Converged and professional: the model of archive, library and museum services at the University of Edinburgh’s Centre for Research Collections

This paper considers a practical example of the benefits of close cooperation between the different professional disciplines of archives, librarianship and museum curation. In 2008 the University of Edinburgh opened a new Centre for Research Collections in the Main Library, to bring together for the first time all the main heritage collections and make them available to users in the same space. The benefits of co-location were much greater than anticipated from the perspectives both of users and of staff development. User demand has increased from around 8,000 consultations per year to around 25,000, with a high level of support for being able to access different collection formats through the same on-site or online journey. Staff from different professional backgrounds work together on project development, service improvements and with the integrated open digital collections. Japanese studies and scholarly legacy: A tribute for Library collections of Russia

The article deals with the origins and evolutionary history of the main libraries’ collections in Russia (St. Petersburg and Moscow), which are of great significance for the scholars involved in Japanese studies or Oriental studies. The concerned libraries specifics’ analyses also demonstrate interlink with the evolution of Russian science and museum collections since Peter the Great epoch. The unique character of the mentioned library stocks should be taken into account due to the kind of oriental research activity. Being changed in their historical transformations nowadays, we know the libraries of the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts, Kunstkamera, Science Academy Library, Russian National Library, Library of St. Petersburg State University. Some shift of “Oriental studies” to Moscow region had taken place later, according to with the need of establishing museum-library-educational institutions in that important city of Russia too (about the mid of 19 th century). The process started from the moving from St. Petersburg to Moscow of the collections of Rumyantsev Museum, which had formed the base for the greatest Russian Library — “Leninka”. Approximately the same time had marked the appearance of State Public Historical Library (GPIB), Asia and Africa Institute Library at Moscow University (ISAA). Russian State Library of Foreign Literature (VGBIL), the library in the Institute of information for social studies (INION) had appeared in Moscow in the Soviet period. After the Second World War was founded Moscow Oriental Institute (IVAN) and Far East studies Institute (IDV). The above-mentioned libraries and institutions are basic book collections for Oriental studies in Russia till nowadays.

Literature Review of Suram(Fever) in Siddha Medicine

Background:Siddha Medicine is one of the Indigenous medical systems, which says that there are 4448 diseases affecting humans. Suram (fever) is considered as one of the diseases in Siddha Medicine whereas Western Medicine considers it as a sign and symptom of many diseases. Aim: Literary review on Suram to understand the synonyms, causes, pathology and types which have been mentioned in Siddha literatures. Materials & Methods: Literatures pertaining to Suram were reviewed from library of Unit of Siddha Medicine, University of Jaffna and main library of Jaffna municipal council. Thirteen books were identified and collected for this study. Observations: Out of 13 literatures 7 (53.84 %) have mentioned about the causes of Suram. All 13 literatures have mentioned the types of Suram which was categorized based on Doshas. 45 causes were identified and categorized based on the affecting Tridatus (Vatha, Pitha and Kapha) through unhealthy diet and habits. 182 types of Suram were identified, among which 64 types (35%) fall under the category of mixed types that means these were categorized based on the affected Doshas, Dhatus and clinical features. Vata and Vata Kapha Suram are mentioned in 77% of literature and 71% of the cause has been mentioned as the reason for vitiated Vathadosha. Conclusion: The literary survey reveals, unhealthy food and habits (71%) as the main cause for Vatha and Vathakapha Suram.

Kolekcja muzyczna Kazimierza Czekotowskiego (1901-1972) w zbiorach Biblioteki Głównej Akademii Muzycznej im. Stanisława Moniuszki w Gdańsku

The Main Library of Stanisław Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdansk gathers and stores many collections submitted by different people, especially by the pedagogues of the Academy. One of them is a collection of notes used in artistic work and maybe in vocal teaching by the outstanding Polish singer Kazimierz Czekotowski. The article describes the contents of the collection, particularly the items concerning composers and publishers. The most interesting are hand-written dedications, because, in many cases, it’s the only one document confirming artistic contacts between a composer and a performer. It also enables determining the date of composing and the first performance of the work or – indirectly – help identify publication dates. Secondly, it is drawn up a list of publishers present in these collection, which is a contribution to the characteristics of the situation of the Polish music publishing market… (time limits due to publication dates of the items from the Czekotowski collection).

