Plasticity of Metal-Organic Framework Glasses.

Metal-organic framework (MOF) glasses provide new perspectives on many material properties due to their unique chemical and structural nature. Their mechanical properties are of particular interest because glasses are inherently brittle, which limits their applications as structural materials. Here we perform strain-rate-dependent uniaxial micropillar compression experiments on agZIF-62, agZIF-UC-5, and agTIF-4, a series of MOF glasses with different substituting linker molecules, and find that these glasses show substantial plasticity, at least on the micrometer scale. At a quasi-static strain rate of 0.001 s-1, the micropillars yielded at approximately 0.32 GPa and subsequently deformed plastically up to 35% strain, irrespective of the type of substituting linker. With increasing strain rate, the yield strength of agZIF-62 evolved with the strain-rate sensitivity m = 0.024 to reach a yield strength of 0.44 GPa at a strain rate of 510 s-1. On the basis of this relatively low strain-rate sensitivity and the absence of serrated flow, we conclude that structural densification is the predominant mechanism that accommodates such extensive plasticity.

Mechanochemically Synthesised Flexible Electrodes Based on Bimetallic Metal-Organic Framework Glasses for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction.

The melting behaviour of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has aroused significant research interest in the areas of materials science, condensed matter physics and chemical engineering. This work first introduces a novel method to fabricate a bimetallic MOF glass, through melt-quenching of the cobalt-based zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) [ZIF-62(Co)] with an adsorbed ferric coordination complex. The high-temperature chemically reactive ZIF-62(Co) liquid facilitates the formation of coordinative bonds between Fe and imidazolate ligands, incorporating Fe nodes into the framework after quenching. The resultant Co-Fe bimetallic MOF glass therefore shows a significantly enhanced oxygen evolution reaction performance. The novel bimetallic MOF glass, when combined with the facile and scalable mechanochemical synthesis technique for both discrete powders and surface coatings on flexible substrates, enables significant opportunities for catalytic device assembly.

Glassy Metal–Organic‐Framework‐Based Quasi‐Solid‐State Electrolyte for High‐Performance Lithium‐Metal Batteries

AbstractEnhancing ionic conductivity of quasi‐solid‐state electrolytes (QSSEs) is one of the top priorities, while conventional metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) severely impede ion migration due to their abundant grain boundaries. Herein, ZIF‐4 glass, a subset of MOFs, is reported as QSSEs (LGZ) for lithium‐metal batteries. With lean Li content (0.12 wt%) and solvent amount (19.4 wt%), LGZ can achieve a remarkable ion conductivity of 1.61 × 10−4 S cm−1 at 30 °C, higher than those of crystalline ZIF‐4‐based QSSEs (LCZ, 8.21 × 10−5 S cm−1) and the reported QSSEs containing high Li contents (0.32–5.4 wt%) and huge plasticizer (30–70 wt%). Even at −56.6 °C, LGZ can still deliver a conductivity of 5.96 × 10−6 S cm−1 (vs 4.51 × 10−7 S cm−1 for LCZ). Owing to the grain boundary‐free and isotropic properties of glassy ZIF‐4, the facilitated ion conduction enables a homogeneous ion flux, suppressing Li dendrites. When paired with LiFePO4 cathode, LGZ cell demonstrates a prominent cycling capacity of 101 mAh g−1 for 500 cycles at 1 C with the near‐utility retention, outperforming LCZ (30.7 mAh g−1) and the explored MOF‐/covalent–organic frameworks (COF)‐based QSSEs. Hence, MOF glasses will be a potential platform for practical quasi‐solid‐state batteries in the future.

Melting of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites.

Several organic-inorganic hybrid materials from the metal-organic framework (MOF) family have been shown to form stable liquids at high temperatures. Quenching then results in the formation of melt-quenched MOF glasses that retain the three-dimensional coordination bonding of the crystalline phase. These hybrid glasses have intriguing properties and could find practical applications, yet the melt-quench phenomenon has so far remained limited to a few MOF structures. Here we turn to hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites-which occupy a prominent position within materials chemistry owing to their functional properties such as ion transport, photoconductivity, ferroelectricity and multiferroicity-and show that a series of dicyanamide-based hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites undergo melting. Our combined experimental-computational approach demonstrates that, on quenching, they form glasses that largely retain their solid-state inorganic-organic connectivity. The resulting materials show very low thermal conductivities (~0.2 W m-1 K-1), moderate electrical conductivities (10-3-10-5 S m-1) and polymer-like thermomechanical properties.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) beyond crystallinity: amorphous MOFs, MOF liquids and MOF glasses

The field of MOFs has been incorrectly believed to be purely crystalline. Herein, non-crystalline MOFs (amorphous MOFs, MOF liquids, and MOF glasses) are reviewed. Future research directions are also discussed.

