Dr. Denis O. Krause passed away on October 16, 2011, at his home surrounded by his family. Denis was Professor of Gut Microbiology in the Department of Animal Science with a cross-appointment in the Department of Medical Microbiology at the University of Manitoba. Denis was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, on January 24, 1965. In 1988, he received his B.Sc. at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. Denis obtained his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees from theUniversity of Illinois in 1990 and 1994, respectively. Subsequently, he was a Postdoctoral Scientist in Microbiology at Cornell University. In 1996 he moved to Australia, where he was employed as a Research Scientist at CSIRO Livestock Industries until 2000, when he was promoted to Senior Research Scientist. In 2003 he obtained the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Animal Science at the University of Manitoba. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2006 and to Full Professor in 2010. Denis had a very active, well-funded and internationally recognized research program. His expertise in gut microbiology greatly improved the understanding of the movement of pathogens in the farm ecosystem, identified solutions to stressors in the animal’s intestinal tract, mitigated food safety issues, and contributed to several medical science networks focused on the etiology and prevention of inflammatory bowel disease in humans. He emphasized the need for stronger linkages between animal agriculture and medicine as a means of advancing food safety. He established successful research networks in swine gut microbiology and rumen microbiology that stretch across Canada and internationally. During the last six years alone, he supervised five post-doctoral fellows, eight Ph.D., eight M.Sc., and numerous undergraduate students as well as technical staff. He served on committees for 16 Ph.D. and M.Sc. students. Many of these individuals have been recognized through NSERC postgraduate and industry awards, and have gone on to discipline-related positions as academics, scientists and experts within government. He authored or co-authored over 85 peer-reviewed publications, as well as numerous book chapters and abstracts. He edited the book on ‘‘Zoonotic pathogens in the food chain’’ that was published in 2010. In 2011, he received the prestigious award for ‘‘Technical Innovation in Enhancing Production of Safe Affordable Food’’ from the Canadian Society of Animal Science. He was an active member of the Canadian Society of Animal Science, the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada, and the American Society for Microbiology. Denis served on the scientific advisory boards of the Canadian Johne’s Disease Network and the International Committee for the Nutrition of Herbivores, and on the Committee for Genomes, Environment, and Microbes of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada. In addition, he was Section Editor for Microbiology for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases. Next to his work, Denis, had many interests, including sports, travel, history, and reading. No day was too cold for him to go running. He most enjoyed spending time with his three sons. Denis was diagnosed with a serious disease early in 2011. He fought this disease bravely, while continuing his research and teaching. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and students, and leaves a great void. Denis is survived by his wife Alice, and his sons David, Jonathan and Joshua. In memory of Denis, donations may be made to the Krause Family Education Fund at any branch of the Steinbach Credit Union, in Manitoba. Dr. Denis O. Krause
