Research Front and Future Prospect: A Bibliometric Study of Metaphor Comprehension

Metaphor comprehension is an important component in the process of constructing metaphorical thinking. Therefore, the topic of “metaphor comprehension” should be a crucial part of metaphor studies. This study uses Bibliometrix to conduct a bibliometric study of research on metaphor comprehension from 2013 to 2023, focusing on the knowledge structure, the hot spots, and the research fronts. The co-citation analysis shows that the Contemporary Theory of Metaphor (CTM) in Cognitive Linguistics has provided the dominant knowledge foundation for the research of metaphor comprehension. A large number of hypotheses from CTM not only provide theoretical guidance for the current understanding of metaphor but also provide a reference for experimental paradigms. The coupling analysis shows that most of the influential studies in the time span have conducted empirical studies, demonstrating the explanatory power of empirical results and the interdisciplinary trend of metaphor in psychology and neuroscience. In the past decade, theoretical approaches to metaphor comprehension have been divided into linguistic and interdisciplinary categories, in which different experimental paradigms and conditions were used to reveal the comprehension mechanism. However, while providing insights for metaphor comprehension study through the existing research results, the bibliometric analysis reflects that researchers should fully consider the gap between metaphor in use and metaphor in experiments. This may be mediated through the progress of metaphor comprehension models in different contexts. This study suggests that future research on metaphor comprehension should enrich their theoretical models, properly use or combine research methods and designs, and look into different types of research objects.

Metaphor and the scientific method: Why Lacan’s perspective isn’t helpful yet

Keefer (2022) argues that theoretical commitments to conceptual metaphor theory (CMT) impede research on metaphor in psychology. To jumpstart the field, he suggests adopting Lacan’s perspective. I disagree with this argument for a few reasons. First, CMT has a much more nuanced place in current research on metaphor than it would seem from the target article. Second, the field does engage with the hypotheses enumerated by Keefer: that metaphors emerge from a complex web of associations, have unconscious influence, and reflect deep-seated motivations. I review how contemporary research has approached these questions and show how the constraints cited in Keefer’s article stem from the field’s commitments to the scientific method and the computational theory of mind, rather than CMT. Finally, contrary to how they are framed in Keefer’s article, I argue that these constraints have enabled scientific progress to date and limit the impact of Lacan’s perspective moving forward.

Whose metaphor? Rethinking conceptual metaphor in Lacanian terms

Recent research on the psychology of metaphor is based primarily on the cognitivist framework provided by conceptual metaphor theory (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980). This approach has been generative and does much to explain the pervasive role that metaphoric language plays in everyday life. However, interest in metaphor is not limited to this cognitive approach; Lacan accorded metaphor a central role in his psychoanalytic understanding of the process of signification that structures language and, thereby, the unconscious. Although the two frameworks have different assumptions and aims, they are largely compatible ways of thinking about the role of metaphor in psychology. The goal of this article is to briefly introduce both approaches and ultimately to suggest several key insights about metaphor that could be gained through a greater attention to Lacanian psychoanalysis.

The Tao of consumption: private self in a collective culture

PurposeCollectivism in service research is so bound with Asian cultures as to risk being overly deterministic. Contesting this stereotype, this paper surfaces the individualistic consumption facets of consumers within a collectivist cultural setting, describing the compensating role servicescapes may play and the service marketing opportunities they present.Design/methodology/approachWithin a Chinese cultural research frame, a qualitative grounded approach is adopted that surfaces subconscious metaphors of private consumption through photo elicitation, deep psychological metaphor elicitation and triangulated with field observation.FindingsIndividuals within a collectivist culture do actively seek private psychic space to regenerate the self and prepare for social obligations heavily influenced by Confucian norms. Servicescapes play an important role in private consumption as they provide both a physical and mental oasis of privacy not easily obtainable in regular life and work.Practical implicationsService providers could offer East Asian consumers a package that includes the individual aspect of their value system, whenever and however they see suitable. More specifically, servicescapes can be designed to provide services that facilitate consumer restoration by implementing the mental metaphors consumers of have this process.Social implicationsA stereotype of a consumption has grown around Chinese consumers that while not totally false, misses a vital aspect of human values and risks missing profitable market niches. Consideration of the whole person's collective-individualistic cycle benefits both the consumer and the business.Originality/valueMoving beyond a one-dimensional description of East Asian consumer behavior, focused on collective values, we show the key role servicescapes play in private consumption. A psychological renewal of the self, in preparation to re-enter the collective, show the multiple aspects of Asian consumers.

From Metaphor in Humanitarian Paradigm to Computer Metaphor in Cognitive Science

The article presents an analysis of metaphor in the humanities and computer metaphor in cognitive psychology and cognitive science in general. Issues related to the emergence and role of computer metaphor in the development of cognitive psychology are discussed. The emphasis is placed on the symbolic approach, which was of paramount importance at the initial stage of the development of cognitive psychology. Particular attention is paid to the computer metaphor in solving urgent problems of modeling the brain and cognitive abilities in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). It is concluded that the appeal to metaphors located at the intersection of the humanities and cognitive sciences and denoting various issues of AI modeling are due to the historical contexts of the development of modern science focused on the integration of knowledge of various orientations.

