Analisis Semantik Pada Puisi "Sajak Matahari" Karya W.S Rendra

Poetry is a literary work that is produced from someone's experiences. A poem is composed using beautiful language and meaningful words written in the form of verses. To understand the meaning conveyed in a poem, semantic analysis needs to be conducted. Semantics is a branch of linguistics that discusses meaning and significance. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the meanings contained in W.S. Rendra's poem titled "Sajak Matahari" (The Sun Poem). Semantic analysis in this study is focused on analyzing lexical meaning, referential meaning, grammatical meaning, and figurative meaning. The method used in this study is qualitative descriptive method. The qualitative descriptive approach will allow researchers to analyze the details of meaning in the poem to explain the meaning more deeply. In collecting research data, researchers use reading and note-taking techniques. The reading technique is carried out by reading the contents of the poem, then the results of reading the poem to examine the meaning. Note-taking technique is used to record lexical, referential, grammatical, and figurative meanings. The result of the meaning analysis in the poem "Sajak Matahari" is a poem that discusses perseverance/call for creating change in society, thus creating a fair and peaceful situation.

Communicating with Humor: Poetic Exchanges in the L2 Classroom

As we strive to improve speaking skills in the L2 classroom, we often aim at “correct,” standardized language over the actual meaning of the spoken words. With less investment in the content, it is difficult for L2 students to appreciate the interactions and enjoy, for example, humor using the target language as they tend to remain continuously passive in the learning process under the pressure to speak accurately. In order to motivate students to communicate with their own voices in a relaxed learning environment, this report introduces a new way of expression and communication using a target language, that is, the use of linked poetry, in which students follow the rules of a mora/syllable pattern and exchange written poetic expressions with one another. This exercise of student-driven word choice in a stress-free setting triggers laughter and enjoyment that increase students’ incentive to appreciate the meaning of each word and the possibility of word combinations in the target language.

Intellectual functionality of speech in children of older preschool age with logopathology

Background. The purpose of this study is to identify the current state of intellectual functioning, which affects the speech readiness to study at school, of older preschool children with logopathology. The study included 607 older preschool children (5–6 years old), 250 with normotypical psychophysical development and 357 with speech disorders (dyslalia, stuttering, rhinolalia, dysarthria). Materials and methods. To evaluate the intellectual functioning of older preschool children with logopathology, methods were developed aimed at studying visual-motor coordination, auditory-verbal memory, verbal-spatial representation, verbal-logical thinking, verbal attention. Results. The results of the experimental study give a clear idea that there are significant differences in the formation of intellectual functionality between children with logopathology and those with normotypical psychophysical development. Older preschool children with speech disorders had low ability to copy graphic images, violations of independent control and planning their own activities, problems with the consistent reproduction of words, the volume of memorization, the strength of retention of stimuli, the speed and accuracy of reproduction of speech information, the difficulties understanding spatial relations in the addressed and own speech; verbal and logical skills are formed heterogeneously. Some preschoolers with logopatho­logy can classify objects by features, generalize them, understand the figurative meaning of words and the content of texts. Others experience certain difficulties and make many mistakes; their verbal attention is not sufficiently developed, which prevents children from perceiving educational material. Conclusions. Accordingly, low indicators of visual-motor coordination, auditory-verbal memory, verbal-spatial representation, verbal-logical thinking, verbal attention in older preschool children with speech disorders indicate insufficiently formed intellectual functionality. This will affect their speaking readiness and learning the curriculum at school.

