Tuning the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of rare-earth free L10-ordered Mn1-xTMxAl magnetic alloy (TM = Fe, Co, or Ni) with transition elements

Tuning of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of MnAl was studied by substituting Mn of MnAl with transition elements (Fe, Co, or Ni). The Brillouin function and semi-empirical Callen and Callen relation predicted the thermal behaviors of saturation magnetization and magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy. First-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) were performed to calculate the electronic structures of Mn0.5TM0.5Al, where TM = Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni. The estimated total magnetic moment of Mn0.5TM0.5Al decreases as the number of valence electrons (n) of TM (e.g., 7 for Mn (3d5 4 s2), 8 for Fe (3d6 4 s2), 9 for Co (3d7 4 s2), and 10 for Ni (3d8 4 s2)) increases. Ni-substituted MnAl becomes ferrimagnetic, while other TM-substituted MnAl retain a ferromagnetic state. Curie temperature rapidly decreases with increasing the valence electrons from 685 K for MnAl to 20 K for Ni-substituted MnAl. Thermomagnetic behaviors of Mn0.5TM0.5Al (TM = Mn, Fe, Co, or Ni) are reported. Our magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) calculations demonstrate that the magnetocrystalline anisotropy changes to the in-plane from the out-of-plane (uniaxial) direction for Co– and Ni-substituted MnAl. The K reaches a maximum of 2.98 MJ/m3 at n = 8, i.e., Fe substitution.

Radar-absorbing composite materials based on ferrite powders

The paper studies the effect of particle sizes of hexagonal ferrite powders on their electrodynamic properties. SrTi0.2Co0.2Fe11.6O19 and BaSc0.2Fe11.8O19 hexaferrites were used as the objects of research. Grinding in a high-energy planetary mill for up to 60 minutes made it possible to obtain hexaferrite powder particles with the average size successively decreasing from 1.5–2 μm to 0.05–0.15 μm. A scanning electron microscope was used for the analysis. Samples were prepared in a mixture with a polymer binder (70% ferrite + 30% polymer), and their electromagnetic radiation (EMR) absorbing capacity was studied in the microwave range from 30 to 50 GHz. It was shown that there is practically no peak corresponding to ferrimagnetic resonance in the composite with ferrite, with a decrease in the average particle size of BaSc0.2Fe11.8O19 hexaferrite powders to 50–150 nm. The dependences of the real and imaginary parts of the magnetic permeability and dielectric constant are given in the frequency range from 107 to 109 Hz. There was no domain wall resonance in the frequency dependence of magnetic losses for a ferrite-based composite mechanically activated for 60 min. SrTi0.2Co0.2Fe11.6O19 ferrite was milled in a bead mill to particles with an average size of 150–300 nm, and then to drying, pressing, sintering at 1360 °С and subsequent grinding to a size of 200–500 μm to obtain similar composites in a bond with a polymer. It was found that the properties of compositions change significantly with a change in the magnetic component synthesis technology: no resonant pattern of EMR absorption was observed. The Curie temperature was measured using the Faraday method. It was shown that it is ~340 °С for the studied material. Therefore, the effect of precursor milling on changes in magnetocrystalline anisotropy was identified.

Synthesis and Characterization of Zinc and Vanadium Co-Substituted CoFe2O4 Nanoparticles Synthesized by Using the Sol-Gel Auto-Combustion Method.

In recent years, cobalt ferrite has attracted considerable attention due to its unique physical properties. The present study aimed to produce cobalt ferrite magnetic nanoparticles doped with zinc and vanadium using the sol-gel auto-combustion method. For this purpose, Co1−xZnxFe2−yVyO4 (where x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5 and y = 0.00, 0.05, 0.15, 0.25) precursors were calcined at 800 °C for 3 h. The prepared samples were characterized with the X-ray diffraction (XRD) method in combination with Rietveld structure refinement, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and vibrating sample magnetometery (VSM). The XRD patterns confirmed the formation of crystalline spinel structure for all samples. However, the diffraction peaks of hematite and iron vanadium oxide phases were observed in the patterns of some doped samples. The average crystallite size for all the synthesized samples was found to be in the range of ~45–24 nm, implying that it decreased by simultaneously doping cobalt ferrite with Zn and V. The FT-IR spectrum confirmed the formation of the spinal structure of ferrite through the observed vibrational bands assigned to the tetrahedral (υ2) and octahedral (υ1) interstitial complexes in the spinel structure. The FE-SEM images showed that morphology, average grain size, and agglomeration of the synthesized powders were affected by doping, which was due to the interactions of the magnetic surface of nanoparticles. The VSM curves demonstrated that saturation magnetization and coercivity values changed in the range of 30–83 emu/g and from 27–913 Oe, respectively. These changes occurred due to the alteration in cation distribution in the spinel structure. This can be attributed to the change in superexchange interactions between magnetic ions by co-substitution of Zn and V ions in Cobalt ferrite and the changes in magnetocrystalline anisotropy.

