Spatiotemporal investigation of geochemical and hydrological controls on release of soluble reactive phosphorus from the shallow aquifer of a riparian zone.

Phosphorus (P) that accumulates in agricultural riparian zones can be released under certain hydrological and biogeochemical conditions, thereby limiting the effectiveness of these zones in reducing P loads from field to stream. The study objective was to explore factors that may be contributing to, or limiting, high soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) concentrations in the shallow aquifer of an alluvial upland riparian zone located in a continental climate. Field investigations including porewater sampling from six vertical nests, soil sampling, and continuous soil moisture, groundwater table, and redox measurements were conducted over 19 months. Porewater SRP concentrations were generally low in the aquifer considering all sampling times (median=14.7µg/L; interquartile range [IQR]=11.1µg/L, 287 samples). The overall low SRP may be due to low reducible labile soil P (median=21.1 µgP/g dw, IQR=10.9 µgP/g dw, 21 samples). However, high SRP concentrations(>52µg/L, 95% quartile) did occur intermittently in space and time with no clear spatial or temporal patterns. Analyses indicate that most high concentrations were likely not associated with factors previously reported to influence SRP release in riparian aquifers, including redox conditions, pH, and soil drying and wetting. Further, data indicate that internally released or externally supplied SRP may undergo rapid (re-) sequestration within the aquifer, limiting its vertical or horizontal transport. The study findings highlight the complexity of P behavior in riparian zones and the need for caution when assessing the effectiveness of conservation practices and in interpreting potential impacts of subsurface water quality on stream water quality when monitoring locations are distant from the stream.

Microbial interactions strengthen deterministic processes during community assembly in a subtropical estuary

Systematic studies on the assembly process and driving mechanisms of microbial communities in estuaries with diverse seasonal and spatial scales are still limited. In this study, high-throughput sequencing, and microbial network analysis were combined to decipher the impact of environmental changes and biological interactions on the maintenance of microbial diversity patterns in the Jiulong River Estuary (JRE). The results showed that overall, stochastic processes dominated the bacterioplankton community assembly in the estuary, accounting for 49.66–74.78 % of the total. Additionally, bacterioplankton community diversity varied significantly across seasons and subzones. Specifically, the concentration of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) in the estuary steadily reduced from winter to summer, and the corresponding bacterioplankton community interactions gradually shifted from the weakest interaction in winter to the strongest in summer. The deterministic processes contributed more than half (50.34 %) to microbial assembly in the summer, but only 25.22 % in winter. Deterministic processes prevailed in the seaward with low SRP concentrations and strong bacterioplankton community interactions, while stochastic processes contributed 70.14 % to the assembly of microbial communities riverward. Biotic and abiotic factors, such as nutrients and microbial interactions, jointly drove the seasonal and spatial patterns of bacterioplankton community assembly, but overall, nutrients played a dominant role. Nevertheless, the contributions of nutrients and microbial interactions were equivalent in spatial assembly processes, albeit nutrients were the primary seasonal driver of the bacterioplankton community assembly process. This study emphasizes the significance of microbial interactions in the bacterioplankton community assemblage. These findings provide new and comprehensive insights into the microbial communities' organization in estuaries.

Cyanobacterial organic matter (COM) positive feedback aggravates lake eutrophication by changing the phosphorus release characteristics of sediments

