A PROPOSED METHOD FOR SPEECH AND LANGUAGE TESTING WITHIN A HEARING SCREENING PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN STARTING SCHOOL

This article sets out a proposal for how one might expand hearing screening in school children so as to include testing of speech mastery. From 2008 to 2019, the Institute of Physiology and Pathology of Hearing (IPPH) implemented a program to screen the hearing of Polish children starting school, covering over 1 million children. Its success prompted the development of a screening model to cover the entire process of verbal communication. One result was the "Equal Start in Education", a program implemented from 2019 to 2022 in the Lublin province, otherwise known as the "Lublin Program for Early Detection and Therapy of Communication Disorders in Children Starting School". It was conducted by the University Children’s Clinical Hospital in Lublin and the Maria Curie-Sklodowska University, in cooperation with IPPH, and was designed to assess hearing, auditory processing, voice, and speech-language. The program was successful in addressing various issues related to the screening of all communication skills. Here we present findings from the program and propose a testing procedure used to evaluate speech. The screening procedure might be applied more widely in the future, and could diagnose those children requiring audiological and speech-language therapy.

Co ze mną zrobisz, choć mnie nie zobaczysz? Afordancje i Noc Kultury

The organization of the cyclical open-air festival Night of Culture in Lublin in cooperation with a research group works on two levels. The first is the level of an offer of experiences and reflections for the audience of the Night of Culture. The second is the level of research – social and other – on the design, implementation and effects of the first level. On both levels, a phenomenon plays an important role that can be described from the perspective of cognitive ecology with the term "affordance." A systematic analysis of this can lead to the third level: a meta-analysis of the street festival under discussion. I will not undertake such a complex task in this text, which is partly a review and then a "report", but I will make a brief reconstruction of the conceptual and design work of the Affordances Activity, in which I participated significantly and regularly, as well as will consider the stage of the production of designed objects and their subsequent operation during this year's (2023) edition of the Night of Culture, in which a group of volunteers (students of the Maria Curie-Sklodowska University) played an important role. Remarks of the aforementioned meta-research dimension of the project constitute a wide margin of the article.

DEMOCRATIC VALUES AND DIGITAL SKILLS OF STUDENTS IN HIGHER EDUCATIONAL ESTABLISHMENTS OF POLAND AND UKRAINE

The subject of the paper is evaluating and comparing the activity of using digital technologies for the realisation of democratic values by students of Polish and Ukrainian higher educational establishments: rights to freedom of access to information; tolerant communication with other people; awareness of the values of solidarity, equality.The study was carried out at Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin (Poland), The Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce (Poland), Radom Academy of Economics (Poland), Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (Ukraine), Poltava V.G. Korolenko National Pedagogical University (Ukraine). Based on the survey results, the quantitative and qualitative analysis of digital technologies used in the development of democratic ideals and social activity of youth are carried.The results obtained are typologically common for students of both Polish and Ukrainian higher educational establishments.The paper provides recommendations for teachers of higher educational establishments on the use of digital technologies to support the development of students’ democratic values in formal and non-formal learning and draws attention to the problem of forming digital critical competence of students.

II International Seminar of Cultural Linguistics. Values in the Language Picture of the World of Lithuanians and Poles. Folk, National, Multi-ethnic, and Multicultural Heritage

The second international seminar on cultural linguistics “Vertybės Lietuvių ir Lenkų pasaulėvaizdyje. Liaudiškasis, tautinis, daugiatautis ir daugiakultūris paveldas” was held online between September 24th and 25th, 2020. It was organized by the Faculty of Philology of Vilnius University and the Institute of Polish Philology of Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin. More than 30 academics from Lithuania, Poland, Germany, and Ukraine attended the seminar. Participants discussed various aspects of the linguistic image of the world of the Slavs and Balts. Attention was paid, in particular, to the lexical representation of concepts (homeland, home, rye, bread, patriotism, anger, fear, truth, mother, etc.), metaphors, phraseological units, folk phraseology and prospects for its further research, lexicographic sources, and categorization problems.

