A new acid fromcalea urticaefolia seed oil:trans‐3,cis‐9,cis‐12‐octadecatrienoic acid

AbstractA major constituent fatty acid (31.2%) fromCalea urticaefolia (Mill.) DC. seed oil is the previously unknowntrans‐3,cis‐9,cis‐12‐octadecatrienoic acid. The oil also contains 2.2% of an unidentified acid and others with gas‐liquid chromatographic characteristics that correspond to the conventional fatty acids: myristic, 0.1%; palmitic, 9.3%; stearic, 2.9%; oleic, 5.3%; and linoleic, 48.9%.

Enzymatic hydration of [formula omitted], 10-epoxyoctadecanoic acid by cell-free extracts of germinating flax rust uredospores

Gas chromatographic analysis of the fatty acids from flax rust ( Melampsora lini ) uredospores ( Frear, 1960; Tulloch and Ledingham, 1962) has shown that cis -9 , 10-epoxyoctadecanoic acid is the major fatty acid constituent. The flax rust uredospore lipids have also been shown to be rapidly metabolized upon the initiation of germination ( Frear, 1960). The present report describes the results of experiments which indicate that the initial step in the metabolism of cis -9 , 10-epoxyoctadecanoic acid by germinating flax rust uredospores after hydrolysis of triglycerides is an enzymatic hydration with resulting inversion of configuration to form threo -9,10- dihydroxyoctadecanoic acid .

A lipogenic toxin released through the interaction of a new cytopathic agent (lipovirus) and cultured human cells.

The release of a toxic product from cultured human cells infected by a new cytopathic agent (the lipovirus) was described. This toxin was dissociable from the infectious particles. It induced sudanophilia of human and mouse cells, an increase in the total fatty acid content, and a change in the major constituent fatty acids. Similar toxin was not demonstrated in cultures infected by the vaccinia herpes simplex, adeno 3, polyoma, polio 1 and 2, Coxsackie B1, parainfluenza A, and Rous sarcoma viruses. Preliminary characterization indicated that this toxin was resistant to tryptic digestion and could not be dialyzed or neutralized by human gamma globulin. It was inactivated at 58 degrees C for 30 minutes, but stable at 37 degrees , 4 degrees , and -60 degrees C. The significance of these findings is discussed.

SummaryConcentrations of 0.79-2.50 meq of volatile fatty acids per 100 ml were found in pooled ejaculates of bovine semen. Acetic and formic acids were identified as the major volatile fatty acid constituents by column chromatography, paper chromatography and selective oxidation of the formic acid.
