Study on protection and sustainable inheritance of Fujian Tubao: A case study of Fuxing Bao in Yong’an City

Fujian Tubao, a defensive residential structure predominantly found in central Fujian, represents a significant cultural heritage of the region. However, with the rapid urbanization underway, Fujian Tubao faces the threat of extinction, presenting severe challenges to its survival and development. Identifying a sustainable development path for Fujian Tubao is crucial for preserving regional culture. This study uses Fuxing Bao, a quintessential example of Fujian Tubao, as a case study to explore conservation methods based on adaptive reuse. Through field surveys, questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and case studies, we analyze the historical background of the building, focusing on the current physical and social environment of Fuxing Bao. Our findings indicate that the current state of preservation of Fuxing Bao can meet the requirements for adaptive reuse. By integrating results from surveys and interviews with local villagers, we propose sustainable development strategies and conservation methods. This research offers a sustainable development model for Fujian Tubao and other traditional regional dwellings. By adopting an adaptive reuse perspective, it aims to better address the conflict between modern living and traditional architectural preservation, ensuring that these architectural spaces are properly protected and continue to play a unique role in contemporary society.

A case-control study on risk factors for visceral leishmaniasis in West Pokot County, Kenya.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a severe parasitic disease transmitted by phlebotomine sandflies. VL is endemic in West Pokot County, Kenya, where effective strategies to interrupt transmission are impeded by the limited understanding of VL risk factors. Therefore, this case-control study aimed to explore environmental, behavioural and household determinants of VL in West Pokot. From November 2022 to January 2023, a structured questionnaire was administered to 36 symptomatic primary VL cases attending Kacheliba Sub-County Hospital in West Pokot and to 50 healthy controls from local villages. The VL status of all participants was confirmed using an rK39 rapid diagnostic test. Associations between questioned determinants and VL were investigated by means of age-corrected univariate logistic regression analysis. Significant associations were found between VL and housing characteristics, such as window presence and floor type. VL cases more frequently reported the presence of cattle, dogs and sheep in their house yards. VL was also associated with cutting down trees in the house yard and house proximity to several Acacia tree species. Furthermore, outdoor activities, including travelling outside the residence for more than 2 weeks, activities near termite mounds, and forest activities during the rainy season, increased the risk of VL. This work reports a number of previously undescribed risk factors for VL in the understudied West Pokot focus. The results suggest VL transmission occurs both peri-domestically at night and outdoors during the day, particularly when sandfly resting sites are disturbed. Our findings warrant further research into sandfly ecology and potential zoonotic parasite reservoirs in West Pokot.

The legal system in Indonesia is based on colonial, ethnic and religious law. This regulation forms the basis for all court decisions, including general courts, state administrative courts, and religious courts. As for the problems: 1) How is the process for implementing jurors based on article 103 of the Republic of Indonesia Law Number 7 of 1989 concerning Religious Courts at the Bangli Regency Religious Court office? 2) What are the inhibiting factors for adversity in handling cases at the Bangli Regency Religious Court office? The purpose of this study is to understand the implementation of jursita based on article 103 of Law No. 7 of 1989 concerning the Religious Courts at the Bangli District Religious Court and to understand the supporting and inhibiting factors of slump at the Bangli Religious Courts, to then find a solution. This study uses empirical methods. Empirical method used by the writer based by the data obtained by the writer from those people whom directly connected with the case matters written on the subject of this study. The bailiff must comply with the direction of the Chief Justice and submit announcements, reprimands, and court decisions in accordance with statutory provisions. If the parties do not provide accurate information, bailiffs may experience difficulties in carrying out their duties. However, they can still be informed about subpoenas by the local village head.

From case study to general principle: An analysis of the development mechanism and policy optimization of mangrove carbon sinks

Mangroves, as a crucial coastal ecosystem, possess significant carbon sink functions and play a key role in mitigating global climate change. This paper, based on the Zhanjiang Mangrove Afforestation Project in Guangdong, explores the development mechanisms and economic and ecological benefits of mangrove carbon sink projects through the lens of collective action theory and system dynamics modeling. The study finds that the primary reason for the unsustainable progression of mangrove carbon sink projects is the lack of intrinsic motivation among local villagers to engage in collective action. By constructing a system dynamics model, this paper quantifies the long-term impacts of mangrove carbon sink projects on local socio-economic welfare and proposes policy optimization recommendations. These recommendations include expanding income sources for local villagers, establishing carbon trading and ecological compensation mechanisms, and involving international non-governmental organizations. The findings of this study not only provide guidance for mangrove carbon sink projects in China but also offer valuable insights for the promotion of similar projects globally.

