Phytoremediation Potential of Azolla filiculoides: Uptake and Toxicity of Seven Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) at Environmentally Relevant Water Concentrations.

Environmental contamination of aquatic systems by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) has generated significant health concerns. Remediation of contaminated sites such as the fire-fighting emergency training grounds that use aqueous film-forming foams is a high priority. Phytoremediation may help play a part in removing PFAS from such contaminated waters. We investigated the potential of the water fern Azolla filiculoides, which is used for phytoremediation of a wide range of contaminants, to uptake seven common PFAS (perfluorobutanoic acid [PFBA], perfluorobutane sulfonic acid [PFBS], perfluoroheptanoic acid [PFHpA], perfluorohexanoic acid [PFHxA], perfluorohexane sulfonic acid [PFHxS], perfluorooctanoic acid [PFOA], and perfluoropentanoic acid [PFPeA]), during a 12-day exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations delivered as equimolar mixtures: low (∑PFAS = 0.0123 ± 1.89 μmol L-1), medium (∑PFAS = 0.123 ± 2.88 μmol L-1), and high (∑PFAS = 1.39 μmol L-1) treatments, equivalent to approximately 5, 50, and 500 µg L-1 total PFAS, respectively. The possible phytotoxic effects of PFAS were measured at 3-day intervals using chlorophyll a content, photosystem II efficiency (Fv/Fm), performance index, and specific growth rate. The PFAS concentrations in plant tissue and water were also measured every 3 days using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Treatments with PFAS did not lead to any detectable phytotoxic effects. All seven PFAS were detected in plant tissue, with the greatest uptake occurring during the first 6 days of exposure. After 12 days of exposure, a maximum bioconcentration factor was recorded for PFBA of 1.30 and a minimum of 0.192 for PFBS. Consequently, the application of Azolla spp. as a stand-alone system for phytoremediation of PFAS in aquatic environments is not sufficient to substantially reduce PFAS concentrations. Assessment of Heavy Metal Accumulation in Soil and Garlic Influenced by Waste-Derived Organic Amendments

Simple SummaryThe utilization of organic wastes, for example, poultry waste, sugarcane press mud, and farmyard manure is extremely common among farmers from South Asia including Pakistan. We assess the biochemical nature and dietary benefit for plants and record the presence of heavy metals in garlic following cultivation in a soil amended with these organic wastes. Present investigation showed the grouping of toxicity and bioaccumulation of heavy metals with a particular link to their source of origin and highlight the hazard of some of them for public health through their excessive utilization. Selecting appropriate manure can significantly reduce health risks for humans.In South Asia, the high costs of synthetic fertilizers have imposed research on alternative nutrient inputs. We aimed to identify potential trace elements (PTE) present in some organic manure that might be a source of environmental pollutions and risk to public health following consumption. The study aims to evaluate how different organic waste (poultry waste, PW; press mud, PM; and farmyard manure, FYM) influences the heavy metal migration in soil, the accumulation in garlic, and their potential health risks. Organic waste caused a higher accumulation of certain metals (Zn, Cu, Fe, and Co), whereas Mn, Cd, Cr, and Pb were in lower concentrations in soil. Amendments of soil with PM revealed a higher accumulation of Cd, Cr, Fe, and Pb, whereas PW resulted in Cu and Zn accumulation in garlic. Treatment of soil with FYM exhibited higher metal concentration of Co and Mn. An environmental hazard indices study revealed that pollution load index (PLI) was highest for Cu following treatment with PM. The health risk index (HRI) was greater for Cd following amendment with PM. Maximum daily intake of metals (DIM) was observed for Zn after treatment with PW. The Pb exhibited maximum bioconcentration factor (BCF) in PM-amended plants. Based on these findings, we concluded that garlic grown on contaminated soil with organic waste may pose serious health hazards following consumption.

Biomonitoring and phytoremediation potential of the leaves, bark, and branch bark of street trees for heavy metal pollution in urban areas.