REAL POWER LOSS REDUCTION & VOLTAGE STABILITY AMPLIFICATION BY HYBRIDIZATION OF RESTARTED SIMULATED ANNEALING WITH PARTICLE SWARM OPTIMIZATION ALGORITHM

This paper presents an algorithm for solving the multi-objective reactive power dispatch problem in a power system. Modal analysis of the system is used for static voltage stability assessment. Loss minimization and maximization of voltage stability margin are taken as the objectives. Generator terminal voltages, reactive power generation of the capacitor banks and tap changing transformer setting are taken as the optimization variables. Evolutionary algorithm and Swarm Intelligence algorithm (EA, SI), a part of Bio inspired optimization algorithm, have been widely used to solve numerous optimization problem in various science and engineering domains. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a population-based swarm intelligence algorithm that shares many similarities with evolutionary computation techniques. However, the PSO is driven by the simulation of a social psychological metaphor motivated by collective behaviors of bird and other social organisms instead of the survival of the fittest individual. The Simulated Annealing (SA) algorithm is a probabilistic hill-climbing technique that is based on the annealing/cooling process of metals. In total, most moves may be accepted at initial stages, but at the final stage only improving ones are likely to be allowed. This can help the procedure jump out of a local minimum. However, sometimes it is better to move back to a former solution that was significantly better rather than always moving from the current state. This process is called “restarting” of SA & called as Restarted Simulated Annealing (RSA). In this paper we proposed a hybridized restarted simulated annealing particle swarm optimization (RSAPSO) technique to find global minima more efficiently and robustly. The proposed RSAPSO combines the global search ability of PSO and the local search ability of RSA, and offsets the weaknesses of each other. In order to evaluate the proposed algorithm, it has been tested on IEEE 30 bus system and compared to other reported algorithms.

Music, in its intrinsically embodied nature, bridges defensive disconnections between mind and body that limit contact with self and other.

The Architecture of Love and the (Meta)Theater of Memory in Calderón's El escondido y la tapada

This essay examines the relationship between the early modern discourses of love and memory in Calderon’s 1636 comedy El escondido y la tapada.The work’s action takes place almost entirely within one setting: the Madrid house from which the protagonist Cesar finds himself unable to escape. Calderon exploits this setting to bring together his era’s architectural theories of memory and its mnemonic theories of love. The ars memorativa recommended that its adepts visualize their memories as invented or real buildings within the rooms of which they placed evocative images, including those of attractive women, while lovesickness was considered a disorder of the memory, from which the arresting image of a beloved could not be dislodged. In El escondido y la tapada, the onstage house serves as a psychological metaphor given polyvalent scenic form, representing not only Cesar’s dysfunctional psyche, jointly occupied by the two women with whom he is simultaneously (though not equally) in love, but both their minds as well. Moreover, this device self-reflexively links El escondido to the era’s much-theorized memory theaters, such as those of Giulio Camilo and Robert Fludd, and invites a metatheatrical reading of the play as an exemplarycomedia de capa y espada.

Psychological subjectivity as an optical metaphor in discursive psychology

The paper explores the metatheoretical level of assessing the limits of application of clinical and psychotherapeutic methods, using three central philosophical approaches to humans and subjectivity – philosophical anthropology, phenomenology, and existentialism. The current project conceptualizes the modern type of person, explicitly oriented towards the values of consumption, power and prestige. The latter grounds recurrent references to social and cultural phenomena, even when methodological bases of clinicist analysis are considered. A special stress is made on the importance of speech acts in the process of psychotherapeutic interactions, which is subject to the discourse analysis. The main hypothesis concerns a correspondence of the levels of intrusion and of the studies of human psychics, to the models of medicine and to the general level of the society development and its culture.

Economic Dispatch Optimization Using Imperialist Competitive Algorithm (ICA) and compare with PSO algorithm result

Despite the seminal status of Herbert Fingarette's collection of essays, Confucius: The Secular as Sacred , certain lines of criticism have persisted for four decades. The aim of this essay is to rescue Fingarette's analyses from several recurring misconceptions. Attending to Fingarette's methods of analysis and to the light shed by subsequent publications, the following claims are advanced regarding Fingarette's understanding of the Lun yü . (1) Fingarette does not give it a "behaviorist" interpretation. (2) While it does not utilize psychological metaphors or doctrines, it nevertheless affirms that persons have a psychic life and exercise moral agency. (3) Indeed, a "moral self" underlies an authentic (egoless) "bearer of roles." (4) It reveals how "magical power" is at the heart of human virtue embedded in li , but this does not mean either that persons exercise causal power from a distance or that such magical power lacks philosophical significance. (5) Li is epistemologically necessary for what can be interpersonally understood as intelligently appropriate conduct, as references to "performatives" and "forms of life" make clear. (6) Human beings are primarily performers rather than composers of li ; nevertheless, right conduct manifests how individuals uniquely cultivate themselves and attain sacred dignity.