Phosphorus is a key nutrient that causes eutrophication in lakes. Our investigation of 11 eutrophic lakes found that the concentrations of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) in the water column and EPC0 in sediments decreased with aggravated eutrophication. There was a significant negative correlation between the SRP concentrations and eutrophication parameters such as chlorophyll a (Chl-a), total phosphorus (TP) and algal biomass (P < 0.001). In addition, SRP concentrations were significantly affected by EPC0 (P < 0.001), while EPC0 was significantly affected by the content of cyanobacterial organic matter (COM) in sediments (P < 0.001). Based on these findings, we hypothesized that COM can alter the phosphorus release characteristics of sediments, including the phosphorus adsorption parameters of sediment (PAPS) and the phosphorus release rate of sediment (PRRS), thereby stabilizing SRP concentrations at lower levels and rapidly replenishing them when depleted by phytoplankton, which in turn benefits cyanobacteria due to their low SRP adaptation strategies. Simulation experiments were conducted to confirm this hypothesis by adding higher plant OM and COM to sediments. The results showed that all types of OM could significantly increase the maximum phosphorus adsorption capacity (Qmax), but only COM could reduce sediment EPC0 and promote PRRS (P < 0.001). Changes in these parameters (i.e., Qmax, EPC0, and PRRS) resulted in a larger SRP adsorption quantity and faster SRP release rate at low SRP concentrations. This promotes the competitive edge of cyanobacteria due to they have a higher affinity for phosphorus than other algae. As an important component of cyanobacteria, EPS can change the phosphorus release characteristics (i.e., PAPS and PRRS) by reducing sediment particle size and increasing sediment surface functional groups. This study revealed the positive feedback effect of COM accumulation in sediments on lake eutrophication from the perspective of phosphorus release characteristics of sediments, which provides a basic reference for the risk assessment of lake eutrophication.

Higher Levels of Soluble Reactive Phosphorus Promote Labile Organic Nitrogen Cycling in Subsurface Coastal Waters

AbstractRemineralization of labile organic nitrogen is a key part of nitrogen cycling in seawater, yet factors controlling this process remain poorly understood. The degradation and fate of amino acids in coastal waters were investigated with incubation experiments using 15N‐labeled alanine (Ala). The cycling of Ala, including the release of NH4+ through remineralization, the subsequent removal of NH4+ via assimilation and nitrification, and the formation of refractory dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), was more rapid in subsurface (mid‐depth 8 m and bottom 17 m) than in surface coastal waters (2 m) of the northern Gulf of Mexico in summer. This pattern is attributed to the different levels of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) observed at different depths of the water column. The addition of orthophosphate to the surface water with low SRP (&lt;0.1 μmol L−1) significantly accelerated the remineralization of amino acid, nitrification, and the formation of refractory DON. The rapid remineralization of amino acid and further nitrification in SRP‐replete waters are linked to the rapid growth of heterotrophic bacteria and ammonia‐oxidizing archaea, respectively. Taken together, these results suggest that subsurface coastal waters enriched with SRP are pre‐primed for rapid organic N metabolisms, providing mechanistic insights into nitrogen cycling in marine waters.

Didymosphenia geminata blooms are not exclusively driven by low phosphorus under experimental conditions

Despite two decades of research, the cause of blooms of the diatom Didymosphenia geminata remains uncertain. Blooms have been associated with low nutrient, oligotrophic streams. In this study, we used available data from across the globe and conducted experiments to determine how D. geminata responds to soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) concentrations. Globally, D. geminata blooms have been found in streams with SRP below 11 μg P l−1. In North America, blooms only occurred at high equivalent latitudes when SRP was very low, whereas at lower latitudes blooms were observed under higher SRP concentrations. Using an in situ experiment, we found that following physical removal of D. geminata from stones, regrowth did not occur despite low SRP concentrations. In a second experiment, we found that there were no differences in D. geminata growth between a treatment which depleted SRP and a treatment which maintained elevated springtime SRP levels. These findings indicate that D. geminata blooms do not always form when SRP is low, even when cells are present. Bloom formation that is not exclusively related to low SRP suggests additional chemical or biotic factors, specific physical conditions, a seasonal timing requirement, or some combination of these with low P that are necessary to produce blooms.