The Influence of Geographical Conditions on Flood Disasters in Tunggul Irang Ilir Village

Natural disasters such as floods can be caused by both natural and non-natural factors, such as human activities. The convergence of human activities, static environmental conditions, and dynamic natural phenomena can result in flooding. Static natural elements (topography, rivers, and geographical conditions) and dynamic natural factors (rainfall, tidal currents, land subsidence, and river sedimentation) are the causes of flooding disasters. Tunggul Irang Ilir Village is a village located in the Martapura District of Banjar Regency that experiences flooding every year. It is known that the floods in Tunggul Irang Ilir Village involve several factors, primarily due to the village's geographic conditions, making the area prone to flooding disasters. Therefore, research is conducted on the geographical conditions' impact on flooding in Tunggul Irang Ilir Village to understand the village's geographical conditions and their influence on the floods that occur annually. Using a qualitative descriptive research method, data is collected through documentation, interviews, and observation. Data analysis involves stages such as data reduction, data presentation, conclusion drawing, and verification. This research employs data triangulation, technique triangulation, and time triangulation to test validity. The results of the research indicate that geographic conditions, including the village's location, climate, weather, low land topography, and Martapura River overflow, are factors causing floods in Tunggul Irang Ilir Village.

Pemanfaatan Olahan Labu Kuning untuk MPASI sebagai Pencegahan Stunting pada Anak Balita

Gunung Mas District, Central Kalimantan Province, has serious concerns about stunting, with prevalence remaining high at both national and local levels. Stunting, as an indication of chronic malnutrition, requires effective interventions to improve this condition. One strategic effort is through the provision of nutritious complementary foods, with pumpkin as a potential local ingredient. Previous studies have shown that pumpkin is high in nutrients and effective in improving the nutritional status of toddlers. Universitas Palangka Raya, through the UPR 2024 Regular KKN Period I team, conducted education in Belawan Mulia Village to increase the local people's knowledge and skills on pumpkin-based complementary feeding. Implementation methods included education to the local people's forum and village institutions, along with the provision of complementary foods. The program results showed that the use of brochures and stickers were effective in spreading the information. The program succeeded in increasing the local people's knowledge, changing their feeding behavior, and contributing to the reduction of stunting and improvement of children's nutritional status.

Analysis of the Role of Tourism Awareness Group Communication in Developing Tourism Destinations Based on Local Wisdom in Tipang Village, Baktiraja District, Humbang Hasundutan Regency, North Sumatra Province

This research aims to analyze the communication role of the tourism awareness group in Tipang village by prioritizing local wisdom in developing tourism destinations, analyzing the strategies of tourism awareness groups applied in developing tourism destinations, and finding the obstacles experienced by tourism awareness groups in developing tourism destinations based on local wisdom. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a phenomenological paradigm. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies. The validity of the data was checked by triangulating interviews with the Lake Toba Authority Implementing Agency (BPODT) and academics who had carried out tourism development activities at the research location. Response of Four O’clock Flowers (Mirabilis jalapa L.) to the Short Length of Illumination (Photoperiodism)

Long photoperiods can delay flower initiation and slow down the formation of flower primordia, so they can delay flowering. This study aims todetermine the photoperiodism response of four o'clock flowers (Mirabilis jalapa L.) to the short length of irradiation. The research was carried out for 3months (April-June 2024) and specifically data collection was carried out on 8 June 2024 in Bulurejo village, RT.03 RW. 04, Karangmojo, Weru District,Sukoharjo Regency, Central Java. From 05.53 WIB to 17.30 WIB. Samples of 15 plants growing in Bulurejo village, observed when the flowers bloom. Datawere analysed descriptively qualitative and combined with literature studies. The results of research on 15 plants of four o'clock flower (Mirabilis jalapa L.),the same species and location of four o'clock flower blooming turned out to be different times even though the difference was only slight. The average time ittakes to bloom is 10 hours 42 minutes. Further research needs to be done with a variety of different flowers, not only red flowers, but plus white, red andmixed colours with varied village locations, especially at differentaltitudes.Four o'clock flower (Mirabilis jalapa L) is a member of the family Nyctaginaceae, order Centrospermae, and is easy to grow in the yard withoutmuch care.