Biology of flowering and insect visitors of Iris aphylla L. (Iridaceae)

The paper presents the morphology of the flower of Iris aphylla L., which is a protected species in many European countries. The study comprises phenological observations of flowering and assessment of nectar and pollen production, and flowering and fruiting abundance. Additionally, the number of insect visitors on the flowers was monitored. The investigations of specimens originating from 4 populations in central-eastern Poland (Wyzyna Lubelska Upland) were conducted in the Botanical Garden of Maria Curie-Sklodowska University. It was found that morphological features of the analysed flowers, i.e. the 6-angular ovary and the perianth tube, which is 2-fold longer than the ovary, are typical for the taxon I. aphylla [=I. aphylla var. typica L.]. The first flowers developed at the turn of April and May at air temperature of 12-13 °C. The plants produced, on average, 3 flowers per stem, 84.2 flowers per 1 m2, and 6.2 capsules per 1 m2. The flowers released nectar with a moderate amount of sugar and produced high quantities of pollen. Mononychus punctumalbum Herbst. and bumblebees were found to be the main flower pollinators.

Zachowania zdrowotne studentów kierunków nauczycielskich

Zachowania zdrowotne są uznawane za jedne z podstawowych determinantów zdrowia.
 Nauczyciel, obok rodziców, odgrywa ważną rolę w kształtowaniu pozytywnych zachowań
 zdrowotnych u dzieci i młodzieży, dlatego studenci studiów nauczycielskich powinni
 prezentować prozdrowotny styl życia. Celem badań przedstawionych w niniejszym
 artykule było zdiagnozowanie poziomu deklarowanych przez studentów kierunków
 nauczycielskich pozytywnych zachowań mających związek ze zdrowiem. Badania
 przeprowadzono w grupie 157 studentów kierunków nauczycielskich Uniwersytetu
 Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej w Lublinie. Zastosowano kwestionariusz ankiety składający
 się ze Skali Pozytywnych Zachowań Zdrowotnych opracowany przez Magdalenę
 Woynarowską-Sołdan i Dorotę Więziak-Białowolską (2012) oraz metryczki. U części
 badanych stwierdzono niedostatki w zakresie zachowań o charakterze prozdrowotnym
 względem odżywiania, dbałości o ciało, odpoczynku i zdrowia psychospołecznego,
 bezpieczeństwa oraz aktywności fizycznej, co w przypadku pracy w zawodzie przekłada
 się na niską gotowość, aby własnym przykładem propagować prozdrowotny styl życia.
 Powinno to zintensyfikować edukację i promocję zdrowia wśród studentów studiów
 pedagogicznych, aby zminimalizować negatywne konsekwencje dla zdrowia oraz by
 w pełni wdrożyć rolę wychowawcy zdrowia w przyszłości.

How business students gain knowledge and skills on geographic information systems. The results of GIS project development

Geographic information systems can be used in many areas (e.g. trade, marketing, logistics, public administration, meteorology, forestry, agriculture, environmental monitoring, aviation). Young people born in the era of IT want and need to use and learn new technologies and applications. Students are interested in internet of things, virtual reality, augmented reality, big data and mobility. These technologies create large amounts of information that has to be appropriately captured, ordered/filtered and presented preferably in a graphical from. Nowadays we can observe growing interest in presentation of phenomena/processes in a form of interactive maps that can be created with the use of GIS - computerized systems for capturing, storing and visualizing data related to positions on Earth’s surface. The aim of the paper is to present results of research on students’ knowledge and skills in the area of geographic information systems. The article contains theoretical background of GIS. Presents the course framework entitled ''E-logistics and GIS''. The course was prepared for students of logistic at Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Poland. The main part of the article contains the results of quantitative research in the area of gaining knowledge and skills on GIS that were performed in June 2016 on a group of students of logistics. The performed research shows that students associate GIS mainly with maps, location, data processing, they acquire knowledge and skills in the area of GIS watching video tutorials, following the instructions received from teacher and by observing and listening their colleagues. The main problems that occurred during GIS project development were related to GIS tool usage, data acquisition and lack of basic knowledge.

