Implementing a reading list strategy at The University of Manchester – determination, collaboration and innovation

Reading lists are a fundamental part of any programme and it is essential that libraries and academic colleagues work in partnership to ensure that universities are able to provide students with ready access to key information resources. It is generally recognized that today’s students have higher expectations than in the past, in part as a result of paying fees. At The University of Manchester 91% of 1,446 students consulted as part of an independent library survey responded that they believed the Library should guarantee them access to all the books on their reading lists. Whilst the Library at The University of Manchester tends to score very well each year in the National Student Survey, analysis of the open comments have shown that a high percentage of negative remarks about the Library have related to the lack of available core and essential texts A three-year collaborative Library-wide project (Books Right Here Right Now), involving extensive research and consultation with academic colleagues and students, resulted in The University of Manchester Library reading list strategy. The strategy seeks to ensure that Library provision of reading list material is more effective and consistent. The successful implementation of a new service to deliver on this strategy has required determination, some lateral thinking and a truly collaborative approach.

O TEATRO NA BIBLIOTECA: CLASSIFICAÇÃO E INDEXAÇÃO

Esta comunicação aborda o tratamento técnico dos documentos respeitantes ao Teatro, nas bibliotecas em geral. Pretende-se refletir sobre algumas questões relativas à descrição documental, mais especificamente a classificação e a indexação por assunto. Após um breve enquadramento, são descritos procedimentos e apresentados exemplos de instrumentos para este importante trabalho dos bibliotecários. Ilustra-se com casos retirados de catálogos de bibliotecas nacionais e estrangeiras, relacionados com a obra do dramaturgo irlandês Enda Walsh. Posto isto, questiona-se a tradição da não indexação por assunto de obras literárias, nomeadamente texto dramático, face às necessidades de recuperação da informação dos utilizadores das bibliotecas e comunidades leitoras. Conclui-se com o apelo à participação de todos (académicos, investigadores, artistas, leitores anónimos) no trabalho desenvolvido pelos bibliotecários, em prol da leitura literária e do Teatro como arte.

O čitalačkim navikama srednjoškolaca i nastavi književnosti

The introductory part of the paper discusses the changed reading habits of children and young people, conditioned by various factors - the development of modern technologies, the use of the Internet, constant reading of various content from numerous screens, changed thought patterns, accelerated time, etc. Such a context leaves little room for reading books and other printed publications, especially the so-called fine literature (fiction). For this reason, our research focus is on the attitude of high school students towards books and reading within the framework of teaching literature, and beyond, in the sphere of private life. The aim is to examine their reading habits and attitudes about books and reading in order to - by comparing the obtained data with the results of the similar research - determine the nature of the changes that have occurred in the meantime, and that new knowledge can be used to create serious, fact-based, methodological strategies for improving the current analyzed situation. The central part of the paper offers the presentation of the research conducted on a sample of 1177 students from 13 high schools in the area of the cities of Nis and Novi Pazar, conducted in late 2018 and early 2019. An anonymous questionnaire was used to collect and then interpret the data on students' family and school habits related to books and reading, their attitude towards school compulsory reading lists, libraries, e-books and online literature, as well as creativity and literature studies.

Wechat Service of University Library under the Mode of O2O Reading Promotion

This paper systematically sorts out the current situation of WeChat service in the field of university library in order to promote the orderly and indepth development of WeChat service in university library. By investigating and analyzing the Wechat service of 42 university libraries which have won the “National Reading Demonstration Base” in China, the author points out the problems in the use of Wechat service in reading promotion of University Libraries in China, such as the lack of standardization in the setting of public number, the weak interaction between WeChat public number platform readers and backstage staff, and the insufficient development of the reading promotion column on WeChat public number platform. This paper points out the development direction of university library reading promotion using WeChat public number platform. In order to provide meaningful reference for other university libraries to improve the quality of reading promotion.