Environmental effects by introducing Potamogeton crispus to recover a eutrophic Lake

Re-establishing submerged vegetation is considered an important tool to restore shallow eutrophic lakes. A whole year comparative field study was performed in a eutrophic lake and its connected pond with Potamogeton crispus in order to determine the effects of the growth and senescence of submerged macrophytes on structure of phytoplankton. P. crispus improved the water quality at the growing season in terms of improving transparency, decreasing total phosphorus, soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) and chlorophyll a concentrations and slowering turnover rate of dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP). Meanwhile, dominant species shift from Chlorophyta to Diatom. Notably, senescence and decomposition of P. crispus in late spring resulted in an abrupt increase of DOP, providing a suitable growing environment for Euglena and dinoflagellates and a Peridiniopsis bloom occurred owing to their advantage in utilizing DOP. Peridiniopsis excreted phosphatase as evidence by simultaneously in situ enzyme labelled fluorescence (ELF) labelling and main alkaline phosphatase activity contributed by large particles, suggesting that the dominance of dinoflagellate with low SRP is enabled by its ability to efficiently hydrolyze DOP. Under the scenario of worldwide application of re-establishing submerged vegetation, our results provide the evidence of the negative environmental effects that occurred when transplanting P. crispus to recover a eutrophic lake.

Characteristics of dissolved organic phosphorus inputs to freshwater lakes: A case study of Lake Erhai, southwest China

In this study, we made the first estimate of the annual dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) load to Lake Erhai, a typical mesotrophic–eutrophic lake in China.We also evaluated what proportion of DOP was bioavailable using enzymatically hydrolyzable phosphorus (EHP), and further assessed the potential impacts of DOP on lake water quality. We estimated that the annual DOP load into Lake Erhai accounted for nearly 50% of total dissolved phosphorus, while EHP accounted for about 30% of the bioavailable phosphorus (BAP) pool. The DOP load increased and accounted for a greater proportion of total dissolved phosphorus and BAP loads during the wet season, and helped maintain algal blooms. Inflowing rivers were the main source of DOP with high bioavailability to Lake Erhai, especially in the wet season. The EHP concentrations of the inflowing rivers were positively correlated with algal biomass. The observation suggests that, as a significant source of BAP, the contribution of the DOP load to eutrophication of the lake should not be ignored, especially given the low soluble reactive phosphorus concentrations in the lake water during the algal biomass period. Information on the contributions from different pollution sources is needed to support the development of effective P pollution control strategies. Short-term strategies to protect Lake Erhai include better management of the inflowing rivers, especially in the northern part during the wet season, while, over the long-term, strategies to decrease P release from lake sediments should be considered.

Regional distribution and temporal changes in density and biomass of Didymosphenia geminata in two Mediterranean river basins

This study aimed to strengthen the knowledge of Didymosphenia geminata distribution in Spain, and to determine which environmental variables were related to its regional distribution and temporal changes in growth and production in two Ebro River tributary basins (Iregua and Najerilla¸ La Rioja Region). Living cells of D. geminata were present in 40% of the studied sites of both basins but only four of the sites developed massive growths. The diatom is widely distributed only in mountain areas of both basins (above 690 masl), which have low average annual air temperature (8.27 ± 0.28 oC) and low water Soluble Reactive Phosphorus (SRP) concentration (average value 0.024 ± 0.007 ppm). Massive growths occur in sites with high light intensity, hydrological regulation of river flow and the lowest measured SRP concentrations (below 0.018 ppm SRP). We carried out an intensive spatio-temporal survey in the Lumbreras River (Iregua basin), where the first massive growth was detected in La Rioja Region. The highest cell densities (1.6 × 105 cells cm−2) and biomass values (480 gDWm−2) were recorded in late summer. An increase in solar radiation and slight rise in water temperature were associated with an increase in biomass over time, but always in waters with low SRP concentration, the key factor that enhances massive growth development. The alteration of the natural streamflow in the Lumbreras River by the Pajares Reservoir and the fact that water is discharged from the hypolimnion (which decreases the summer river water temperature) are important factors in understanding why D. geminata shows such an increase in biomass in a Mediterranean river. This paper provides new insights into the importance of different factors controlling D. geminata massive proliferations in the Mediterranean climate zone, where it is assumed that the species should not develop such massive growths, compared to temperate zones where the majority of previous studies have been carried out. We suggest that changing the reservoir management strategy would be a very important contribution to the control of such significant developments.

