Soil testing is very important in the development planning process, especially to assess the strength and stability of the soil as a foundation base. Improper soil conditions can result in structural damage to buildings. Therefore, soil testing is necessary to provide optimal foundation recommendations, ensuring the safety and sustainability of the building. This information is needed to provide recommendations for appropriate foundations, especially in the context of church construction which often has large and heavy structures. This research aims to evaluate the characteristics of the land around the MRII Church in Ambon City with a focus on the use of sondir technology. This activity covers the importance of a deep understanding of the physical properties of soil in the context of planning and construction of church buildings. The testing method involves the use of mechanical sondir to measure soil characteristics and map subsurface geological structures. Test results show significant variations in characteristics around the church location, with the possibility of rock layers or geological changes that have the potential to affect the construction of the church building and surrounding infrastructure. Based on factual data and sondir testing (CPT) in the field, a drilled pile type foundation is recommended. However, the recommended results can be changed or supplemented with other technical information/data considering that sondir testing cannot directly show the condition of soil layers. It is best to carry out further testing with Hand Boring, NSPT Drilling and laboratory testing to obtain more accurate soil conditions and supporting parameters.

Lead bioaccessibility and commonly measured soil characteristics in Detroit, Michigan

Historical and contemporary use of lead (Pb) in gasoline, paints, and industry have led to its concentration in urban soils, presenting a human health risk, with disproportionate impacts on children living in urban areas. Contaminated soil is one of the major contributors to child Pb exposure. While many residents practicing urban agriculture have their soil tested to determine the amount of soil total Pb present, this measure does not provide a direct indicator of soil Pb bioaccessibility (used to predict bioavailability). Because bioavailability is ultimately necessary to determine the exposure risk, we aimed to gain a more refined understanding of Pb risk using measurements commonly performed as part of typical agricultural soil tests. Accordingly, we sampled soils from 142 residential parcels located in Detroit, MI. Soils were evaluated for: pH, organic matter content, cation exchange capacity, phosphorus, sulfur, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and sodium and total and in-vitro bioaccessible (IVBA) Pb. Detroit soil IVBA Pb ranged from 4.5% to 81%, with a mean of 39%. Total Pb, organic matter (OM) content and soil pH were found to be the most important predictors of Pb bioaccessibility. Soils typically had a relatively low OM content (mean of 5%) however, samples with higher OM content had lower IVBA (e.g., the IVBA was 15.2% smaller in soils with 7.5% OM). Soils were typically slightly basic (mean of 7.8); however, samples with pH closer to neutral had lower IVBA (e.g., the IVBA was 11.6% smaller in soils with a pH of 7.3). The proximity of soil sampling locations to former smelter locations was also found to influence Pb bioaccessibility, with samples closer to former Pb smelter sites having a somewhat higher average IVBA. Results suggest increasing soil OM content in urban soils will reduce Pb bioaccessibility. Building soil OM would therefore improve both soil fertility and decrease soil Pb bioaccessibility, imparting a predicted decrease in exposure risks.

Broadleaf Trees Increase Soil Aggregate Stability in Mixed Forest Stands of Southwest China

In soils, high aggregate stability often represents higher quality and anti-erosion ability; however, few studies have systematically analyzed how different forest stands affect soil aggregate stability. We selected five typical mixed forest stands on Jinyun Mountain in Chongqing, China, as research sites to evaluate soil aggregate stability. Within these sites, we analyzed the factors influencing soil aggregate stability in different stands by measuring soil characteristics and root traits. Soil aggregation stability, plant root traits, and soil properties varied among the mixed forest stands. The broadleaf tree mixed forest improved soil aggregate stability by 57%–103% over that of the Pinus massoniana mixed forest. The soil organic carbon, cation exchange capacity, Fe-Al oxides, and fine root proportion were positively correlated with soil aggregate stability. The specific root length and very fine root proportion were negatively correlated with soil aggregate stability, whereas the fine root proportion was positively correlated with this property. Specifically, we found that arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi did not affect soil aggregate stability in acid rain areas. Structural equation modeling indicated that soil aggregate stability was closely related to soil physicochemical properties and plant root characteristics. Predictive factors accounted for 69% of the variation in mean weight diameter, and plant root traits influenced soil aggregate stability by affecting soil organic matter, texture, and Fe-Al oxides. This study elucidated the impact of soil physicochemical properties and plant root characteristics on soil aggregate stability in different forest stand types, which has crucial implications for optimizing the management of various forest types.