“I Looked into Other Ages...”: E.M. Shapiro — A Poet, Translator, Librarian

The article reveals the main milestones of the life and work of Ella Moiseyevna Shapiro (1938—2017), a remarkable woman who had three main professional passions in her life — poetry, translation work, and library. Basing on generalization and systematization of E.M. Shapiro’s creative work, the authors of the article give the opportunity to acquaint with her brilliant translations into Russian of the works by H. Longfellow, L. Labe, M. Desbordes-Valmore, L. de Lisle, G. de Nerval and many other poets from different countries and eras. In addition, due to her extensive knowledge in the field of library science, bibliography and informatics, working in the Russian State Library, E.M. Shapiro wrote numerous reviews of foreign materials on the development of art and culture, which are now available to readers of the main library of the country. The depth of her creativity is revealed in her poetic opuses, which, after the first opportunity to see them, extend the poetic space of cultural life, contributing to inclusion of the works of the poetess in research practices. Among these works, there are poems, full of philosophical understanding of the world, high lyricism, sense of belonging to the world, a wonderful children’s series, and the main book is the poetry collection “Strange Roaming”. The poetic transcriptions of psalms, made equirhythmically (i.e. they can be set to music), are unique. Due to this study, the poetry of E.M. Shapiro, little known during her lifetime, becomes an important part of the Russian and world cultural heritage.

Rethinking Special Collections Moves as Opportunities, not Obstacles

In the summer of 2017, the Marian Library—a special library devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary within the larger University of Dayton Libraries system—completed a move of its rare book and archival collections into a new space within the main library building. The space, previously leased to the Society of Mary provincial archives, was already outfitted with a Liebert system for temperature and humidity controls, as well as shelving and some furniture.

Located in and managed by a Swiss academic institution, this platform provides full open access to SComS contents, with a strong commitment to a transparent and qualitatively excellent publication process, whilst guaranteeing no publishing fees for our authors. We are grateful to Elsevier for our collaboration, which lasted from 2012 to 2016; now the moment has come for us to be open to the future. He specializes in document and transcription analysis. He is also a member of the Church History Department Editorial Board. In 2005, he earned an MA degree in American history from Brigham Young University, and in 2009 he earned a second MA in library and information science with an archival concentration from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Use of electronic information resources by arts undergraduates during the preparation of final year dissertations: a study at University of Peradeniya

Electronic Information Resources (EIR) perform an important role in the reference resources provided by the academic libraries. Readers are increasingly encouraged to use electronic resources for their research purposes. It is evident that most of the undergraduates consider the library as an important place during their course of study, especially during the preparation of final year dissertations. Therefore, the main objective of the study was to examine the usage of EIR by final year undergraduates during the time of preparation of their dissertation. The study used the survey research design with the application of purposive sampling method. The total population of the final year special degree in Arts students of the Faculty of Arts was 619 in 2014/2015 academic year. A total of 49 final year students of the special degree in Arts who visited the Main Library voluntarily participated in this survey within a period of one month from 01/03/2015 to 31/03/2015. Descriptive statistical methods were used to analyze the data. The study findings indicated that the students used Internet search engines rather than specialized data bases and full-text resources to search information. Nearly 88% of the respondents had never used the library web page to search EIR. Nearly 10% were familiar with electronic resources available in the library. The main problems associated with non-use of EIR are: lack of skills in information searching and very limited training opportunities and limited facilities in accessing the Internet. According to the findings the reasons for lower usage of electronic resources by undergraduates are the lack of basic skills / knowledge in IT and English language barrier. In order to exploit the full potential of electronic information, university library and the faculty should play active roles by organizing awareness programmes, promoting EIR use among students and develop infrastructure facilities in the Main Library to enhance usage of EIR. Introducing information literacy skills course for students’ curricula is recommended to get maximum benefits of EIR Use.

