Supporting New Teachers. The Finnish and Israeli Mentoring Models

In this article, we will have a closer look at two models of teacher mentoring, which for many years have been successfully operating in two culturally different countries: Finland and Israel. Following the methodology of comparative research according to Raymond Boudon, I will identify and briefly characterise the main social mechanisms, which lie behind the particular approach to mentoring in the two analysed models: Self-Determination Theory and Work Motivation (Israel) and Peer Group Mentoring (Finland), including the axiological-rational prerequisites for their application.

Project-based learning and binary lessons off er innovative approaches to improving the educational process, especially when working with minority groups. They provide opportunities for active participation, collaboration, and integration of cultural diff erences, leading to higher quality and more effective education. By implementing these methods, we can create a more inclusive and stimulating learning environment that encourages all students to achieve their potential. The goal of the implemented innovative project is to create an interdisciplinary link between two subjects – ‘Information Technology’ and ‘Organization and Operation of the Food and Beverage Sector’ to motivate students to learn both inside and outside the classroom. Interdisciplinary learning will not replace individual subjects but will bring them closer, complement, develop, and enhance the education. In the development of a specific project, students use their theoretical knowledge in various practical activities. The lessons that are actually conducted are binary because two mentor teachers unite two classes from the first and second high school stages, two academic subjects from the curriculum, in one real classroom with digital conditions. Finding common ground in solving real didactic cases is a process where students are encouraged to perceive, discuss, and reason from the perspective of multiple disciplines, find answers and present results. Acquiring teamwork skills and building clear logical connections between different thematic units are of essential importance for the subsequent life realization of students from minority groups.

Influence of Mentor-Mentee Interaction Patterns on Student Teachers’ Learning to Teach in Public Secondary Schools During Teaching Practicum

This study examined the contribution of mentor-mentee interaction patterns on student teachers’ learning to teach during Teaching practicum (TP). The study objectives are: (i) to understand the interaction patterns between mentor teachers and student teachers during teaching practicum, (ii) to establish how those interaction patterns develop student teachers’ learning to teach. This study adopted a qualitative research approach using in-depth face-to-face interviews conducted twice for each interviewee of not less than forty (40) minutes as part of data collection. The interviews were carried out to six (6) third-year student-teachers who were posted in two neighbouring public secondary schools as their TP sites. The study found that: Mentorship relies much on interpersonal relationships and interaction patterns between student teachers and their mentor teachers. Four (4) possible interaction patterns in TP stations were identified. In practice, there is mentor teacher – student teacher, student teacher – students, student-teacher - student teacher, student teacher – resources interactions. Teacher education programs, policies, and documents recognize and have been stressing the importance and role of mentoring in student teachers, as part of their professional development. Student teachers have had higher expectations of the teachers they want to be in the future, but their way through mentor support is unclear and once they face “reality shock” during TP their efficacy becomes low. This leads to less motivation for a teaching career and increases the attrition rate of future teachers. In-service teachers do not assume the crucial role of assisting student teachers in learning to teach. In such circumstances, some student teachers have been struggling to develop their professional future due to limited mentorship in secondary schools. The study recommends enhanced teacher training programs and continuous in-service professional development models to accommodate sensitive mentorship skills

Description and Utilization of an Educational Platform for Clean Production in Mechanical Engineering

This study introduces a novel educational mentoring platform that emphasises clean manufacturing techniques and is intended to support engineering education and mentorship. The mentoring platform provides practical, project-based learning opportunities in an educational environment. The platform's foundation lies in a mentoring approach through conducting sessions and defined projects. This paper will outline the primary components of a new educational mentoring platform and highlight some of its most important use cases. The mentoring platform enables the creation of programs like the Sustainable Manufacturing Innovation Program, which is showcased in this paper, equipping students with the knowledge to enhance sustainability in mechanical engineering and foster cleaner production startups. The paper briefly overviews the Novel Educational Methodology (NEM) integrated into an e-learning platform for personalized and adaptive learning materials and courses. The combined use of e-learning and mentoring platforms represents a comprehensive educational system, enhancing developmental outcomes while promoting and achieving clean production practices. Both platforms, e-learning and mentoring, are highly adaptable, facilitating the creation of diverse online course materials and mentoring programs across various scientific disciplines.

Post-Epidemic Period Construction of Professional Identities of Elementary School Pre-Service Teacher Mentors in China

Abstract Teacher practicum, a crucial step in transitioning from pre-service to in-service teaching, provides an essential professional development opportunity. This study investigates how elementary school mentors construct their professional identities (PIs) as they guide pre-service teachers (PSTs) through their practicum. Data was collected through interviews with four mentors and four PSTs in elementary schools in China, and a thematic analysis was conducted. The results reveal that in guiding pre-service teachers, the mentors construct four PIs: committed practitioners, role models, lifelong learners, and coaches. The factors affecting the construction of mentors' PIs include job burnout, teacher commitment, teacher learning methods, self-efficacy, teacher knowledge, Chinese traditional culture, and career development experiences.