The Use of Faba Bean Cover Crop to Enhance the Sustainability and Resiliency of No-Till Corn Silage Production and Soil Characteristics

Sustainable corn production requires a dramatic shift toward natural soil fertility rather than relying solely on synthetic fertilizers. Cover crops play an important role in improving the productivity of subsequent row crops through improving soil properties. The main goal of this study was to investigate if increasing cover crop biomass through applying a higher density can enhance soil characteristics in the short term and contribute more nitrogen to succeeding corn silage. In a two-year field study (2018–2019), the influence of faba bean (Vicia faba L.) as a cover crop on soil characteristics and corn silage (Zea mays L.) production was evaluated. Treatments consisted of five levels of faba bean density (0, 25, 35, 40, and 80 plants m−2) and four application rates of urea-based nitrogen fertilizer (0, 100, 200, and 300 kg ha−1) in a no-till system. The measured soil characteristics were not significantly affected through increasing cover crop density to 80 plants m−2. The faba bean roots comprised 33% of total biomass in densities ranging from 25–40 plants m−2. The highest total N yield (root + shoot) was 133 kg N ha−1, obtained from 40 faba bean plants m−2. The faba bean root decomposed faster than the shoot, and the addition of N to the corn accelerated 50% N release from the roots but had no significant effect on shoot decomposition. Corn planted after 40 plants m−2 faba bean yielded 28% more than the corn with no faba bean. Corn yielded less in no-cover-crop fields even when it received the highest synthetic N rate (300 kg N ha−1), indicating the value of including faba bean in rotation with corn.

Water Dynamics and Hydraulic Functions in Sandy Soils: Limitations to Sugarcane Cultivation in Southern Brazil

Crop cultivation on sandy soils is susceptible to water stress. Therefore, we determined the physical-hydric attributes of a Latossolo Vermelho distrófico (Oxisol) in northwestern Paraná state, Brazil. Soil samples were collected at depth ranges of 0 to 0.2 m, 0.2 to 0.4 m, and 0.4 to 0.6 m. We measured clay, silt, sand, fine and coarse sand contents, soil particle density, soil bulk density, total porosity, microporosity, and macroporosity. We also measured soil characteristics such as saturated and unsaturated soil hydraulic conductivities, pore distribution, water retention, available water capacity, and easily available water. We also estimated soil moisture, matric potential at field capacity, and time at field capacity. Validation of associations among these soil physical-hydric attributes was performed using principal component analysis. For the sandy soils analyzed, the distributions of coarse and fine sand fractions were measured for better evaluation of the soil’s physical and hydric attributes. Higher coarse sand contents increased soil hydraulic conductivities, maximum pore diameter, and macroporosity while reducing microporosity. Fine sand content reduced conductivity and increased soil water retention in subsurface layers. Simulated sugarcane yield increased with soil water storage. These results support improving crop simulation modeling of sugarcane to support sustainable intensification in regions with sandy soils.

Assessment and Correlation of Saline Soil Characteristics using Electrical Resistivity

Soil salinity is becoming one of the most devastating environmental hazards over the years. Soil investigation involves fast, low cost and non disturbing methods to measure soil characteristics for both construction projects as well as for agricultural use. The electrical resistivity of saline soils is greatly governed by salt concentration and the presence of moisture in soil matrix. Experimental results of this investigation highlight that there is a significant relationship between the electrical resistivity of soil samples mixed with chloride solutions (NaCl, KCl, and MgCl2) at various concentrations, and soil physical properties. Correlations represented by quadratic functions were obtained between electrical resistivity and soil characteristics, namely, water content, degree of saturation and salt concentration. This research reveals that the obtained correlations between electrical resistivity, salt concentration, water content and degree of saturation are effective for predicting the characteristics of salt affected soils in practice, which constitute a governing element in the assessment of saline lands sustaining infrastructure.