Tree tissues can accumulate heavy metals from the environment. We therefore aimed to evaluate the presence of the metals Pb, Cr, Mn, Cu, and Zn in four street tree species, namely Ailanthus altissima, Broussonetia papyrifera, Pinus tabuliformis, and Rhus typhina, along the highway side of Beijing, China. Sampling from the leaves, trunk bark, and branch annual segment bark of trees was conducted in the summer of 2021, and the concentration of heavy metals was determined. The results revealed the highest average concentration of total heavy metals in the R. typhina leaves (23.724 mg/kg) and barks (14.454 mg/kg). The maximum bio-concentration factor was noted for Zn in the B. papyrifera leaves (0.36) and P. tabuliformis barks (0.21). The maximum comprehensive bio-concentration index was observed for the B. papyrifera leaves (0.225) and P. tabuliformis bark (0.108). The maximum metal accumulation index was measured in the R. typhina leaves (29.682) and bark (12.407). Based on the air-originated metals, P. tabuliformis showed the highest dust collection capacity. In general, B. papyrifera and P. tabuliformis exhibited the highest absorption rate from the soil relative to the other studied species. R. typhina demonstrated the strongest phytoremediation ability for heavy metal pollution in air. In addition, our results proved that the branch annual segment bark of P. tabuliformis is an excellent record carrier that can be used to monitor heavy metal pollution in a specific time duration in an urban area.

Effect of Pb-Contaminated Water on Ludwigia stolonifera (Guill. & Perr.) P.H. Raven Physiology and Phytoremediation Performance.

A laboratory experiment was led to examine the lead bioaccumulation capacity of Ludwigia stolonifera (Guill. & Perr.) exposed to various Pb concentrations (0, 10, 25, 50, and 100 mg/L) for 1, 3, 5, and 7 days. The lead accumulation increased as the metal concentrations in the solution increased and over time, to an extreme accretion of 6840 mg/kg DW(dry weight) at 100 mg/L of lead on the 10 days exposure. The proportion removal efficiency, translocation factor, and bioconcentration factor of the plant were assessed. The maximum bioconcentration factor values (1981.13) indicate that the plant was a Pb hyperaccumulator, and translocation factor values (1.85), which are >1, indicate fit of L. stolonifera for eliminating Pb in Pb-contaminated water. Photosynthetic pigments were decreased with increase of Pb concentration and time exposure. Total chlorophyll content and Chl a/b ratio lowered to between 46 and 62% at 100 mg/L Pb after 10 days exposure. Protein content and soluble carbohydrate indicated a similar trend, which showed the highest decrease (7.26 and 36.2 mg/g FW(fresh weight), respectively) at 100 mg/L of Pb after 10 days. The activity of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase, ascorbate, and peroxidase was increased significantly in comparison to the control. The results indicate that L. stolonifera is a newly recognized Pb hyperaccumulator (6840 mg/kg DW), but physiological status indicates that the plant is not tolerant to high Pb concentrations.

Bioaccumulation of Pyraoxystrobin and Its Predictive Evaluation in Zebrafish.

This paper aims to understand the bioaccumulation of pyraoxystrobin in fish. Using a flow-through bioconcentration method, the bioconcentration factor (BCF) and clearance rate of pyraoxystrobin in zebrafish were measured. The measured BCF values were then compared to those estimated from three commonly used predication models. At the exposure concentrations of 0.1 μg/L and 1.0 μg/L, the maximum BCF values for pyraoxystrobin in fish were 820.8 and 265.9, and the absorption rate constants (K1) were 391.0 d−1 and 153.2 d−1, respectively. The maximum enrichment occurred at 12 d of exposure. At the two test concentrations, the clearance rate constant (K2) in zebrafish was 0.5795 and 0.4721, and the half-life (t1/2) was 3.84 d and 3.33 d, respectively. The measured BCF values were close to those estimated from bioconcentration predication models.

Effect of Cadmium Stress on Phytochelatins in Amaranthus hypochondriacus L. During Different Growth Periods

Phytochelatins (PCs) can chelate heavy metal ions due to their large number of thiols and play an important role in heavy metal accumulation and detoxification. A. hypochondriacus K472, a cadmium (Cd) enriched plant, was selected as the research object. Six Cd treatment concentrations, namely 0 (CK), 10 (T1), 25 (T2), 50 (T3), 100 (T4), and 200 mg ·kg-1 (T5), were used to analyze the variation of PCs in different growth stages under different degrees of Cd stress and to explore the mechanism by which PCs chelate and detoxify Cd. The results showed that the plant height, root length, and biomass of K472 decreased significantly with increasing Cd concentration, and the range of decrease gradually became less pronounced with the growth and development of K472. K472 exhibited the maximum ability to enrich Cd during the middle vegetative growth period. The maximum concentration was 6695.35 mg, and the maximum bioconcentration factor was 6.3. In addition, with increasing Cd concentration, the Cd content of K472 roots, stems, and leaves was positively correlated with the concentration of PCs. PC3 had the strongest response to Cd stress in roots and stems, whereas PC2 responded to stress in leaves. For practical applications, harvesting K472 in the middle of vegetative growth is an optimal strategy for the remediation of Cd-contaminated soil.

