Purpose: This paper addressed the current status and issues of e-learning in Chinese higher education during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially focusing on the infrastructure construction and technical support, the contents development and use, and the interactions between instructors and learners. Methods: The literature review and document analysis was used in this study. We analyzed a total of 29 research articles and government documents from Chinese MOE and prestige journals published between 2020 and 2021. Results: The results shown that advanced technology such as 5G and AI, diverse digital contents and creative teaching methods such as PBL and flipped classroom were put into used in universities and colleges to assist e-learning and hence learning effect through the live streaming class. Nevertheless, there remain issues on unbalanced infrastructure construction and technical support between east and west areas, limited content development and usage of e-learning, lack of effective interactions between instructors and learners. Conclusion: E-learning in Chinese higher education made notable progress despite the widespread of COVID-19. The relevant issues were also discussed to promote e-learning.
