Personnel, Gate Count, and Hours of Operation in ARL Science & Technology Libraries: A Comparison with Medical School Libraries

Information collected on personnel, gate count, and hours of operation in academic science and technology libraries for 1992-93 is discussed and analyzed. These data are part of a more comprehensive survey conducted by the ACRL Science and Technology Section's Committee on Comparison of Science and Technology Libraries. The data are then compared to similar data taken from the 1992-93 survey of academic health sciences libraries. Potential comparisons with other library surveys are briefly mentioned. Information reported by type of library includes numbers and categories of staff ratios of professional to support and hourly wage staff ratios of administrative to public and technical services staff gate count and hours of operation.

There was an interesting article requested for photocopy many times through the interlibrary loan at Kawasaki Medical School Library. The article was in the field of statistics, and applicants for photocopy were doctors or researchers in clinical medicine. What is the article? Why do they request it? How do they use it? This paper was written to analyze and evaluate the field of statistics and citation data to solve these questions of a librarian. Results showed that the article was highly esteemed in the field of statistics and that the number of times the article had been cited was absolutely more than any other in the same field. Also, this paper shows that the number of times the article is cited and photocopies requested will increase.

Problem-Based Learning

Problem-based learning (PBL) has brought many new roles for the medical school library staff that encompass both facilitator and curricular functions. Emerging roles for the reference staff include that of library liaison, where each PBL group is assigned a librarian with whom they may consult on information issues. Typically, the liaison role does not lend itself to the librarian becoming a formal or integral member of the PBL group. However, a liaison who has a succinct presentation on information issues for their group at semester's beginning will find that their advice is sought and valued by PBL group members.

Nowadays, medical libraries at general hospitals (medical libraries) are experiencing diverse changes, such as the need for Internet access and multimedia in the face of tight budgets. In this report, the present state of affairs of medical libraries facing diverse changes and the need for support from medical school libraries are described. Currently, medical libraries are struggling with the problems of a lack of human resources and lack of quality resources. In an attempt to solve these problems, a network has been established among medical libraries. Altough the network helps to improve the quality of service, less than 10% of all medical libraries have joined the network. Mutual aid among medical libraries and support from medical school libraries are indispensable for medical libraries to meet the demands of users. Medical libraries request that medical school libraries provide training courses and organize support for medical libraries in regard to various resources. Therefore, good relationships between medical libraries and medical school libraries are essential.

CD-ROM in Ghanaian Libraries : a survey

Summarizes the main findings of a survey of the availability and use of CD-ROM services in three Ghanaian libraries : the National Science and Technology Library and Information Centre (NASTLIC) at the Ghana Science and Technology Information Network (GHASTINET); the University of Ghana Medical School Library; and the Balme Library of the University of Ghana. The survey found that all the CD-ROM facilities are on open access; that no library is charging fees for CD-ROM use at present; and that users are very satisfied with CD-ROM services. Presents recommendations for future development of CD-ROM services in Ghanaian libraries.

Computer-assisted instruction: MR imaging of the knee.

Computer-assisted education offers a unique method of learning that is complementary to conventional learning techniques. The regional anatomy of musculoskeletal magnetic resonance (MR) imaging lends itself well to discrete learning modules on the computer. This article describes a computer-assisted educational program for MR imaging of the knee. The program is divided into four sections: MR imaging physics, anatomy, pathology, and a quiz. The program has cross-references between the sections that allow comparison of normal versus pathologic findings, review of specified pathologic entities, and self-testing of comprehension. The student can progress through the program in a linear or nonlinear fashion at his or her own pace. All images in the program were digitally acquired with an MR imager and transferred directly to the computer used to develop the program. The program is available throughout the radiology department on a local area network and in the medical school library on stand-alone units. The program is currently being used at a medical school as a supplement to the recently implemented problem-based learning curriculum and for resident education.