Due to the dynamics of the modern labor market, students are required to undertake various activities that will positively influence the career path. It is essential that the graduate of higher education does not feed the ranks of the unemployed. Relatively high competition, a high number of people holding diplomas at various universities should encourage students to look for alternative paths of development opportunities, shaping their passions and acquiring diverse competences. All this is possible with the Projector Program – student volunteering. As the name suggests, it is a program whose leading idea is volunteering. The aim of the presented article is to approximate the assumptions of the Projektor Program – student volunteering as a form of unusual activity that provides a range of opportunities for participants. This is an undertaking undertaken in cooperation with the Polish-American Freedom Foundation, which is the founder of activities. The program covered all of Poland with its reach, involving students, children, youth, teachers and entire schools. It fits in with the assumptions of shaping a civil society as an expression of the social potential of Poles, in this case people at the age of adolescence. It is an example of activation while promoting activities to counteract the exclusion of children and young people from rural and provincial areas. This task is carried out through the development of passion, interests and discovering the talents of all involved parties. Volunteers, which are usually students, stimulate younger children to strengthen their potentials, and they also intensify their activities on organizational and managerial issues.This kind of activity in the environment of rural and provincial schools brings a number of benefits. In addition to the possibilities of acquiring knowledge from new fields, or expanding the existing one, it seems to be important to promote active social attitudes among young people, develop passions and realize own ideas, increase the attractiveness of school activities for students (both current and future), that is, enriching the offer of extra-curricular activities in the institution, discovering young talents, and how important it is to awaken the passion for general science. The great advantage of the program is the opportunity to see interesting experiences, take advantage of the rich base of educational materials of the Program.Acknowledgments. Trade and craft are the most important occupations of the urban population since ancient times. The role of the representative is to use all the efforts and the best skills and experience that will help to achieve the goal. In a rapidly changing world we can see an evolution of consumer sentiment and behaviour. The role of the sales representative in each case is the same – to support the customers’ decision to sell as many goods represented by an economic entity as possible. Also we are talking about the constant increase in sales. As for the tasks, they are very diverse. The sale process can be very simple – the customer comes in – gets a purchase offer and makes a positive or negative decision for the seller. However, in many cases the process is certainly more complicated. The person, who offers this product using social skills and competencies, can have a significant impact on the final purchase decision. Competences related to the speed of learning and owning a natural tendency to be a seller, for example, developed emotional intelligence, are important. Analyzing the methods of influence on the consumer, we notice the division into passive technologies (without the direct participation of the sales representative) and active (with the participation of the sales representative). According to Kotler and Keller (2011) psychological and logical resistance often arise during the purchasing process. Quoting: «psychological resistance includes resistance to a changing world, preference for a recognized source of supply or brands, apathy, reluctance to give up something, unpleasant associations left by a sales representative, ingrained ideas, reluctance to make decisions or a neurotic attitude to money. Logical impedance may be applied to price, delivery time, and product or company characteristics». To deal with them, the sales representative must also demonstrate social skills in addition to product expertise.Experience of working with other people, developed methods of social influence, flexibility, emotional intelligence which are considered as the ability to assess this situation, ways to deal with stressful situations, personality traits, the ability to manage the trading process and customer decisions are the elements that give high sales results for sales representatives.Acknowledgements. Szkolenie biblioteczne on-line w ośrodkach akademickich z perspektywy przemian ostatniej dekady

The article presents advancement in the area of online library training based on: the analysis of the web pages of the libraries being supervised by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the results of surveys conducted among the librarians responsible for the library trainings and a case study of the library training held by the Main Library of Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin along with the results of the evaluation survey attached to the said training.

The Practice of Entrepreneurial Competence Development among Students of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin

Purpose – the purpose of the article is to diagnose determinants of the effective development of entrepreneurial competence in members of the MCSU academic community and to develop a concept of a tool used for that purpose. Design/Methodology/Approach – Polish and foreign literature was researched to find answers to the following questions: 1) What requirements are imposed on universities with regard to the development of entrepreneurial competence among students? 2) How should the effective education of adults be guaranteed? 3) What are the methodological bases for the realization of focus group interviews? After that, focus research was carried out among 43 students from 11 faculties of the Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin to learn their opinions about: • The way the essence of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial attitudes and behaviour are perceived, • conditions created by the University for entrepreneurial education and for the development of entrepreneurial attitudes and behaviours, • factors that stimulate or block their entrepreneurship, • preferred methods of development of entrepreneurial competences. The obtained results of literature studies and focus interviews were used in order to develop the concept of an Entrepreneurship Academy or a complex program for the development of entrepreneurship in the academic community at the University. Findings – entrepreneurial competences are among the ones of key importance for the successful functioning of people in the society as well as in their personal and professional lives. There is an urgent need to develop them and universities play an important role in satisfying it. To guarantee the best effectiveness of didactic processes focusing on the development of the knowledge of entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial attitudes and behaviour to members of the academic community, education curriculums should be developed considering the needs and preferences of the interested parties. Education methods based on learning in action and through experience should also be used. Practical implications – the developed concept of the MCSU Entrepreneurship Academy is comprehensive and flexible. It is possible to be implemented in any school of higher education in full or in the form of its selected modules depending on the identified needs of the interested parties and financial resources available. Original value – schools of higher education have varied curriculums related to entrepreneurship, however, the MCSU Entrepreneurship Academy is an end-to-end tool based on the holistic approach and involving the cooperation of entities representing all components of the entrepreneurship ecosystem in the socioeconomic vicinity. Poczucie zagrożenia bezrobociem jako zaprzeczenie inkluzji społecznej młodzieży kończącej studia wyższe

The relationship between academic education and the functioning of university graduates on the labour market has recently been subject to numerous studies and analyses. Many researchers highlight risks that stem from problems in finding employment by young graduates and the consequences of these problems like social marginalization at the very early stage of career. Hence, academic education is subject to multiple analyses in the context of its quality factors or its relevance to market processes such as supply and demand (see e.g. Dyczewski 1990; Radziewicz-Winnicki, Wolk 2015). A successful transition from education to work is very often decisive for the future career and professional growth of graduates. Therefore, to be able to confront one’s professional education background with the situation on the labour market and one’s chances of finding an educationally relevant job is strategic (see e.g. Banka 1992; Wierzejska 2014; Wierzejska, Karpenko 2015). The problem analysed in this article is the sense of risk of unemployment as experienced by the students at the threshold of career. The analyses are an attempt to examine this sense of risk as experienced by graduates of Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin (UMCS) representing diverse disciplines of academic education.

In the Circle of Inspiration of Anna Wierzbicka: The Cognitive Definition - 30 Years Later

The author recalls the close ties linking Professor Anna Wierzbicka with the community of linguists centered around the journal “Etnolingwistyka”/“Etnolinguistics” published in Lublin (vols. 1-30, 1988-2018) and with Maria Curie-Sklodowska University, where in 2004 she received the title of doctor honoris causa for her research into universals in different world languages and her service as a morally sensitive humanist. The complementary character between the frameworks advocated by Wierzbicka and Lublin ethnolinguists consists in the opposition to taxonomic approaches to word meaning and the adoption of the subjective reconstruction principle, which derives from Wilhelm Humboldt’s philosophy of language; in the apprecia- tion of the role of colloquial language and the intuition of the average language user; in the use of both systemic and textual data, taking into account all relevant communication features that can be supported with “linguistic evidence”; in the use of simple sentences for definitions, which are arranged in coherent, facetted sequences. Anna Wierzbicka, similarly to Lublin ethnolinguists, postulates to capture the meaning of words in the context of social life, history and national culture. In particular, the author focuses on the concept of the so-called cognitive definition. The article discusses its genesis, construction principles and the most important inspirations for its emergence; although the concept itself was created autonomously as an extension of studies on the language of folklore, independently of Anna Wierzbicka’s works, it nevertheless exhibits clear parallels to the way of thinking of the scholar from Canberra. The author of this article shows the similarities (convergences) between the cognitive definition and the NSM (Natural Semantic Metalanguage) method developed by Anna Wierzbicka on the examples of mother and gold , but it also highlights some differences, which in the case of the cognitive definition are related to the use of colloquial definientia that do not have the status of semantic “primitives” ( primes ). Finally, on the example of the concept HOME/HOUSE, the author considers new perspectives for applying the cognitive definition in comparative works undertaken within the framework of the EUROJOS seminar.

