Diminished Chinese feminine monstrosity: the transformation of femininity and monstrosity from Chinese game Gujianqitan 3 to its fanfiction

ABSTRACT Chinese videogames and fandoms have emerged as significant arenas for the representation, reproduction, and contestation of femininity. This article delves into the portrayal of a female monster in the Chinese single-player role-playing game Gujianqitan 3 and explores how fans recraft this representation in their fanfiction. The videogame introduces a female monster, Yun Wuyue, playable in select scenes. Her representation aligns with Kristeva’s abjection, but it goes beyond Creed’s the monstrous-feminine, frameworks frequently invoked in discussions of female monsters. By drawing connections to other Chinese folklores, classic literary works on monsters, and the monstrous-feminine, the article introduces a novel construct – Chinese feminine monstrosity. This term emphasizes that the monstrosity of female monsters does not originate from their exaggeratedly sexualized bodies, but rather from their beautiful human disguises, deceitful and lethal tendencies, and their transformative bodies that evoke abjection. However, Yun’s Chinese feminine monstrosity is diminished in both the game narratives and gameplay due to Yun’s free choice of allying with men, rendering her less of a threat to the patriarchy. Fanfiction further reinforces this disempowerment by stripping of her monstrosity, transforming it into a manifestation of postfeminism. This transformation is elucidated in the context of the burgeoning influence of postfeminism in China, established fanfic conventions, and players’ understandings of representation in the game and their wishes to inherit this representation in their fanfics. Thus, the article contributes to the ongoing discourse on the transformation of ideologies in game fanfiction, shedding light on the complex interplay between representation, empowerment, and cultural shifts.

SCOPE AND FLIGHT IN LITERARY IMAGES OF OUR TIME: METAMORPHOSES OF THE IDEA

The article is dedicated to the analysis of the idea of flight in fiction and the scope it provides for the representation of a person’s real vision or the symbolic designation of psychological states and understanding. The interpretation of one’s perspective as a personal quality and a property of space or time is also considered. The comparison of literary works is focused on the expressive approach аin the scholarly heritage of the 20th-century outstanding philosophers and aestheticians M. Bakhtin and A. Losev. The novel Aviator by Evgeny Vodolazkin, a representative of modern Russian prose, is analyzed in detail. The ideas and interpretations of flight in the works of R. Bach, A. de Saint-Exupery, and other famous writers of the past century are compared. The dependence of the destinies of those who strive for flight on the historical turns of their time is demonstrated. The main value of the concept of flight for these authors lies in the breadth of human horizons, in the “vigilance of the heart” and “touch to the soul.”

Automatic authorship attribution in Albanian texts.

Automatic authorship identification is a challenging task that has been the focus of extensive research in natural language processing. Regardless of the progress made in attributing authorship, the need for corpora in under-resourced languages impedes advancing and examining present methods. To address this gap, we investigate the problem of authorship attribution in Albanian. We introduce a newly compiled corpus of Albanian newsroom columns and literary works and analyze machine-learning methods for detecting authorship. We create a set of hand-crafted features targeting various categories (lexical, morphological, and structural) relevant to Albanian and experiment with multiple classifiers using two different multiclass classification strategies. Furthermore, we compare our results to those obtained using deep learning models. Our investigation focuses on identifying the best combination of features and classification methods. The results reveal that lexical features are the most effective set of linguistic features, significantly improving the performance of various algorithms in the authorship attribution task. Among the machine learning algorithms evaluated, XGBoost demonstrated the best overall performance, achieving an F1 score of 0.982 on literary works and 0.905 on newsroom columns. Additionally, deep learning models such as fastText and BERT-multilingual showed promising results, highlighting their potential applicability in specific scenarios in Albanian writings. These findings contribute to the understanding of effective methods for authorship attribution in low-resource languages and provide a robust framework for future research in this area. The careful analysis of the different scenarios and the conclusions drawn from the results provide valuable insights into the potential and limitations of the methods and highlight the challenges in detecting authorship in Albanian. Promising results are reported, with implications for improving the methods used in Albanian authorship attribution. This study provides a valuable resource for future research and a reference for researchers in this domain.

Poetic Expression of Gay Lexicon Conveyed through Imagery in Lines of Poems

The focus of this study revolves around gay literature, specifically the poetics related to homosexuality. Gay literature includes literary works authored by individuals who identify as gay, as well as literary works by heterosexual writers that explore or discuss homosexual themes, and literary works that incorporate gay terminology. While there have been recent studies on gay literature and works, there has been a lack of attention given to gayspeak, which can be referred to more formally as a lavender lexicon, being incorporated into texts or selections that are thought to have literary significance. The study seeks to address how gayspeak is depicted in literature. Are there poetic elements present in texts that use gayspeak? The study seeks to determine the potential impact of homosexual poetics or gay speak on the advancement of literature and the teaching of literature, particularly about its literary qualities. The study utilized a limited selection of only two poems due to the scarcity of available poetry incorporating gay language. Every poetry in the collection is accompanied by translations in Filipino and English, which accurately convey the original phrases written in gayspeak. The poems were assessed based on their poetic substance and the extent to which the language used in the poem's lines demonstrates literary qualities, which is the study's primary objective. The analysis of these poems involved the application of established theories and research, such as Shklovsky’s concept of Defamiliarization (2004) and the Imagery and Symbolism concept by Dimalanta and Abad (2003). Gay language in poetry has literary qualities, conveying meaning through imagery. It enhances comprehension of a poet's work and creative process. Studying imagery provides insight into the poet's production and interpretation of the text, whether written in standard or specialized language.