Marina Carr's By the Bog of Cats … examines the psychological, cultural, and environmental importance of bogs to Irish collective consciousness. My essay offers a detailed look into the history of Irish boglands from an ecocritical point of view, and argues that these landscapes are not peripheral, but actually central to Irish studies and the environments in which Irish literature unfolds. Bogs have existed on the margins of society and have been home to many dispossessed peoples, discourses, spirits, and histories. Ultimately, I argue that By the Bog of Cats … addresses these unresolved dimensions of the bog geography and provides surprisingly fertile ground to explore literary and environmental relationships, conjuring ancient mythic associations, long histories of abuse and neglect, and modern psychological metaphors.

A self-adaptive embedded chaotic particle swarm optimization for parameters selection of Wv-SVM

Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a population-based swarm intelligence algorithm driven by the simulation of a social psychological metaphor instead of the survival of the fittest individual. Based on the chaotic system theory, this paper proposes new PSO method that uses chaotic mappings for parameter adaptation of Wavelet v-support vector machine (Wv-SVM). Since chaotic mapping enjoys certainty, ergodicity and the stochastic property, the proposed PSO introduces chaos mapping using logistic mapping sequences which increases its convergence rate and resulting precision. The simulation results show the parameter selection of Wv-SVM model can be solved with high search efficiency and solution accuracy under the proposed PSO method.

The role of metaphor in psychology is reviewed, focused on gender and sexual orientation stereotypes. Feminist therapy principles are explored in relation to addressing the presence of stereotypes within a therapeutic context. Implications for working with clients presenting with disordered eating, agoraphobia, sexual violence, and sexual identity concerns are discussed.

Gaussian quantum-behaved particle swarm optimization approaches for constrained engineering design problems

Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a population-based swarm intelligence algorithm that shares many similarities with evolutionary computation techniques. However, the PSO is driven by the simulation of a social psychological metaphor motivated by collective behaviors of bird and other social organisms instead of the survival of the fittest individual. Inspired by the classical PSO method and quantum mechanics theories, this work presents novel quantum-behaved PSO (QPSO) approaches using mutation operator with Gaussian probability distribution. The application of Gaussian mutation operator instead of random sequences in QPSO is a powerful strategy to improve the QPSO performance in preventing premature convergence to local optima. In this paper, new combinations of QPSO and Gaussian probability distribution are employed in well-studied continuous optimization problems of engineering design. Two case studies are described and evaluated in this work. Our results indicate that Gaussian QPSO approaches handle such problems efficiently in terms of precision and convergence and, in most cases, they outperform the results presented in the literature.

Solving economic load dispatch problems in power systems using chaotic and Gaussian particle swarm optimization approaches

The objective of the Economic Dispatch Problems (EDPs) of electric power generation is to schedule the committed generating units outputs so as to meet the required load demand at minimum operating cost while satisfying all units and system equality and inequality constraints. Recently, global optimization approaches inspired by swarm intelligence and evolutionary computation approaches have proven to be a potential alternative for the optimization of difficult EDPs. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a population-based stochastic algorithm driven by the simulation of a social psychological metaphor instead of the survival of the fittest individual. Inspired by the swarm intelligence and probabilities theories, this work presents the use of combining of PSO, Gaussian probability distribution functions and/or chaotic sequences. In this context, this paper proposes improved PSO approaches for solving EDPs that takes into account nonlinear generator features such as ramp-rate limits and prohibited operating zones in the power system operation. The PSO and its variants are validated for two test systems consisting of 15 and 20 thermal generation units. The proposed combined method outperforms other modern metaheuristic optimization techniques reported in the recent literature in solving for the two constrained EDPs case studies.

Novel Gaussian quantum-behaved particle swarm optimiser applied to electromagnetic design

Design of global optimisation approaches inspired by swarm intelligence is an emergent research area with population and evolution characteristics similar to those of evolutionary algorithms. However, the swarm intelligence concept differs in that it emphasises co-operative behaviour among group members. Particle swarm optimisation (PSO) is a population-based swarm intelligence algorithm driven by the simulation of a social psychological metaphor instead of survival of the fittest individual. Inspired by the classical PSO method and quantum mechanics theories, this work presents a novel quantum-behaved PSO (QPSO) approach using mutation operator with Gaussian probability distribution, called G-QPSO. The simulation results demonstrate good performance of the QPSO and G-QPSO in solving a significant benchmark problem in electromagnetic area, the shape design of Loney&apos;s solenoid benchmark problem.

A novel chaotic particle swarm optimization approach using Hénon map and implicit filtering local search for economic load dispatch

Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a population-based swarm intelligence algorithm driven by the simulation of a social psychological metaphor instead of the survival of the fittest individual. Based on the chaotic systems theory, this paper proposed a novel chaotic PSO combined with an implicit filtering (IF) local search method to solve economic dispatch problems. Since chaotic mapping enjoys certainty, ergodicity and the stochastic property, the proposed PSO introduces chaos mapping using Hénon map sequences which increases its convergence rate and resulting precision. The chaotic PSO approach is used to produce good potential solutions, and the IF is used to fine-tune of final solution of PSO. The hybrid methodology is validated for a test system consisting of 13 thermal units whose incremental fuel cost function takes into account the valve-point loading effects. Simulation results are promising and show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