Use and user satisfaction with library services and resources at the main library of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, Sri Lanka

The main library of the General Sir John Kotelawela Defence University conducted a survey of the first and third-year undergraduates of the Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Management, Social Sciences and Humanities, to investigate the use and user satisfaction on library services and resources. The study employed the 455 structured questionnaires to the whole population of undergraduates as the main tool for collecting data. Further, various registers were used to count the number of users. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS Version 20. The major findings of the study revealed that the respondents were satisfied with the library resources and services of the library as a whole. Also, the study found that many of the respondents visit the library for more than one reason, whereas the majority of the respondents visit the library for accessing past papers. Other findings show that the largest proportion of the respondents visit the library once a week. As for resources, the textbooks were ranked first, followed by the newspapers/magazine, and reference sources. The less frequently used resources are CD/DVD/VCD, online journals, databases, and library web links. To meet undergraduate information requirements and make them aware of the available resources and services, it is recommended to conduct information literacy programs as well as awareness programs at regular intervals.

Place and Tasks of the Main Library of the Poznań University of Life Sciences in arrangement university–information system for higher education POL-onThe paper presents the tasks performed in the Main Library of the Poznań University of Life Sciences, which are associated with the System of information on higher education POL-on. The leading role of the Main Library is to create and update the database Bibliography of publications of the Poznań University of Life Sciences. Collecting data in the database Bibliography was discussed here, as well as organizational solutions implemented after starting POL-on System. The scope of work related to updating the database structure and adapting it to export data to the Reporting Module of Polish Scholarly Bibliography was presented. Another task entrusted to the Main Library is to collect data entry about conferences, awards and honors, patents and protection rights and to introduce it to the POL-on system. The article also presents difficulties arising during the work and their solutions. All work was carried out in close cooperation with the University authorities on the basis of the Rector’s regulations.

The university base of knowledge as a CRIS type system. The experience of the Main Library of WUTThe paper presents the university base of knowledge as aCRIS type system and at the same time an institutional repository. Systems CRIS Current Research Information System currently being developed by the scientific community gather comprehensive Information about research conducted at individual institutions. The WUT Base of Knowledge using proprietary software OMEGA-PSIR is an example connecting system CRIS and auniversity repository, collecting and preserving intellectual output of WUT. Base of Knowledge is asource of information on the directions of research conducted at the university. The base has many uses: data collection, content archiving, analytical tools and reporting, extensive system parameterization. Academic libraries, participating in the creation of university’s databases, perform an important task for the university, other than the traditional functions of librarians.

Kebijakan Pengembangan Koleksi dan Pemanfaatannya di Perpustakaan Perguruan Tinggi (Analisis Penerapan Kebijakan Pengembangan Koleksi Perpustakaan Utama Universitas Islam Negeri Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta)

The assumption is there are many academic libraries of Indonesia especially under Minister of Religion Affairs (MORA) which hardly meet a demand of their users’ needs because their collection management or collection development policies do not prepare well. Actually to create a better collection, an academic library has to plan its collection well. This research has done with a purpose of inspecting a collection development policy of an academic library in Indonesia and its implementation. The collection development policy of main library of State Islamic University Syarif Hidayatullah at Jakarta in 2008 is the object of this research. This research has done by a descriptive qualitative approach that inspects deeply by means of any deep interview, observation, and document analysis. Having examined the formulation of its collection development policy we know the context of policy’s formulation, some actors who formulate, the roles of the head of the library, the attitude of the university and some values that influence. Having examined its implementation we know that the aims of the policy have achieved or not.

Next generation electronic catalogs in Polish libraries. Usability and information architecture

The latest generation of electronic directories, called the third or next, was founded, among others, as a result of use of principles of usability in the design of websites. To the characteristics of the directories of third generation in technological terms belong: optimization to meet the needs of users, application of metasearch, interconnection of data into one system. Among the features offered by the new OPAC we have: auto-complete, federated search, faceted search, and personalization. In Poland, among the systems that support new functionalities, we can mention: Virtua CHAMO (Main Library of the Pedagogical University of Cracow), KOHA (Main Library of Cracow University of Technology), Primo Exlibris (Main Library of Silesian University of Technology), Summon ProQuest (University Library of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun) and Prolib Integro (Katowice CINiBA). The aim of the article was to compare these systems in the field of applications of modern mechanisms (patterns) of designing the search systems. None of the analyzed retrieval systems contained all available functionalities to facilitate finding information. The least number of functionalities was found in Virtua CHAMO, the most – in the systems of the type of “discovery” (Primo, Summon and Prolib).