Exploring linguistic and cultural barriers in literary translation: an analysis of undergraduate students' strategies and challenges in translating Albanian texts into English

Purpose: Investigate the challenges undergraduate students face when translating Albanian literary texts into English, focusing on the cultural and linguistic considerations that impact the translation process and the concept of translation loss. Methodology: Qualitative analysis of the translation methods used by non-English-speaking students, examining the types of cultural loss, challenges, and solutions encountered. Data were collected by studying translated excerpts from the Albanian literary work "Prilli i Thyer" (Broken April), with attention to the strategies employed by students to address translation challenges. Findings: Students predominantly used literal translation, resulting in implicit, modified, and complete cultural losses. Key challenges included translating Albanian cultural words, idiomatic expressions, and grammatical differences. Despite these challenges, students demonstrated proficiency and versatility in literary translation, employing strategies such as adaptation, direct translation, borrowing, and omission. Implications: The findings highlight the need for enhanced cultural competence and linguistic skills in translation education. Recommendations include using Albanian-Albanian dictionaries and a deeper engagement with Albanian culture to improve translation accuracy and reduce cultural loss. Recommendations: Students should be encouraged to develop a comprehensive understanding of the source culture and to utilize creative translation solutions. Peer collaboration and feedback are also recommended to refine translation skills and strategies. Conclusion: This research contributes to the field of translation studies by shedding light on the intricacies of translating Albanian literature into English. It underscores the importance of cultural sensitivity and linguistic proficiency in producing accurate and culturally resonant translations, ultimately fostering a more interconnected and diverse literary world

Retelling: a New Genre or an Insufficiently Investigated “Old” Notion?

The article focuses on the phenomenon known as “retelling”. The mass reader, both domestic and foreign, perceives retelling as one of the neterature genres. The word “retelling” is borrowed from the English language. According to the English-language publications concerning retelling, in modern mass consciousness this concept corresponds, on the one hand, to the methods of borrowing and processing plots, known in European culture since antiquity, on the other, to a system of primary and secondary features, reproduced in mass literature texts. However, neither American nor British literary criticism knows such a genre. Foreign literary critics use the term “adaptation”, which implies one type of the text transformation: from a literary work to a theatrical production or film. Russian researchers apply the term “adaptation” to the alterations of classical literature for theatre, cinema, television and computer games. Although in the English language culture retelling is perceived as a new, recently emerged phenomenon, the first authorʼs adaptations of classical works appeared at the beginning of the 19th century. The collection of stories “Tales from Shakespeare”, written by Charles and Mary Lamb can be considered the first example of a “retelling” adaptation. The “Preface” to the stories contains the principles, formulated by the authors. According to the given principles they reworked Shakespeareʼs plays for childrenʼs reading. These principles fall under both the concept of “retelling” and the concept of “adaptation”. The research shows that though “retelling” is perceived as one of the characteristic features of modern culture, this phenomenon existed as a conscious way of creative working with text for at least two centuries. This phenomenon is not a genre, but a set of techniques for transforming a text, a still insufficiently studied universal of literary creativity.

A Literacy Narrative in Legal Discourse of Russia

The paper elucidates the role of a literacy narrative in the construction and content of domestic legal discourse. On the basis of communicative methodology, the author examines the value aspects of the impact of the fiction on the consciousness and behavior of subjects of law and the construction of legal reality. An analysis of the literacy narrative as a collection of works of fiction having existence in a certain space-time continuum made it possible to conclude that the literary narrative is both a specific form of knowledge of legal reality and a means of influencing human consciousness and behavior in the process of legal socialization. Of all the sociocultural paradigms that mediate a person’s perception of the essence of law, not only in the legal, but also in the social sense, it is fiction that occupies the most significant place. Being a form of collective consciousness, a literary work in the process of legal communication broadcasts information about value attitudes, the implementation of which will make it possible to give the addressee’s legal behavior a purposeful character and ensure its identification with the community of which he is a member. The images of law and legal reality formed in domestic works of art are an explication of legal archetypes and broadcast the primacy of the value component of legal reality over the normative.

This paper argues that while machine translation offers convenience for basic translations, it remains insufficient for complex literary works, where cultural, emotional, and contextual understanding is crucial. A comparative analysis with a human-translated version highlights these deficiencies and suggests that human input remains essential for accurate literary translations. The findings underscore the need for improved machine learning models to address these linguistic and cultural intricacies.

