The purpose of this study is to explore the future direction of liberal arts education by analyzing the trends of AI liberal arts education. The research method was keyword analysis through text mining, focusing on 41 research papers published from 2017 to May 2023. To summarize the results, first, the number of studies on A.I. liberal arts education has increased dramatically since the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020. Second, the topics of AI liberal arts education have shifted from AI literacy and software education to post-human, convergence education, and flipped learning, and since the launch of Chat GPT, ethical considerations and new curriculum development have been studied. Based on this, we suggest the following directions for university liberal arts education applying AI. First, creative convergence education should be strengthened. Second, differentiated AI education by major should be strengthened. Third, education on ethics and social responsibility should be strengthened. Fourth, various teaching and learning methods should be combined.

Transfer Learning-Based Neural Machine Translation for Low-Resource Languages

College of Liberal Arts, Ludong University, Yantai 264025, China Chinese Lexicography Research Center, Yantai 264025, China Neural Machine Translation (NMT) improves readability by augmenting sentence suggestions based on the precise likelihood of the words. The word suggestions are trained using learning paradigms through repeated translations, word searches, and user inputs. However, the challenging process is the implication of NMT for low-resource language wherein the chances of false suggestions/ word substitutions are high. So, this article proposes a Likelihood-based Machine Translation Model (LMTM) for low-resource languages. The model uses word frequency and potential substitutions from less-known sentences to identify sentences with high precision. This is achieved through a combination of recurrence and substitutions using transfer learning. The identified high-likelihood words are used for sentence augmentation, and the entire set of words from the generated sentence updates the learning paradigm. The model suggests the highest likelihood words for NMT, preventing sentence falsification and ensuring accurate translations. The proposed model increases likelihood by 9.15%, correctness by 7.46%, and substitutions by 7.7%, respectively. It reduces falsification and time complexity by 9.33% and 8.52%, respectively. Overall, the LMTM improves translation quality for low-resource languages.

Teaching Reproducible Methods in Economics at Liberal Arts Colleges: A Survey

Economics has become increasingly empirical and, alongside this shift, has come more demand for improved transparency and reproducibility in empirical economic research. In this article, we distribute a survey to almost 1500 economics faculty from the top 161 liberal arts colleges with an economics major (according to U.S. News & World Report) in the United States to determine the prevalence of teaching reproducible methods in undergraduate economics, summarize the most-common methods of instruction, and determine the intended student learning objectives. We find that of the economics faculty at liberal arts colleges who teach these reproducible methods, most do so in advanced upper-level (42%) and basic econometrics (31%) courses. Those faculty report teaching reproducibility using the following methods: transparent coding (85%), organizational skills (78%), and producing replication documentation (47%) through individual research projects (82%), homework assignments (55%), and/or workshops (33%). We conclude with some qualitative text analysis to shed light on the intended learning objectives and find that research skills (59%) and the importance of reproducibility (37%) are the most common reasons cited for teaching these methods.

Cross-sectional study on public health knowledge among first-year university students in Japan: Implications for educators and educational institutions.

In recent years, there have been increasing knowledge gaps and biases in public health information. This has become especially evident during the COVID-19 pandemic and has contributed to the spread of misinformation. With constant exposure to disinformation and misinformation through television, the internet, and social media, even university students studying healthcare-related subjects lack accurate public health knowledge. This study aimed to assess university students' knowledge levels of basic public health topics before they started their specialized education. Participants in this cross-sectional study were first-year students from medical schools, health-related colleges, and liberal arts colleges. A self-administered electronic survey was conducted from April to May 2021 at a private university in Japan, comprising six colleges with seven programs. Data analysis, conducted from June to December 2022, included students' self-reported public health knowledge, sources of information, and self-assessment of knowledge levels. Among the 1,562 students who received the questionnaire, 549 (192 male [35%], 353 female [64.3%], and 4 undisclosed [0.7%]) responded to one question (participants' response rate for each question; 59.6%-100%). The results showed that students had limited public health knowledge, especially in sexual health topics, and 10% of students reported not learning in class before university admission the following 11 topics: two on Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs; eight on Growth, Development, and Sexual Health; and one on Personal and Community Health. These results indicate significant knowledge gaps and biases, as well as gender gaps, in public health education, especially in the area of sexual health, which may help educators and educational institutions to better understand and prepare for further specialized education. The findings also suggest a need to supplement and reinforce the foundation of public health knowledge for healthcare majors at the time of university admission.

Human Subjects Research Guidelines for Undergraduate Researchers: An Analysis of Institutional Review Board (IRB) Websites at Top Liberal Arts Colleges in the United States.

Teaching students about the ethics of Human Subject Research (HSR) should be a fundamental component of students' education about research. In this article, we analyze the Institutional Review Board (IRB) websites of top-ranked Liberal Arts Colleges (LACs) to examine their framing of HSR carried out by undergraduate students. Our descriptive quantitative analysis from 50 top-ranked LACs in the United States indicates that a majority of IRB websites provide information about undergraduate research, and most include information about students' classroom-based research. Our qualitative content analysis of a subsample of ten colleges' IRB websites provides information on how they inform and educate about issues including informed consent and highlight different resources for students including their research advisor, and disciplinary standards. We conclude by discussing recommendations for IRBs in their accessibility to undergraduates.

In this regard, It will be possible to consider the direction of reflection and composition as subjects or extracurricular programs at the university liberal arts level in the future. For this study, literature data such as Julia Cameron’s Artist’s Way books and articles were comprehensively investigated. Based on this, the basic concept, purpose, tools, main contents, and use cases of Artist’s Way were presented. Through this study, specific ideas and help for understanding and implementing a self-growth program that promotes creativity for adults will be obtained.

