The purpose of this study is to present issues and improvements related to the format, ways of describing achievement standards, and terminology in social studies curriculum documents, focusing on the social science domain. The issues and improvements of social studies curriculum documents covered in this study are largely divided into those on: 1) subject system and nature & goals, 2) the composition of subject content structure, 3) achievement standards and the things to note in teaching & learning methods and evaluation. First, in relation to the subject system and nature & goals, it is suggested to divide middle school social studies into middle school geography and social science, and to establish social science competency as well as overall social studies competency. Elementary, middle, and high school social studies goals should be presented as integrated goals, goals for each area, and goals for each subject respectively, based on the overall goals of social studies. Second, when it comes to the subject content structure, more clarified terms and a separate function structure are required. In addition to separating general subject and specific subject content structure, an alternative content structure is proposed that combines themes & learning elements, achievement standards, subject competencies & functions. Third, in the achievement standards and the things to note in teaching & learning methods and evaluation, new ways of describing achievement standards should be considered to specify the related competencies and to use appropriate verbs for the objects to articulate social studies competencies and functions. In addition, it is suggested that the things to note in teaching & learning methods and evaluation should be deleted from the curriculum document because they could decrease the diversity of textbooks . In conclusion, examining issues related to the subject system, nature & goals, competency, content structure, functions, achievement standards, the explanation of achievement standards, the precauions of teaching & learning methods and evaluation in this study can contribute to the improvements of the 2022 revised social studies curriculum.