Digital post/colonial feminism: Poetics and politics of digital literary activism by Arab women

ABSTRACT This article proposes digital post/colonial feminism as a viable theoretical and conceptual framework to understand and analyse Arab women’s literary resistance to patriarchal and post/colonial powers in light of the new communicational paradigm shift of digitality. It provides an interdisciplinary and contextual engagement with digital literary works to transcend monothematic approaches, considering the role of digital tools and techniques in enabling new forms of feminist literary activism. It is motivated by the absence of a robust theoretical framework that adequately encapsulates Global South women’s digital literary resistance – particularly Arab women – in the broader context of postcolonial feminism. It aspires to fill this gap by tracing Arab women’s literary resistance practices in digitality, arguing that the digital media helps female artists challenge dominant narratives, amplify marginalized voices, and reclaim collective memory. Two digital literary works by Arab women are investigated to capture their new digital aesthetics and tools of resistance.

Women’s Motivation and Constributions in Digital Literacy Activities: A Lesson from Literary Work Appreciation

Literary geography and the problem of the formation of geo-cultural texts (using the example of the Black Sea texts of Russian literature)

The article is devoted to the problem of the formation of geo-cultural texts within the framework of literary geography. An important part of literary and geographical studies is the study of geographical images presented in literary works. The concept of a geo-cultural text makes it possible to typologize literary and geographical images in relation to different geo-cultures. Local geo-cultures with a developed literary tradition usually have a number of representative geo-cultural texts that characterize the landscape and figurative features of the development of a given territory. The evolution of the Black Sea text is considered using the concepts of geo-culture and geo-cultural text. Images of the South, exoticism, and antiquity are explored as key images determining the development of the Black Sea text. Special attention is paid to the formation of interrelations between the images of the Crimea and antiquity. The marine “exoticism,” combined with the “atmosphere” of antiquity, the marginal antiquity of European culture, turned out to be the strongest emotional stimulus for the formation of both southern and Black Sea images in Russian literature. In the geo-cultural context, the “crystallization” of the Black Sea text of Russian literature takes place by the end of the 19th–beginning of the 20th century (I. Bunin, A. Kuprin). This is due to the rich landscape descriptions, which make it possible to talk about the “Black Sea aura” of these texts and the emergence of a kind of “Black Sea ontologies.” Further, the substantial core of the geo-cultural Black Sea text in the 20th century is determined by the works of M. Voloshin, O. Mandelstam, I. Babel, A. Green, K. Paustovsky, V. Kataev. Through the “crystallization” of the Crimean and Black Sea texts and the modern re-creation of its own image of “Black Sea antiquity” throughout the 20th century, Russian culture created its geo-cultural “antiquity” within the framework of the European geo-cultural space. Thanks to the work of I. Brodsky (“Roman” and “imperial” loci), the Crimean and Black Sea texts expand their semantic field, turning out to be a “node” of metaphorical assimilation, uniting the Mediterranean geo-cultural area and geo-cultural zones of influence of Russian literature.

The notion of literary genre and its realities are relativistic; they do not succeed in accounting for literary works’ singularities and similarities. Any systematic use of literary genres in criticism ends with inconsistent views of what is supposed to be the whole of literary genres. Genette’s notion of ‘architext’ illustrates this impasse. The notion of field – here translated in French by ‘domain’ and specified by the expression ‘domaine de sens’ (field of sense) – enables critics and readers to align views on singularities and similarities, to reject any systematic perspective and to outline literary works’ differences, proximities and conti nuities. The notion of ‘domaine de sens’ deprives references to constant kinds of forms/ genres of theoretical and practical usefulness. Literary works are constant because they are texts. As texts, they require no coding to be identified as literary. They just ‘appear’ to be works when they are linked to fields of sense, i.e. linked to the discourses and semantics of the place and time of their writing or reading. These discourses and semantics may include literary genres. Fields of sense are innumerous and change according to the place and time of works’ writing and reception, and each field of sense eventually comprises many works. Fields of sense explain literary works’ proximities and chains across time. Croce’s, Frye’s and McLuhan’s theses about literary genres support the aforementioned argument.

We propose to read this story as a picaresque tale with symbolic significance: the protagonist, forced to beg from birth, bears the brunt of his own mother’s monstrosity and dislike, worthy of the worst of the fairy tales. Driven by poverty, the mother takes possession of her child’s body and sculpts a deformed being that will be exhibited in the main square of Marrakech to earn a living. If the monstrous is here inseparable from the tale, it also inscribes the hero in a process of transformation made possible by intellectual (literature) and sentimental (love) learning. Thus the protagonist goes from being a simple fairground beast who flaunts his disproportionate physique for a few coins to becoming a storyteller, a fabulator, a creator of worlds. In the meantime, the tale gives way to the novel and the child, now an adult, regains a certain bodily normality, which is not a guarantee of happiness. If the marvellous is not completely evacuated, if the narrator claims a part of fantasy in his story, the novel is there to remind us that a literary work is also a reflection on the human condition of those left behind and on the alienation of the individual who must redouble his ingenuity to assert himself as a singular and independent being.