Competing practice-based mentoring frameworks for student-teachers: between quasi-residency and expedited alternative teacher preparation

ABSTRACT At their best, teacher preparation programmes harness the power of mentoring to provide professional, emotional, and organisational support for novice teachers and student-teachers. While teacher mentoring research provides much information regarding effective practices, little is known about how different preparation tracks structure the mentoring they provide. Based on interviews with student-teachers (n = 24), this paper examines and compares the mentoring experiences of students in two different, highly reputed Israeli teacher preparation tracks; Academia-Classroom and Hotam. The analysis focuses on emerging similarities and differences between the tracks, indicating two structural aspects associated with the intensity of mentoring – the division of mentors’ roles and co-teaching – that hindered or supported the quality of student-teachers’ mentoring experience. It exemplifies that, despite the importance of individual agency and interpretation, structural programmatic features are key factors in shaping teacher preparation processes and outcomes.

Critical care nurses' competence in mentoring students in intensive care units—A cross-sectional study

BackgroundMentors play an important role in the practical education of critical care nursing students in intensive care units, yet little is known about the mentoring competencies of critical care nurses. AimThe aim of this study was to assess Norwegian critical care nurses' competence in mentoring students in intensive care units. DesignThis study has a descriptive, cross-sectional design, utilising a self-administered online survey. SettingsThe study population consisted of critical care nurses who mentor students in Norwegian intensive care units. Participants178 critical care nurses participated in the study. The participants were recruited by contacting the units directly, through social media, and at a national critical care nursing conference. MethodsThe study utilised the Mentors' Competence Instrument, a self-evaluation tool for evaluating mentoring competence. ResultsThe Norwegian critical care nurses generally evaluated their mentoring competence as middle to high level. The “reflection during mentoring” dimension was rated as the highest and “student-centered evaluation” as the lowest competence dimension. The critical care nurses who had formal mentoring education reported significantly higher mentoring competences, but the other demographic characteristics were not related to mentoring competence. Regardless of previous mentoring education, most participants reported a need to further develop their mentoring competencies. ConclusionsEmployers should collaborate with educational institutions to establish a system for continuous competence development for critical care nurse mentors.

Engagement of Preservice Teachers in the Assessment of Their Work-Integrated Learning

Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) stands as a formally supervised and assessed program designed for preservice teachers to apply and refine their teaching skills within school settings. This study addresses the inquiry of how to effectively involve preservice teachers in the assessment of their WIL experiences. Employing participatory action research (PAR) as the chosen methodology, the research engaged with nine preservice teachers actively involved in WIL, a teaching practice officer, and five teachers serving as mentors to the students. Data collection was performed utilizing the principles of free-attitude interviews and participant observation. The ensuing data underwent interpretation and analysis employing the framework of critical discourse analysis. The findings revealed a pronounced need for collaborative efforts among assessors, mentor teachers, lecturers, and preservice teachers. Establishing robust collaboration emerged as the most viable solution for engaging preservice teachers in the assessment of their Work-Integrated Learning experiences.

Mentor Teachers' Perceptions Toward the Pedagogical Competence of Pre-Service Teacher Professional Education, FKIP, University of Palangka Raya in Practical Field Experience

This study aimed to determine student teachers' perceptions about the mastery of pedagogical competencies of students of the PPG Pre-service Study Program at FKIP Palangka Raya University in 2022 in Field Experience Practice. This research uses a quantitative approach with a descriptive research type. The research involved 15 student teachers as subjects, with the object being 62 students of the Pre-service PPG Study Program at FKIP Palangka Raya University in 2022, namely wave I as many as 33 people, and wave II as many as 29 people. Data collection was carried out using a questionnaire that had been validated by three experts and obtained a value of V (Aiken Index) = 0.92> 0.8 including in the high category and a PA value (Percentage of agreement) = 93%, meaning that it was feasible to use to collect data. The results showed that in wave I, 3 students (9.09%) were obtained in the high category, 24 students (72.73%) in the medium category and 6 students (18.18%) in the low category, and wave II, 4 students (13.79%) were obtained in the high category, 20 students (68.97%) in the medium category and 5 students (17.24%) in the low category. From waves I and II, it can be seen that the largest frequency is in the medium category, so it can be concluded that the perceptions of student teachers about the mastery of pedagogical competence of students of the PPG Study Program at FKIP Palangka Raya University in 2022 are in the medium category.

