, Italy, was used to estimate irrigation water requirements from 2013–2016 and into the future (2020–2060 and 2061–2099). Future climatic data for total available flow and irrigation requirement estimations were downloaded from three General Circulation Models (GCMs). The data was bias corrected and down-scaled (with observed data) using a Climate Change Toolkit, a toolkit for climate change analysis developed by the Water Weather and Energy Ecosystem, Zurich, Switzerland. The results indicated that the highest irrigation water deficits were experienced in July and August based on the existing cropping pattern. Under a proposed future pattern, estimates show that MIS will experience water deficits mainly from June to October and from January to February. This study recommends that MIS management should put into strong consideration the simulated future estimates in irrigation water availability for the improvement of water management.

QUANTITATIVE ASSESSMENT OF THE MIS COMPLIANCE ON ENTERPRISE PERFORMANCE AND EFFICIENCY: SURVEY OF FPB SERVICES DELIVERY BIDA NIGERIA

Accessing the nexus between MIS compliance and the academic institution performance is to a great extent dependent, reflective in the symbiotic relationship between the universities, polytechnics colleges, and its products, stakeholders and the outside world. The non-compliance in this unique feature resulted in the practical gap in institution performance due to the shortcoming of undermining MIS volatility, by limiting the elasticity rich potential of MIS compliance in Nigeria tertiary institution. Negate the exploration and maximization of the full benefits of MIS management, somewhat cannibalizing the manual methods. This divergence has found to be systematically responsible for the dwindling institution performance, in the area of supervision, admission, and graduation of students at much longer duration than projected in Nigeria and Sub-Sahara. It is the anchor of this study to investigate the impact of MIS on institutions performance focusing on the academic point of view at the Nigerian universities, polytechnics, that have a business college using a structural model to explore this inherent practical gap. The study revealed that cost/expense impact, people impact and performance effectiveness were positively related to enterprise performance and efficiency, growth, and development. The researcher strongly recommends the adoption of MIS compliance policy in a tertiary institution instead of depending on the old manual record management approach practised by Nigerian institutions of higher learning. Hence, this will improve the trust, confidence, and performance of every active participant in real currentissue/activities, either as a consumer, investor, suppliers, mediators, or in the process of input, processing and output stage, etc.

Water, anxiety, and the human niche: a study in Southern Province, Zambia

ABSTRACT Water (in)security is increasingly recognized as a global threat driven by population increase, water (mis)management, and global climate change. This is particularly true for Sub-Saharan Africa where the impacts of climate change are expected to negatively affect water access and availability. Projected increases in the frequency and intensity of droughts and floods and their potential impact on agriculture and water resources are especially worrisome. It is critical to understand how water disturbances are driving local level ecological changes – and the processes of adaptation undertaken by individuals and communities responding to these changes – to develop sustainable pathways through the global climate change landscape. Here I place local level nuances and processes at centre, using a niche construction heuristic framework and household level surveys (N = 224) to investigate locally relevant responses to water scarcity, with specific attention paid to social, psychosocial, and physical health impacts arising from anxiety about water. The findings here indicate that the anthroecological system in Choma – specifically the human-water subsystem – is internalizing negative impacts driven by water variations. Experienced anxieties from water issues have been shown to be strongly linked to household water needs not being met, time investments required for fetching water, suspected waterborne sickness, and household size.

Technical standardization of MIS management of children with pilonidal sinus disease using pediatric endoscopic pilonidal sinus treatment (PEPSiT) and laser epilation

PurposeThis study aimed to standardize the technique of pediatric endoscopic pilonidal sinus treatment (PEPSiT) associated with laser epilation. MethodsAll pediatric patients presenting with acute or chronic pilonidal sinus disease (PSD) who underwent PEPSiT in our institution over a 36-month period (July 2015–July 2018), were included in the study. Pre- and postoperative management, recurrence rate, postoperative pain, hospital stay, analgesic requirements, and patient satisfaction levels were evaluated. ResultsA total of 59 patients (23 girls and 36 boys) underwent PEPSiT during the study period. Ten/59 patients (16.9%) had recurrent PSD after open repair, and 4/59 (6.7%) presented a concomitant pilonidal cyst. All children underwent laser epilation pre- and postoperatively over the last 15 months. The average length of surgery was 27.5 min (range 20–45). The average pain score during the first 48 postoperative hours was 2.7 (range 2–5), and the average analgesic requirement was 20 h (range 16–24). The average hospitalization was 22.4 h (range 18–36). At 1 month postoperatively, external openings were healed in all patients. During follow-up, 1 recurrence (1.6%) was recorded and successfully re-treated with PEPSiT. ConclusionsWe believe that PEPSiT represents the technique of choice for treatment of PSD in the pediatric population. It is crucial to standardize the technique consisting of pre- and postoperative laser epilation, PEPSiT, and accurate postoperative wound management with eosin and sulfadiazine spray. Abstract The generation of waste and how to manage it pose challenges to municipal and district authorities in many parts of the world. In the African context, poverty, bad management practices, and increasing consumerist culture have conspired to render the situation even more complex. Complicating the situation further is the addition of synthetic and electronic waste, non-biodegradable and, in several cases, hazardous. Drawing on personal first hand experiences in Ghana from the perspective of a pastor and a scholar of religious studies, the author reflects on contemporary waste and its (mis)management in Africa and how these affect the dignity and security of present and future generations. He draws on relevant theological motifs from Christianity and indigenous African religious beliefs and practices as well as insights from sociology and eco-theological ethics to analyse the challenge and explore ways in which African Christian public opinion may be mobilized to help address the challenge.

