The Analysis of Structure and Function of Engineering Culture System

As a creation phenomenon and social phenomenon, engineering has been always closely linked with culture and modern engineering activities even more present the development trend of creating material civilization. Generalized engineering culture refers to the sum of spiritual wealth, pattern of activity and its materialized form which gradually generated and developed, reflects their own characteristics, identity and shared by all members of the organization in the process of long-term engineering practice. Based on the analysis of engineering culture concept, the article applies structure - function analysis method to analyze five layers’ structure and its constituent elements of the engineering culture system from the perspective of system theory. The outermost layer is the environment of engineering culture, and the four gradual levels from the surface to the centre are material layer,behavior layer, system layer and spirit layer. so the hierarchy model was constructed; At the same time the article discusses the five functions of engineering culture system, including the guide leading function, support regulating function, gauge constraint function, incentive condensed function and radiation transmission function.

Globalization is a process of Westernization and Western hegemony from the world’s great powers. Therefore, we can say, it is necessary that any traditional culture will generate a very deep influence on the development of art and technology, and directly or indirectly influence on our lives through them.BR This paper firstly through theoretical property research of the tangram, deeply into the design example of the existing famous stylist`s application of tangram as the basis. Then it draws forth the content that the tangram is applied to the mobile phone interface, through the analysis of various mobile phone interfaces and draws and summarizes a conclusion, using the morphological characteristics and game characteristics of the tangram to carry out mobile phone interface design. It combines the traditional culture with the national character, regionalism, sociality and historic nature and the modern design, finally completes the scheme.

Best molecular multiple quantum bit for the diatomic molecular quantum computer using potassium nitride and calcium nitride through vibrational progression

In this article, based on the former accurate and precise ab initio calculation results for potassium nitride (KN) and calcium nitride (CaN), I revisit the possibilities and potentials of KN and CaN as the best candidate for molecular multiple quantum bit (MMQB) for the diatomic molecular quantum computer (DMQC), and would like to propose the two molecules as CPUs of the DMQC. Lowest lying four electronic states of CaN are energetically located within 1800 cm−1. These four states form the good molecular electronic two quantum bits through the dipole and weak spin–orbit interactions. 3Π state of KN is calculated to lie above ground 3Σ− state by 177 cm−1. KN is a promising candidate for an electronic one quantum bit. When vibrational progression is considered to be accompanied by the electronic transition, CaN and KN are good candidates for larger MMQBs up to a thousand even in the single molecule because the concrete quantum state bearing the quantum bit is each molecular ro-vibronic state, that is, the specific rotational state on each vibronic level. When CaN and KN work in assemblies as quantum bit, those assemblies become larger MMQBs, the number of which might reach the Avogadro number because the molecular spectra appearing in the molecular spectroscopy are the results from the observation by the photon-exchange among intramolecular quantum states made up of 1015 to the Avogadro (6.02 × 1023 mol−1) number of molecules interacting with radiation. Even without the vibrational progression, in the case of the lowest two quantum bit of KN, which is a stable vibronic two quantum bit, a thousand of KN molecules provide a thousand of MMQBs. That is the same situation as that for CaN. Using KN and CaN as MMQBs (playing the triple roles of CPU, RAMs (memory), and storages) ultra-fast “in core” quantum computation can be done. An application of the full-CI quantum chemistry calculation results for the demonstration of the DMQC is discussed. I strongly hope that the MMQB will “oscillate” and that the DMQC will be realized in the near future for the welfare of human being and the further development of modern material civilization. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Joyce à la Braudel: The Long-Temporality of Ulysses