Life cycle assessment of heavy metal contaminated sites: phytoremediation and soil excavation

Phytoextraction by native Taiwanese chenopod (Chenopodium formosanum Koidz.) and Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum) for heavy metals such as chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and copper (Cu) was reported first. Maximum bioconcentration factors of Cu and Cr were 8.8 and 12.5 by Taiwanese chenopod. Napier grass cultivar Taishi No.4 plants demonstrated higher survivals than that of Taiwanese chenopod, under heavy metal stress in soils. All heavy metal accumulation and biomass data were employed, as well as historical engineering data were collected for conventional excavation-and-refill remediation of two sites. Life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted for comparing environmental performances of phytoextraction and conventional remediation for two contaminated sites. Assuming one-year growth, three harvests were done and biomass was collected and sent to the nearest municipal incinerators, phytoextraction by both plants demonstrated superior environmental performances than conventional methods for contaminated site remediation. High quantities of fuels to haul the soils of conventional methods mainly contributed to the greenhouse gas emission. Phytoextraction has the most advantages for sites with lesser extents of pollution and time restraints. Environmental performances of phytoremediation were even better if energy recovered from biomass incineration is counted. Novelty statement Phytoextraction by native Taiwanese chenopod and Napier grass was firstly reported. Life cycle assessment was conducted for comparing the phytoextraction and conventional remediation. Phytoextraction demonstrated superior environmental performances. Energy reutilization of biomass recovered made phytoremediation more sustainable.

Assessing the uptake and accumulation of heavy metals and particulate matter from ambient air by some tree species in Isfahan Metropolis, Iran.

The main scope of this study is to evaluate the uptake and accumulation potential of heavy metals in unwashed and washed leaves and particulate matter (PM) in leaf surfaces plus waxes of different tree species in Isfahan city. The highest mean concentrations of Cd, Cr, and Ni in unwashed and washed leaves were detected in M. nigra, Zn and Cu in P. fraxinifolia, and Pb was related to P. orientalis. The highest and lowest mean total depositions of total particulate matter (sum of PM10, PM2.5, and PM0.2) were found in the leaf of M. nigra (190.23 ± 23.5) and S. alba (11.9 ± 4.42 μg/cm2), respectively. The maximum bio-concentration factor (BCF) of Cd, Pb, and Ni was observed in Morus nigra; Cu and Zn in Pterocarya fraxinifolia, with the BCF of Cr found in Acer negundo. Comprehensive bio-concentration index (CBCI) and metal accumulation index (MAI) were applied for comparing different tree species in HMs accumulation from soil and ambient air. The highest CBCI was measured for M. nigra (0.86), so this tree has the potential to remediate metals from the polluted soil. Higher MAI values in washed and unwashed leaves were found in S. alba (6.77 and 6.98) and M. nigra (5.93 and 5.62), demonstrating the high capability of these trees for controlling air born-metal pollution. Based on the AOM factor, M. nigra, P. fraxinifolia, U. umbraculifera, P. fraxinifolia, A. altissima, and M. alba trees had the highest ability to capture Cd, Zn, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Cr from air. So, planting these trees would be beneficial in sensitive and critical zones such as industrial and urban areas with such atmospheric pollutants.