Constructing the Clinical Preparation Field: Re-Envisioning the Role of Pre-Service Teacher Clinical Supervision

Given the difficulties that newly trained teachers currently encounter in entering the profession, it has become increasingly necessary to reexamine the nature of pre-service clinically-based teacher preparation. This paper focuses on the role of clinical supervisors in the context of the College–Field Partnership (CFP), an innovative program that reframes clinical preparation as going beyond a focus on classroom teaching to experiencing the school as a whole. The paper is based on “Self-in-Field” action research (SiFAR) involving eight experienced clinical supervisors who were leaders of teams of clinical supervisors in the CFP program. Through joint reflection on their professional practice, they came to see the clinical supervisor’s role as constructing a “clinical preparation field” that extends beyond the traditional “triad” of pre-service teacher, mentor teacher, and clinical supervisor. Constructing an expanded clinical preparation field involves building relationships among a wide variety of actors within the school and the academic preparation program as well as fostering learning and development for students and school staff alike. Two important implications of this new role for clinical supervisors were the need to become more skilled at (1) dealing with the emotional elements of school practice and (2) facilitating organizational learning processes in the school.

Successful Practices of Novice Urban Physical Education Teachers

Purpose: Guided by the cultural relevance cycle, this study examined experiences of two novice physical education teachers in urban schools. We focused on successes that teachers encountered while navigating their novice years. Methods: Two purposefully sampled participants completed five journal entries and five semistructured interviews lasting between 45 and 90 min each. To promote trustworthiness, we utilized multiple coders, a peer debriefer, and triangulated data from multiple sources. Participants reviewed themes and responded to researchers’ interpretations. Results: We present the results through three major themes. The first theme involves knowledge of students and community. The second theme describes belonging in the school and community, and the third theme discusses curricular realignment. Discussion and Conclusion: By focusing on elements that empowered novice teachers to find success, initial teacher preparation programs and in-service teacher mentoring programs in urban school districts might identify teaching experiences that may contribute to novice teacher retention.

Learning Management at Private Junior High School

The researcher is interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the learning management in this school because its implementation targets Qur'an tahfidz with a focus on the quality of Qur'anic tahsin using Al-Baqry to recognize the students' learning methods. This study utilizes a case study approach, with data collection techniques including interviews, document analysis, and observation. Data analysis involves creating detailed descriptions of the case, data reduction through summarization, focusing on essential aspects, identifying themes and patterns, and eliminating unnecessary information to provide a clearer picture. The researcher then presents the data to facilitate understanding of the findings. Finally, conclusions are drawn, and data validity is ensured through credibility testing and confirmability using triangulation. The research results indicate that the lesson planning at MTTQ School Private Junior High School includes achieving learning objectives, designing lesson plans, syllabi, semester programs, and annual programs. The organization of Qur'an memorization learning utilizes all learning components, including task distribution and selecting teaching tactics. The implementation involves face-to-face small group sessions, with one mentor teacher responsible for 8-10 students. The schedule is developed by the Tahfidz supervisor, school principal, and mentor teachers, allocating 6 hours a day for Tahfidz learning, divided into 3 sessions: 1 hour for memorization, 3 hours for review, and 2 hours for additional memorization. Evaluation methods include introductory supervision, ongoing supervision, and feedback supervision.

This article provides a comprehensive overview of action research, emphasizing its significance as a systematic inquiry process conducted by English teachers within their own classrooms to improve teaching and learning. The main goal is to identify the popularity and usage of Action Research among EFL teachers, at the same time Master’s degree students. The study explores Action Research's role in improving teachers' professional growth and the basic knowledge of the graduate students on Action Research. Action research was first conducted in Kazakhstan in 2012 as a joint project of the University of Cambridge and Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools (NIS) with the goal of improving educational practices. The quantitative research was conducted on the basis of the discipline “Action Research” for the 1st year graduate students of the profession “Two Foreign Languages” of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. The results of a survey given to Master's students have different levels of familiarity and experience with Action Research. The study will assist to identify the spread and the usage of Action Research among EFL teachers in Kazakhstan. In addition, the study will help school administrators, teacher mentors to understand obstacles faced by EFL teachers and improve educational system in Kazakhstan.