Predictor Selection and Machine Learning Regression Methods to Predict Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity From a Large Public Soil Database

Highlights In this study, six machine learning (ML) models were developed using a large database of soils to predict saturated hydraulic conductivity of these soils using easily measured soil characteristics. Tree-based regression models outperformed all other ML models tested. Neural networks were not suitable for predicting saturated hydraulic conductivity. Clay content, followed by bulk density, explained the highest amount of variation in the data of the predictors examined. Abstract. One of the most important soil hydraulic properties for modeling water transport in the vadose zone is saturated hydraulic conductivity. However, it is challenging to measure it in the field. Pedotransfer Functions (PTFs) are mathematical models that can predict saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) from easily measured soil characteristics. Though the development of PTFs for predicting Ks is not new, the tools and methods used to predict Ks are continuously evolving. Model performance depends on choosing soil features that explain the largest amount of Ks variance with the fewest input variables. In addition, the lack of interpretability in most “black box” machine learning models makes it difficult to extract practical knowledge as the machine learning process obfuscates the relationship between inputs and outputs in the PTF models. The objective of this study was to develop a set of new PTFs for predicting Ks using machine learning algorithms and a large database of over 8000 soil samples (the Florida Soil Characterization Database) while incorporating statistical methods to inform predictor selection for the model inputs. Of the machine learning (ML) models tested, random forest regression (RF) and gradient-boosted regression (GB) gave the best performances, with R2 = 0.71 and RMSE = 0.47 cm h-1 on the test data for both. Using the permutation feature importance technique, the GB and RF regression models showed similar results, where clay content described the most variation in the data, followed by bulk density. The implication of this study is that, when predicting Ks using the Florida Soil Characterization Database, priority should be given to obtaining quality data on clay content and bulk density as they are the most influential predictors for estimating Ks. Homogenization of bryophyte species after alpine grassland restoration.

The causes of decreasing plant species richness include abandonment of traditional management and the spread of invasive species, even in alpine habitats. Studies on the restoration and management of alpine habitats are predominantly focused on vascular plants, although an important part of alpine vegetation and its diversity is formed by bryophytes. We used bryophytes to indicate changes that occur after the clearcutting of nonindigenous dwarf pine (Pinus mugo Turra) and attempted to reveal the community to which the development of bryophyte species structure was directed. We compared species richness and composition between surveys to test for changes in spatial heterogeneity bryophyte communities. We also tried to reveal the main ecological drivers of the restoration process. The study was performed in the (sub)alpine area of the Eastern High Sudetes Mts. (the Czech Republic). We estimated bryophyte species cover and compared the composition of the bryophyte community in autochthonous grassland areas, areas under the dwarf pine canopy, and clearcut areas to reveal the pattern of shifts 9 years after the treatment. We also measured soil characteristics to reveal the environmental habitat conditions. Evidence of taxonomic homogenization of habitat after dwarf pine removal was found. Light conditions and attributes of litter were the driving factors of successional changes in the bryophyte communities, which led to taxonomic homogenization. This finding explains the slow restoration process due to dwarf pine legacy on the clearcut area. The succession trends were also shaped by unobserved factors, such as climate change and environmental eutrophication. We highly recommended active management and long-term monitoring.

Determination of soil fertility constraints in two paddy soils of the western highland zone of Cameroon

Information on soil fertility status and variability are essential in understanding the potential of soils and their management interventions in agriculture. The present study aimed at examining the soil quality or fertility of two paddy soils with different productivity in the Western Highland Zone of Cameroon. Twelve soil samples were collected in each of both study location at a standard depth of 0-30 cm and analyzed to find soil texture, Organic Carbon (OC), basic cations (Calcium Ca, Magnesium Mg, Potassium K and Sodium Na), Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC), soil pH, phosphorus (P), and Total Nitrogen (TN). Most measured soil characteristics showed different degrees of variability in soil nutrients ranging from low to very high in both soils. Both soils were acidic (pH <5.5), consistently deficient in total nitrogen, phosphorus, basic cations, and had high OC and CEC. Pearson correlation analysis and principal component analysis were used to identify appropriate soil quality indicators. P and Na in Koutaba and P, Mg, and CEC in Santchou constituted minimum data set (MDS) and accounted for 94% and 100% of the quality variation among soils. A Soil Quality Index (SQI) was developed base on the MSD method, Santchou and Koutaba received SQI of 0.48 and 0.73. The paddy soils of Koutaba were more fertile than those of Santchou. The low level of P and Mg were considered to be the major constraints limiting the productivity in both locations. These results suggest that, the management of inherent soil properties is based on-site specific situations.