Research on Aided Reading System of Digital Library Based on Text Image Features and Edge Computing

With the rapid development of library informatization level, traditional text information retrieval service methods have been difficult to meet the needs of users. Therefore, personalized assisted reading technology attracted wider attention, which can discover hidden associations by mining user information, book information, and user operation logs, and recommend the acquired knowledge to users. In order to improve the service quality and experiences of users, this paper presents a digital library assisted reading system that combines text image features and edge computing. Firstly, the digital library reading assistance system framework is proposed based on edge computing technology, which will improve the service quality and information transmission level of the digital library. And the auxiliary reading model of the digital library is presented based on text image features and RBF neural network. Detailed simulation results verify the applicability and efficiency of the proposed scheme.

“Stepka-rastrepka” in the Minutes of the Meeting of the Library Commission of the Society for the Promotion of Preschool Education (based on Materials from the Archive of the Demonstration Childhood Reading Library) The article is devoted to the publication of the minutes of the meeting of the Library Commission of the Society for the promotion of preschool education, reflecting a lively exchange of views on “Stepka-Rastrepka”. On the one hand, “Stepka-Rastrepka” was banned for a long time by teachers, who categorically refused to recognize its literary and educational value. On the other hand, professional writers and artists (A. Blok, Z. Gippius, A. Remizov, A. Benoit, A. Ostroumova-Lebedeva) spoke out in defense of “Stepka-Rastrepka” and urged not to deprive children of such fun and entertaining reading. The article also provides brief information about the activities of the Society for the promotion of preschool education and the work of its Library Commission, which discussed a wide range of issues related to literature for preschool children. The original protocols are stored in the Fundamental library of the Herzen State Pedagogical University and are available to all categories of researchers. Biblioteki akademickie w nocy – cz. 1 – doświadczenia zagraniczne

Teza/cel artykułu – Zapis 24/7 oznacza dostępność wszelakich usług świadczonych całą dobę przez siedem dni w tygodniu. w kontekście działalności bibliotecznej oznacza to jednak nie tylko możliwość całodobowego korzystania z usług bibliotecznych w rozumieniu dostępu wirtualnego, ale również permanentny dostęp do czytelni biblioteki i jej zbiorów w sensie fizycznym. Faktycznie jednak takich bibliotek, które przez większość roku otwarte są przez całą dobę, jest na świecie stosunkowo niewiele. Natomiast obserwuje się tendencję wydłużania godzin pracy bibliotek, a przodują w tym biblioteki akademickie, odpowiadając w ten sposób na oczekiwania studentów. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie doświadczeń zagranicznych bibliotek akademickich w zakresie nocnej obsługi użytkowników. Metody badań – analizie zostały poddane publikacje z zakresu organizacji i zarządzania bibliotekami, zwłaszcza prezentujące wyniki badań i analiz wykorzystania bibliotek w porze nocnej. uzupełnieniem były informacje na stronach www bibliotek akademickich dotyczące godzin otwarcia w zwykłych okresach roku akademickiego i w czasie egzaminów końcowych. Wyniki i wnioski – Badania potrzeb użytkowników i pomiary liczby odwiedzin bibliotek akademickich w godzinach nocnych zdecydowanie przekonują, że wydłużanie godzin pracy jest uzasadnione. Spadek liczby użytkowników w kolejnych godzinach nocnych jest spodziewany i oczywisty. Jednak liczba osób chcących korzystać z bibliotek uczelnianych około północy (a nawet dłużej) jest przeciętnie na tyle wysoka, że potwierdza zasadność decyzji o wydłużeniu czasu pracy w pewnych okresach roku akademickiego.

Analisa Algoritma Apriori Untuk Peminjaman Buku Pada Perpustakaan SMA 1 Silima Pungga-Pungga Parongil

ABSTRACT 
 The library has the role of helping students to love reading books. The availability of books in various fields motivates students to come to visit the library, students can read or borrow library books. For this reason, library officers apply the rules for visiting the library. The Apriori algorithm is a part of data mining, namely the search for high frequency patterns such as activities that often appear simultaneously. The pattern that will be analyzed is the pattern of borrowing any books that are often borrowed so that librarians know the information of books that are often borrowed. With the application of a priori algorithms, book data is processed to produce a book borrowing pattern. After all the high frequency patterns were found, then association rules were found that met the minimum requirements for associative confidence A → B minimum confidence = 25%. Rules for sequential final association based on minimum support and minimum confidence, if borrowing an IPA, then borrowing MTK Support = 15%, Confidence = 42.8%.

