Calcium-related genes associated with intracellular calcification of Emiliania huxleyi (Haptophyta) CCMP 371

Antioxidant and Ace Inhibitor Potential of Stripe Trevally Fish (Selaroides leptolepis) Hydrolysate

This study aimed to investigate the potency of fish protein hydrolysates (FPH) of stripe trevally fish (Selaroides leptolepis) as antioxidant and ACE inhibitor. The FPH was produced through enzymatically hydrolysis using protease produced by Bacillus licheniformis, a collection of Research and Development Center for Marine and Fisheries Product Processing and Biotechnology (RDCMFPPB). The FPH was fractionated using ultrafiltration membranes with molecular weight cut off (MWCO) of 10, 5 and 3 kDa. The hydrolysis degree, protein content, peptide content, antioxidant activity and Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor were observed. The result showed that FPH had maximum hydrolysis degree of 63.91% reached after 6 hours hydrolysis with protein content of 27.43 mg/mL and peptide content of 223.32 mg/mL. That FPH showed antioxidant activity (IC50) of 1941.06 ppm and ACE inhibitor of 87.82% at test concentration of 10 mg/mL. In the ultrafiltration step, the higher molecular cut off used, the higher protein content and peptide content. The lower molecular weight of the hydrolysate, the better antioxidant and ACE inhibitor activity. The best fractionation that produce potential product to be used as anti-hypertension was in mixture peptides between 3-5 kDa. The IC50 antioxidant activity was 1336.96 ppm and percentage of ACE inhibitor was 97.15% % (with a concentration of 10 mg/mL). From the results, protein hydrolysate of stripe trevally fish produced by enzymatic hydrolysis using local protease was potential as a functional ingredient, particularly as antihypertensive agent.

A call for a blue degrowth: Unravelling the European Union's fisheries and maritime policies

Terms like blue growth (as well as the blue economy) have become the new buzzword inscribing a new era where the seas are recognized as potential drivers for the European economy. It is nevertheless, through this same logic of limitless economic growth, marine resources have been unsustainably exploited despite numerous institutional attempts to tackle overfishing. The aim of this paper is to point at the contradictions inherent in the objectives of the blue economy, and question the belief that ecological, social and economic targets can be achieved under (blue) growth-centred policies. An analysis of the (failing) policies for a ‘sustainable use of marine resources’ will be conducted and exemplified through an analysis of the main tools the EU has promoted as solutions to the fisheries crisis (sustainable consumption, privatisation of fish, fishing in waters of third countries and marine aquaculture). Additionally, the sectors promoted by the EU's Blue Growth strategy (marine aquaculture, coastal tourism, marine biotechnology, ocean energy and seabed mining) will also be evaluated in order to question this new vision for the seas and the coast. Through the introduction of the concept blue degrowth, this article aims to open up a more critical discussion around the blue growth strategy by highlighting the inherent dangers which lie in such economic strategies.

BIOREMEDIATION STUDY: HYDROCARBON DEGRADING BACTERIA

Many microorganisms capable of degrading petroleum components have been isolated and few of them seem to be important for petroleum biodegradation in natural environments. To identify the bacteria that play a major role in degradation of petroleum polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), bacteria were enriched from seawater by using Naphthalene, Phenanthrene, Trichlorodibenzofuran and Benzo[a]pyrene as a carbon and energy source. The result of study that members of the genus Alcanivorax and Thalassospira became predominant in the enrichment cultures. The strains isolated in this study could grow on crude oil and degraded PAH components of crude oil. The number of cells increased to 8.1x106 cells g-1 after 14 days in subculture. PAH degradation proceeded parallel with the growth of bacteria cells. This observation which has been conducted in Marine Biotechnology Institute, Kamaishi, Iwate-ken, Japan suggests that Alcanivorax and Thalassospira play an important role in the degradation of petroleum PAHs in marine environment.

Marine and Freshwater Feedstocks as a Precursor for Nitrogen-Containing Carbons: A Review.

Marine-derived as well as freshwater feedstock offers important benefits, such as abundance, morphological and structural variety, and the presence of multiple elements, including nitrogen and carbon. Therefore, these renewal resources may be useful for obtaining N- and C-containing materials that can be manufactured by various methods, such as pyrolysis and hydrothermal processes supported by means of chemical and physical activators. However, every synthesis concept relies on an efficient transfer of nitrogen and carbon from marine/freshwater feedstock to the final product. This paper reviews the advantages of marine feedstock over synthetic and natural but non-marine resources as precursors for the manufacturing of N-doped activated carbons. The manufacturing procedure influences some crucial properties of nitrogen-doped carbon materials, such as pore structure and the chemical composition of the surface. An extensive review is given on the relationship between carbon materials manufacturing from marine feedstock and the elemental content of nitrogen, together with a description of the chemical bonding of nitrogen atoms at the surface. N-doped carbons may serve as effective adsorbents for the removal of pollutants from the gas or liquid phase. Non-recognized areas of adsorption-based applications for nitrogen-doped carbons are presented, too. The paper proves that nitrogen-doped carbon materials belong to most of the prospective electrode materials for electrochemical energy conversion and storage technologies such as fuel cells, air–metal batteries, and supercapacitors, as well as for bioimaging. The reviewed material belongs to the widely understood field of marine biotechnology in relation to marine natural products.