Interannual variations in atmospheric forcing determine trajectories of hypolimnetic soluble reactive phosphorus supply in a eutrophic lake

Summary We tested the hypotheses that variability in soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) loading from the hypolimnion to the epilimnion of a small, eutrophic, temperate zone lake is significant at both interannual and subannual scales, and that this variability is influenced by changes in lake thermal structure. We calculated weekly hypolimnetic fluxes of SRP, during the stratified periods of 2008 and 2009 in Esthwaite Water, U.K., and compared them with the SRP fluxes from external sources. As a result of variations in the supply of SRP from the hypolimnion, which differed by c. 80% between years, we found a 30% difference in overall SRP loading to the epilimnion between the 2 years. Despite similarities in mean summer meteorological conditions, relatively subtle differences in weather conditions during the midsummer of only 0.7 m s−1 in wind speed and 8 W m−2 in solar radiation between the 2 years resulted in two diverging trajectories of hypolimnetic SRP loading. In the first year, there was a high thermal lake stability of 102 J m−2 on average, and a relatively shallow epilimnion until the late summer, giving rise to prolonged deep‐water anoxia and a large accumulation of SRP that was mixed into the surface waters at the end of the summer. In contrast, 30% lower thermal stability and 20% deeper epilimnetic mixing in the second year resulted in the arrest and early decline of deep‐water anoxia and SRP accumulation, leading to lower SRP fluxes to the epilimnion. Understanding this meteorologically driven variability in SRP supply is crucial for predicting nutrient loading in lakes. It is likely to become especially relevant to lakes around the globe for which the importance of internal loading is predicted to increase due to the effects of climate change.

The Didymo story: the role of low dissolved phosphorus in the formation of Didymosphenia geminata blooms

We outline, in chronological sequence, the events and findings over 25 years that have shaped our understanding of Didymosphenia geminata (Lyngbye) M. Schmidt blooms. Starting with the first appearance of D. geminata mats in streams on Vancouver Island in the late 1980s and followed years later by blooms in Iceland, South Dakota and Poland, D. geminata blooms were enigmatic for nearly 20 years. Early papers exploring whether blooms were caused by environmental change consistently failed to identify any specific factor(s) associated with their onset. Following the D. geminata outbreak in New Zealand in 2004 that seemed to result from an introduction of the species, the possibility that blooms that had previously occurred elsewhere in the world might also be explained by the introduction and movement among watersheds of a new variant with a bloom-forming tendency was touted and widely accepted. Now, however, the identification of very low soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP; below ∼2 ppb) as the proximate cause of bloom formation, has led to the more likely explanation that D. geminata blooms are the result of large-scale human intervention in climatic, atmospheric and edaphic processes that favour this ultra-oligotrophic species. In this new view, blooms of D. geminata are not simply due to the introduction of cells into new areas. Rather, bloom formation occurs when the SRP concentration is low, or is reduced to low levels by the process of oligotrophication. Mechanisms that potentially cause oligotrophication on global and regional scales are identified.

Elevated Dissolved Phosphorus in Riparian Groundwater along Gaining Urban Streams

Findings of low concentrations of dissolved phosphorus in groundwater in large surveys [e.g., United States Geological Survey's National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program ( Dubrovsky, N. M.; et al. The Quality of Our Nation's Water: Nutrients in the Nation's Streams and Groundwater, 1992-2004 . U.S. Geological Survey Circular 1350; USGS : Reston, VA , 2010 . ); >5000 wells] support the common perception that groundwater is generally of little importance for transporting phosphorus. Here, we address whether this applies to urban riparian settings, where discharging groundwater may potentially contribute to urban stream syndrome and downstream eutrophication problems. This survey study includes 665 samples of groundwater collected along gaining stream reaches at six urban sites. Considering the combined sample set, 27% had soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) concentrations >0.1 mg L(-1), which is more than double that determined in the NAWQA Program (12%), while for individual sites the range was 12-52%, excluding one site with consistently low SRP (0%). None of the sites showed significant correlation between SRP and the artificial sweetener acesulfame, a promising wastewater indicator, including two with known wastewater contamination (but the lowest SRP). Rather, high SRP concentrations were associated with geochemically reducing conditions. This could mean that natural aquifer or stream sediment materials were a primary contributor of the elevated SRP observed in this study.