Uman public library on the pages of periodicals at the end of 19th - early 20th century

Crisis phenomena in the cultural and spiritual sphere of the modern society make it necessary to turn to the historical experience of cultural life. Coverage of the public initiative, its support by the state and the promotion of the establishment and activities of educational centers will help to rethink the experience, which will facilitate the search for ways of reviving culture, charity and enlightenment traditions. Thus, arguing the relevance of the declared theme, the authors presented information about the creation of a public library reading room in the district center of Kyiv province - the city of Uman. Having worked out the annual sets of two provincial newspapers - “Kievlyanin” (“Kyiv citizen”) and “Life and Art”, the authors systematized the materials published in them about the Uman Public Library Reading Room. The article draws attention to the multiethnic nature of Uman, because the initiators of the reading room were Jewish youth, to the difficulty of opening a reading library, which emerged as a result of the implementation of a public initiative. The sources of public reading room funding, among which donations of rich people prevailed, have been identified. Based on newspaper reports, it has been shown that the role of management in opening and maintaining a library-reading room has not been significant. It has been emphasized that the very fact of publication of materials about the Uman Public Library Reading Room on the pages of provincial newspapers, which had a large distribution area, testifies to the importance of its formation, and to the dissemination of the experience of such public initiative manifestation. The conclusions of the article summarize that the newspapers Kievlyanin and Life and Art need a comprehensive research as a source of library affairs study in the territory of Ukraine in the second half of the 19 th - early 20 th centuries, as well as cultural enlightenment in general.

Implementasi Kebijakan Literasi Sekolah Guna Peningkatan Karakter Gemar Membaca

Tujuan penelitian ini untuk menganalisis Implementasi Kebijakan Gerakan Literasi Sekolah tahap Pembiasaan untuk meningkatkan Karakter Gemar Membaca di SDN Jetak Kec Sukapura, Kab Probolinggo Jawa Timur dan untuk mengetahui faktor pendukung dan penghambat proses impelementasi. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif, di SDN Jetak Kec Sukapura, Kab Probolinggo Jawa Timur, dengan teknik pengumpulan data berupa wawancara, observasi, dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa implementasi kebijakan GLS tahap pembiasaan sudah diimplementasikan selama dua tahun. Bentuk dari implementasi Kebijakan Gerakan Literasi Sekolah tersebut adalah pembiasaan membaca siswa disetiap pagi dengan durasi 15-25menit. Kegiatan siswa berliterasi dengan membaca bacaan nonpelajaran kemudian mempresentasikanya di depan kelas. Dan juga terdapat program Literasi Digital di mana siswa bisa mengakses buku atupun cerita sesuai dengan yang mereka inginkan dengan bimbingan dari guru. Bebrapa kendala antara lain bahan bacaan yang kurang bervariasi, kurang memanfaatnya perpustakaan sekolah, minimnya sumber informasi yang didapat siswa seperti poster-poster literasi mading. solusi mengupayakan pemenuhan buku bacaan dan fasilitas perpustakaan melalui pembuatan proposal yang ditujukan kepada dinas, memanfaatkan perpustakan walaupun belum optimal.

Veteran Views of the Library: A Qualitative Study

As a user population of libraries, veterans have been a much discussed topic for the past several years. Most of the literature has focused on outreach efforts but included very little input from veterans themselves. As part of a larger project to capture veteran narratives of service, and using the Library of Congress Veteran’s History Project protocol, veterans were asked about library use and reading habits while in the service. This study sought out feedback from veterans on how they view the library, how they use the library, and what improvements or changes they would like to see in the libraries that they visit. This small study revealed several trends in how veterans viewed themselves, including being self-sacrificing for the good of the whole, being reserved about veteran status, and having a strong sense of community. The trends observed in this small sample can be used to better focus outreach efforts towards this special-needs population.