How an Online University Librarian and a Liberal Arts College Librarian Implemented Video Tutorials during COVID-19: A Mentoring Case Study

As participants in the Association of College and Research Libraries’ (ACRL) Distance and Online Learning Section (DOLS) Mentoring Program, two librarians collaborated to deploy a pilot library video tutorial program at the mentee librarian’s small liberal arts college in the Southeastern United States. Drawing on the mentoring librarian’s experience with tutorials at their largely online university, the mentee librarian maintained instructional support and faculty engagement during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, the authors compared statistics between this pilot video tutorial program with the mentoring librarian’s more established program and discussed the benefits of the mentoring relationship for both librarians.

A Study on the Educational Needs and Perception of the Liberal Arts Core Curriculum

The purpose of this study is to explore the direction of reorganization of S University's liberal arts core curriculum by analyzing the educational needs assessment and perceptions of members inside and outside S University to foster “H+ future talents” with future capabilities to lead a diversifying society. To this end, a total of 234 internal and external members (teachers, students, graduates, and industries) of S University were surveyed on the educational needs assessment and perceptions of S University's liberal arts core curriculum. After combining the collected data with t-verification, Borich education needs, the Locus for Focus model, and frequency analysis, the current liberal arts core curriculum was reorganized in the order of ｢Computing Thinking and Coding｣, ｢Critical Reading and Writing｣, ｢EnglishⅠ(Listening & Speaking)｣, and ｢English II (Reading & Writing)｣. In addition, through a survey on the perception of the liberal arts core curriculum, the need for class options for Christian liberal arts subjects and classes by English level were confirmed. This study is meaningful in that it can be used as useful basic data for the reorganization of the liberal arts core curriculum of S University and can be a basis for the return of the direction of liberal arts education and the development of liberal arts subjects in the future.

A Study on the Case of Using ChatGPT & Learners' Perceptions in College Liberal Arts Writing

The purpose of this study is to confirm the possibility of using ChatGPT in college liberal arts writing education and to derive implications for the education field. To this end, cases of writing classes using ChatGPT were analyzed and the survey on learners' perceptions was conducted. In the liberal arts course of A university in Korea, an essay writing activity using ChatGPT was performed after subject-specific reading. A total of 62 learners decided on the guidelines related to the use of ChatGPT through discussion before writing the essay. From an analysis of the results after writing, text citation, prompt input, source verification, and revision were found, and educational implications were derived. In the subsequent survey, more than half of the learners positively recognized ChatGPT as a tool for saving writing time and improving process efficiency. It was also revealed that ChatGPT was most frequently used for idea generation and information gathering. However, learners pointed out problems concerning the quality, source, and credibility of the information. Therefore, education on the reinforcement ability to compare, contrast, judge, and synthesize information from various sources should be strengthened. In addition, clear and specific writing ethics standards and guidelines for the use of ChatGPT must be provided. This study has value as an empirical study using ChatGPT in college liberal arts writing activities.

A Typology Study of Pre-service Teachers' Perceptions of the Arts Writing Courses as Part of the Liberal Arts Education in University －Focusing on ‘Creative Writing’ of K University’

This study used the Q-methodology to categorize and examine the characteristics of pre-service teachers' perceptions of the writing course called ‘Creative Writing,’ a liberal arts writing course at K University, in order to identify the types of class perceptions of students in the Korean Language Education Department and the English Language Education Department.Based on the results of previous studies, a Q-sample was constructed and reviewed by 33 experts. The sample involved in-depth interviews with students, as well as questionnaires related to university liberal arts writing courses. 28 students of ‘Creative Writing’ were selected as a P-sample and analyzed using PQ method 2.35, and the results of the study were interpreted based on strong positive, strong negative, and identification questions in order to derive five types of perceptions related to creative writing. The fourth type of writer is the “discovery writer,” who has discovered the joy of writing itself. The fifth category is “collaborative writing strategy discovery,” where students are intrigued by the collaborative process and discover different strategies for good writing.It is hoped that these findings will serve as a foundation for the development and improvement of college liberal arts writing courses and as a way to increase the awareness of pre-service teachers when it comes to writing instruction.

Specifications Grading Is an Effective Approach to Teaching Biochemistry.

Specifications grading is a relatively recent approach to assessing student learning. In this approach, students make progress toward completion of a course by demonstrating mastery of specific skills or material. The assessment tools are short, frequent exercises that can be attempted multiple times until mastered. This contrasts with the traditional, exam-based assessment of student learning. There are multiple benefits to the specifications grading-based strategy, including reduced test anxiety, better knowledge retention, and increased flexibility. In this study, specifications grading was implemented into an upper-level biochemistry course at a private, liberal arts university. The student cohort consisted almost exclusively of junior and senior biochemistry, biology, and chemistry majors. Students earned points for demonstrating mastery on each of 12 short quizzes in addition to points earned from laboratory exercises and on the cumulative final exam. Student attitudes were assessed using three surveys that were administered at the beginning, middle, and end of the course. The survey results indicated that the students had overall favorable opinions of the specifications grading approach and its use in this course. A comparison of student performance on the quizzes to their performance on the final exam showed that the students learned and retained the course material. Combining the survey and performance data, we demonstrated that the students' perceptions of their learning correlated well with their performances on the specifications grading tools. Together, these results indicated that specifications grading is an effective approach to assessing student learning and to maintaining student enthusiasm in an upper-level biochemistry course.