Kaleka Agroforest in Central Kalimantan (Indonesia): Soil Quality, Hydrological Protection of Adjacent Peatlands, and Sustainability

Increased agricultural use of tropical peatlands has negative environmental effects. Drainage leads to landscape-wide degradation and fire risks. Livelihood strategies in peatland ecosystems have traditionally focused on transitions from riverbanks to peatland forests. Riparian ‘Kaleka’ agroforests with more than 100 years of history persist in the peatlands of Central Kalimantan (Indonesia), where large-scale open-field agricultural projects have dramatically failed. Our field study in a Dayak Ngaju village on the Kahayan river in the Pulang Pisau district involved characterizing land uses, surveying vegetation, measuring soil characteristics, and monitoring groundwater during a period of 16 months. We focused on how local practices and farmer knowledge compare with standard soil fertility (physical, chemical, biological) measurements to make meaningful assessments of risks and opportunities for sustainable land use within site-specific constraints. The Kaleka agroforests around a former settlement and sacred historical meaning are species-rich agroforests dominated by local fruit trees and rubber close to the riverbank. They function well with high wet-season groundwater tables (up to −15 cm) compatible with peatland restoration targets. Existing soil quality indices rate the soils, with low soil pH and high Alexch, as having low suitability for most annual crops, but active tree regeneration in Kaleka shows sustainability.

Soil properties and microbial community in the rhizosphere of Populus alba var. pyramidalis along a chronosequence

By maintaining soil structure and quality, soil microbial communities usually play important role in many forest ecosystem processes, including ecological succession. Understanding changes in the microbial communities of areas afforested with stands of different ages is of interest in ecology. Populus alba var. pyramidalis Bunge has been widely planted in Northwest China for ecological restoration. Rhizospheric soil samples were collected from 4-, 9-, 15-, 25- and 30-year-old plantations of P. alba to measure soil characteristics and soil microbial community diversity using Illumina MiSeq sequencing. The soil nutrition concentration and enzymatic activities decreased with depth of soil layer increased. In terms of stand age, alkaline phosphatase and dehydrogenase and the contents of nitrate N, available P and soil organic content (SOC) increased gradually. According to Illumina MiSeq sequencing results, the fungal and bacterial community structure varied with stand age, and diversity of fungi was less than bacteria. With increasing stand age, fungal community diversity indexes first increased and then decreased, peaked at 25y or 30y. RDA results suggested that soil available P and nitrate N were the most important factors governing fungal community structure, while available P contributed significantly to the variance of the bacterial community. Structural equation modelling (SEM) results indicated soil available P, nitrate N and SOC contents largely explained the shift in the microbial community structure along the cultivation chronosequence, and soil enzyme activities were related with changes in microbial community. Our results illustrated that the successional changes in microbial communities in the P. alba plantations can largely be attributed to changes in soil nutrition level along the chronosequence.

Predicting near-saturated hydraulic conductivity in urban soils

Pedotransfer functions (PTFs) provide point predictions of soil hydraulic properties from more readily measured soil characteristics, yet uncertainties and biases in measurement methods, sampling distributions, and boundary conditions can limit accuracy when estimating near-saturated hydraulic conductivity (Kn). These limitations may be particularly problematic in understudied urban landscapes that often contain altered hydraulic properties. To better treat deficiencies in PTF performance, we addressed three objectives, which were to: 1) develop PTFs to predict urban Kn, 2) assess bulk density and coarse fragments as explanatory variables; and 3) evaluate the predictive capability of these PTFs by comparing their output to measured hydraulic conductivity values from three other studies of urban soil hydraulics. We used artificial neural networks (ANN) and random forest (RF) approaches to predict urban Kn, with the training dataset including 307 tension infiltrometer tests and other measurements drawn from urban soil assessments in 11 U.S. cities. The PTFs utilized a hierarchy of inputs, starting with percentage sand, silt, clay, and then adding percentage coarse fragments and bulk density. The ANN models performed similar to the RF models, and all models exhibited similar or better predictive performance as models results collected from published articles. The inclusion of bulk density or coarse fragments did not improve accuracy over soil texture alone. Possible reasons for this result include low correlation between Kn and bulk density and the exclusion of large voids during flow measurements with tension infiltrometers. The models have been made available as an open-source software package to encourage adoption by users working in urban systems.

Enzymes, Manganese, or Iron? Drivers of Oxidative Organic Matter Decomposition in Soils.

