Two approaches to the study of mass media

In this essay two sociological perspectives are used to examine aspects of the mass media. One is derived from Marx's theory of capitalism and the forces and relations of production that determine its structure and development. According to this perspective, the mass media are part of a capitalist society and the content of the media is analysed in terms of class interest and class conflict. The second perspective is derived from Tocqueville's theory of democratic society. In Democracy in America Tocqueville uses two ideal types—of aristocratic and democratic society—to analyse American society and to compare it with European society.

A Study of Mass-Media Attitudes Toward Certain Aspects of The Welfare of Teachers in 1931, 1941, 1951

THIS IS THE second of three papers dealing with the attitude of high circulation American newspapers and magazines toward certain aspects of the material welfare of teachers, as demonstrated in the news and editorials printed in such publications in 1931, 1941, and 19 51. The first paper depicted mass-media attitude toward teachers' salaries and teachers' salary schedules; the final paper will be a similar study of mass-media's willingness to recognize the contributions and value of teachers. The findings printed herein deal with the news and editorial material which such high-circulation publications printed concerning retirement provisions, workload, tenure, added duties, vacations or s a bbatical leaves, age of retirement, sick leave, and hospitalization provisions for American public school teachers in 1931, 1941, and 1951.