Learning Media "ARASIK" in Understanding the Meaning of Nouns for SDLB Deaf Students at SLB Negeri Bogor

Deaf children experience speech and language difficulties due to hearing loss. Children with hearing loss experience delays and communication difficulties due to delays in speech and language development. The main problem in language acquisition for deaf children is that they have difficulty understanding the meaning of words. The problem is that children can read, but they do not understand what they read. The title of this article is ``The learning media "ARASIK" in understanding the meaning of nouns in SDLB Deaf students at SLB Negeri Bogor" The theoretical foundations used in this study are: (1) understanding the meaning of words, as stated by Nurbeiti Jamalus that the meaning of a word is the relationship between the sound (language) of the word spoken or written with the object concerned; (2) Augmented Realitiy learning media promoted by scientists, that AR can visualize abstract concepts for understanding and the structure of an object model allows AR as a more effective media in accordance with the objectives of learning media. This research uses a descriptive-qualitative approach, with data collection techniques through observation, interviews and documentation studies. The data analysis technique used refers to Miles and Huberman (1994) which includes three activities, namely: (1) data reduction, (2) data presentation, and (3) conclusion drawing from the application of "ARASIK" media. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the "ARASIK" media can help facilitate SDLB Deaf students in understanding the meaning of nouns.

The Impacts of Explicit Strategy Instruction on Reading Performance from Students Perspective: A Case Study

This paper reported on part of a larger study to explore how Vietnamese non-English major students perceived the impacts of explicit strategy instruction (ESI) on reading comprehension. Instruction on reading strategies was conducted for 6 weeks in which students were taught explicitly previewing and predicting, skimming, scanning, guessing the meaning of the unknown words from the context and summarizing strategies. Data were collected from forty-five non-English major students at a university in Vietnam through group interviews and learning reflections. Three semi-structured interviews were conducted in groups of three to four students, and thirty-nine learning reflections were collected to obtain in-depth information about the impact of the ESI. The findings revealed that, after the instruction, the students reported using various reading strategies in four strategy categories, namely problem-solving, global, support and local strategies. In addition, the ESI was perceived to be cognitively beneficial, as students reported heightened awareness of using reading strategies in reading comprehension, expanded reading strategy repertoire, greater reading fluency, and higher reading scores. From a non-cognitive affective perspective, students reported that the ESI motivated them to read with a higher level of confidence and become more autonomous in reading in English. The study offers implications for teachers, students and materials writers in teaching and learning English reading skills in non-English major learning contexts and perhaps in other settings.

Assessment of Children’s Skill in Noticing Unfamiliar Words within Informational Context

ABSTRACT Reading and language standards, such as the Common State Standards for English Language Arts, indicate that primary-grade students should be able to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words from grade-level context. However, to be able to attempt determining the meaning of an unfamiliar word, the word must first be noticed. There is a lack of research on young children developing skill in noticing unfamiliar words, which may be an important skill for their vocabulary development and comprehension. In the present study, theories of word learning, earlier experimenter-created assessments with older learners, and research with multilingual learners guided the development of such an assessment, the Noticing Unfamiliar Words Assessment (NUWA). Instrument development methods, including expert review and piloting, were performed prior to administering the NUWA to a sample of 55 second graders. Results of the exploratory factor analysis supported the hypothesized unidimensional factor structure and indicated that the assessment had an adequate fit and internal consistency reliability. Findings suggest that the NUWA may be helpful in better understanding the developmental nature of skill in noticing unfamiliar words from context while listening and how it contributes to children’s vocabulary knowledge and other literacy skills.

Increasing The Students’ Ability In Reading Comprehension By Using Shared Reading Strategy At The Eighth Grade Of SMP Negeri 3 Gunungsitoli In 2022/2023