Cultural sources of gender gaps: Confucian meritocracy reduces gender inequalities in political participation

The historical oppression of women in China mirrors the experiences of women in many other cultures. During the imperial era, Confucian ideologies and institutions played a significant role in perpetuating women's disenfranchisement. This perception has become deeply entrenched, to the extent that contemporary discussions on women's status often automatically refer to lingering Confucian legacies as one of the obstacles to achieving gender equality. However, this study offers a nuanced perspective by shedding light on how certain aspects of Confucianism, notably meritocracy, may serve to empower modern-day women. The research focuses on the Chinese context, particularly the historically significant Confucian-based meritocratic institution known as the civil examination system (keju). I argue that historical meritocratic legacies can have a lasting impact on contemporary behavior, specifically by reducing the gender gap in political participation in local village elections. Using data from historical archives and the China General Social Survey, I find a negative correlation between a prefecture's historical success in the keju exams and the gender gap in village election turnout among present-day respondents. Further exploratory analyses reveal that the enduring Confucian tradition of meritocracy also empowers other low-status social groups, including the economically disadvantaged and the less educated.

Towards growth-driven environmentalism: The green energy transition and local state in China

China is recognised as the leading country in the green energy transition. Different from the literature that emphasises the role of the powerful central state, this article reveals how China's green energy strategies and policies can also be reshaped by local dynamics. Based on ethnographic research in 2022 and interviews with local officials and villagers, this article interrogates the building of ‘the world's largest desert photovoltaic (PV) power base’ in Dalad, an Inner Mongolian county in northwest China. The article makes two arguments. First, the base project should be seen as a product of what I term ‘growth-driven environmentalism’, which characterises the local state's mediation between the top-down energy strategies and the bottom-up developmental needs. Second, while the base project may be viewed as a successful climate action in its own right, it obscures the concurrent acceleration of coal-based industrial growth and entrenches the energy-based development model in Dalad. This article offers a theoretical contribution to our understanding of the role of the local state in reconstructing and reshaping the green energy transition, alongside the powerful central state, and suggests that understandings of the global green energy transition must step past the macro picture to understand what is on the ground.

Tourism Village Management In Building The Local Economy Through Community Partnerships

Tourism village management is an important strategy in exploiting local tourism potential to help develop the economy at the local village level. In this context, partnerships between village governments, local stakeholders and communities play a key role in optimizing the economic benefits of the tourism industry. This research aims to investigate the role of tourism village management in strengthening the local economy through community partnerships. Using a qualitative approach, data will be collected through interviews, observations and documentation studies in the Mangli Tourism Village. It is hoped that the research results will provide a deeper understanding of the factors that influence the effectiveness of tourism village management in improving the local economy, as well as evaluating the impact of community partnerships on economic development at the village level. This research is expected to provide an important contribution to the development of sustainable tourism management policies and practices, as well as provide insight for village governments, non-government organizations and other related parties in efforts to strengthen the local economy through sustainable and inclusive tourism village management.

Exploring the West African forest island phenomenon: scientific insights gained, successes achieved and capacities strengthened.

Anthropogenic activities around local villages in mesic savanna landscapes of West Africa have resulted in soil improvement and forest establishment outside their climatic zones. Such unique 'forest islands' have been reported to provide ecosystem services including biodiversity conservation. However, the science underpinning their formations is limitedly studied. In 2015 and with funding support from the Royal Society-DFID (now FCDO), we set out to investigate the biogeochemistry of the forest islands in comparison with adjacent natural savanna and farmlands across 11 locations in Burkina Faso, Ghana and Nigeria. Our results showed that the forest islands do not differ significantly from the adjoining ecosystems in soil mineralogy implying that their formation was anthropogenically driven. We observed greater soil organic carbon and nutrient distributions in the forest islands, which also had more stable macro (>500 μm) and meso-aggregates (500-250 μm) than the adjoining agricultural lands. We found that soil micro-aggregate (250-53 μm) stability was climate (precipitation) driven in the West African ecosystems while meso- and macro-aggregate stability was land-use driven. In one of the unique forest islands we studied in the Mole National Park of Ghana, we found its mineral-associated organic carbon over 40% greater than the adjoining natural savanna with potential implications for the achievement of the global initiative of the '4p1000' in West Africa. We conclude that the North-South-South research collaboration has established clearly, the science underlying the age-long West African forest island phenomenon and has, among many successes, led to capacity building of young scientists driving cutting-edge research in climate change adaptation and food systems transformation in the sub-region.