Effects of p-d orbital mixings on magnetocrystalline anisotropy for D3d-symmetric ferromagnetic semiconducting monolayers.

Understanding magnetic anisotropy based on electronic properties is vital for theoretical and applied research on ferromagnetic semiconductors. Here, for several representative D3d-symmetric ferromagnetic semiconducting monolayers, we investigate the effects of mixings between d-orbitals of central magnetic atoms and p-orbitals of ligands on magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE). For high-spin materials, the weakening of p-d mixing increases the electron occupation of spin-up bonding d-orbitals at the expense of the electron occupation in the corresponding spin-down orbitals, In contrast, the weakening of p-d mixing decreases the electron occupation of the spin-up antibonding d-orbitals and enhances the electron occupation in the corresponding spin-down orbitals. The weakening mixings also result in an overall shift of the spin-down band toward a higher energy with respect to the spin-up band. These changes are just the opposite in a low-spin material. More interestingly, we find that the transition point between the bonding and the antibonding spin-up bands plays a significant role in tuning the MAE. Its shift with strain is almost linearly related to the p-d bond strength and significantly affects both the electron occupation of occupied spin-up antibonding d-bands and the band shift of unoccupied spin-up d-bands. Furthermore, the correlation of these mixing-related changes in electronic structures with the MAE is qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed. Our findings can deepen the understanding of the correlation between MAE and p-d orbital mixings and provide theoretical guidance for modulating the MAE.

Suppressing antiferromagnetic coupling in rare-earth free ferromagnetic MnBi-Cu permanent magnet

Rare-earth free, ferromagnetic MnBi shows a positive temperature coefficient of coercivity from room temperature to 400 K and energy product (BH)max of 17.7 MGOe at 300 K. However, MnBi undergoes a first-order structural phase transformation from a ferromagnetic low-temperature phase (LTP) to a paramagnetic high-temperature phase at 613 K below the Curie temperature (Tc) of 716 K. The transformation is attributed to Mn diffusion into the interstitial site of LTP MnBi unit cell. Interstitial Mn antiferromagnetically couples with the Mn at lattice 2a site, lowering the magnetization. Cu-occupied bipyramidal sites are investigated as a possible means to suppress Mn diffusion into the bipyramidal sites using first-principles calculations based on the density functional theory. Saturation magnetization, magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant (K), and Tc of (Mn0.5Bi0.5)100−xCux (x = 0–33) are reported. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy changes to the out-of-plane direction (x = 13) from the in-plane direction (x = 0.0). Tc decreases gradually to 578 K at x = 33 from 716 K at x = 0.0. The calculations show a slightly lower (BH)max of 15.6 MGOe while it is expected that Cu-occupied interstitial sites will significantly suppress Mn diffusion and raise the temperature of the phase transformation.

Preparation and orientation mechanism analysis of (BiTm)<sub>3</sub>(GaFe)<sub>5</sub>O<sub>12</sub> magneto-optical single crystal film with out-of-plane orientation