Reading was a part of four skills in mastering English that should be taught at school because it an important skill to be mastered. In learning English there were four basic skills that should be mastered by students. They were listening, speaking, reading and writing. Reading had to be mastered by students because it could help students got a lot of information and could increase their knowledge for example by reading; the students were expected to build their own comprehension of the text. Based on the observation that was done by researcher in SMP Negeri 3 Gunungsitoli, especially in the eighth grade, most of the students could not achieve the MCC 70. Problems faced by students in learning reading comprehension: the students lacked of vocabulary, the students were not able to identified the topic of the recount text, the students lacked an understanding of the meaning of words in the text, the students could not know the generic structure of the recount text. The research did aim to address students’ problems in reading comprehension through shared reading strategy. This research used a quantitative method and used Classroom Action Research (CAR) design which consists of planning, action, observation, reflection. This research was carried out two cycles and each cycle was conducted two meetings. In cycle I showed that there were 20 students who did not pass the MCC out of 30 students and the average student score was 51.66. In addition, in Cycle I there were results from student evaluations with the lowest score of 20 and the highest score of 85. In Cycle II, all students had passed the MCC out of 30 students and with an average student score of 85.16 and there was a lowest score of 70 and the highest score of 100. Based on the results of the study, the researcher concluded that the used of shared reading strategy could improve students’ reading comprehension skill.

Words do not just label concepts: activating superordinate categories through labels, lists, and definitions

ABSTRACT We investigate the interface between concepts and word meanings by asking English speakers to list members of superordinate categories under one of three conditions: (1) when cued by a label (e.g. animals), (2) an exemplar list (e.g. dog, cat, mouse), or (3) a definition (e.g. “living creatures that roam the Earth”). We find that categories activated by labels lead to participants listing more category-typical responses, as quantified through typicality ratings, similarity in word embedding space, and accuracy in guessing category labels. This effect is stronger for some categories than others (e.g. stronger for appetizers than animals). These results support the view that a word is not merely a label for a concept, but rather a unique way of accessing and organizing conceptual space.

Inversion and Arabic Language DNA (LDNA) Theory: A Negative Dimensional (D-) Word-from-Word Approach

In this paper, the "Inter-Inversion and Language DNA (LDNA) Theory" is presented. Each Arabic letter has its symmetric letter in a DNA-like combination. The theory is very important in philology, the words' meanings, and development of a new language and/or dialect. It is a negative dimensional (D-) word-from-word approach (given a new term: lexical topology). The Language DNA (LDNA) process can be added, as the eighth process, to the previous list of the basic processes by which new words are created, and consequently, it is the compromising eighth source of the language. The inverted word gives the similar meaning of the original word. Some of the meanings are well-known, whereas the others were either used in the past and lost because of the natural selection law or were never known but might be used in the future. Additionally, it enriches the meaning of the word and may give extended negative dimensional meaning of the interpreted text.

Old Believers in Brazil: Preserving Linguistic Identity

This article presents a study of the history of Russian Old Believers’ emigration to Brazil. As such, it analyses the reasons that allowed them to maintain their linguistic identity, and identifies the features of the dialect of the Russian language of the Old Believers living in Latin America and in Brazil in particular. Old Believers moved to Brazil after centuries of oppression, first leaving Central Russia for the East of the country, Siberia and Primorye, and then, after the 1917 Revolution, many of them moved to Harbin (China). After the 1949 Revolution in China, they turned to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, who sent them to the United States, Canada, Australia and Brazil. Brazil was the first country to grant them visas. The main wave of migration of Old Believers to Brazil took place in 1957–1958, that is, after the policy of nationalization of the New State carried out in 1937–1945 by President Getúlio Vargas, whose goal was to turn all immigrants into Brazilian citizens by banning their native language in both official and everyday communication. Thus, the Old Believers managed to fully preserve their religious, cultural and linguistic identity due to the hermetic nature of their communities and the preservation of their traditional way of life. The dialect of the Old Believers of Brazil retains the typical features of the Nizhny Novgorod dialect of the nineteenth century, in which archaic linguistic features and semantic shifts in the meaning of words were preserved. However, it also contains lexical innovations denoting new concepts of modern life, Spanish and Portuguese borrowings and their adaptation. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, several Old Believer families decided to return to Russia under the State Programme to Assist the Voluntary Resettlement to Russia of Compatriots Living Abroad. Specifically, they returned to Primorye, thus completing their round-the-world trip.