Customary Land Tenure and Landless Farmers in Java, Indonesia: The Challenges and Prospects for Sustainable Development

Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the tenurial system of customary land in Java, its deficiency, the accompanying consequences on land access, and the identification of modes of improvement in order to accelerate rural development. Theoretical framework: This study was based on theories of rural development and decentralization, with a specific focus on landless farmers. Method: This study employed qualitative method to analyze the tenurial system of customary land in Java. Data were collected through two steps, first, observations, interviews, and documentaries were conducted to understand the realities of customary land tenure from the descriptive statistics and narratives of local officers. Second, a focus group discussion involving local officers and villagers was held to present the initial findings, formulate a new tenancy system, and analyze the possibilities of its application in village administration. Results and conclusion: Based on the villages in the Grobogan District of Central Java Province, this study showed that land use causes unequal access to landless farmers. The land management methods to finance village development programs are currently irrelevant in the framework of recent decentralization. A system that can benefit landless farmers is contract farming. Implications of research: This study provided evidence-based information for policymakers to improve the use of customary land for landless farmers and an additional reference for rural development in the world. Originality/value: Studies on Indonesian rural development have shown the strategic position of customary lands in Indonesia, especially in Java. However, little is known about the potential of customary lands to achieve sustainable rural development, as this issue is still inadequately addressed in the literature. This led to the implementation of this study, with the objectives of analyzing the tenurial system of customary land in Java, its deficiency, and accompanying consequences on land access, alongside identifying improvement approaches in order to accelerate rural development.

Comparative analysis of water quality index and river classification in Kereh River, Penang, Malaysia: Impact of untreated swine wastewater from Kampung Selamat pig farms.

The Kereh River in Penang, Malaysia, has faced severe pollution for over 40 years due to untreated wastewater from swine farms in Kampung Selamat, discharged via stormwater drains. Despite official claims that all 77 swine farms treat their wastewater to meet regulatory standards, local non-governmental organizations and villagers have challenged this, though their concerns lack scientific backing. This study evaluates the river's water quality by analyzing samples from upstream (US), midstream (MS), and downstream (DS), and from Parit Cina-Parit Besar, a conduit for untreated swine wastewater. Fourteen parameters were measured against Malaysia's National Water Quality Standards (NWQS). Significant differences were found in six parameters: ammonium nitrogen (AN), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved oxygen (DO), total suspended solids (TSS), and oil and grease (OG). While Dunn's post hoc pairwise comparison showed no significant differences among river segments, mean values indicated increased pollution downstream, particularly after the convergence with untreated swine wastewater. River classification worsened, with water quality index dropping from 69.88 ± 11.37 score (Class III) US to 38.49 ± 12.74 and 50.44 ± 3.14 scores (Class IV) MS and downstream, respectively. A significant positive correlation between E. coli and AN (r = 0.71, p < 0.01) suggests a common point source pollutant, particularly the untreated swine wastewater. The river exhibits low oxygen levels and high organic matter and nutrient concentrations, especially MS and downstream, highlighting substantial ecological and public health risks. Effective enforcement of waste treatment regulations and enhanced monitoring are crucial for mitigating pollution and restoring the river's ecosystem. Collaboration between authorities and pig farmers is essential to improve water quality and maintain the river's ecological balance. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Severe Kereh River pollution: Untreated swine wastewater from Kampung Selamat pig farms, primarily via Parit Cina-Parit Besar, has degraded the river for over 40 years. Regulatory non-compliance: Despite official claims, untreated swine wastewater continues to pollute the river, challenging regulatory standards. Significant pollution indicators: Elevated levels of AN, BOD, COD, DO, TSS, OG, and E. coli signal severe pollution midstream and downstream. Water quality index drop: WQI scores classify midstream and downstream sections as polluted, indicating worsening conditions downstream. Urgent need for action: Enforcing regulations, improving wastewater treatment, and relocating pig farms are crucial for restoring the Kereh River.

The Real Work Lecture was held in Padukuhan Tilaman, Wukirsari Village, Imogiri District, Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region Province. For 4 weeks and 3 days starting from 05 February to 06 March 2024. Padukuhan Tilaman is the padukuhan chosen to be the padukuhan for KKN purposes by group 5 from Cokroaminoto University Yogyakarta. The abundant village potential is one of the main objectives of implementing KKN to improve the quality of Human Resources (HR) in processing and developing the potential of local villages. KKN begins with a village observation process to see the potential of villages that will be targets in implementing KKN. The programs are designed sequentially starting with discussions between KKN groups, village officials and local communities, especially those that have direct contact with the programs being designed. The implementation of the KKN program is carried out in a balanced manner starting with planning, implementation and evaluation at the end of each program. The results achieved from the entire KKN program include developing community skills and helping develop Human Resources (HR) to increase the potential of local villages. In the field of education, namely tutoring programs both academically and religiously based, are implemented to develop quality human resources from an early age. Apart from that, in the religious sector, namely the empowerment of mosques and TPAs. In the environmental sector, making a plan of Tilaman hamlet. In the legal field, namely the dissemination of hoax news to the local community. In the economic sector, namely socialization about how to save and socialization of digital marketing to local MSMEs in Tilaman Hamlet, Imogiri District, Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region Province.