Deformation mechanism of a metal-organic framework glass under indentation.

Revealing the deformation mechanism of brittle materials under sharp contact loading (indentation) is important for their applications since this knowledge is crucial for identifying the origin of flaw and scratch formation on their surfaces. As a newly emerged glass family, metal-organic framework (MOF) glasses have not been studied concerning the mechanism of their indentation-induced deformation. Here, we explore this mechanism for ZIF-62 glass (a typical MOF glass system). The fractions of densification and shear flow during indentation were determined by atomic force microscopy, while the elastic deformation was measured via nanoindentation. The results show that ZIF-62 glass deforms primarily through densification and elastic deformation under the sharp contact loading. Significant pile-ups around indents were not observed, indicating that no or limited shear flow occurs in the glass during indentation. This behavior could be attributed to three structural factors, namely, high free volume, easily densified glass structure, and limited translational mobility of structural units.

Structural integrity, meltability, and variability of thermal properties in the mixed-linker zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-62.

Metal-organic framework (MOF) glasses have emerged as a new class of melt-quenched glasses; however, so far, all MOF glass production has remained at lab-scale; future applications will require large-scale, commercial production of parent crystalline MOFs. Yet, control of synthetic parameters, such as uniform temperature and mixing, can be challenging, particularly, when scaling-up production of a mixed-linker MOF or a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF). Here, we examine the effect of heterogeneous linker distribution on the thermal properties and melting behavior of ZIF-62. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman, and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies revealed little discernable structural difference between samples of ZIF-62 synthesized in our lab and by a commercial supplier. Differential scanning calorimetry and variable temperature/isothermal XRD revealed the samples to have significantly different thermal behavior. Formation of ZIF-zni was identified, which contributed to a dramatic rise in the melting point by around 100 K and also led to the alteration of the macroscopic properties of the final glass. Parameters that might lead to the formation of unexpected phases such as an uneven distribution of linkers were identified, and characterization methods for the detection of unwanted phases are provided. Finally, the need for adequate consideration of linker distribution is stressed when characterizing mixed-linker ZIFs.

Metal-organic framework and inorganic glass composites

Metal-organic framework (MOF) glasses have become a subject of interest as a distinct category of melt quenched glass, and have potential applications in areas such as ion transport and sensing. In this paper we show how MOF glasses can be combined with inorganic glasses in order to fabricate a new family of materials composed of both MOF and inorganic glass domains. We use an array of experimental techniques to propose the bonding between inorganic and MOF domains, and show that the composites produced are more mechanically pliant than the inorganic glass itself.

Extraction of 3D quantitative maps using EDS-STEM tomography and HAADF-EDS bimodal tomography

Electron tomography has been widely applied to three-dimensional (3D) morphology characterization and chemical analysis at the nanoscale. A HAADF-EDS bimodal tomographic (HEBT) reconstruction technique has been developed to extract high resolution element-specific information. However, the reconstructed elemental maps cannot be directly converted to quantitative compositional information. In this work, we propose a quantification approach for obtaining elemental weight fraction maps from the HEBT reconstruction technique using the physical parameters extracted from a Monte Carlo code, MC X-ray. A similar quantification approach is proposed for the EDS-STEM tomographic reconstruction. The performance of the two quantitative reconstruction methods, using the simultaneous iterative reconstruction technique, are evaluated and compared for a simulated dataset of a two-dimensional phantom sample. The effects of the reconstruction parameters including the number of iterations and the weight of the HAADF signal are discussed. Finally, the two approaches are applied to an experimental dataset to show the 3D structure and quantitative elemental maps of a particle of flux melted metal-organic framework glass.

Destruction of Metal-Organic Frameworks: Positive and Negative Aspects of Stability and Lability.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), constructed from organic linkers and inorganic building blocks, are well-known for their high crystallinity, high surface areas, and high component tunability. The stability of MOFs is a key prerequisite for their potential practical applications in areas including storage, separation, catalysis, and biomedicine since it is essential to guarantee the framework integrity during utilization. However, MOFs are prone to destruction under external stimuli, considerably hampering their commercialization. In this Review, we provide an overview of the situations where MOFs undergo destruction due to external stimuli such as chemical, thermal, photolytic, radiolytic, electronic, and mechanical factors and offer guidelines to avoid unwanted degradation happened to the framework. Furthermore, we discuss possible destruction mechanisms and their varying derived products. In particular, we highlight cases that utilize MOF instability to fabricate varying materials including hierarchically porous MOFs, monolayer MOF nanosheets, amorphous MOF liquids and glasses, polymers, metal nanoparticles, metal carbide nanoparticles, and carbon materials. Finally, we provide a perspective on the utilization of MOF destruction to develop advanced materials with a superior hierarchy for various applications.