A Study on the Semantics of the Sichuan Dialect Word Ba Based on the Cognitive Perspective

The Sichuan dialect word ba is widely used and has a high frequency of occurrence within the dialect area. It is characterized by its rich semantic meanings and diverse parts of speech, making it one of the most representative common words in Sichuan dialect. However, existing dialect dictionaries have issues such as incomplete definitions, unclear interpretations, and uncertain grammatical properties, which call for further careful revisions. Cognitive linguistics, one of the current research hotspots in linguistics, can fundamentally explain the intrinsic mechanisms and external manifestations of lexical semantic formation. This paper, based on the cognitive perspective and within the macro-framework of Prototype Category Theory, employs the theories of metaphor, metonymy, and image schema to conduct a micro-level analysis and clarification of the original meaning and extended meanings of the Sichuan dialect word ba. It attempts to provide cognitive reasoning for interpreting the meanings of dialect words in dictionaries, as well as to offer new perspectives and cases for exploring the semantics of dialect words.

Decoding Complexity: A Mathematical Framework for Enhanced Translation Comprehension

Machine translation tools have demonstrated substantial progress in enhancing translation accuracy since the emergence of artificial intelligence. However, challenges persist in reasoning (or the lack thereof), considering contexts, addressing specific word games, and interpreting very long or very short sentences—those exceeding 50 and falling below 7 words (Bowker, 2023 : 893). Additionally, accurately translating technical or specialized terms and their variations remains a hurdle. This research introduces a categorical mathematical formalization of the comprehension stages in translation, along with a model for calculating acceptances (specific meanings of words) during the verification of meaning hypotheses. The goal is to elucidate the comprehension process and integrate contextual considerations. The formalism delineates a series of fundamental cognitive operations involved in comprehension. Furthermore, it advocates for evaluating meaning hypotheses using logical modalities, particularly hypostases, described as phrases (groups of words)—a unit of discourse rather than language—signifying the structure of arguments conveying the speaker's knowledge. The strength of our proposed mathematical model lies in its independence from both source and target languages, as well as the subjectivity of text authors or translators. Additionally, the assessment of meaning hypotheses relies on verifiable logical modalities, ensuring a reliable, explicable, and controllable outcome.

Statistical Relationships Between Phonological Form, Emotional Valence and Arousal of Spanish Words.

A number of studies have provided evidence of limited non-arbitrary associations between the phonological forms and meanings of affective words, a finding referred to as affective sound symbolism. Here, we explored whether the affective connotations of Spanish words might have more extensive statistical relationships with phonological/phonetic features, or affective form typicality. After eliminating words with poor affective rating agreement and morphophonological redundancies (e.g., negating prefixes), we found evidence of significant form typicality for emotional valence, emotionality, and arousal in a large sample of monosyllabic and polysyllabic words. These affective form-meaning mappings remained significant even when controlling for a range of lexico-semantic variables. We show that affective variables and their corresponding form typicality measures are able to significantly predict lexical decision performance using a megastudy dataset. Overall, our findings provide new evidence that affective form typicality is a statistical property of the Spanish lexicon.

Social, economic, and demographic factors drive the emergence of Hinglish code-mixing on social media

The advent of globalization and adaptation to multiple cultures has emanated a fusion of Hindi and English, casually known as Hinglish. The phenomenon of mixing multiple languages (such as Hindi and English) within a single utterance is often called code-mixing. Lately, code-mixed Hinglish has emerged as a dominant conversational language for Hindi-speaking citizens both online (on social media platforms) and offline. Although previous studies investigated such linguistic traits of Hinglish over the past few years, some pertinent questions still need to be answered: How did Hinglish evolve? And, what are the factors behind the evolution of Hinglish? Does the fusion of English impact all Hindi words similarly? To this end, we explore the empirical and statistical shreds of evidence behind the rise of Hinglish on social media such as Twitter. We show that adopting Hinglish depends on several socio-economic and demographic factors. We further formulate dynamic models to explore the socio-economic factors driving the growth of Hinglish, derive the future growth of Hinglish in the upcoming years, and estimate the propensity of users to change their linguistic preferences. Our study highlights that the Hinglish population has evolved steadily between 2014 and 2022, with an annualized growth rate of 1.2%, and the usage of Hinglish on Twitter has increased annually by 2%. Further, we find that the impact of Hinglish evolution is not uniform across different word groups and affects the contextual meaning of different words differently. Although our findings are specific to the Indian Hinglish community, our study can be generalized to understand the evolution and dynamics of other code-mixed languages, such as Spanish-English or Chinese-English.