Oxidative decomposition of soil organic matter determines the proportion of carbon that is either stored or emitted to the atmosphere as CO2. Full conversion of organic matter to CO2 requires oxidative mechanisms that depolymerize complex molecules into smaller, soluble monomers that can be respired by microbes. Current models attribute oxidative depolymerization largely to the activity of extracellular enzymes. Here we show that reactive manganese (Mn) and iron (Fe) intermediates, rather than other measured soil characteristics, best predict oxidative activity in temperate forest soils. Combining bioassays, spectroscopy, and wet-chemical analysis, we found that oxidative activity in surface litters was most significantly correlated to the abundance of reactive Mn(III) species. In contrast, oxidative activity in underlying mineral soils was most significantly correlated to the abundance of reactive Fe(II/III) species. Positive controls showed that both Mn(III) and Fe(II/III) species are equally potent in generating oxidative activity, but imply conventional bioassays have a systematic bias toward Fe. Combined, our results highlight the coupled biotic-abiotic nature of oxidative mechanisms, with Mn-mediated oxidation dominating within Mn-rich organic soils and Fe-mediated oxidation dominating Fe-rich mineral soils. These findings suggest microbes rely on different oxidative strategies depending on the relative availability of Fe and Mn in a given soil environment.

Reduced benefits of ant occupation for ant-trees in oil palm compared with heavily logged forest

Understanding interactions between species in altered ecosystems is important, as they influence resilience and opportunities for restoration. Here we explore a multipartite interaction between an important early succession myrmecophytic tree in Borneo (Macaranga pearsonii), and its ant mutualists that provide protection from herbivores. We compare the mutualistic system between two highly degraded habitats that are candidates for future restoration: oil palm plantation and recently heavily-logged forest. For each tree we measured tree structure (height, diameter, number of branches), leaf biomass and herbivore damage. We also measured soil characteristics (phosphate and nitrate content, pH, density) and canopy openness as these may influence tree health. For each branch, we quantified number of ant workers, brood, alates and queens as well as number of coccids. The ants tend these symbiotic coccids for their sugar-rich exudate produced by sucking the tree’s sap. We demonstrate that herbivore damage was up to twice as high in oil palm plantation compared to heavily-logged forest. This herbivory increase was not related directly to changes in abiotic conditions or to higher herbivore pressure, but rather to the distribution of the ant workers within the trees. However, trees in oil palm were able to compensate for the increased herbivory by increasing leaf production. For similar ant abundance, fewer branches were occupied in oil palm plantation, and there were relatively more ants in the presence of coccids. Taken together, our findings indicate that although this mutualism has variation in its functioning, with reduced benefits for the tree of ant occupation in oil palm plantation, the mutualism persists in oil palm. Therefore Macaranga pearsonii is a viable candidate for forest restoration (just as in secondary forest) if these trees are allowed to grow in oil palm plantations.

Soil toxic elements evaluation and implementation of apple rejuvenation technology on dry land in Batu, East Java

Apple is subtropical plant that well adapted in several regions in Indonesia. One of them is Batu city in East Java province. Nowadays, Batu city has a problem due to decreasing of apple area land, more than 16 % in the last decade. There are many factors, two of them are plant age and soil condition. Therefore, it was required a research to evaluate soil chemistry and implement apple rejuvenation technology on dry land. This research was conducted from May to December 2015 at five apple areas; Bumiaji, Tulungrejo, Sumbergondo, Punten and Bulukerto. A survey method was done to address first purpose. Soil sample was taken by purposive sampling method and was analyzed in laboratory to measure soil characteristics. Laboratory analysis showed soil metal content very low and under critical value. However, soil pH and organic matter content were not under ideal condition, strong to medium acid and 30 % of area were low organic content (< 2%). Second studied was implementation apple rejuvenation technologies on dry land; high quality seed, simple drip irrigation and soil amelioration.

Inuit cultural practices increase local-scale biodiversity and create novel vegetation communities in Nunatsiavut (Labrador, Canada)

Interpreting present-day biodiversity patterns requires an understanding of the cumulative historic and contemporary effects of cultural practices on ecosystems. Research in ecology is increasingly acknowledging the wide-ranging and enduring effects of cultural practices in shaping landscapes, but long-term transformative effects of Indigenous peoples on landscape are less recognised in the Circumpolar North. The objectives of this research are to determine whether the built environments (BEs) at fishing places express persistent differences in plant communities, compared with visually undisturbed patches at these same sites; and whether plant communities differ in response to Inuit and commercial fishing legacies. This work occurred near the Inuit Community of Makkovik (Nunatsiavut; Labrador, Canada). We surveyed vascular plant community composition at BE patches with Inuit and commercial fishing histories, and at visibly undisturbed patches, and measured soil characteristics including depth, pH and chemical composition. Habitats with BE legacies have plant communities with distinct species composition and abundance. Additionally, plant communities of BEs with Inuit cultural legacies have unique species assemblages, including a high proportion of native, disturbance-tolerant calciphiles. Soil nutrient inputs from Inuit harvesting practices have positive impacts on biodiversity at small scales. Soil analysis indicates that some visually undisturbed patches have cultural legacies that are not expressed by vegetation patterns, and that mechanical disturbance is also a factor shaping the plant communities of BEs. Inuit cultural practices have increased beta diversity in Circumpolar landscapes. We propose that effective biodiversity conservation planning must actively support Indigenous cultural practices that drive biodiversity.