Liquid-phase epitaxy (LPE) is one of the best techniques for the preparation of single crystal garnet films. However, the specific Faraday rotation angle of Yttrium iron garnet (YIG) is small, and its easy magnetization axis is parallel to the film surface. The YIG requires a large external saturation field, which cannot meet the development needs of magneto-optical devices. It is found that Bi-substituted YIG(Bi:YIG) film has a larger specific Faraday angle. By adjusting the easy magnetization axis of Bi: YIG perpendicular to the film surface, the saturation magnetization of Bi: YIG can be reduced, so that it can work under a small external magnetic field. This meets the development needs of miniaturization and energy saving of magneto-optical device. The saturation magnetization of garnet film can be effectively reduced by substituting Ga<sup>3+</sup> for YIG crystal, mainly for Fe<sup>3+</sup> at the 24d position of its tetrahedron. And the lattice constants of Gd<sub>3</sub>Ga<sub>5</sub>O<sub>12</sub> (GGG) and YIG are 1.2383 nm and 1.2376 nm, respectively. However, the radius of Bi<sup>3+</sup> (10.8 nm) is larger than that of Y<sup>3+</sup> (9.0 nm), the lattice mismatch of garnet film increases with the incorporation of Bi<sup>3+</sup>. In order to neutralize the lattice expansion caused by Bi<sup>3+</sup>, Tm<sup>3+</sup> (8.69 nm) with a radius smaller than that of Y<sup>3+</sup> (9.0 nm) is selected. Based on the theoretical analysis of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of garnet film, (BiTm)<sub>3</sub>(GaFe)<sub>5</sub>O<sub>12</sub> mono-crystalline films with different growth temperatures and different thickness values are grown by LPE on GGG (111) substrates. The experimental results show that when the thickness of epitaxial film is greater than 1 μm, the influence of shape anisotropy on magnetocrystalline anisotropy can be ignored. With the increase of growth temperature, the substitution number of Bi<sup>3+</sup> ions decreases gradually, the lattice constant of epitaxial film decreases gradually, and the lattice mismatch first decreases and then increases. Then, the state of compressive stress gradually changes into that of tensile stress. Compared with growth-induced anisotropy, the stress-induced anisotropy is dominant in the change of magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The Verdet constant of (BiTm)<sub>3</sub>(GaFe)<sub>5</sub>O<sub>12</sub> film is 11.8 × 10<sup>4</sup> rad/Tm@1064 nm. The results show that the prepared (BiTm)<sub>3</sub>(GaFe)<sub>5</sub>O<sub>12</sub> mono-crystalline films have great development potential in magneto-optical devices.

Ferroelectric-driven tunable magnetism in ultrathin platinum films

Electric control of magnetism in magnetoelectric (ME) multiferroics is expected to have a significant impact on a wide range of technological applications. Here, we predict the modulation of magnetism in ultrathin platinum films due to the ferroelectric polarization of the ${\mathrm{BaTiO}}_{3}$ substrate, which along with biaxial strain changes the density of states at the Fermi energy. We demonstrate that both the magnitude and direction of the magnetization depend strongly on the polarization direction and/or strain. This leads to an unprecedented ME effect involving a giant change of magnetocrystalline anisotropy under polarization switching due to the large spin-orbit coupling of Pt. These findings pave the way of an alternative strategy for the design of nonvolatile and ultralow power spintronics and magnetic memory storage devices.

Voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy in antiferromagnetic L10-MnPt and MnPd thin films

The efficient electrical control of the magnetic states of antiferromagnets is one of the main focus in antiferromagnetic spintronics. In this work, the voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA) effect in two representative antiferromagnets L10-type MnPt and MnPd thin films has been investigated by employing first-principles calculations. Our results indicate that both of the MnPt and MnPd films show in-plane magnetic anisotropy and the magnetic easy axis points either along [1 0 0] or [1 1 0] direction depending on the film thickness. The applied electric field in the range of −0.3 V/Å and + 0.3 V/Å (vacuum as dielectric) leads to the change of magnetocrystalline anisotropy of both films at the order of tens of μJ/m2. Especially, for MnPt film with thickness of two unit cells on Pt(0 0 1), it shows that the moderate electric field is able to switch the in-plane magnetic easy axis between [1 0 0] and [1 1 0] directions. For MnPd thin films, the VCMA effect shows generally linear dependence on the electric field and the VCMA coefficients are estimated in the range of 2.7 to 22.6 fJ/V/m. Our calculation results may stimulate future investigations on the VCMA effect of metallic antiferromagnetic films and pave the possible applications in memory device.

Rare earth ion contribution in barium hexaferrite structure to a change of magnetocrystalline anisotropy to improving its magnetic properties

Rare earth ion contribution in barium hexaferrite structure to a change of magneto-crystalline anisotropy to improving its magnetic properties has been investigated. A series of simples of Ba1-xCexFe12O19 with the variation of x (x = 0.0-0.5) were prepared by solid-state reactions using mechanical deformation techniques. The oxide materials used for sample preparation are BaCO3, Fe2O3, and CeO2 with the ratio of material used is adjusted to the stoichiometric calculation for variations of Ce4+ substitution. The phase identification results show that the reaction took place perfectly and successfully formed a single-phase Ba1-xCexFe12O19 namely at the composition x = 0 and x = 0.1. while for the composition x> 0.1, it is formed in three phases. Particle morphology in the composition x = 0 and x = 0.1 has very good and uniform particle homogeneity across the surface of the sample in the form of polygonal particles. So the substitution of Ce atoms into the barium hexaferrite structure is only able at the composition limit x = 0.1. In the composition x = 0.1 has been able to increase the coercivity and magnetization fields. It can be concluded that the permanent magnet with the composition Ba0,9Ce0.1F12O19 gives the best results.