Peer-mediated education and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in preschool inclusive programs: the power of games

ABSTRACT This study investigated how peer-mediated structured game activities changed and improved peer relations in an inclusive preschool classroom for a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A case study was used in which 17 typically developing (TD) children aged 60–71 months, a 66-month-old boy diagnosed with ASD and the preschool teacher participated. Data were collected before and after peer-mediated structured game activities. The peer tutors engaged in structured activities with the child with ASD for six months. Interviews and observations, picture sociometry, researcher’s diary, teacher’s diary, and structured play were used to collect the data. The findings revealed significant differences in participants’ functional skills before and after the peer-mediated structured game activities. It was observed that the TD children and the boy with ASD improved their social, emotional, and language skills. Children played together for longer. Play time increased, the number of participating children increased. Typically developing children cooperated more and assumed more responsibility. The child with ASD tried to produce meaningful words and participation in play activities was observed. In addition, the peer-mediated structured activities positively supported the teacher’s classroom management and classroom climate. In addition, the teacher’s level of practical knowledge improved.

How well are primary and secondary meanings of L2 words acquired?

AbstractMost words in a language have more than one meaning. Yet, few studies have explicitly examined the acquisition of secondary meanings of L2 words and the extent to which polysemy and homonymy affect vocabulary learning. This study explores the effect of polysemy and homonymy on the deliberate acquisition of the form–meaning connections of L2 words. Thirty-six EFL learners (compared with a control group of 30) learned secondary polysemous and homonymous meanings of familiar words and primary meanings of unfamiliar words using flashcards. Knowledge of target words was measured using meaning–recall and meaning–recognition tests immediately after the treatment and again one week later. The findings indicated that learning another meaning for a familiar word was just as difficult as learning the primary meaning of an unfamiliar word, suggesting that the type of meaning (primary, secondary polysemous, or secondary homonymous) might not be an influencing factor in the deliberate acquisition of L2 words.

Establishing a Material Description Table to Optimize Mandarin Proficiency for Indonesian Learners: An Applied Contrastive Analysis Perspective

Abstract. This study aims to elucidate the most contrasting differences between Mandarin and Indonesian language rules. Based on the analysis results, it is hoped that this can serve as a foundation for creating a learning media, namely a descriptive material table. The study reveals that the most contrasting rule lies in the Indonesian language auxiliary number words, which have no more than 30 auxiliary number words, whereas in Mandarin, or known as 量, there are over 200 such words. Additionally, there is a rule for constructing past tense sentences. In Indonesian, a word meaning “finished” is used to indicate the past, contrasting with Mandarin, which employs the particle “了”, which can also have different meanings according to different rules. Furthermore, there is a Numeral system rule where Indonesian simply translates numbers into letters, while Mandarin has specific and detailed rules; this clearly presents a contrasting difference. There is also a rule on reduplication, or in Mandarin termed 重叠, where the quantity of rules between the two languages is almost balanced, yet the functions of usage are vastly contrasting. Lastly, there is the rule of “离合词”, a Mandarin language rule that has no equivalent in Indonesian. The method employed is a mixed-method approach, along with a narrative elaboration model based on quantitative differences in the amount of data between Mandarin and Indonesian languages, which are then expounded upon qualitatively. The data source used is the Confucius Institute (孔子学院) recommended books: 标准教程 Standard Course HSK (Hanyu Shuping Kaoshi / Chinese Proficiency Tes) 1 - 6 下 (Part 2). Data analysis techniques include identification, classification, and presentation of the results of data analysis. The results of the research and presentation show that there is a big gap between Mandarin and Bahasa Indonesia linguistic tools, with each of the rules that bind it. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a learning media to reduce this gap.Keywords: Material description table, Applied Contrastive Analysis, Mandarin, Indonesian Learners.