Wprowadzenie systemów informacji geograficznej do edukacji biznesowej na przykładzie polskich studentów logistyki

This article aims to extend current research in the area of teaching geographic information systems (GIS) in business faculties. GIS has a lot of areas of usage (logistics, trade, marketing, infrastructure management, public administration, archaeology, geology, meteorology forestry, agriculture environmental monitoring, aviation, statistics, education), however is not a popular subject especially in business school programs. Young people quickly learn and use new applications and technologies. Therefore, the author presents the GIS classes framework and the opinions of students about their knowledge and perception of GIS systems. The article contains theoretical background of GIS, presents the main areas of geographic information systems usage. The main part of the paper is a framework of ''E-logistics and GIS'' programme prepared for students of logistics at Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Poland. The author analyzes also students' opinions about GIS and presents main conclusions derived from quantitative research conducted in a form of online questionnaire performed in January 2017 on a group of 96 logistics students. At the end of the article there can be found the proposal for the future research. The author examined only students of logistics of Faculty of Economics, so small group of young people. Some future research should be performed in order to compare the obtained results with GIS-related programmes from different universities in Poland and abroad.

Charakterystyka hydrologiczna Kosarzewki

<p>W oparciu o materiały hydrograficzne zbierane w Zakładzie Hydrologii od lat 50. XX wieku przedstawiono warunki występowania wód podziemnych i ich rolę w zasilaniu Kosarzewki. Jest to zlewnia o powierzchni 209,3 km<sup>2</sup>, położona 12 km na południe od Lublina, w dorzeczu górnej Bystrzycy. Zasoby wodne tego terenu, ich ilość i jakość, decydują o zaopatrzeniu Lublina w wodę. </p><p>Wody podziemne w zlewni Kosarzewki występują w szczelinowo-porowych, węglanowych skałach górnej kredy oraz paleocenu. O warunkach hydrogeologicznych decyduje tektonika górotworu oraz naprzemianległe występowanie w stropowych partiach skał górnej kredy zróżnicowanych litologicznie warstw decydujących o utrzymywaniu się kilku poziomów wodonośnych Czynniki te zadecydowały o braku ciągłości pierwszego zwierciadła wody, o istnieniu skokowo zmiennych rzędnych zwierciadła wody oraz o istnieniu źródeł w różnym położeniu hipsometrycznym, zarówno w dolinach rzecznych jak też na wysoko wyniesionych równinach denudacyjnych obszaru zlewni.</p><p>Przepływ wód podziemnych następuje z południowego wschodu na północny zachód, zgodnie z układem głównych dolin. W regionalnym drenażu wód podziemnych stwierdza się możliwość podziemnego przepływu wody z lewej części zlewni Kosarzewki do Bystrzycy, która jest głębiej wcięta w podłoże skalne.</p>W strukturze odpływu Kosarzewki dominuje zasilanie podziemne, z którego pochodzi 87% wody rzecznej. Woda podziemna dociera do rzek poprzez bezpośredni drenaż korytowy oraz przez źródła zasilane z głównego poziomu występującego w skałach górnej kredy. W okresie badań stwierdzono synchroniczne zmiany stanów wody podziemnej, wydajności źródeł i przepływu Kosarzewki. Rzeka słabo reaguje na zasilania atmosferyczne, wody opadowe są retencjonowane w podłożu skalnym. Spływ powierzchniowy pojawia się sporadycznie, częściej w okresie przemarznięcia gruntu niż w okresie letnim.