A toolkit for women: the mis(sed) management of gender in resource industries

Purpose– The purpose of this paper is to show the extent to which work on how to manage gender in resource industries fails to draw on the body of knowledge which explores gender in the workplace.Design/methodology/approach– This paper explores the efficacy of a recently published toolkit within the context of the current debate about gender in resource industries (such as mining, and oil and gas).Findings– The Australian Human Rights Commission’s toolkit speaks to this debate, but fails to analyse existing strategies to deal with the “gender problem”; it simply repeats them as successful examples of what to do. The authors of the toolkit also fail to ask a question which is fundamental to the success of any intervention into gender: what is the definition of “gender” on which the work is based?Originality/value– The debate about gender in resource industries fails to take into consideration contemporary ideas about gender as they have appeared in academic research and human practice.

Gold Import: A Capital Account Acquisition? (Counter-View)

Gold import has been an issue of national debate in India. Economists opine that gold import is responsible for the bloating current account deficit (CAD). To check the widening current account deficit, United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government raised import duty on gold to 10 per cent from 2 per cent in stages. It also instructed all importers of gold to export 20 per cent of gold from every consignment of import. Gold import restrictions led to the CAD fell to 1.7 per cent of GDP of India. The next Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Government under Narendra Modi lifted the restriction on gold import. The jump in gold import widened the CAD. By December 2014, the CAD became 99 per cent of the annual estimate. But, the easing of gold import was supported by a few economists including Swaminathan S Ankalesaria Aiyer. Swaminathan termed gold import a ‘capital account acquisition’. He thought that gold import would work for inclusive growth for the ‘aam aadmi’ or the common man of India and proposed a change in the composition of capital account so as to accommodate gold in it. This article surveyed literature and compiled data on how gold import contributed to the CAD and fiscal (mis)management of India. It also tried to identify research gaps so that future fiscal management of the country could be studied comprehensibly in the presence of gold import. As India is bound by multilateral obligations, the paper tried to recommend necessary steps so that the country would not be put on defensive.

Renewing Literature Reviews in MIS Research? A Critical Realist Approach

Literature Reviews (LR) are particularly useful for demonstrating the coherence and cumulativeness (or lack thereof) of MIS research and for developing avenues for further research. Most top-tier journals now publish LRs, and many have even begun devoting specific sections to them. Our starting point is that LRs are not epistemologically neutral, and three approaches commonly underlie literature reviews: positivism (identifying the concepts, theories and models closest to the phenomenon that is being explained); interpretivism (identifying the various concepts and theories expressed by various actors and grouping them into multiple perspectives); and critical approaches (identifying both the underlying assumptions and conditions of the production of theories and their effects). We suggest a fourth approach to LRs underpinned by the philosophy of critical realism (CR) and argue that it can enable the (re)interpretation of existing literature through the identification of underlying generative mechanisms. These generative mechanisms provide a common denominator to enable the synthesis of concepts and theories in new ways, helping to bridge previously thought to be incompatible theories, and contributing to a more cumulative view of academic knowledge. We illustrate the value of a CR-based literature through its application to the topic of IT Strategic Value in the MIS and strategic management literature; we show how the identification of four generative mechanisms and three core agencies can support a more integrated view of IT Strategic Value. We then discuss the implications of the use of generative mechanisms and propose guidelines from a CR perspective for carrying out literature reviews.