Limitations of using extracellular alkaline phosphatase activities as a general indicator for describing P deficiency of phytoplankton in Chinese shallow lakes

Extracellular phosphatase can be produced by phytoplankton to utilize organic phosphorus under phosphorus (P) deficiency. However, there is a controversy about its use as an indicator of P deficiency in natural phytoplankton community inferred by such an "induction-repression" mechanism. Size-fractionation of alkaline phosphatase activity (APA), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) concentration, algal density, and composition were determined in six Chinese shallow lakes ranking in gradient of trophic status, where a positive relationship between SRP concentration and algal density was observed. Enzyme-labeled fluorescence (ELF) method was used to localize phosphatase on cell membrane of algae. The so-called algal APA that associated with coarser particle (> 3.0 A mu m) accounted for the largest part of total APA. Within a lake with lower SRP concentration, the "induction-repression" mechanism held true. Contrastingly, both algal and total APA were positively related to SRP concentration based on the data across all study lakes with statistical significance, which may be explained firstly by algal composition. The lakes with higher SRP concentration were dominated by diatoms and green algae, while they easily produced extracellular phosphatases as evidenced by ELFA labeling. In parallel, the lakes with lower SRP concentration were dominated by cyanobacteria, while it was never ELFA-positive; secondly, ELFA-positive dots or structures suggested that, in lakes with higher trophic status, attached bacteria or heterotrophic microorganisms could substantially contribute to extracellular phosphatases for hydrolyzing organophosphoric compounds but probably utilizing the organic moiety as an organic carbon source. This process simultaneously produces inorganic P, leading to the co-occurrence of high phosphate concentration and APA. So, the contributor of APA are complex, which may produce extracellular phosphatase species-specific or not exclusively for P nutrient and consequently make it difficult to normalize APA with the exact biomass estimators. Therefore, it is not reasonable to use APA, normalized or not, as a general indicator for describing P deficiency of phytoplankton in shallow lakes especially eutrophic ones.

Phosphorus release characteristics of different trophic lake sediments under simulative disturbing conditions

The effect of simulative disturbing on phosphorus (P) release characteristics and the differences of the P buffering capacity of different trophic lake sediments were investigated. The magnitudes of the dissolved total phosphorus (DTP), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) and dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) released from the studied sediments increased with the increasing of disturbing intensity. The equilibrium time of the DTP release from the heavily polluted sediments was approximately 16 h, and that from the slightly polluted sediments was 8 h. This may be related to the difference of P forms in the different trophic sediments. About 30% of the DTP released from Wuli Lake and Yue Lake was from DOP, about 60% and 50%, respectively, was from Gonghu Lake and East Taihu Lake. DOP was the important fraction of DTP released. The effect of disturbing on P release was related to both disturbing intensity and sediment pollution level. After the disturbing stop, the DTP, SRP and DOP concentrations in the overlying water of the different sediments decreased rapidly within 3, 10 and 3 h, respectively, then gradually reached equilibrium at different time for the sediments with different pollution level. The different trophic lake sediments had different P buffering capacity, P buffering capacity of the slightly polluted sediments was lower at the initial lower SRP concentrations and was higher at the initial higher than that of the heavily polluted sediments.

Whole-stream phosphorus cycling: Testing methods to assess the effect of saturation of sorption capacity on nutrient uptake length measurements

The cycling rate of nutrients such as phosphorus (P) is a fundamental parameter in stream ecology. In whole-stream ecosystem experiments, cycling rates are often assessed using continuous short-term nutrient addition studies. While several simplifying assumptions are generally recognised, these are rarely, if ever, fully tested under field conditions. One principal assumption is that uptake (sorption) processes do not become saturated during periods of nutrient addition, which is perhaps questionable from laboratory studies of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) sorption kinetics. Three approaches were developed and tested, which bridged the gap between laboratory-based net (sum of uptake and release) sorption kinetics and whole-stream assessments of P uptake. These were applied to a short-term (three times mean travel time of water in the studied reach) whole-stream multiple-rate P addition. The results were then tested independently with a whole-stream long-term (15 times mean travel time) SRP addition. The net sorption kinetics were not altered during the short-term addition with low SRP additions, 9–16μgL−1 (two to three times the ambient concentration). Although this may not be the case at higher added concentrations (as possibly hinted at five times the ambient concentration), the long-term addition showed no change in P uptake length with a P addition (39μgL−1) 16 times higher than the ambient concentration.