The Department of Methodology of History and History of Historiography began functioning at Lublin’s Maria Curie-Sklodowska University Institute of History in 1987. Th e establishment of the Department was initiated by Professor Jan Pomorski, who became its Head and has since held this position. Other faculty members are: Dr Ewa Solska, Dr Hab. Piotr Witek and Dr Hab. Marek Woźniak, Associate Professor. The Department embraces historians, theorists of history science, methodologists of sciences, whose methodological style and training developed under infl uence of the Poznan Methodology School ( Jerzy Topolski, Jerzy Kmita, Anna Palubicka), Andrzej F. Grabski’s model of history of historiography, Robert A. Rosenstone’s visual history, the social constructivism of Nelson Goodman, Peter L. Berger and Th omas Luckman or Stanley Fish, the neopragmatism of Richard Rorty and Hilary Putnam, Th omas Kuhn’s historicism, the poststructuralism of Roland Barthes and Michel Foucault, the hermeneutics of Hans Georg Gadamer and Paul Ricoeur, the cognitive grammar of George Lakoff and Mark Johnson, the narrativism of Hayden White and Franklin Ankersmit, Cliff ord Geertz’s interpretive anthropology, and the tradition of the Lvov Warsaw School (Alfred Tarski, Kazimierz Ajdukiewicz, Roman Ingarden) and analytical philosophy. Th e teachers of the Department of Methodology of History conduct research in the following fi elds: methodology of history, history of historiography, neuroscience in the context of humanistic research, visual history, public history, digital humanities, cognitive science, and contemporary theories of literature. Th ey conduct classes with students in methodology of history, history of historiography, history of philosophy, production of historical films, in designing historical games, knowledge of museums, and introduction to media studies. The Department’s faculty are co-originators and co-authors of programs taught at two specializations in historical studies: Management of Cultural Heritage and Commercialization of Historical Knowledge, and Applied History. Both specializations train and prepare students to practice history in the field of public history. The teachers of the UMCS Department of Methodology of History together with its doctoral and graduate students eff ectively collaborate with many methodological and historiographical centers in Poland and abroad. They successfully develop and bring into effect Professor Jerzy Topolski’s idea of the need to carry out theoretical refl ection on academic historiography (research practice of historians), broadening it with considerations on public history.

Entrepreneurship Determinants among the Students of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin in the Light of the Conducted Research

Purpose – The goal of this article is to present results of the research conducted among the students of the Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin with regard to factors stimulating their entrepreneurship or constituting a barrier in that area. The research covered one of the dimensions of entrepreneurship, i.e. the conducting of one’s own business. Design/Methodology/Approach – The following questions were asked as a part of the research procedure: 1) What is the entrepreneurial activity level of the MCSU students? 2) What factors motivate them to start their businesses? 3) What factors discourage them from managing their firms? The sample-based study method was applied; because of that, it was necessary to get the empirical material from individuals belonging to a representative research sample. Students from all MCSU departments participated in the research. Data were collected in 2014–2016 with the use of a categorized interview questionnaire on 1,219 respondents selected at random. Thanks to the information contained in the metrics, it was possible to divide participants in the research on the basis of the following criteria: sex, study degree, field of studies, degree of financial dependency on third parties, business experience of parents or caretakers. The statistical materiality of differences in participants’ declarations was determined with the use of the chi-square test and derivative measures such as V-Cramer, T-Czuprow or Yule coefficients. An analysis of the structural similarity index had a supporting significance in that area. Findings – Levels of entrepreneurial activity among the MCSU students were analysed. Factors stimulating and discouraging them from being entrepreneurs were identified. Materiality of these factors was also determined for the entire research sample and for distinguished groups of respondents. The dependence of the entrepreneurship levels among students on their participation in individual groups was analysed. Practical implications – Results obtained in this manner and conclusions drawn from this research will allow one to work out an end-to-end program of academic entrepreneurship development aimed at the development of entrepreneurial attitudes and behaviours among students and graduates as well as the promotion of entrepreneurial culture in academic circles. Original value – The originality of the analysis results from the specific nature of the research conducted. It was the first time when the entrepreneurship research covered students of all MCSU faculties. The exploration took place in groups distinguished from the research sample, which allowed for a greater integrity of analyses. The obtained results constitute a stimulus to continue the research with the use of focus groups. Dysleksja rozwojowa – wiedza i doświadczenia własne przyszłych logopedów

The article presents the results of the survey about specific reading and writing difficulties, which was conducted in the group of 25 students of the first year of postgraduate studies in general logopedics at the Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin. The aim of the survey was to establish the level of knowledge about developmental dyslexia possessed by prospective speech therapists and their awareness of the problems facing children and adults suffering from dyslexia as well as of the needs of children with the risk of dyslexia.