The Effect of Pressure on Magnetic Properties of Prussian Blue Analogues

We present the review of pressure effect on the crystal structure and magnetic properties of Cr(CN)6-based Prussian blue analogues (PBs). The lattice volume of the fcc crystal structure space group Fm 3 ¯ m in the Mn-Cr-CN-PBs linearly decreases for p ≤ 1.7 GPa, the change of lattice size levels off at 3.2 GPa, and above 4.2 GPa an amorphous-like structure appears. The crystal structure recovers after removal of pressure as high as 4.5 GPa. The effect of pressure on magnetic properties follows the non-monotonous pressure dependence of the crystal lattice. The amorphous like structure is accompanied with reduction of the Curie temperature (TC) to zero and a corresponding collapse of the ferrimagnetic moment at 10 GPa. The cell volume of Ni-Cr-CN-PBs decreases linearly and is isotropic in the range of 0–3.1 GPa. The Raman spectra can indicate a weak linkage isomerisation induced by pressure. The Curie temperature in Mn2+-CrIII-PBs and Cr2+-CrIII-PBs with dominant antiferromagnetic super-exchange interaction increases with pressure in comparison with decrease of TC in Ni2+-CrIII-PBs and Co2+-CrIII-PBs ferromagnets. TC increases with increasing pressure for ferrimagnetic systems due to the strengthening of magnetic interaction because pressure, which enlarges the monoelectronic overlap integral S and energy gap ∆ between the mixed molecular orbitals. The reduction of bonding angles between magnetic ions connected by the CN group leads to a small decrease of magnetic coupling. Such a reduction can be expected on both compounds with ferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic ordering. In the second case this effect is masked by the increase of coupling caused by the enlarged overlap between magnetic orbitals. In the case of mixed ferro–ferromagnetic systems, pressure affects μ(T) by a different method in Mn2+–N≡C–CrIII subsystem and CrIII–C≡N–Ni2+ subsystem, and as a consequence Tcomp decreases when the pressure is applied. The pressure changes magnetization processes in both systems, but we expect that spontaneous magnetization is not affected in Mn2+-CrIII-PBs, Ni2+-CrIII-PBs, and Co2+-CrIII-PBs. Pressure-induced magnetic hardening is attributed to a change in magneto-crystalline anisotropy induced by pressure. The applied pressure reduces saturated magnetization of Cr2+-CrIII-PBs. The applied pressure p = 0.84 GPa induces high spin–low spin transition of cca 4.5% of high spin Cr2+. The pressure effect on magnetic properties of PBs nano powders and core–shell heterostructures follows tendencies known from bulk parent PBs.

Magneto-volume effect and magnetic properties in DyFe12−xTax compounds

Abstract The structural and magnetic properties of DyFe12−xTax compounds (with x = 0.5, 0.6, 0.65 and 0.7) have been investigated in detail using dc magnetization, differential scanning calorimetry, Mossbauer effect spectroscopy (5–300 K) and high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction (10–700 K). The easy magnetization directions at room temperature are along the c-axis. With decreasing temperature, the magneto-crystalline anisotropy changes from easy axis at room temperature to easy cone at Tsr2 for all compounds, then to easy plane at Tsr1. Both Tsr1 and Tsr2 change significantly over the ranges 158–216 K and 239–259 K with increasing Ta content (x = 0.5–0.7) respectively, while the Curie temperature is found to remain essentially unchanged with a value of ∼540 K. Pronounced magneto volume effects have been detected at the Curie temperature while no clear anomalies are observed around the spin reorientation temperatures. Large spontaneous magnetostriction has been detected below TC for all of the compounds.