Evaluating the sustainability of marine industrial parks based on the DPSIR framework

Abstract In response to the intense development of the marine industry around the world, marine industrial parks are increasingly being established in coastal areas. To more effectively ensure the sustainable development of these industrial parks, an indicator system must be constructed to evaluate their sustainability. Therefore, a sustainability indicator system based on the driver-pressure-state-impact-response (DPSIR) framework was developed in this study and used to evaluate the sustainability of Shishi Marine Biotechnology Park, Fujian Province, China, between 2013 and 2016. Both the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and the entropy method were used to calculate the weights of the indices, and the indicator variables and evaluation models were uniformly transformed to obtain normalized sustainability scores. During the initial development of Shishi Marine Biotechnology Park, excessive exploitation caused serious environmental problems that hindered sustainable development, and the park reached its lowest pressure index score (3.097) in 2015. After park managers, governments, and enterprises implemented some sustainability measures, which are heavily weighted in the calculation of the five indices in this indicator system, the comprehensive sustainability score for this park increased significantly, reaching its highest value of 6.173 in 2016.

Beach to Bench to Bedside: Marine Invertebrate Biochemical Adaptations and Their Applications in Biotechnology and Biomedicine.

The ocean covers more than 70% of the surface of the planet and harbors very diverse ecosystems ranging from tropical coral reefs to the deepest ocean trenches, with some of the most extreme conditions of pressure, temperature, and light. Organisms living in these environments have been subjected to strong selective pressures through millions of years of evolution, resulting in a plethora of remarkable adaptations that serve a variety of vital functions. Some of these adaptations, including venomous secretions and light-emitting compounds or ink, represent biochemical innovations in which marine invertebrates have developed novel and unique bioactive compounds with enormous potential for basic and applied research. Marine biotechnology, defined as the application of science and technology to marine organisms for the production of knowledge, goods, and services, can harness the enormous possibilities of these unique bioactive compounds acting as a bridge between biological knowledge and applications. This chapter highlights some of the most exceptional biochemical adaptions found specifically in marine invertebrates and describes the biotechnological and biomedical applications derived from them to improve the quality of human life.