MAGIC method for subnanomolar orthophosphate determination in freshwater

A freshwater magnesium hydroxide coprecipitation method (MAGIC) has been developed to accurately and reproducibly determine low (nanomolar to subnanomolar) soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) concentrations in freshwater. The method allows investigation of phosphorus distributions and cycling for systems in which SRP is below the detection limits of conventional methods. In natural waters, both inorganic and organic forms of P are coprecipitated; hence the method is essentially a preconcentration rather than a separation technique. Quantification of SRP on dissolved MAGIC precipitates follows a modified version of the standard molybdenum blue colorimetric method, using a spectrophotometer with ~0.1 milliabsorbance (mAbs) noise. Detection limit is 0.15 nM, improving on typical conventional colorimetric methods by a factor of ~50, with precision (RSD of triplicates) of ~10% at the 1 nM SRP level, 10% at ≤0.5 nM, and 4% to 7% at &gt;1 nM. Considerable method development was necessary to eliminate or correct for multiple interferences, including a novel finding of potential interference by colored dissolved organic matter, and to optimize recovery, precision, and detection limit. The method was applied to filtered, frozen samples from western Lake Superior, showing that SRP concentrations are characterized by limited seasonal variability, largely uniform vertical distribution, and near‐bottom enrichment. Concentrations ranged from 0.4 to 10.9 nM SRP, representing ~10% of the total dissolved phosphorus pool. MAGIC is an easily employed analytical method appropriate for measurement of very low SRP in lakes and rivers.

Specific affinity for phosphate uptake and specific alkaline phosphatase activity as diagnostic tools for detecting phosphorus-limited phytoplankton and bacteria

We analyzed responses of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), bioavailable phosphate (PO4), particulate phosphorus, turnover time of orthophosphate (Tt), and alkaline phosphatase activity (APA) to varying degrees of nutrient stress. The nutrient stress was evoked by different treatments in concentration and combination of inorganic nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), and labile organic carbon (glucose) to mesocosms in experiments carried out in eutrophic southern (Odense Fjord, Denmark) and northern (Tvarminne Archipelago, Finland) coastal zones of the Baltic Sea. Despite seasonal and geographical differences, similar responses were observed in both experiments. Low SRP (<100 nmol l−1), shortT t (<10 h), and increased levels of APA were observed in both N+P balanced and P deficient treatments, while the opposite trend was observed in P replete treatments. The shortestT t and the highest APA were found when glucose was combined with N treatment. Bioavailable PO4 was estimated usingT t and P uptake rates as derived from stoichiometric conversion of carbon based primary and bacterial production. With shorterT t, the PO4 pool declined to <1 nmol-P l−1, whereas the SRP background pool (difference between SRP and PO4) remained relatively constant (c. 50 nmol l−1). APA was inversely related to PO4 but not to SRP. Responses of specific APA and specific affinity for PO4 uptake, which are APA and PO4 uptake rates (inverse ofT t), respectively, normalized to the summed P biomass of phytoplankton and bacteria, responded consistently to the pattern and magnitude of nutrient limitation evoked in our experiments. Our results, together with a literature survey, suggest that both parameters can be useful in examining PO4 availability for the natural phytoplankton and bacteria community in P starved aquatic systems.

Soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) transport and retention in tropical, rain forest streams draining a volcanic landscape in Costa Rica: in situ SRP amendment to streams and laboratory studies

Soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) transport/retention was determined in two rain forest streams (Salto, Pantano) draining La Selva Biological Station, Costa Rica. There, SRP levels can be naturally high due to groundwater enriched by geothermal activity within the surfically dormant volcanic landscape, and subsequently discharged at ambient temperature. Combined field and laboratory approaches simulated high but natural geothermal SRP input with the objective of estimating the magnitude of amended SRP retention within high and low SRP settings and determining the underlying mechanisms of SRP retention. First, we examined short-term SRP retention/transport using combined SRP-conservative tracer additions at high natural in situ concentrations. Second, we attempted to observe a DIN response during SRP amendment as an indicator of biological uptake. Third, we determined SRP release/retention using laboratory sediment assays under control and biologically inhibited conditions. Short-term in situ tracer-SRP additions indicated retention in both naturally high and low SRP reaches. Retention of added SRP mass in Upper Salto (low SRP) was 17% (7.5 mg-P m−2 h−1), and 20% (10.9 mg-P m−2 h−1) in Lower Salto (high SRP). No DIN response in either nitrate or ammonium was observed. Laboratory assays using fresh Lower Salto sediments indicated SRP release (15.4 ± 5.9 μg-P g dry wt.−1 h−1), when incubated in filter sterilized Salto water at ambient P concentration, but retention when incubated in filter sterilized river water amended to 2.0 mg SRP l−1 (233.2 ± 5.8 μg-P g dry wt.−1 h−1). SRP uptake/release was similar in both control- and biocide-treated sediments indicating predominantly abiotic retention. High SRP retention even under biologically saturated conditions, absence of a DIN response to amendment, patterns of desorption following amendment, and similar patterns of retention and release under control and biologically inhibited conditions all indicated predominantly abiotic P flux.

Soluble Reactive Phosphorus Transport and Retention in Tropical, Rainforest Streams Draining a Volcanic and Geothermally Active Landscape in Costa Rica. : Long-Term Concentration Patterns, Pore Water Environment and Response to ENSO Events

Soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) transport/retention was determined at four sites in three rainforest streams draining La Selva Biological Station, Costa Rica. La Selva is located at the base of the last remaining intact rainforest transect from 30 m above sea level to 3000 m along the entire Caribbean slope of Central America. Steam SRP levels can be naturally high there due to regional, geothermal groundwater discharged at ambient temperature. Monitoring since 1988 has revealed distinctive long-term differences in background SRP and total P (TP) for three streams in close proximity, and identified the impact of ENSO (El Nino Southern Oscillation) events on SRP-enriched reaches. Mean interannual SRP concentrations (± standard deviation) were 89 ± 53µg/l in the Salto (1988–1996), 21 ± 39µg/l in the Pantano (1988–1998), and 26 ± 35µg/l in the Sabalo (1988–1996). After January, 1997 the separate upland-lowland contributions to discharge and SRP load were determined monthly in the Salto. SRP in Upper Salto was low (19 ± 8µg/l, 1997–2002) until enriched at␣the upland-lowland transition by regional groundwater. Mean SRP concentration in Lower␣Salto (108 ± 104µg/l) was typically highest February–April, the driest months, and lowest July–September, the wettest. SRP concentration was positively correlated to the inverse of discharge in Lower Salto when ENSO data were omitted (1992 and 1998–1999), but not in the Upper Salto, Pantano, or Sabalo. TP was positively correlated to the inverse of discharge in all three streams when ENSO data were omitted. High SRP springs and seeps along the Lower Salto contributed 36% of discharge but 85% of SRP export 1997–2001. Annual SRP flux from the total Salto watershed (1997–2001) averaged 2.9 kg/ha year, but only 0.6 kg/ha year from the Upper Salto. A dye tracer injection showed that pore water environments were distinctly different between Upper and Lower Salto. Upper Salto had high surface water–pore water exchange, high dissolved oxygen, low SRP, and low conductivity similar to surface water, and Lower Salto had low surface water–pore water exchange, low dissolved oxygen, high SRP, and high conductivity reflecting geothermal groundwater influence. SRP export from the Salto was controlled by regional groundwater transfer, which in similar volcanic settings could be a significant P source. However, ENSO events modified the SRP concentration in the Salto suggesting that long-term monitoring is required to understand underlying SRP dynamics and P flux to downstream communities.