Obstetrics and Gynecology: A History and Iconography

The new version of Dr Speert's handsomely illustrated volume reflects the intellectual authority, reading pleasure, and excellent illustrations readers associate with the 1973 edition. The publisher's front matter advises that<i>Obstetrics and Gynecology: A History and Iconography</i>is now printed on acid-free paper with strong and durable binding materials. The publisher is to be congratulated for according Dr Speert's repository of copies of centuries of art and photography a quality of material that will extend its life. Such generosity should prove useful as well: my own medical school's library has had to repair the 1970s version. It is apparently heavily used and deserves the complement of production standards appropriate for books of lasting value. Obstetrics and gynecology seems well covered to this layman. Chapter headings, unchanged from the previous edition, run the same wide (though logical) gamut, from the first chapter, "The Female Anatomy," through chapter 19, "Obstetric and Gynecologic

Getting the best out of your medical library part 1 — The basic services and printed resources

A Postgraduate Medical Centre or Medical School library can play a valuable support role in the anaesthetist's clinical work and research by providing printed resources through its stock of monographs, periodicals and indexes. These are enhanced by the human resources of the library staff who can assist the clinician with additional services. In part one, the applications and use of Index Medicus, Excerpta Medica and Science Citation Index are described and the development of the individual's information-seeking methods is discussed. Part two will deal with electronic forms of information and information retrieval and copyright.

Pediatric Kidney Disease

The first edition of Pediatric Kidney Disease was an excellent reference book for pediatric nephrologists, pediatric residents, and medical students, but, as the years passed without update, its usefulness diminished. No other textbooks of pediatric nephrology have matched the comprehensiveness of the 1978 Pediatric Kidney Disease , not even the second edition of Pediatric Nephrology , edited by Holliday, Barratt, and Vernier and published in 1987. The long-awaited second edition of Pediatric Kidney Disease is also a fine, comprehensive, two-volume textbook. Hopefully, the third edition will be published in less than 14 years. As was true with the first edition, this textbook should be included in all medical school libraries, pediatric departmental libraries (if the department can afford its high price), and the personal libraries of pediatric nephrology fellows and pediatric nephrologists. For the academic pediatric nephrologist, of course, it will lack most recent references but can serve as a basis for

Medical school librariesʼ handling of articles that report invalid science

In 1989-90 the authors conducted a nationwide study to examine how academic medical libraries handled articles that report invalid science and to determine the effectiveness of any policies implemented to limit the use of such articles. Ninety-five of the 127 medical school libraries the authors surveyed completed questionnaires analyzing policy and attitude issues. Eighty-four of these libraries manually reviewed the available copies they held of ten retracted articles. Of the 811 copies of the retracted, invalid articles reviewed, 742 (91.5%) were not tagged as being invalid. Seventy-nine percent of the libraries had tagged none of the retracted studies and only 16% had policies for managing articles that report invalid science. Academic librarians reflected a common attitude against perceived library censorship and emphasized the user's role in assuring validity. The nation's medical libraries, at least in part by intent, do not commonly identify or have policies to handle the invalid articles they hold. The authors conclude that biomedical researchers, clinicians, and teachers should not assume published studies held in libraries are inherently valid. The lack of stated policy and the disparate assumptions about the role libraries play in this area may perpetuate the use of invalid articles.

End user training for CD‐ROM Medline: a survey of UK medical school libraries

CD‐ROM is an increasingly successful consumer product. The market is at present going through an experimental period with new openings being sought for specialised products, particularly in the business and financial sectors. The development of CD‐ROM products will undoubtedly be market led, becoming integrated into an end user's working environment rather than being set aside as a separate resource. Consideration of how to train end users to perform successful searches on CD‐ROM databases will become increasingly important as the market for such products grows.

The Best Reference Books in a Medical School Library

Challenged with the task of keeping the reference collection current and useful, the reference staff at the Medical College of Wisconsin sought the opinions of their colleagues at other medical school libraries as to what they valued most in their reference collections. Thirty-nine librarians responded to the questionnaire, listing 213 titles as "essential" for every reference collection, and 130 titles as "gems," or tools that may not be well known, but were personal favorites. There was a consensus among the responding librarians for recommending many standard reference tools. However, there was also a surprising variety of tools mentioned by only one librarian. The compiled lists should offer every medical school library some valuable suggestions for developing their reference collections.

CD-ROM MEDLINE training: a survey of medical school libraries.

Most medical school libraries are attempting to provide some form of training for the CD-ROM MEDLINE user, according to this survey conducted in 1989. User guides and vendor-produced tutorials are helpful but are not usually a major aspect of the training. The training sessions vary considerably in length as well as number of attendees, with individualized training being the most widespread. Few facilities offer advanced classes. A core list of training topics has been identified. Evaluation of the training has been done in only a small percentage of the libraries.

New American medical libraries: report of a study tour.

Descriptions highlighting the design and range of services of modern American libraries are given. Five medical school libraries and the National Library of Medicine are discussed.