Genetic association analysis of human median voice pitch identifies a common locus for tonal and non-tonal languages

The genetic influence on human vocal pitch in tonal and non-tonal languages remains largely unknown. In tonal languages, such as Mandarin Chinese, pitch changes differentiate word meanings, whereas in non-tonal languages, such as Icelandic, pitch is used to convey intonation. We addressed this question by searching for genetic associations with interindividual variation in median pitch in a Chinese major depression case-control cohort and compared our results with a genome-wide association study from Iceland. The same genetic variant, rs11046212-T in an intron of the ABCC9 gene, was one of the most strongly associated loci with median pitch in both samples. Our meta-analysis revealed four genome-wide significant hits, including two novel associations. The discovery of genetic variants influencing vocal pitch across both tonal and non-tonal languages suggests the possibility of a common genetic contribution to the human vocal system shared in two distinct populations with languages that differ in tonality (Icelandic and Mandarin).

Many other fields of science are related to semantics, therefore meaning plays a role depending on the use of language as a tool for conveying mental experiences, thoughts and intentions in society. The field of semantics is limited to efforts to pay attention to and study the process of transposition of word meanings in language use. Ullman (1972) argues, if someone thinks about the meaning of a word, they simultaneously think about its reference or vice versa. The relationship between two things, meaning and words, is where meaning is born.

Assessing the Quality of ChatGPT Responses to Dementia Caregivers' Questions: Qualitative Analysis.

Artificial intelligence (AI) such as ChatGPT by OpenAI holds great promise to improve the quality of life of patients with dementia and their caregivers by providing high-quality responses to their questions about typical dementia behaviors. So far, however, evidence on the quality of such ChatGPT responses is limited. A few recent publications have investigated the quality of ChatGPT responses in other health conditions. Our study is the first to assess ChatGPT using real-world questions asked by dementia caregivers themselves. This pilot study examines the potential of ChatGPT-3.5 to provide high-quality information that may enhance dementia care and patient-caregiver education. Our interprofessional team used a formal rating scale (scoring range: 0-5; the higher the score, the better the quality) to evaluate ChatGPT responses to real-world questions posed by dementia caregivers. We selected 60 posts by dementia caregivers from Reddit, a popular social media platform. These posts were verified by 3 interdisciplinary dementia clinicians as representing dementia caregivers' desire for information in the areas of memory loss and confusion, aggression, and driving. Word count for posts in the memory loss and confusion category ranged from 71 to 531 (mean 218; median 188), aggression posts ranged from 58 to 602 words (mean 254; median 200), and driving posts ranged from 93 to 550 words (mean 272; median 276). ChatGPT's response quality scores ranged from 3 to 5. Of the 60 responses, 26 (43%) received 5 points, 21 (35%) received 4 points, and 13 (22%) received 3 points, suggesting high quality. ChatGPT obtained consistently high scores in synthesizing information to provide follow-up recommendations (n=58, 96%), with the lowest scores in the area of comprehensiveness (n=38, 63%). ChatGPT provided high-quality responses to complex questions posted by dementia caregivers, but it did have limitations. ChatGPT was unable to anticipate future problems that a human professional might recognize and address in a clinical encounter. At other times, ChatGPT recommended a strategy that the caregiver had already explicitly tried. This pilot study indicates the potential of AI to provide high-quality information to enhance dementia care and patient-caregiver education in tandem with information provided by licensed health care professionals. Evaluating the quality of responses is necessary to ensure that caregivers can make informed decisions. ChatGPT has the potential to transform health care practice by shaping how caregivers receive health information.