Cyanobacteria, known as blue-green algae, are recognized to produce many secondary metabolites including toxins, with applications to the pharmaceutical industry. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of extracts from cyanobacteria to reduce lipid accumulation in a model of hepatic steatosis, and the increase of glucose uptake after starving conditions using HepG2 cells in vitro. Material and methods: HepG2 cells were treated with oleic acid (OA) to induce lipid accumulation and co-exposed to cyanobacterial extracts. Lipid levels were quantified by Nile red in a fluorescence plate reader. Subsequently, sulforhodamine B (SRB) assay was performed to analyze viability. For glucose uptake, cells were starved in Hank’s Balanced Salt Solution and then exposed to cyanobacterial extracts. Glucose uptake was quantified by 2-NBDG. Subsequently, MTT assay was performed to measure the cytotoxicity. Extraction and production of fractions of cyanobacterial biomass was performed with hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol, either in a polarity gradient extraction or in a sequential extraction. Results and conclusions: Two assays were optimized in HepG2 cells, one to quantify the reduction of lipid accumulation and other one to quantify the increase of glucose uptake. Model compounds reduced the lipid level and increased the glucose uptake, as shown in the literature. Extracts from cyanobacteria strains were tested and positive bioactivities were obtained in some fractions from different cyanobacterial strains. In the ongoing work, we intend to isolate novel bioactive compounds and to elucidate their structures. Key Laboratory of Cultivation and High-value Utilization of Marine Organisms in Fujian Province, Fisheries Research Institute of Fujian, Xiamen 361013, China Fund Project: 摘要 | 图/表 | 访问统计 | 参考文献 | 相似文献 | 引证文献 | 资源附件 | 文章评论 摘要:本研究以07-2品系龙须菜（）为实验材料，提取自然条件下代表不同病变程度的健康、病间、白化藻体的附生菌DNA，经PCR扩增16S rDNA基因的V3可变区并进行变性梯度凝胶电泳（DGGE），分离V3片段，再对目的条带进行克隆鉴定。实验结果经数据化后计算龙须菜附生菌数目并比较附生菌菌群多样性，通过非度量多维尺度分析（nMDS）及多元梯度分析（RDA）来比较附生菌菌群组成相似性及优势菌群。实验结果表明，随着龙须菜病变程度的加深，附生菌菌落数及菌群多样性逐渐增加（<0.05）。nMDS分析结果表明，健康藻体与白化藻体在附生菌菌群组成上存在差异，病间藻体在附生菌菌群组成上与健康藻体更为接近。RDA分析结果表明，龙须菜健康藻体附生菌可能的优势菌群是海洋单胞菌属（）、红杆菌科（Rhodobacteraceae）、假交替单胞菌属（、红杆菌科、玫瑰变色菌属（）。从上述结果可以看出，龙须菜健康藻体与发病藻体在附生菌菌群组成及优势菌上存在较大差异，而介于两者之间的藻体在菌群组成上更偏向于健康藻体。 Abstract:, one of the important sources of agar, is the third most widely cultivated seaweed in China, after . In recent years, there has been a large-scale decrease in the cultivation of , resulting in huge economic losses for the seaweed cultivation industry. Epiphytes grow as an integral part on the surfaces of large algae, and the variations in the seaweed-associated microbial community compositions are typically associated with disease occurrence. In this study, the 07-2 strain was used as experimental material. DNA of epiphytes from the healthy, adjacent, and bleached fronds was extracted, and the V3 variables amplified from 16S rDNA genes were carried out by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). Finally, the 23 objective bands were cloned and identified. The number and diversity index of the bacterial community of the epiphytes from the three fronds were calculated after digitization of the experimental results. The similarity among the dominant species in the bacterial communities were compared by non-metric multidimensional scaling (nMDS) and redundancy analysis (RDA). The results show that the colony forming units and bacterial community diversity increased gradually with the aggravation in the degree of lesion in <0.05). The nMDS results indicate that the bacterial community composition of the epiphytes varies between the healthy and bleached fronds, while the composition of adjacent fronds is closer compared with that between healthy fronds. The RDA results reveal that the potential dominant bacteria of the epiphytes of the healthy and adjacent fronds are Pseudoalteromonas, respectively. However, the potential dominant bacteria of the epiphytes of the bleached fronds were not identified. The dominant bacteria of the epiphytes of the bleached attached fronds were . It can be seen from the above results that there is a significant difference between the healthy fronds and the diseased fronds of in terms of the bacterial community composition and dominant bacteria of the epiphytes, while the epiphytic bacterial community composition of the adjacent fronds was more similar than that of the healthy fronds. 参考文献 相似文献 引证文献

Bioethical Considerations of Advancing the Application of Marine Biotechnology and Aquaculture.

Normative ethical considerations of growth of the marine biotechnology and aquaculture disciplines in biopharming, food production, and marine products commercialization from a bioethical perspective have been limited. This paucity of information begs the question of what constitutes a bioethical approach (i.e., respect for individuals or autonomy; beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice) to marine biotechnology and aquaculture, and whether it is one that is appropriate for consideration. Currently, thoughtful discussion on the bioethical implications of use, development, and commercialization of marine organisms or their products, as well as potential environmental effects, defaults to human biomedicine as a model. One must question the validity of using human bioethical principlism moral norms for appropriating a responsible marine biotechnology and aquaculture ethic. When considering potential impacts within these disciplines, deference must be given to differing value systems in order to find common ground to advance knowledge and avoid emotive impasses that can hinder the science and its application. The import of bioethical considerations when conducting research and/or production is discussed. This discussion is directed toward applying bioethical principles toward technology used for food, biomedical development (e.g., biopharming), or as model species for advancement of knowledge for human diseases.

Enzymatic Processes in Marine Biotechnology.

In previous review articles the attention of the biocatalytically oriented scientific community towards the marine environment as a source of biocatalysts focused on the habitat-related properties of marine enzymes. Updates have already appeared in the literature, including marine examples of oxidoreductases, hydrolases, transferases, isomerases, ligases, and lyases ready for food and pharmaceutical applications. Here a new approach for searching the literature and presenting a more refined analysis is adopted with respect to previous surveys, centering the attention on the enzymatic process rather than on a single novel activity. Fields of applications are easily individuated: (i) the biorefinery value-chain, where the provision of biomass is one of the most important aspects, with aquaculture as the prominent sector; (ii) the food industry, where the interest in the marine domain is similarly developed to deal with the enzymatic procedures adopted in food manipulation; (iii) the selective and easy extraction/modification of structurally complex marine molecules, where enzymatic treatments are a recognized tool to improve efficiency and selectivity; and (iv) marine biomarkers and derived applications (bioremediation) in pollution monitoring are also included in that these studies could be of high significance for the appreciation of marine bioprocesses.

Europe had implemented certain strategies to develop marine biotechnology, by identifying the opportunities and requirement established in R&D within the country for the development of novel marine product and marine screening.