Abstract Although James Joyce’s Ulysses (1922) covers only eighteen hours of a single day, the characters’ reflections and the symbolic networks of the text stretch the temporal reach of Ulysses to incredibly remote events of personal, historical, and mythical pasts. This essay focuses on a peculiar temporal dynamic in the text: by self-consciously basing itself upon the inconspicuous routine occurrences of everyday life rather than upon plot-making ‘events,’ the book hypostasizes what the Annales School of historians considers a long-temporal historical process into diurnal images. This temporal analysis of Joyce’s text draws upon Fernand Braudel, for whom history operates at multiple levels and is subject to various temporalities. Braudel’s interest lies in the imperceptibly slow-moving geographical time (longe durée), which characterizes the deep-lying “structures” of day-to-day life. Under such a micro-historical exegetical paradigm, the everyday objects and material practices of Ulysses, simultaneously synchronic and diachronic in signification, become the residual fragments of an evolving material civilization. Here Joyce’s modernist practice with regard to time provides an alibi for creating parallel narratives and histories. The long-temporality implied in the everyday furnishes Joyce with a perspectival basis on which history and its politics can be reconceived. It enables Joyce to present the claims, priorities, and challenges of the everyday lives of ordinary people, the real makers of a lasting history, as an experiential contrast to the ruptures and discontinuities of a nightmarish ‘grand history.’

The culture included in Hakka traditional ware with theoretical and practical value for application was generalized on the basis of analyzing the traditional Hakka culture. The breakthrough point between traditional quintessential culture and modern design was explored from the angle of design. Varieties of Hakka shaping elements with vivid characteristics were found through Hakka traditional design elements, and incorporated into modern design to be a means to serve regional culture and economy. Meanwhile, we further analyzed the traditional conception of making wares for Hakka, and clarified its beneficial influence on developing spiritual and material civilization of Hakka. The development of modern product design and the association between the design elements of traditional Hakka wares and conception of making wares were pointed out to be not only the case of individual designers, but also involved the cooperation between designers and the masses. The Hakka traditional culture of ware design has important influence on promoting modern product design. To protect excellent traditional culture, propagandize and develop national characteristic culture, idiographic design activities must be done.

Also the religious leaderships are generally bias and financial circles are often selfish and more or less corrupt. Consequently, it remains up to science being universal and to the international scientific community to exert its influence on decision makers and to raise international public awareness of human unity. This is not an easy task and the course to achieve it requires concerted efforts and clear vision of the imminent dangers and challenges ahead of all of us [2]. Currently, scientists have the means to create a culture based on mutual understanding and with no feeling of inferiority, fear or discrimination. They can spread concepts of human unity and freedom of belief and expression through scientific institutions, journals, meetings and the internet’s. Above all, they possess the best brains and they can come up with innovative solutions that could upgrade existing political systems [3]. Scientists should attach great significance to ethical and environmental aspects of their scientific achievements as well as their impacts on national and international scales. In my view scientists have moral obligations and responsibilities which they could be accountable for.

Retrofitting and Moving Protection for Historical Buildings in Jinan City

Retrofitting and moving protection for historical buildings have vital historical and cultural value for they concern both the development of human society material civilization and the continuation of human cultural heritage. Jinan City is ranked among the second group historic and cultural cities of China, where has many valuable historical buildings. The urban construction advances by leaps and bounds in Jinan City since the nineties, which brings tremendous challenge for the protection of historical buildings. The state of the art of protection and retrofitting for the historical buildings in Jinan City is summarized. Three protection schemes, namely in situ retrofitting and minimum distance moving protection as well as long distance moving protection, are adopted in Jinan City. Six finished protective projects are discussed from a structure viewpoint. Retrofitting and monolithic moving techniques are presented for different historical buildings according to the style and features as well as requirements, and also the pivotal techniques for improving aseismatic performance are suggested. Some retrofitting details as to members are also introduced. This will be helpful for the protection of historical buildings.

Religion and Globalisation: Sub-Saharan Islam to Conquer New Territories

ABSTRACT No analyst today would ever dream of denying the fact that religious flows are in line with globalisation. As such, sub-Saharan Africa is not unaffected by globalisation, even if its share in international trade is minute. Different mechanisms are indeed working towards its insertion in the international system, including and perhaps especially the transnational religious networks that, due to their proselytism and mobilisation capacity, dominate as one of the privileged vectors of that insertion. This phenomenon has been the subject of in-depth studies on the Catholic and Protestant churches; however, this is not the case concerning Islam, even though the globalisation of Islam accompanied its expansion throughout the twentieth century in Africa and the Umma and is, by definition, supranational. The transnationalisation of sub-Saharan African Islam in fact follows several paths and combines individual and collective strategies; it does not deal only with institutions, politico-commercial or ‘material civilisation’ networks, but also with culture and symbols, where globalisation is also constructed and deconstructed in the imagination.