AN ANALYSIS OF FACTORS INFLUENCING LEARNERS’ IN LEARNING LANGUAGE

The aim of this research is to describe the factors influencing learners’ in learning language. This research used qualitative approach. Type of the data in this research is qualitative data that consist by collecting library data, reading, recording and processing library collection materials without need field research. This research presents scientific reasoning arguments from the result of literature review and the researcher' thinking about the problems in learning language. The library materials are discussed critically and deeply in support of discussing the factors influencing learners’ in learning language. Research result shows that there are four important factors in education process that have an influence on the process of teaching and learning language, these factors include curriculum factor, institution factor, teacher factor, teaching factor and students factor. From understanding and analysis the theory indicated that in the process of teaching and learning language as effectively category, not only focus on teacher and students factors, but also other factors have relevance and influence with each other, to achieve the learning purpose. Therefore, understanding the role and function of four factors are very important in creating an effectiveness design of learning language for learners. An understanding the creation of effective learning language process is required in order to obtain synergy and perfect preparation of all the important factors above. So, the process learning language in our educational environment will achieve the expected goals.

What citation patterns reveal about reading research and practice in academic libraries

Purpose At the turn of the twenty-first century, academic libraries revived their tradition of working with readers, which resulted in a surge of publications in this area. However, the nature and thematic coverage of these publications has not changed dramatically in the past 18 years, signaling little advancement in the reach and scope of this professional activity. This paper aims to address the following research problem: What do citation patterns reveal about reading research and practice in academic libraries and do they point to interdisciplinary research and the presence of an evidence base or do they carry a mark of an inward disciplinary orientation? Design/methodology/approach This is a qualitative exploratory study, also involving descriptive statistics, that uses bibliographic and citation analysis as a method. Findings The study discovers a disconnect between the diversity of interdisciplinary research cited in the published work on reading in academic libraries and the sameness of respective professional practices; it describes a relatively small community of reading researchers in academic libraries, emerging as leaders who can change the direction and scope of reading practices; and it highlights a preference of academic librarians for relying on interdisciplinary knowledge about reading over building on the readers’ advisory experience of public librarians. Originality/value Translating the incredible wealth of interdisciplinary reading knowledge possessed by academic librarians into practical applications promises to advance and diversify reading practices in academic libraries. One method that could aid in this effort is more intentional learning from the readers’ advisory practices of public librarians.

Christopher Clarkson’s Pioneering Work in the Development of the Conservation Book Support

ABSTRACT By developing a modular book support system for the safe handling of open books being consulted in library reading rooms Christopher Clarkson created for the first time an awareness for the necessary support of open books. He thus contributed crucial, pioneering work for the development of conservation book supports. With Clarkson's pioneering work as the starting point, the author, together with Michaela Brand, book conservator at the German Historical Museum in Berlin, researched in a multiyear project the construction of book supports for open books in exhibitions. The project was published in 2019 as a handbook on conservation book supports and supplies information about their construction, function, manufacture, and use. The large variety of conservation book supports that has been developed since Clarkson's first idea makes clear that a single book support model cannot fulfil all the requirements that arise over time and in different places for conservation book supports. Over the years countless different, functional book support models have been developed that today are available for every exhibition design and every budget. A book support is optimal when it fulfils the essential, identified requirements of its uses.

Natural Lighting System to Provide Visual Comfort in Library Reading Room at Universitas Budi Luhur, Jakarta

The general purpose of natural lighting is to produce quality of light that is efficient and minimizes direct glare, and excess light level ratios. The natural light that enters through a window can come from several sources, namely direct sunlight, clear sky, clouds or reflections of the lower surface and surrounding buildings. The light from each source varies not only from the amount and heat it carries, but also on other qualities, such as colour, spread, and savings. Light is the most important part of human life, to get the right lighting in a space, the right lighting system is needed according to people needs so that visual comfort can be achieved. The library is an important means to support teaching and learning activities and in supporting the implementation of the Three Principles of Higher Education and, the library should be the centre of attention, especially in its lighting system. This study applies a quantitative analysis method with a descriptive approach where the measurement of natural lighting levels and calculation of the dimensions of shading devices are carried out as part of the research stage. The independent variables in this study are the use of shading devices, while the dependent variables observed are natural lighting levels and natural lighting factors. The results of this study are natural lighting systems in the form of design solutions that allow it to apply in the 3rd-floor library reading room at Budi Luhur University.