Uranium Rhizofiltration by Lactuca sativa, Brassica campestris L., Raphanus sativus L., Oenanthe javanica under Different Hydroponic Conditions

Rhizofiltration experiments were conducted using uranium-contaminated groundwater and lettuce (Lactuca sativa), Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris L.), radish (Raphanus sativus L.), and buttercup (Oenanthe javanica), which are commonly grown and consumed in South Korea. The results of the rhizofiltration experiments with artificial solutions with different initial uranium concentrations (18, 32, 84, 116, 173, and 263 μg/L) show that the uranium accumulation and bioconcentration factor (BCF) of plant roots increase with increasing uranium concentration in the groundwater. Among the four plants, the uranium concentration in the roots of Raphanus sativus L. is 1215.8 μg/g dry weight, with a maximum BCF value of 2692.7. The BCF value of the artificial solutions with various pH values (pH 3, 5, 7, and 9) is the highest under acidic conditions (pH 3) for all four plants. The uranium BCF values based on different hydroponic conditions range from 170.5 to 11580.3 and the results are comparable with those of other studies using similar methods; the highest BCF value was determined for Brassica campestris L. at pH 3. The BCF values of Raphanus sativus L. after the rhizofiltration experiments with genuine groundwater contaminated with uranium are the highest among the four species; that is, 1684.7 and 1700.1 in Oesam-dong and Bugokdong groundwater samples with uranium concentrations of 83 and 173 μg/L, respectively. The results of the scanning electron microscope/electron dispersive X-ray spectroscope analyses show that uranium in contaminated groundwater is adsorbed as a solid phase on the root surface. These results demonstrate that Raphanus sativus L. has a high tolerance to high concentrations of uranium and low pH conditions and a remarkable potential for uranium accumulation.

Cadmium phytoextraction by Helianthus annuus (sunflower), Brassica napus cv Wichita (rapeseed), and Chyrsopogon zizanioides (vetiver)

The use of phytoextraction plant species to accumulate soil metals into harvestable plant parts is a method used for managing soils with high cadmium (Cd). We evaluated three Cd accumulating species recently recommended for such use in cacao farms where Cd removal is needed to maintain markets: Helianthus annuus (sunflower), Brassica napus (rapeseed), and Chyrsopogon zizanioides (vetiver). Plants were grown in two greenhouse pot experiments with different Cd-spiked growth media: (sand plus perlite) and a natural soil. Plant total Cd and Cd uptake in shoot biomass of all species, across both experiments, increased linearly with increasing amounts of added Cd. Rapeseed had the highest plant total Cd and sunflower had the highest Cd uptake in shoot biomass. The highest application of Cd corresponded to the highest plant total Cd and shoot biomass Cd uptake, regardless of species. The bioconcentration factor (BCF) for each species increased in a curvilinear manner with added Cd, with maximum BCF values for plants grown in the sand and perlite matrix at 2.5 mg kg−1 added Cd and in the natural soil at 5.0 mg kg−1 added Cd. We conclude that the Cd uptake (shoot biomass only) capability of the three species examined is greatest for sunflower given its increased uptake with Cd additions, its BCF value > 1, and lack of observed visual Cd toxicity symptoms, fungus and insect damage. Although these species had BCF >1, the potential annual removal of Cd would have been too small to support a meaningful phytoextraction practice.

Heavy metal fractions in rhizosphere sediment vis-à-vis accumulation in Phoenix paludosa (Roxb.) mangrove plants at Dhamra Estuary of India: assessing phytoremediation potential

ABSTRACT Total and sequentially extracted fractions (exchangeable, bound to carbonate, bound to iron and manganese oxides, bound to organic matter and residual) of eight heavy metals (Cu, Mn, Zn, Ni, Fe, Cr, Cd and Pb) were estimated in rhizosphere sediment along with their accumulation in roots and leaves of Phoenix paludosa plants at Dhamra estuary. The Cu, Mn, Zn, Ni, Fe, Cr, Cd and Pb content in rhizosphere sediments were 162.2, 563.3, 289.1, 228.8, 31,524.3, 475.5, 8.5 and 256.8 mg/kg, respectively. For almost all the heavy metals, sequential extraction estimation showed residual>bound to iron and manganese>bound to organic matter>bound to carbonate>exchangeable fractions. Exceptionally very high residual Cr (77.36%) and organic matter-bound Cd fraction (41.10%) highlighted the sedimentary mine run-off and industrial activities as their main source of pollution, respectively. Phoenix paludosa exhibited maximum bio-concentration (0.34), bio-accumulation (0.51) and translocation (0.50) factor for Cd. The primary results revealed the phyto-accumulation behaviour of different heavy metals in Phoenix paludosa and showed its relatively higher remediation potential for Cd and Cr pollution. In view of the above facts, heavy metals-polluted estuarine sites can be remediated through afforestation of Phoenix paludosa plant species.