Knowledge of Mothers in Management of Diarrhea in Under-Five Children, in Kashan, Iran

Background: Diarrhea has been considered as a major cause of mortality in children aged less than five years old. Most of these deaths are due to dehydration and mis management or delayed management of the disease. Most of the diarrhea episodes are treated in the home by mothers. Therefore the mothers’ knowledge in management of diarrhea is likely related to its mortality and morbidity. Objectives: This study designed to evaluate the knowledge of the mothers with children under five years old about diarrhea and its management and to identify the relation of the knowledge content with some demographic characteristics. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 430 mothers who had at least one child aged below five years old were selected by cluster sampling. The mothers were asked to complete the 22 items questionnaire designed to evaluate their knowledge of diarrhea. Some demographic characteristics such as age, number of children, education of the mother and her spouse and the source of knowledge also were recorded. Subsequently, the data analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square test. Results: Most of the mothers were 25-30 years old (43.8%). Slightly more than half (55.6%) had just one child. The health center, educational programs and the personal reading were the main sources of the knowledge about the treatment (43.7%). Twenty eight point eight percent of the mothers had a good knowledge in diarrhea diagnosis and its treatment, while the 46.5% had medium and 24.7% suffered low knowledge. The knowledge of the mothers had significant relationship with the age of the mother, education of the father, number of children, occupation of the mother, and the source of the knowledge. Conclusions: The mothers studied in this research had inadequate knowledge about diagnosis and treatment of diarrhea. The educational programs must be an essential part of the health centers programs.

PurposeThe owners and promoters of Color Valley are feeling blue as their much cherished entrepreneurial endeavour is attacked by multi‐hued issues. Having chalked out a distinct position for itself in the landscape of the unorganized paint industry through aggressive brand building and marketing, the five year old company, known for its quality product and customer satisfaction, is today at a crossroads of liquidity dilemma. The severe cash crunch needs to be not only contained but reversed through well thought out actions. This is not an exception in such set‐ups: it's rather more of a norm. However, decisions of today are going to determine the fate of tomorrow. The purpose of this paper is to present a case of financial (mis)management set in the backdrop of entrepreneurial venture, which will be useful to practising managers, entrepreneurs and students alike.Design/methodology/approachThe researchers use a single case study approach by examining stages in entrepreneur development process, effect of environment, barriers to entrepreneurship and strategic decision making. In addition, secondary data on the Indian paint industry were gathered and analyzed to determine external environment for the business, and the root cause of the problems faced by young entrepreneurs identified.FindingsThe case finding encapsulates issues of general management, financial management and marketing and throws a light on entrepreneurial thinking and development.Originality/valueThis case study provides a deep understanding of the tough times faced by young entrepreneurs, resulting from the exposure of the multiple issues which offer the opportunities and problems to small‐scale entrepreneurs.

New Trends in Higher Education and Challenges and Emerging Opportunities in Business Education

This research investigates the new trends in Higher education and challenging and emerging opportunities in Business education. A complementary survey was conducted from 50 organizations in Sindh province by using simple random technique, and 200 sample size were selected from student data set. The results showed that higher education trends are dramatically changed in few decades. It was revealed that Business education is the first priority of the 90% of the students in Pakistan. It was further revealed that business education also emerging with new disciplines according to the market demand i.e. Knowledge management, MIS and Stress management these are the key areas where students and organizations are interested. There are numerous job opportunities in the business related degrees. It was further revealed that new trends in business education open the window of multinational organizations for creating job opportunities for the graduates of business.

Assessing Common Method Bias: Problems with the ULMC Technique

Recent work, in journals such as MIS Quarterly and Management Science, has highlighted the importance of evaluating the influence of common method bias (CMB) on the results of statistical analysis. In this research note, we assess the utility of the unmeasured latent method construct (ULMC) approach in partial least squares (PLS), introduced by Liang et al. (2007). Such an assessment of the ULMC approach is important, because it has been employed in 76 studies since it appeared in MIS Quarterly in early 2007. Using data generated via Monte Carlo simulations, we use PLS structural equation modeling (SEM) to demonstrate that the ULMC approach of Liang et al. is neither able to detect, nor control for, common method bias. Method estimates using this approach resulted in negligible estimates, regardless of whether there were some, large, or no method bias introduced in the simulated data. Our study contributes to the IS and research methods literature by illustrating that, and explaining why the ULMC approach does not accurately detect common method bias in PLS. Further, our results build on prior work done using covariance-based SEM questioning the usefulness of the ULMC technique for detecting CMB.

Risk and Financial Armageddon in Ireland: The Politics of the Galway Tent

This article examines Ireland's financial crisis. Thus far explanation has focused on individual or collective administrative failure: the office(r) of financial regulation singularly failed to scrutinise the banks sufficiently: it was a matter of poor risk management. While this article would agree that the (mis)management of risk was important to how the crisis unfolded, I argue that an explanation of why the crisis emerged demands an altogether different focus. Put simply, after financial regulatory reform, a reconfiguration of risk in politics took place as the locus of decision‐making about financial risk shifted from the realm of the political/legal (Cabinet/Central Bank/Department of Finance) to the economic/legal (retail banks, shareholders/consumers). It was a critical development, one that mirrored events taking place in the UK, upon which Ireland drew experience, for now assessments about risk undertaken by the banks demanded that intervention could be justified only on an ascertainable risk, not a theoretical uncertainty (or spurious fear). The evidentiary bar for intervention was therefore raised, removing the precautionary instinct implicit in the prudential governance of Central Banks.