Effect of Tree Presence and Soil Characteristics on Soybean Yield and Quality in an Innovative Alley-Cropping System

Agroforestry is indicated as a farming practice suited to enhance ecosystem services generated by cropping systems. However, farmers are often reluctant to implement agroforestry systems due to the potential yield loss of crops. In a field trial, soybean was intercropped with poplar short-rotation-coppice rows in an alley-cropping system with 13.5 m wide alleys, in order to assess the effect of tree presence on soybean yield and quality. The light availability (LA) was significantly affected by the tree presence, with an increasing effect along the season due to tree growth, being at its lowest in the tree–crop interface positions (West and East). Significant effects of the tree-distance and LA were registered on soybean yield, with the highest reduction of soybean yield in the West (−78%) and East (−35%) positions. Crude fat content in soybean grain did not vary among positions in the alley, while crude protein content was the lowest in the most shaded position (West −8% than the highest value). The assessment of spatial variability among plots of measured soil characteristics highlighted no significant effect of pedological conditions upon soybean yield. Thus, in our study, the LA effect was more important than soil characteristics in determining a detrimental effect of competition for resources between soybean and poplar. Conversely, soybean quality was affected by soil characteristics, since crude fat significantly correlated with soil nutrients, pH, soil organic matter and soil texture.

Longleaf Pine Patch Dynamics Influence Ground-Layer Vegetation in Old-Growth Pine Savanna

Old-growth longleaf pine savannas are characterized by diverse ground-layer plant communities comprised of graminoids, forbs, and woody plants. These communities co-exist with variable-aged patches containing similar-aged trees of longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.). We tested the conceptual model that physical conditions related to the cycle of longleaf pine regeneration (stand structure, soil attributes, fire effects, and light) influence plant species’ composition and spatial heterogeneity of ground-layer vegetation. We used a chrono-sequence approach in which local patches represented six stages of the regeneration cycle, from open areas without trees (gaps) to trees several centuries old, based on a 40-year population study and increment cores of trees. We measured soil characteristics, patch stand structure, fuel loads and consumption during fires, plant productivity, and ground-layer plant species composition. Patch characteristics (e.g., tree density, basal diameter, soil carbon, and fire heat release) indicated a cyclical pattern that corresponded to the establishment, growth, and mortality of trees over a period of approximately three centuries. We found that plants in the families Fabaceae and Asteraceae and certain genera were significantly associated with a particular patch stage or ranges of patch stages, presumably responding to changes in physical conditions of patches over time. However, whole-community-level analyses did not indicate associations between the patch stage and distinct plant communities. Our study indicates that changes in composition and the structure of pine patches contribute to patterns in spatial and temporal heterogeneity in physical characteristics, fire regimes, and species composition of the ground-layer vegetation in old-growth pine savanna.

Improved soil and tomato quality by some biofertilizer products

The use of microbial inoculums is a part of sustainable agricultural practices. Among various bioeffectors, the phosphorus-mobilizing bacteria are frequently used.&#x0D; The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of some industrial biofertilizer inoculums, of containing P-mobilizing bacteria on the quantity and some quality parameters of tomato fruits. Spore-forming industrial Bacillus amyloliquefaciens FZB42 (Rhizovital) as single inoculums and combinations with other Bacillus strains (Biorex) were applied on Solanum lycopersicon Mill. var. Mobil test plant. Soil microbial counts, phosphorus availability, yield and fruit quality, such as total soluble solids (TSS) content and sugars (glucose, fructose) were assessed. The results found that single industrial inoculums of FZB42 product had positive effect on P-availability and fruit quality in the pots. Fruit quality parameters, TSS content, soluble sugars were significantly improved (p&lt;0.05). Such better fruit taste was correlated significantly by the most probable number (MPN) microbial counts. Use of such bioeffector products is supported by the positive interrelation among measured soil characteristics and inside healthy quality parameters of tomato fruits.
