Maxillary metastasis of transitional cell carcinoma: Report of a case

Metastases to the maxilla are extremely rare, and only 64 cases of histologically proven maxillary metastases can be found in the English-language literature. This article reports the first case of metastatic transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder to the maxilla. The distribution of proven cases of maxillary metastasis and the possible anatomic pathways for this metastasis are discussed.

Combination chemotherapy with cisplatin and VM-26 in advanced transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder

Forty-one evaluable patients with bidimensionally measurable metastases of transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder were treated with cisplatin 70 mg/m 2 i.v. on day 1 and VM-26 100 mg/m 2 i.v. on days 1 and 2, every 3 weeks. Response was evaluated after 2 treatment cycles. Complete response (CR) was achieved in 4 patients (10%) and partial response (PR) in 17 (41%). The median response duration was 6 months. In this group of previously untreated patients the combination of cisplatin and VM-26 did not appear to yield better response rates than would be expected from cisplain alone.

Optimum Fractionation for Irradiation of Carcinoma of the Bladder: Experiments based on one case

A patient with multiple metastases of transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder to the skin and subcutaneous tissues proved a model where most of the biologic and host-related factors were constant. The effects of varying the physical factors of radiation dose and time were observed. The results indicate that fractionated irradiation at intervals of 48 h was more effective than at intervals of 24 h and that superfractionation (intervals of 5 h) was not an effective method for the treatment of this tumor. The possible reasons for this effect and the implication for the treatment of bladder carcinoma are discussed.