Flipping anisotropy and changing magnetization reversal modes in nano-confined Cobalt structures

Abstract We investigate the temperature dependent magnetic properties of arrays of Cobalt nanowires created by sputtering Co on two separate nanoporous anodized alumina (AAO) templates each with pores of diameter 50 nm and 10 nm. We observe differences in the easy axis of magnetization for the two nanowire arrays and a flip in the easy axis at low temperatures. The easy axis of 50 nm nanowire array at room temperature is found to be perpendicular to the nanowire long axis, whereas for 10 nm arrays the easy axis is parallel to the wire axis. With lowering of temperature, however the easy axes of both arrays orient away from that at room temperature. Along with that the saturation magnetic field and coercive field show sudden increase in their values at low temperatures, accompanied by a crossing over seen in the saturation magnetic fields. We propose changes in magneto-crystalline anisotropy of cobalt present in the nanowires as a result of the stress developed in the nanowire array due to the alumina template, with lowering of temperature. We support our experimental results with micro-magnetic simulations done to generate the M(H) curves and study the magnetization reversal processes in the nanowire arrays with varying anisotropies. With lowering of anisotropy which we believe is triggered by stress at low temperature, our simulations show magnetic vortex like instabilities originating in the nanowires. We suggest the possible modes of domain reversals: curling in 50 nm and either coherent rotation or buckling in 10 nm nanowires through our simulations. Our results suggest that temperature can serve as an effective tool to tune magnetic anisotropy in Co nanowires embedded in AAO and generate unusual magnetic textures.

Structural and Magnetic Studies of Thermally Treated NiFe2O4 Nanoparticles

The heat treatment of nanoparticles can have a direct effect on their particle sizes, which, in turn, can influence many of their structural and magnetic properties. Here, we report the effect of sintering temperature on the chemically synthesized high-quality NiFe2O4 nanoparticles. The structural studies show the formation of pure NiFe2O4 nanoparticles with the space group $$ Fd{\bar{\text{3}}}m $$ . The inverse spinel structure was also confirmed from the lattice vibrations analyzed from Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra. The presence of strong exchange interactions was detected from the temperature-dependent magnetization study. Moreover, at higher sintering temperatures, the grain growth due to fusion of several smaller particles by coalescing their surfaces enhances the crystallinity and its magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Coercivity and saturation magnetization were found to depend significantly on the sintering temperature, which was understood in the realm of the formation of single-domain-like structure and change in magnetocrystalline anisotropy at higher sintering temperatures.

Magnetic properties of thin films of samarium-cobalt alloy prepared by magnetron sputtering

We examine the magnetic properties of samarium-cobalt thin films on quartz and Si(111) substrates grown by dc magnetron sputtering. Both films are deposited on Cr buffer layer and subsequently a capping layer of Cr was also deposited. Secondary ion mass spectroscopy results reveal that Cr diffused in to Sm-Co layer.This lead to local change in magnetocrystalline anisotropy. As the result of this we observed the two coercive behaviors in magnetization of thin film.

Structural, thermal and magnetic studies of MgxZn1−xFe2O4 nanoferrites: Study of exchange interactions on magnetic anisotropy

Polycrystalline nanoferrites with chemical formula MgxZn1−xFe2O4 (x=0.5, 0.6, 0.7) have been synthesized by co-precipitation technique and then subsequently heated to 800°C in order to investigate structural, thermal and magnetic properties. The samples are characterized by using XRD, FTIR, TGA-DSC, SQUID and Mössbauer spectroscopy techniques. The synergic effect of heat treatment with substitution of Mg2+, results in random variation of lattice parameter (a) and crystallite size (D). FTIR studies revealed the formation of cubic spinel structure. The broadening at octahedral bands for compositions x=0.6 and 0.7 attributes to distribution of ferrite particles of different sizes in these samples. The characteristic feature of hysteresis loops reflects the nature of ferrite particles in the state of superparamagnetism. The saturation magnetization at room temperature has been reported for composition x=0.7 is 44.03emu/g. The variation of coercivity is due to variation in magnetic anisotropy which is predominately affected by the exchange interactions arising from the nature of nanoparticles. The blocking temperatures are in the range of 10–30K and their variation is in the line of change in magnetocrystalline anisotropy but not due to variation in crystallite sizes. The Zeeman splitting at tetrahedral (A) and octahedral (B) sites for composition x=0.6 is expected due to increase in size of core of the nanoparticles/or increasing of magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The range of isomer shift values and quadruple splitting values are evident for the presence of Fe3+ ions and the absence of Fe2+ ions in the present systems. The present ferrite nanoparticles in the superparamagnetic state are the potential candidates for biomedical applications like cancer treatment through hyperthermia. The results are interpreted in terms of cation redistribution presuming exchange coupling energy variation on magnetocrystalline anisotropy.