The use of the mentoring institute on the example of teaching economic disciplines: patterns and implementation specifics

Mentoring in higher education is a necessity and an obligatory process of transferring the experience of teaching staff to young teachers. Statistics show that the younger generation is not eager to devote themselves to teaching, sometimes because they are not aware of all aspects of the profession. The mentoring task in higher education is to involve the younger generation in a unique pedagogical process. The work is complex, requiring from the parties a creative approach and the ability to turn a young specialist in the direction of pedagogy. Everything is important in this process from understanding the financial component to recognizing the social significance of the activity. Mentoring for young teachers, graduate students, masters in teaching economic disciplines, along with the regularities of the process has its own significant features, which arise from the economic reality study specifics, as well as the presence of numerous concepts and theories that interpret this economic reality itself and on the basis of this proposing a certain state economic policy. The issue becomes relevant also because the approaches to the federal state educational standards are being transformed in Russia.

Implementasi Pendidikan Inklusi di Sekolah Dasar: Tantangan Dan Strategi Efektif

This study aims to identify challenges and formulate effective strategies in implementing inclusive education in primary schools. A qualitative approach with descriptive methods was used to gain an in-depth understanding of the issue. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews and documentation involving school principals, classroom teachers, special mentor teachers and parents. The research findings show that the main challenges in implementing inclusive education are the lack of teachers' understanding and skills, limited facilities and infrastructure and resistance from parents. To overcome these challenges, several strategies were proposed, including continuous professional development and training for teachers, improving school facilities and infrastructure, and socialising and educating parents and communities. The case study of SD Negeri 13 Pandeglang shows that collaboration between the school, government and community can improve the acceptance and success of inclusive education. Support from the government in the form of clear policies and provision of adequate resources is also very important. In conclusion, with the right strategies and adequate support, inclusive education can be effectively implemented in primary schools, benefiting all students, including those with special needs.

Adaptation and validation of Mentoring for Effective Mathematics Teaching (MEMT) – Mentee and Mentor scales to Turkish

ABSTRACT This article aims to reveal the adaptation and validation process of the Mentoring for Effective Mathematics Teaching (MEMT) -Mentee and -Mentor scales in the Turkish context, which was developed to examine preservice mathematics teachers’ and mathematics mentor teachers’ perceptions of mentoring practices within the Five-factor mentoring model. In the direction of this purpose, two studies were conducted between the years of 2020 and 2022. Within the first study, the instruments were translated into Turkish, validity and reliability analyses were conducted. Then, the second study was conducted to strengthen linguistic and cultural revisions of the instruments. The result of the studies showed that the Turkish versions of the instruments for mentor teachers and preservice teachers’ perceptions of mentoring practices is usable. Furthermore, according to descriptive statistics, preservice teachers and mentor teachers gave high scores for each factor in the instruments, and the practices about Personal Attributes were perceived by them as among the most performed practices.

The impact of mentoring in higher education on student career development: a systematic review and research agenda

ABSTRACT Studies published over the last four decades provide the basis for a systematic review of the impact of mentoring in higher education (HE) on student career development. We review 73 papers published between 1986 and 2023 and develop a framework to examine the relationships between mentoring approaches and career development outcomes. Here, we distinguish between different student populations (female students, under-represented groups). Notwithstanding an overall positive verdict on mentoring's career development potential, with particular emphasis on career choice and transitioning behaviour, the results are not always positive, and many nuances in the data are evident. At a time of increased concern about student transitions into the labour market, practical implications can be derived which may strengthen mentoring's benefits, e.g. the value of peer mentoring for female students, and cultural proximity of mentors for under-represented minority students pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) careers. Key research recommendations include:(1) developing novel impact indicators related to emotion such as career inspiration and passion; (2) examining under-researched impact indicators related to non-traditional student careers (e.g. entrepreneurial intentions), and employment and socioeconomic impact indicators; and (3) investigating the role of context and mentoring content and delivery modalities, in helping to explain inconsistent findings across the reviewed papers.

How to achieve ‘egalitarian’ interaction between student teachers and mentor teachers? A study of a one-school-year teacher practicum in Germany

ABSTRACT The present study investigated how student teachers and mentor teachers in a one-school-year teacher practicum in Germany interacted in an ‘egalitarian’ way despite their experience-based gap in expertise, status and power. Our study is embedded in a participatory research context to involve the agents of change. The sample consisted of 57 student teachers and 98 mentor teachers in primary and lower secondary education. We used the critical incidents technique; critical incidents were collected through focus group discussions and analysed by qualitative content analysis. Egalitarian interaction was achieved through the participants flexibly changing roles in providing and receiving feedback and the use of an ‘experimental room’ where both student teachers and mentor teachers could reflect on and develop their teaching practice (through co-constructive knowledge creation while working together on teaching-related activities). For student teachers, being assigned the status of a ‘colleague’ demonstrated egalitarian interaction. Implications for developing participatory-involved mentoring concepts were discussed.