Ionic glasses: Structure, properties and classification

Due to the absence of microstructure and virtually infinite compositional versatility, glassy materials are perfect candidates for rational methods to predict structure-property relationships. In the most common models of glass structure, a three-dimensional network backbone and less-localized interstitial species are taken as the fundamental constituents of a glass. Such theoretical frameworks break down for the wide range of glass-forming compositions in which covalent bonding does not percolate and, therefore, there is no network in the classical sense. Most prominently, this applies to the class of ionic glasses, presently emerging as a separate class of amorphous materials, which includes classical invert glasses, geometrically frustrated compounds, mixtures of simple salts and ionic liquids, and organic–inorganic hybrids. Here, we will critically review ionic glasses as a distinct group of materials in which structural predictions are complicated by the dominance of long-range bonding interactions which lack directionality. First, we will reassess Zachariasen’s and Hägg’s rules for conventional glass formation in an attempt to broaden the current understanding of glass formation to include ionic glasses. By reviewing the compositions and properties of many simple and complex glass-forming salts, we discern the commonalities shared by ionic glasses and their unique characteristics as compared to other classes of glass. Specifically, we discuss the importance of non-percolating topology to dynamic properties such as mechanical behavior, ionic conductivity, relaxation processes and crystallization. We also demonstrate the relevance of the adjacent fields of ionic liquids and amorphous metal organic frameworks, and highlight possibilities for fruitful interdisciplinary exchange. The structure of ionic glasses, being dominated by Coulombic interactions, lends itself to high compositional flexibility and therefore, creates significant opportunities in the search for optical materials with enhanced transmission windows, fast ion conductors, phase-change materials, or, e.g ., adapted solders, hermetic seals and dielectric insulators. • The field of ionic glasses is reviewed with a focus on structure and properties. • Classification criteria are proposed. • Invert, halide, oxoanionic, halide-oxide and superionic glasses are included. • Links are drawn to the adjacent fields of ionic liquids and metal organic framework glasses.

Fracture toughness of a metal\u2013organic framework glass

Metal-organic framework glasses feature unique thermal, structural, and chemical properties compared to traditional metallic, organic, and oxide glasses. So far, there is a lack of knowledge of their mechanical properties, especially toughness and strength, owing to the challenge in preparing large bulk glass samples for mechanical testing. However, a recently developed melting method enables fabrication of large bulk glass samples (>25 mm3) from zeolitic imidazolate frameworks. Here, fracture toughness (KIc) of a representative glass, namely ZIF-62 glass (Zn(C3H3N2)1.75(C7H5N2)0.25), is measured using single-edge precracked beam method and simulated using reactive molecular dynamics. KIc is determined to be ~0.1 MPa m0.5, which is even lower than that of brittle oxide glasses due to the preferential breakage of the weak coordinative bonds (Zn-N). The glass is found to exhibit an anomalous brittle-to-ductile transition behavior, considering its low fracture surface energy despite similar Poisson’s ratio to that of many ductile metallic and organic glasses.

Metal-Organic Framework Glasses Possess Higher Thermal Conductivity than Their Crystalline Counterparts.

The thermal conductivity (κ) of glasses is known to always be lower than that of their corresponding crystals due to the stronger phonon-phonon scattering in the former. However, it is unknown whether this relation holds for metal-organic frameworks. Here, we report our discovery of an inverse relation in κ between glass and crystal for two zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), ZIF-4 and ZIF-62, that is, melt-quenched ZIF-4 and ZIF-62 glasses possess higher thermal conductivities than their crystalline counterparts. We find that the ZIF crystal pellets exhibit ultralow κ (∼0.1 W m-1 K-1) and that the higher κ of the ZIF glasses is due to the collapse of internal cavities and higher atomic number density in the latter. For other systems like oxides, vitrification causes higher free volume, but the opposite is found for the ZIFs, that is, lower free volume owing to the partial collapse of the crystalline framework upon melting.

Ultrahigh-field 67Zn NMR reveals short-range disorder in zeolitic imidazolate framework glasses.

The structure of melt-quenched zeolitic imidazole framework (ZIF) glasses can provide insights into their glass-formation mechanism. We directly detected short-range disorder in ZIF glasses using ultrahigh-field zinc-67 solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Two distinct Zn sites characteristic of the parent crystals transformed upon melting into a single tetrahedral site with a broad distribution of structural parameters. Moreover, the ligand chemistry in ZIFs appeared to have no controlling effect on the short-range disorder, although the former affected their phase-transition behavior. These findings reveal structure-property relations and could help design metal-organic framework glasses.

A MOF Glass Membrane for Gas Separation.

