In this paper we present measurements of the thermal expansion of melt-textured YBaCuO in thetemperature range 30–300 K by means of optical fibre sensors. The sample, which had a size of38 × 38 × 18 mm3, was prepared by our standard melt-texturing process using SmBaCuOseeds. One fibre containing three Bragg gratings which act as strainsensors was glued to the sample surface with two sensors parallel to theab-plane and onesensor parallel to the c-axis. The sample was cooled down to a minimum temperature of 30 K ina vacuum chamber using a closed cycle refrigerator. In the temperaturerange we used, the thermal expansion coefficients are in the range of(3–9) × 10−6 K−1 (ab-direction)and (5–13) × 10−6 K−1 (c-direction).
