The D.O.'s: Osteopathic Medicine in America

Back in 1971, the history of homeopathy, the largest unorthodox sect of the 19th century, was examined by this reviewer. Now, more than a decade later, osteopathy, homeopathy's 20th-century counterpart, has been studied by Norman Gevitz, a medical sociologist trained at the University of Chicago. Gevitz provides what may well be the definitive study of the early development of osteopathy, beginning with the ideas and actions of its founder, Andrew Taylor Still. The book has two distinct themes. First, it describes the transition in the philosophy and practice of osteopathy from a radical system to one similar to that of orthodox medicine. By the beginning of the 20th century, osteopathic leaders had accepted a multidimensional conception of disease, and osteopathic educational standards began to improve. Osteopaths sought to upgrade their colleges, intending to improve their graduates' chances of passing licensing examinations, and thereby raising the status of America's osteopaths. This

Author's note: As will be obvious from reading Professor Trautmann's article in this issue of MOBIUS, she is the expert on the subject of medicine and literature. A mere historian ventures afield only to underscore the point that I believe literature has much to offer my own colleagues in history as well as to everyone concerned with education in the health sciences.

Science at the Bedside: Clinical Research in American Medicine, 1905-1945

The exponential growth in scientific knowledge and technology since the end of World War II has brought about enormous changes in the practice of medicine. These advances could have been made, however, only if a new philosophy of medicine that brought science to the bedside had been developed in the first half of the 20th century. A. McGehee Harvey, one of the major contributors to the advances of 20th-century medicine, describes the trends, the institutions, and the people that laid the groundwork for advancing the United States into its leadership position in medical science in this unusual but rather disappointing book on the history of medicine in America between the turn of the century and the end of World War II. From Almshouse to Hospital: The Shaping of Philadelphia General Hospital

After almost 250 years, one of the nation's first, and most illustrious, hospitals closed. Its demise was a particularly dramatic but representative symptom of a more general decay in the quality of public medicine in America's older cities. The gradual differentiation of municipal welfare mechanisms from almshouse to hospital is traced; it has been an elusive and incomplete evolution.

Hall Jackson and the Purple Foxglove: Medical Practice and Research in Revolutionary America 1760-1820

The title and subtitle of this book might well be reversed, for it is primarily a history of medicine in America during the revolutionary and early national periods. (The revolutionary era may be stretched to 1790, but never as late as 1820.) Most of the book serves as background to the introduction into American medicine of digitalis, a derivative of the foxglove plant, as treatment for dropsy, the 18th-century description of a combination of symptoms now associated with congestive heart failure. Digitalis was added to American medical treatment by Hall Jackson as a result of his correspondence with the English physician William Withering in 1786, but neither these men nor other contemporary practitioners understood the drug's action on the heart. The excellent discussion of 18th-century concepts and research on dropsy is found halfway through the book, and detailed description of the introduction of digitalis begins on page 201. The first

The Healers: The Rise of the Medical Establishment

One of the great gaps in medical literature has been a brief history of medicine in America. Monographs and specialized studies, biographies and critical analyses are abundant, but there has been no recent comprehensive exposition. Duffy's new book is therefore very welcome indeed. The author provides a panorama of medicine in America that ranges from the early 16th century to the third quarter of the 20th, and from Indian medicine of pre-Columbian times to malpractice insurance in the 1970s. During the past few months, we in Britain have shown considerable interest in the American bicentennial celebrations. When the circumstances are recalled, this attitude is perhaps surprising, but there have certainly been many events to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, ranging from an impressive exhibition at the Royal Maritime Museum at Greenwich to much less ambitious affairs in quite small communities. Clinical Approaches to Teaching Legal Medicine to Physicians: Medicolegal Emergencies and Consultations

Physicians-in-training generally have insufficient exposure to legal medicine to prepare them for the medicolegal problems they will encounter in practice. This Article outlines the current structure of the field of legal medicine in America, and sets forth two strategies with clinical orientations for teaching legal medicine to physicians-in-training: (1) providing a didactic course offering accurate and practical information on medicolegal emergency situations; and (2) establishing a consultation service in legal medicine capable of providing clinical information or training in such settings as the emergency room, the outpatient departments, and the inpatient wards.

SUMMARY. — From 1713 to 1944, 213 medical theses were defended in the Ecole de Médecine of Montpellier by students from Continental and Insular America. Their distribution by country is analysed, and some indication is given of subjects treated in 42 of the theses which relate to the history of medicine in America. Appendix I gives a list of the number of theses presented each year, and Appendix II gives a chronological list of all 213 theses, with author, title and bibliographical data.

Ear Acupuncture Therapy

Between 1949 and 1971, we lost communication with the scientific world of the Peoples' Republic of China. In this period, the field of medicine flourished as a merger of the existing traditional medicine and Western medicine, with a great deal of exciting experimentation documented in the major scientific centers of Nanking, Shanghai, and Peking. Acupuncture therapy, which includes the use of ear points, has yet to enjoy the credibility of organized medicine in America. As early as 1281, the Treasury of Health noted that the 5 viscera, 6 bowels, and 12 meridians joined in the ear. The ear and its relationship with the internal organs were mentioned in Illustrations of Miscellaneous Diseases , published in 1773 during the Ch'ing period.