Metal-organic framework (MOF) glasses are promising candidates for membrane fabrication due to their significant porosity, the ease of processing, and most notably, the potential to eliminate the grain boundary that is unavoidable for polycrystalline MOF membranes. Herein, we developed a ZIF-62 MOF glass membrane and exploited its intrinsic gas-separation properties. The MOF glass membrane was fabricated by melt-quenching treatment of an in situ solvothermally synthesized polycrystalline ZIF-62 MOF membrane on a porous ceramic alumina support. The molten ZIF-62 phase penetrated into the nanopores of the support and eliminated the formation of intercrystalline defects in the resultant glass membrane. The molecular sieving ability of the MOF membrane is remarkably enhanced via vitrification. The separation factors of the MOF glass membrane for H2 /CH4 , CO2 /N2 and CO2 /CH4 mixtures are 50.7, 34.5, and 36.6, respectively, far exceeding the Robeson upper bounds.

Halogenated Metal–Organic Framework Glasses and Liquids

The synthesis of four novel crystalline zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) structures using a mixed-ligand approach is reported. The inclusion of both imidazolate and halogenated benzimidazolate-derived linkers leads to glass-forming behavior by all four structures. Melting temperatures are observed to depend on both electronic and steric effects. Solid-state NMR and terahertz (THz)/far-IR demonstrate the presence of a Zn-F bond for fluorinated ZIF glasses. In situ THz/far-IR spectroscopic techniques reveal the dynamic structural properties of crystal, glass, and liquid phases of the halogenated ZIFs, linking the melting behavior of ZIFs to the propensity of the ZnN4 tetrahedra to undergo thermally induced deformation. The inclusion of halogenated ligands within metal-organic framework (MOF) glasses improves their gas-uptake properties.

Phase diagrams of liquid-phase mixing in multi-component metal-organic framework glasses constructed by quantitative elemental nano-tomography

Several distinct mixing processes and resulting microstructures have recently been reported in multicomponent glasses prepared from multiple metal-organic frameworks. Here, two illustrative examples of multicomponent zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) glasses, the (aTZIF-4-Co)0.5(agZIF-62)0.5 blend and the ag[(ZIF-67)0.2(ZIF-62)0.8] flux melted glass, are studied. These materials are characterized by quantitative X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy in the scanning transmission electron microscope. By advancing a partial ionization cross section methodology using standards of arbitrary morphology, quantitative nanoscale elemental analysis throughout the glass volume is achieved. In turn, phase diagrams describing the mixing states are presented, offering mechanistic insight into the formation of the observed microstructures. Significant miscibility was observed in ag[(ZIF-67)0.2(ZIF-62)0.8]. These findings establish phase-segregation and interdiffusion as two processes in multicomponent glass formation, which explains the different outcomes observed in blending and flux melting.

Broad Mid-Infrared Luminescence in a Metal-Organic Framework Glass.

Metal–organic framework (MOF) glasses are a newly discovered family of melt-quenched glasses. Despite considerable progress in understanding the nature of MOF glasses, their photonic functionalities have not been found so far. Here, we report on the first breakthrough regarding the photonic functionalities of MOF glasses, that is, finding of the luminescence in melt-quenched MOF glasses. The finding was achieved on a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) series, that is, the ZIF-62 series: Zn1–xCox(Im)1.7(bIm)0.3, x = 0, 0.1, and 0.5, where Co substitutes Zn in ZIF-62 forming single-phased solid solutions. Remarkably, we observed broadband mid-infrared (Mid-IR) luminescence (in the wavelength range of 1.5–4.8 μm) in both the crystalline and amorphous solid solutions. The intensity of the luminescence in ZIF glass is gradually enhanced by increasing the level of Co concentration. The observed Mid-IR emission originates from d–d transition of Co ions. The discovery of the luminescence in ZIF-62 glass may pave the way toward new photonic applications of bulk MOF glasses.

Soft Porous Crystals: Extraordinary Responses to Stimulation

Recent years have seen a large increase in the number of reported framework materials, including the nowadays-ubiquitous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Many of these materials show flexibility and stimuli-responsiveness, i.e. their structure can undergo changes of large amplitude in response to physical or chemical stimulation. We describe here a toolbox of theoretical approaches, developed in our group and others, to shed light into these materials' properties. We focus on their behavior under mechanical constraints, temperature changes, adsorption of guest molecules, and exposure to light. By means of molecular simulation at varying scale, we can now probe, rationalize and predict the behavior of stimuli-responsive materials, producing a coherent description of soft porous crystals from the unit cell scale all the way to the behavior of the whole crystal. In particular, we have studied the impact of defects in soft porous crystals, and developed a methodology for the study of their disordered phases (presence of correlated disorder, MOF glasses, and liquid MOFs).