Accumulation of Cobalt in Soils and Forages Irrigated with City Effluent

DESPITE of its nutrient content, sewage water includes different contaminants responsible for the pollution of soil and plants. In this study, an experiment was conducted at the University of Sargodha to evaluate the danger of the presence of cobalt in forages irrigated with city effluent. Moreover, the health risks associated with livestock feed on these contaminated forages were evaluated. Cobalt accumulation in different parts of plants was analysed by atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AA-6300 Shimadzu Japan). Some critical indices like pollution load index, bioconcentration factor and health risk index were also determined. The observed cobalt values in water samples used for irrigation were 0.164 mg/L in tap water and 0.191mg/L in sewage water. The highest cobalt concentration was observed in the root of the winter forage Trifolium alexandrinum (1.560mg/kg) irrigated with sewage water, while the minimum concentration was recorded in Sorghum bicolor, a summer forage irrigated with tap water (0.085mg/kg). The maximum bioconcentration factor value for cobalt was 7.7 in the winter crop of T. resupinatum. The maximum pollution load index, daily intake and health risk index values for cobalt were 0.8910,0.026 and 0.6104, respectively. All of these maximum values were determined for the samples irrigated with sewage water. In summary, the cobalt contents in soil and plant samples significantly increased when the samples were irrigated with sewage water as compared to tap water.

Exploring the phytoremediation potential of water hyacinth by FTIR Spectroscopy and ICP-OES for treatment of heavy metal contaminated water

Toxic heavy metal pollution of water is a major environmental problem and the current remediation approaches are not optimal as they are non-eco-friendly and lacking in efficiency. As such phytoremediation, a green remediation technology is recognized as a better approach. In this study, both Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy and Inductive Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) were used to investigate the capability of an aquatic plant, water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) to remove heavy metals of lead, copper, cadmium and arsenic from aqueous solution at concentrations of 2 mg/L and 8 mg/L. Overall, the results showed that the uptake was rapid with the plants removing >80% of all the heavy metals at both concentrations. This uptake was proven by the detection of metal accumulation in plant tissues. Roots proved to be better accumulator than leaves. Maximum bioconcentration factor values indicating that the plant is a hyperaccumulator for lead and a moderate accumulator for the other heavy metals. Ligands such as O–H, C–O, C–C and C–H were found to aid the plant in accumulating heavy metal in its tissues. This study concludes that water hyacinth can be utilized as a phytoremediation agent to clean up heavy metal polluted water.

Production of selenium- and zinc-enriched Lemna and Azolla as potential micronutrient-enriched bioproducts

Selenium (Se) and zinc (Zn) are essential micronutrients that are often lacking in the diet of humans and animals, leading to deficiency diseases. Lemna and Azolla are two aquatic plants with a substantial protein content, which offer the possibility of utilizing them to remove Se and Zn from (waste)water while producing micronutrient-enriched dietary proteins and fertilizers. In this study, we explored interaction effects occurring between Se and Zn when these micronutrients are taken up by Azolla and Lemna. The two aquatic plants were grown on hydroponic cultures containing 0–5.0 mg/L of Se (Se(IV) or Se(VI)) and Zn. The Se and Zn content of the plants, growth indicators, bioconcentration factor (BCF) and Se/Zn removal efficiency from the water phase were evaluated. The results demonstrated that Se(IV) is more toxic than Se(VI) for both plant species, as evidenced by the remarkable decrease of biomass content and root length when exposed to Se(IV). Both aquatic plants took up around 10 times more Se(IV) than Se(VI) from the medium. Moreover, the Se accumulation and removal efficiency increased by 66–99% for Se(IV) and by 34–59% for Se(VI) in Lemna when increasing Zn dosage from 0 to 5.0 mg/L in the medium, whereas it declined by 13–26% for Se(IV) and 21–35% for Se(VI) in Azolla, suggesting a synergetic effect in Lemna, but an antagonistic effect in Azolla. The maximum BCF of Se in Lemna and Azolla were 507 and 667, respectively. The protein content in freeze-dried Lemna and Azolla was approximately 17%. The high tolerance and accumulation of Se and Zn in Lemna and Azolla, combined with their rapid growth, high protein content and transformation of inorganic to organic Se species upon Se(IV) exposure make Lemna and Azolla potential candidates for the production of Se(IV)- and Zn-enriched biomass that can be used as crop fertilizers or protein-rich food/feed supplements or ingredients. Accordingly, by growing the Azolla and Lemna on wastewater, a high-value product can be produced from wastewater while recovering resources.