Metadata for diversity

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate what metadata elements for access points currently exist to represent diverse library reading materials, either in libraries or from external sources, as well as what metadata elements for access points are currently not present but are necessary to represent diverse library reading materials.Design/methodology/approachA field scan of thirteen contemporary metadata schemas identified elements that might serve as potential access points regarding the diversity status of resource creators as well as topical or thematic content. Elements were semantically mapped using a metadata crosswalk to understand the intellectual and conceptual space of the elements. Element definitions and application of controlled vocabularies were also examined where possible to offer an additional context.FindingsMetadata elements describing gender, occupation, geographic region, audience and age currently exist in many schemas and could potentially be used to offer access to diverse library materials. However, metadata elements necessary to represent racial, ethnic, national and cultural identity are currently not present in specific forms necessary for enabling resource access and collection assessment. The lack of distinct elements contributes to the implicit erasure of marginalized identities.Originality/valueThe search for metadata describing diversity is a first step toward enabling more systematic access to diverse library materials. The need for systematic description of diversity to make visible and promote diverse materials is highlighted in this paper. Though the subject of this paper is library organization systems and, for clarity, uses terms specific to the library profession, the issues present are relevant to all information professionals and knowledge organization systems.

As práticas de letramento de crianças e adolescentes da biblioteca comunitária amigos da leitura

Neste artigo objetivamos analisar as práticas de mediação de leitura realizadas em uma biblioteca comunitária, investigando as estratégias de formação de leitores desenvolvidas. A Metodologia constou de um mapeamento das atividades de mediação de leitura realizadas na biblioteca, observações sistemáticas e entrevistas com mediadores de leitura e gestor da biblioteca. Diferentes atividades eram desenvolvidas na biblioteca: organização da biblioteca e planejamento das atividades; atividades que promovem a leitura de textos literários; outras atividades que não envolvem leitura de obras literárias. A principal ação identificada foi a de mediação de leitura, que consiste na participação e envolvimento da comunidade nas ações realizadas pela biblioteca de maneira criativa e prazerosa.

The Effective Moral Education on Early Childhood As an Effort Against Immoral Culture

Basically, effective moral education which concerns with affective aspect can prevent the immoral culture that occur around the community. The Education implemented in domiciliary, school, and society can influence and form one’s morality. The immoral culture, nowadays, that has spreaded in young generation, reflects to people’s live. The parents, the expert of education and those who concern with religion and social skill, lately, are confused with teenagers’ behaviour. They are uncontrollable, naughty, stubborn, trouble maker, immoral, brawls, drug, even piracy, rape, murder, and other abandoned acts. These problems need to be solved immediately. While theoritical moral education is not enough to overcome these such actions, but the teenagers require model as sample in their real life. This research in the form of content analysis is a series of activities relating to library data collection methods. A series of activities relating to the method of collecting library data, reading and recording and processing research materials. Data analysis in this study was carried out through a process of systematically searching and compiling data obtained. AKTIVITAS MAHASISWA DALAM MEMBACA SKRIPSI DI PERPUSTAKAAN FISIP UNS

<p>Libraries in general most people say that as a place to read and borrow library<br />collections, where the librarian or library manager provides various types of services. Services that can be said to be superior and excellent, in the library Fisip UNS contained in the reference collection service because the place is never empty by the reader. Readers in this space the average reader of scientific work, such as theses and other types of research. The purpose of writing this article to determine the activity of students in reading thesis. Activities of students in reading this paper are used to meet the information needs in the manufacture of scientific work. This research method using descriptive method. Location of the study in the library Fisip UNS. Paired-end mappability of transposable elements in the human genome

Though transposable elements make up around half of the human genome, the repetitive nature of their sequences makes it difficult to accurately align conventional sequencing reads. However, in light of new advances in sequencing technology, such as increased read length and paired-end libraries, these repetitive regions are now becoming easier to align to. This study investigates the mappability of transposable elements with 50 bp, 76 bp and 100 bp paired-end read libraries. With respect to those read lengths and allowing for 3 mismatches during alignment, over 68, 85, and 88% of all transposable elements in the RepeatMasker database are uniquely mappable, suggesting that accurate locus-specific mapping of older transposable elements is well within reach.
