Abstract

During the past few months, we in Britain have shown considerable interest in the American bicentennial celebrations. When the circumstances are recalled, this attitude is perhaps surprising, but there have certainly been many events to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, ranging from an impressive exhibition at the Royal Maritime Museum at Greenwich to much less ambitious affairs in quite small communities.