Evolution of a Library: Information Storage to Information Use

ABSTRACTThis article presents a detailed look into the thinking behind a successful medical library renovation. It may provide useful insight to those facing the aspect of renovation or reduction in services. The Arnold Medical Library in Honolulu, Hawaii, has served Straub Clinic and Hospital for over four decades and now functions as the main library for Hawaii Pacific Health (HPH), a four-hospital, nonprofit organization in the state of Hawaii. This project involved the engagement of the nursing education department and the hospital administration in an in-depth review of the (a) information needs of the organization as a whole, and (b) creation of a plan to combine infrastructure, resources and services into a space that supports the long-term mission and goals of the organization. The project resulted in the successful renovation of a 450 sq. ft. library converting it into a flexible center for information access, collaboration and study.

Integrated Reference à la Carte: Evaluating, Selecting, and Implementing the Best Features for your Library

ABSTRACTIntegrated reference systems, such as SpringShare's LibAnswers, operate on a single, easy-to-use platform for providing virtual reference services and recording transactions. This article discusses the evidence-based decision-making carried out by librarians at Auburn University's main library and a branch library when deciding which aspects of the LibAnswers platform to incorporate at the two separate locations. Evaluating, selecting, and implementing appropriate components of LibAnswers resulted in complementary but separate systems that met the needs of both patrons and staff. This article adds to the body of literature on integrated reference systems by expanding the focus to include a branch library and its unique considerations and reasons for implementing LibAnswers.

OpenBiblio: a free and open source integrated library management system that answers small libraries’ automation needs

Abstract Purpose -This paper sought to assess the suitability of Openbilio as a free and open source integrated library management system that answers small libraries' automation needs considering the fact that many free and open source integrated library management systems exit that require more skills and resources which these libraries do not have. Methodology -The study was a qualitative technical paper on OpenBiblio. Qualitative data through documents analysis on OpenBiblio was collected and analyzed in light of its strengths and weaknesses. Secondly, the author used his personal experience of working with OpenBiblio to evaluate its suitability for use among small libraries. Findings- The findings show that OpenBiblio is suitable for small libraries because it is easy to install and configure as compared to Koha, Evergreen and other integrated library management systems which require immense technical knowledge of Linux, MYSQL, HTML and CSS. Further, it has also been observed that OpenBiblio can run on a small computer with at least 512Mb of RAM and can run on both Windows and Linux. The study also discovered that OpenBiblio has four modules (Cataloguing, Circulation, OPAC, and Patron management that represent the core functions of small libraries; thus it computerizes the main functions of the library. OpenBiblio was also found to comply with main library standards such as Z39.50 and MARC 21. The paper however discovered that OpenBiblio has limited documentation on the Internet that makes it difficult for new beginners to install and configure it. Originality/value - Very few scholarly papers exist on OpenBiblio as automation software suited small libraries. Many treatises exist only on giant free and open source library management systems such as Koha, ABCD and Evergreen. This paper therefore provides information for small libraries that wish to automate their operations using OpenBiblio. Implications to small libraries- Small libraries should consider adopting and use OpenBiblio to automate their operations as it is easy to install and use . High-Yield, Low-Risk Deselection in an Academic Library

In conjunction with a multi-year renovation of Concordia University's main library, a comprehensive collections reconfiguration project was launched. The new library floor plans provided for increased study space and a reduced footprint for stacks. Significant deselection of physical format materials such as circulating books, reference works, government publications, and microforms was therefore necessary in order to achieve the necessary space reduction and still maintain room for growth. Although different weeding strategies were developed for specific collections and disciplines, the key factors considered were usage, currency and duplication. By focusing on reducing duplication - multiple copies, superseded editions, replication across different formats - and using data extracted from the library system, it has been possible to remove a large volume of items with minimal decision making required from subject librarians. Virtually all weeded materials have been sent to a non-profit reseller or recycled, in keeping with the university's commitment to environmental sustainability. This approach has resulted in the removal of over 60,000 duplicate copies from the monograph collection alone. At the same time access has been retained to most unique content within the collection, allaying faculty concerns about library deselection. In less than two years the original goals of space reduction for print and microform holdings have been exceeded.