Cadmium accumulation, availability, and rice uptake in soils receiving long-term applications of chemical fertilizers and crop straw return.

Fertilization and straw return have been widely adopted to maintain soil fertility and increase crop yields, but their long-term impacts on the accumulation and availability of cadmium (Cd) in paddy soils are still unconfirmed. Therefore, this study was undertaken in central China to investigate the accumulation, availability, and subsequent uptake of Cd by rice (Oryza sativa L.) in two adjacent field trials (P1 and P2, lasting for 10 and 12years, respectively) under long-term straw return or in combination with chemical fertilizers. Obvious Cd accumulation, probably due to the notable Cd input from irrigation and traffic exhaust in the bulk soil (0-20cm) of P1, was observed. The bulk soil of P2 received homogeneous straw return and chemical fertilizers, as did that of P1; however, the P2 soil almost showed Cd balance. Long-term straw return increased the portion of soil DTPA-extractable Cd to the total pool for both sites, but only P1 showed significant differences when compared to the controls. However, the highest Cd concentrations and the maximum bioconcentration factors in rice straw and grain were obtained using solo application of chemical fertilizers at both sites. Continuous additional applications of crop straw, in contrast, resulted in slightly decreased Cd uptake in rice straw, but not in grain. These findings demonstrate that neither long-term straw return nor fertilization leads directly to notable Cd accumulation, but that the promotion effects of long-term chemical fertilizer applications on Cd uptake in rice need more attention.

Health risk assessment through determining bioaccumulation of iron in forages grown in soil irrigated with city effluent.

The irrigation with sewage water can be useful if it has no negative effects on food crop yield, soil pollution, and health of humans. However, it includes various types of contaminants like heavy metals that pollute the soil and crops. In this regard, the aim of this study was to evaluate the possible health risks of heavy metals in forages. Forages both of summer and winter were grown with different water treatments (sewage water and tap water) in Department of Botany, University of Sargodha. The concentration of iron (Fe) in water, soil, and plant samples was determined. The Fe values in tap and sewage water were observed as 0.090 and 0.115mg/L, respectively. The highest mean concentration of Fe was 9.608mg/kg in the soil where Trifolium alexandrinum is grown, and the lowest mean concentration was 0.154mg/kg which occurred in the soil where Trifolium resupinatum is grown in winter. The maximum mean concentration of Fe in the root samples of plants was observed as 2.483mg/kg in Pennisetum typhoideum, and the minimum mean concentration occurred as 0.390mg/kg in Zea mays grown in summer. The maximum bioconcentration factor value of Fe was observed for T. resupinatum (5.259) grown in winter. The maximum pollution load index value of Fe was observed for T. alexandrinum (0.1688). The maximum value of daily intake of metals was observed as 0.0731 in Medicago sativa, and the maximum health risk index value was determined as 0.1091 in P. typhoideum.

Spatial distribution of heavy metals in crops in a wastewater irrigated zone and health risk assessment

Industrialization and urbanization have produced a large amount of wastewater. Part of the municipal wastewater has been used as an irrigation source in urban/suburban areas. Its utilization, although economically beneficial, can significantly deteriorate the integrity of the ecological systems (e.g., in terms of quality of soil and resulting food products). The objectives of this study are to investigate the spatial distribution and bio-accumulation of heavy metals (e.g., Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in food crops (and topsoil) and associated health risks of their consumption in the area of Mangla Dam, Pakistan. To this end, studies were conducted to assess the risk factors such as the bioconcentration factor (BCF), health risk index (HRI), and daily intake of heavy metals (DIM). Accordingly, there was more contamination in Mangla Dam water irrigated zone (DWI) than in the groundwater irrigated zone (GWI). Co exhibited the maximum BCF of 7.45 for Eruca sativa and 6.61 for Brassica campestris in the GWI zone. Likewise, enhanced risk to human health was seen from of Cd, Cr, and Pb in Triticum aestivum and Eruca sativa grown in the DWI zone. It is recommended that the quality profile of wastewater discharge into freshwater ecosystems should be continuously monitored and regulated.