The Status and Characteristics of Eutrophication in the Yangtze River (Changjiang) Estuary and the Adjacent East China Sea, China

Eutrophication has become increasingly serious and noxious algal blooms have been of more frequent occurrence in the Yangtze River Estuary and in the adjacent East China Sea. In 2003 and 2004, four cruises were undertaken in three zones in the estuary and in the adjacent sea to investigate nitrate (NO3-N), ammonium (NH4-N), nitrite (NO2-N), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), dissolved reactive silica (DRSi), dissolved oxygen (DO), phytoplankton chlorophyll a (Chl a) and suspended particulate matter (SPM). The highest concentrations of DIN (NO3-N+NH4-N+NO2-N), SRP and DRSi were 131.6, 1.2 and 155.6 mu M, respectively. The maximum Chl a concentration was 19.5 mg m(-3) in spring. An analysis of historical and recent data revealed that in the last 40 years, nitrate and SRP concentrations increased from 11 to 97 mu M and from 0.4 to 0.95 mu M, respectively. From 1963 to 2004, N:P ratios also increased from 30-40 up to 150. In parallel with the N and P enrichment, a significant increase of Chl a was detected, Chl a maximum being 20 mg m(-3), nearly four times higher than in the 1980s. In 2004, the mean DO concentration in bottom waters was 4.35 mg l(-1), much lower than in the 1980s. In comparison with other estuaries, the Yangtze River Estuary was characterized by high DIN and DRSi concentrations, with low SRP concentrations. Despite the higher nutrient concentrations, Chl a concentrations were lower in the inner estuary (Zones 1 and 2) than in the adjacent sea (Zone 3). Based on nutrient availability, SPM and hydrodynamics, we assumed that in Zones 1 and 2 phytoplankton growth was suppressed by high turbidity, large tidal amplitude and short residence time. Furthermore, in Zone 3 water stratification was also an important factor that resulted in a greater phytoplankton biomass and lower DO concentrations. Due to hydrodynamics and turbidity, the open sea was unexpectedly more sensitive to nutrient enrichment and related eutrophication processes.

Role of river bed sediments as sources and sinks of phosphorus across two major eutrophic UK river basins: the Hampshire Avon and Herefordshire Wye

The Equilibrium Phosphorus Concentration (EPC 0) of river bed sediments has been measured for a wide range of agricultural subcatchments and main river sites across two major eutrophic river basins: the Hampshire Avon and Herefordshire Wye catchments, to examine whether bed sediments are acting as sources or sinks of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) under low flows and times of greatest eutrophication risk. A conceptual reach-based model of interactions between bed sediment and river water has been used to estimate relative differences in bed-sediment SRP flux transfers. In this model, processes of SRP uptake and release are assumed to occur within an operationally defined 0.1 m river water ‘boundary layer’ and the uptake and release of SRP is assumed to be driven by a differential between the EPC 0 of the sediment and SRP concentration in the boundary layer. Most of the river monitoring sites in the Wye and Avon catchments had elevated SRP and boron (B) concentrations in the water column at low flows, linked to sewage effluent discharges. At these sites, bed sediments consistently acted as net sinks for SRP, demonstrating the role of bed sediments in riverine ‘self-cleansing’ mechanisms. In contrast, bed sediments were found to act as net sources of SRP under three circumstances: (i) where there was minimal sewage influence (in headwater streams of the Avon), (ii) where sewage inputs were subject to large hydrological dilution by water of low SRP concentration (in the main River Wye), (iii) where EPC 0 values were relatively high, as a result of deposition of particulates with high exchangeable P concentrations from diffuse sources or from effluents (immediately downstream of sewage treatment works (STWs)). Under baseflow conditions, high SRP concentrations from sewage effluent in the tributaries appear to ‘swamp out’ any potential release of SRP from the bed sediments. For rivers that are subject to effluent P-stripping, reductions in SRP in the overlying water could potentially result in changes to the in-stream P-cycling mechanisms, with bed sediments possibly switching from net sinks to net sources of SRP. This feature is of potential importance in relation to environmental management and phosphorus mitigation operations.