Possible evidence for a spin-state crossover in the Verwey state inFe3O4thin films

In epitaxial thin films of magnetite a large change in magnetization across the Verwey transition has been observed. In the Verwey state, the sample magnetization appeared to be strongly reduced, in some samples even close to zero. Using superconducting quantum interference magnetometry, x-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy, and polarized neutron reflectometry, a simple rotation of the magnetization vector due to a change in magnetocrystalline anisotropy was excluded. The experimental data rather suggest an intrinsic loss of magnetic moment due to a possible transition into a low or intermediate spin state of ${\mathrm{Fe}}^{2+}$. This observation discloses a different aspect of the Verwey transition.

Large anisotropic deformation of skyrmions in strained crystal.

Mechanical control of magnetism is an important and promising approach in spintronics. To date, strain control has mostly been demonstrated in ferromagnetic structures by exploiting a change in magnetocrystalline anisotropy. It would be desirable to achieve large strain effects on magnetic nanostructures. Here, using in situ Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, we demonstrate that anisotropic strain as small as 0.3% in a chiral magnet of FeGe induces very large deformations in magnetic skyrmions, as well as distortions of the skyrmion crystal lattice on the order of 20%. Skyrmions are stabilized by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, originating from a chiral crystal structure. Our results show that the change in the modulation of the strength of this interaction is amplified by two orders of magnitude with respect to changes in the crystal lattice due to an applied strain. Our findings may provide a mechanism to achieve strain control of topological magnetic structures based on the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction.

Size effect on the magnetic properties of oleic acid stabilized substrate free BiFeO3nanocrystals

We report here on the unique synthesis of BiFeO 3 (BFO) nanocrystals of different size by using oleic acid as a capping agent and investigate the structural and magnetic properties. Oleic acid is found to be a good stabilizing agent to obtain different crystal size and distributions of BFO nanocrystals. Structural characterizations by X-ray diffraction (XRD) reveal the phase purity of all the samples. The BFO nanocrystals display strong size dependent magnetic properties showing increase in both magnetization ( M s ) as well as in coercive field ( H c ) with decreasing the crystal size due to the size confinement effect as well as change in magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The smallest BFO nanocrystal of size ~12 nm shows remarkably high (8.17 emu/g) magnetization value compared to previous reports. The results obtained here will be of immense important for advanced applications in electromagnetic devices.

Anomalies in magnetoelastic properties of DyFe11.2Nb0.8 compound

The structural and magnetic properties of DyFe11.2Nb0.8 compound have been investigated by high intensity, high resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction, ac magnetic susceptibility, and dc magnetization measurements as well as Mössbauer spectroscopy (5–300 K). The easy magnetization direction at room temperature is along the c-axis. With decreasing temperature, the magnetocrystalline anisotropy changes from easy-axis to easy-cone at Tsr2 (∼202 K), then to easy plane at Tsr1 (∼94 K). The thermal expansion coefficient obtained from the synchrotron x-ray study exhibits clear anomalies around both of the spin reorientation transition temperatures. The 57Fe hyperfine interaction parameters and magnetic moments values have been determined for the 8i, 8j, and 8f sites from the Mössbauer spectra.

Phase formation, magnetic properties and Raman spectra of Co–Ti co-substitution M-type barium ferrites

In this paper, Co–Ti ions co-substituted M-type barium ferrite materials [Ba(CoTi)xFe12−2xO19, x = 1.15, 1.20, 1.25 and 1.30] were synthesized by solid-state reaction method. The ferrites, with sintering at 1,200 °C for 4 h, all exhibit the single phase M-type barium ferrite structure. However, there are obvious differences on properties among different amounts of Co–Ti substitution, basing on the same phase formation of M-type barium ferrites. With x increasing from 1.20 to 1.25, magnetic properties, including saturation magnetic flux density (Bs), residual magnetic flux density (Br), initial permeability (μα), saturation magnetization (Ms), coercivity (Hc) and Q-factor, have an obvious change. This is attributing to that Co and Ti occupancies at different sites in the barium ferrite crystalline structure bring the change of magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The appropriate content of Co–Ti substitution makes the magnetocrystalline anisotropy transform from uniaxial to planar anisotropy. Meanwhile, this difference also is confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. The spectra are recorded from 200 to 3,200 cm−1 in the room temperature. The occupancy of Co2+ and Ti4+ ions on the Fe3+ sites causes difference in intensity and Raman bands, which also corroborate the changes of Co–Ti occupation and magnetocrystalline anisotropy from another perspective.