High-potential accumulation and tolerance in the submerged hydrophyte Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle for nickel-contaminated water

Water contamination by nickel (Ni) has become an increasing concern in recent decades. Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle has been recognized as a promising accumulator of several potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in phytoremediation, but its Ni-accumulation characteristics and its mechanisms of tolerance to Ni remain largely unknown. This research investigated the biochemical responses of leaves and stems of H. verticillata to various concentrations of Ni (5, 10, 15, 20, and 40 μM) over periods of 7, 14, or 21 days. Plants accumulated considerable Ni to a maximum amount of 1080 mg kg-1 dry weight (DW) with a maximum bioconcentration factor of 1100; thus, high Ni accumulation was detected in H. verticillata. Low concentrations (5–15 μM) or short durations (less than 14 days) of Ni exposure might promote plant growth without adversely affecting normal metabolism. After peaking at day 14, a decline in bioaccumulation was unexpectedly observed as a long-term effect of Ni toxicity. Malondialdehyde content and the activities of defense-related enzymes changed in a similar pattern after treatment with Ni, increasing with both Ni concentration and exposure time to a peak (often at 5–15 μM on day 14), followed by a decline. Through a comprehensive analysis of all the test parameters, the tolerance thresholds were determined to be > 40.0 μM, 24.0 μM, and 15.8 μM at days 7, 14, and 21, respectively. Hydrilla verticillata could be a “high-potential accumulator” capable of decontaminating aquatic bodies polluted by Ni within the threshold range.

Potential of trees leaf/ bark to control atmospheric metals in a gas and petrochemical zone

Leaf and bark of trees are tools for assessing the effects of the heavy metals pollution and monitoring the environmental air quality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of Ni, Pb, V, and Co metals in four tree/shrub species (Conocarpus erectus, Nerium oleander, Bougainvillea spectabilis willd, and Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) in the heavily industrial zone of Asaloyeh, Iran. Two industrial zones (sites 1 and 2), two urban areas (sites 3 and 4), and two rural areas (sites 5 and 6) in the Asaloyeh industrial zone and an uncontaminated area as a control were selected. Sampling from leaf and bark of trees was carried out in spring 2016. The metals content in the washed and unwashed leaf and bark was investigated. The results showed that four studied metals in N. oleander, C. erectus, and B. spectabilis willd in all case sites were significantly higher than that of in the control site (p < 0.05). The highest concentration of metals was found in sites 3, 4, and 6; this was due to dispersion of the pollutants from industrial environments by dominant winds. The highest comprehensive bio-concentration index (CBCI) was found in leaf (0.37) and bark (0.12) of N. oleander. The maximum metal accumulation index (MAI) in the samples was found in leaf of N. oleander (1.58) and in bark of H. rosa-sinensis (1.95). The maximum bio-concentration factor (BCF) was seen for cobalt metal in the N. oleander leaf (0.89). The nickel concentration in washed-leaf samples of C. erectus was measured to be 49.64% of unwashed one. In general, the N. oleander and C. erectus species were found to have the highest absorption rate from the atmosphere and soil than other studied species, and are very suitable tools for managing air pollution in highly industrialized areas.

Effects of dissolved organic matter, feeding, and water flow on the bioconcentration of diclofenac in crucian carp (Carassius auratus).

Diclofenac (DCF), a prevalent anti-inflammatory drug, is frequently detected in aquatic organisms. However, little is known about the environmental factors that affect the bioconcentration of DCF in aquatic environments. Here, we firstly investigated the bioconcentration of DCF by crucian carp (Carassius auratus) following aqueous exposure (3.57, 14.5, and 71.8μgL-1) for 21days. DCF can accumulate in crucian carp, and the maximum bioconcentration factors (BCFs) of 121Lkg-1 in the liver, 52.3Lkg-1 in the gills, and 46.8Lkg-1 in the muscle were always found at 3.57μgL-1 after 14days of exposure. Secondly, the influences of dissolved organic matter (DOM), feeding, and water flow on the bioconcentration of DCF were determined at the nominal concentration of 4μgL-1 for 14days. The BCFs of DCF in various fish tissues decreased by 0.5-85% with the increasing DOM concentrations. Feeding also led to lower body burden of DCF in fish tissues (6-55%) with the increasing food amount. In hydrodynamic experiment, the BCFs of DCF decreased by15-57% at most in various fish tissues. Collectively, our results demonstrated the bioconcentration of DCF in fish can be influenced by various environmental factors, which should be considered in the risk assessment of pharmaceuticals.
