Information Technology and the Data Jungle

This stroll down memory lane highlights the changes brought about by technology that enable economists to process more data faster than could have been imagined when Marcuss began her career in 1968. The challenges of the “data jungle” remain, however. There must be an ongoing effort to know precisely what each economic-statistic measures, why it matters, and to whom. NABE has been, and will continue to be, in the forefront of this effort.

Trouble on Memory Lane: Adults and Self-Retrospection in Researching Youth

Ethnographers of youth often invoke adolescent memories in relation to their informants. This article examines memory as a concern for ethnographers who study young people. It suggests that this rhetorical strategy heightens the narrator’s authority and authenticates the author’s speaking position, pulling the center of the story from the youthful informants toward the adult researcher. At the same time, this strategy ignores power relations between adults and youth. The article explores multiple representations of memory, the social construction of youth, and these effects in an example of research. The article argues that memory is not a form of bias but a problematic that must be addressed to provide adequate attention to the youthful informant’s legitimacy and authority as an interpreter of experience.

Chicagoland remembers....

A walk down memory lane is provided from the perspective of Chicagoland nurses who have each provided neonatal care for 20 years or greater. Sixteen nurses were interviewed, representing at least 11 different units in the area. Combined, over 390 years of neonatal care have been provided by these nurses. An oral history was obtained by asking each the same three questions: What has changed in the past 20 years in neonatal nursing? What are your fondest memories of neonatal nursing in the past 20 years? What drives your "passion for little people"? This special group of nurses will warm your heart with their responses. They are a reminder of how much neonatal nursing has changed, but also how the "passion for little people" remains the same. On this special anniversary, nurses in many units, not only in Chicago, will be able to reflect with similar stories.

Preface: Peregrinations down memory lane

In 1960 I was looking for an interesting thesis topic. My advisor, Professor Harold Hand of the University of Illinois, suggested that I combine my two interests of language teaching and psychology and gave me a month to research the possibilities in this area. After a concentrated period of reading and searching, I gathered together my 3 by 5 cards and went to see Professor Hand. I reported to him that, from my reading, it was clear that, in the present state of the field, it would be impossible to apply the psychologists' theories to the processes of language learning and teaching. To this he replied “Then you go and do it.”

Opening the Network for Psychiatric Nursing Research conference (see News, page 3; Interact, page 5), Martin Ward took a trip down memory lane. But was it just nostalgia that persuaded the director of the RCN’s mental health programme to make unfavourable comparisons between the training offered to today’s mental health nurses with that delivered to their counterparts prior to the onset of Project 2000?

“Media Memory Lane” interventions in an Alzheimer's day care center

The present study developed and systematically evaluated two inventions (Musical Memory Lane and Video Memory Lane) which present nostalgic music and videos to 15 plus day care clients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) in an easy-to-access, push button, picture format. Systematic observations indicated that the Memory Lanes had a favorable impact on engagement, stimulated positive affect and activity-related talking, while also reducing fidgeting. There was no impact on sleeping and general interaction. During free time, people chose a Memory Lane activity significantly more often than other activities and remained engaged with it for a longer time. The Memory Lanes show great potential for providing meaningful and easily accessible activities to people with dementia. Additional studies are needed in other care settings and to determine if the Memory Lanes can decrease agitation and enhance memory function.

On becoming counselling psychology in the BPS: establishing the Counselling Psychology Section

In his letter from the Chair, Alan Frankland states that counselling psychology is now the second largest division in the British Psychological Society (Frankland, 1998). This was not always the case, so please join me on a brief trip down memory lane. In this article I chronicle the process from conception to birth of counselling psychology within the Society.