Improving Ecotourism and Msmes Competence Through Ecotravel and Local Business Boost In Puhu Payangan Village, Gianyar

This study aims to identify the potential challenges faced by Puhu Village, Payangan District, and Gianyar Regency in efforts to develop a tourism-based economy and empower MSMEs in the local village. Puhu Village is one of the villages in Bali that has abundant natural and cultural wealth but has yet to be fully utilized optimally. This study uses a qualitative approach with field observation methods, in-depth interviews, and secondary data analysis to collect relevant information. The study results indicate that Puhu Village has great potential in developing nature-based tourism sectors, such as agrotourism and ecotourism, supported by natural beauty, local wisdom, and local traditions. However, several challenges must be overcome, including a lack of supporting infrastructure, minimal promotion, and low community participation in tourism activities. This study recommends improving infrastructure, training for local communities, and more effective MSME promotion strategies to support economic development in Puhu Village. With proper management, the potential of this village can be developed sustainably and provide economic benefits to the local community without ignoring aspects of environmental and cultural preservation.

Identification and validation of novel breed-specific biomarker for the purpose of village chicken authentication using genomics approaches

Local village chicken, or "Ayam kampung" as it's known in Malaysia, is considered a premium chicken breed with a higher price than other chicken breeds. As a result of their comparable appearances and sizes, colored broiler chickens are often sold as village chickens, which is a form of food fraud that can result in a 3- to 4-fold rise in profit. Therefore, developing a breed-specific authentication method is crucial for preventing food fraud in the poultry industry. This study aims to investigate the genetic diversity of village chickens from other commercial chicken breed populations available in the market (broiler [Cobb], colored broiler [Hubbard], and layer [DeKalb]) to identify breed-specific DNA fragments as biomarkers for village chicken authentication. The Whole-genome sequencing and mutation calling of 12 chickens (3 chickens/breed) led to the identification of a total of 73,454,654 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) and 8,762,338 insertion and deletions (InDel) variants, with more variants detected in the village chicken population (6,346,704 SNPs; 752,408 InDels) compared to commercial breeds. Therefore, this study revealed that village chickens were more genetically variable compared to other breeds in Malaysia. Furthermore, the breed-specific genomic region located on chromosome 1 (1:84,405,652) harboring SNP (C-T) with high discrimination power was discovered and validated which can be considered as a novel breed-specific biomarker to develop a method for accurate authentication of village chickens in Malaysia. This authentication method offers potentialw applications in the chicken industry and food safety.

Music Form and Performance Techniques of Bayu Folk Songs

Bayu folk songs, rooted in the cultural heritage of the Chongqing, Guizhou, and Hunan regions in China, embody the essence of local identity and tradition. This study aimed to investigate the musical form and performance techniques of Bayu folk songs, offering insights into preserving and transmitting cultural heritage within educational contexts. Through interviews and observations conducted with 14 key informants from diverse backgrounds, including inheritors, local villagers, cultural center leaders, and relevant experts, the research examines the cultural preservation, musical diversity, and transmission challenges of Bayu folk songs within educational settings. The study’s results are based on a thematic analysis of qualitative data collected through structured interviews and observation forms. These findings show how vital Bayu folk songs are for building community identity, keeping culture alive, and passing it down from generation to generation. The research underscores the importance of developing standardized guidelines, increasing access to educational resources, and fostering collaboration between academic institutions and cultural stakeholders to promote the preservation and transmission of Bayu cultural heritage within educational settings.

Kasus Ikhtilath di Kabupaten Pidie: Tinjauan Terhadap Strategi Penyelesaian

The research method used to understand the mechanism of resolving cases of ikhtilath in Pidie District is qualitative research with direct data collection in the field. The results of the research show that cases of ikhtilath are not directly handled by the local village or sub-district authorities, but are handed over to the competent authorities because the perpetrators of ikhtilath often come from outside the area. This is done to ensure that the cases are resolved in accordance with the law and to deter the perpetrators and other members of the community. The mechanism for resolving cases of ikhtilath in Pidie District involves a legal process according to Qanun No. 6 of 2014. This process involves several parties, such as investigators, prosecutors, judges, and witnesses at the scene. Despite challenges such as limited resources and minimal budget, efforts are made to prevent ikhtilath through tighter security, family supervision, and community outreach. The sanctions imposed on perpetrators of ikhtilath are in accordance with existing regulations, but the lack of community participation in prevention and the shortage of PPNS investigators are inhibiting factors in handling these cases.
