The formation of vesicles by N-dodecyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium bromide ionic liquid/copper dodecyl sulfate and application in the synthesis of leaflike CuO nanosheets

The phase behavior of the mixed catanionic surfactants in aqueous solution, composed of the long-chain ionic liquid (IL) N-dodecyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium (C12MPB) and a divalent metal surfactant copper dodecyl sulfate (Cu(DS)2·4H2O), was investigated. The phase diagram of the catanionic system was mapped through visual observation and electrical conductivity measurement. The formation of vesicles was confirmed in the lamellar phase (Lα) through transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Rheological measurements were used to study the macroscopic properties of the birefringent Lα phase. Electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions are regarded as the main driving forces for the formation of vesicles. Furthermore, the vesicles were successfully used as the templates to prepare the leaflike CuO nanomaterials.

Electrochemical synthesis of leaf-like CuO mesocrystals and their lithium storage properties

We have developed an electrochemical approach for the synthesis of leaf-like CuO mesocrystals. The oriented attachment mechanism is responsible for the formation of CuO mesocrystals. As anode materials for lithium ion batteries, the high reversible capacity and enhanced cycle performance were demonstrated.

Morphology-controlled synthesis of CuO nano- and microparticles using microwave irradiation

Microwave irradiation was used to obtain a variety of CuO crystal morphologies, including leaf-like, dandelion-like, and hollow structures. The morphology of the CuO crystals was controlled by varying the alkali source (NaOH, hexamethylenetetramine, ammonia, or urea) and heating at 95 °C for 1 hr. The X-ray diffraction patterns of as-prepared CuO crystals were consistent with high quality crystals with a monoclinic crystal structure. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and tunneling electron microscopy (TEM) images of CuO crystals revealed that the leaf-like CuO crystals had an average length of 950 nm and width of 450 nm, the small leaf-like CuO crystals had an average length of 450 nm and width of 200 nm, the dandelion-like CuO structures had an average diameter of 2 m, and the hollow CuO structures had an average diameter 2 m. Possible mechanisms for structure formation during the shape-selective CuO synthesis were proposed based on these results.

Facile Synthesis of Leaf‐Like CuO Nanoparticles and Their Application on Glucose Biosensor

AbstractAn efficient amperometric biosensor based on well‐crystallized leaf‐like CuO nanoparticles for detecting glucose has been proposed. The leaf‐like CuO nanoparticles, synthesized by a simple one‐step hydrothermal method, were characterized by X‐ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for the morphology study. Under the optimal condition, the electrochemical behaviour of the leaf‐like CuO nanoparticles modified electrode for detection of glucose exhibited high sensitivity of 246 µA/mM/cm2, short response time (within 5 s), linear dynamic range from 1.0 to 170 µM (R2=0.9995), and low limit of detection (LOD) (S/N=3) of 0.91 µM. The high sensitivity, good reproducibility, stability, and fast amperometric sensing towards oxidation of glucose, make this biosensor promising for future application.

Synthesis of core–shell microspheres of poly(methyl methacrylate)–CuO by solution deposition method

Poly(methyl methacrylate)–CuO microspheric particles with core–shell structure were synthesized by a chemical solution process within Cu(NO 3) 2/NH 3·H 2O reaction system. The composition and microstructure of the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. It showed that the shell was constructed by leaf-like CuO grains with the length of 500–800 nm. UV–vis absorbance spectra of the samples exhibited novel wide adsorption band in ultraviolet region.

Incorporation of MWCNTs into leaf-like CuO nanoplates for superior reversible Li-ion storage

CuO/MWCNT nanocomposite is prepared by a simple precipitation method. The MWCNTs are incorporated into the leaf-like CuO nanoplates and build up a network to connect the CuO nanoleaves. The as-prepared CuO/MWCNT exhibits superior reversible Li-ion storage, the capacity maintains 627 mAh g − 1 at 60 mA g − 1 even after 50 cycles. The improved capability is ascribed to the MWCNT network in the composite, which improves the electrical contact of CuO/CuO and CuO/current collector, facilitates the charge transfer on CuO/electrolyte interfaces, and compensates the volume change of CuO during cycling.

Facile synthesis and photocatalytic activity of ZnO–CuO nanocomposite

Nanostructured ZnO–CuO composite with an open and porous surface was successfully prepared through a simple one-step homogeneous coprecipitation method under low temperature (80 °C), without using any organic solvent or surfactant. The as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and UV–vis spectroscopy. The results demonstrated that the ZnO–CuO nanocomposite presented a hierarchical 3D morphology composed of flower-like ZnO microstructures adorned with leaf-like CuO nanopatches. The photocatalytic activity of ZnO–CuO nanocomposite was evaluated by the photodegradation of rhodamine B under the simulated sunlight irradiation, and compared with those of the monocomponent oxides synthesized by the identical synthetic route and their physical mixture in the approximate molar ratio as that of the nanocomposite. The results indicated that the ZnO–CuO nanocomposite exhibited an appreciable photocatalytic activity, which was mainly attributed to the extended photo-responding range and the increased charge separation rate in the nanocomposite.

Synthesis, characterization, and electrochemical properties of self-assembled leaf-like CuO nanostructures

A simple hydrothermal process was used to synthesize the assembled leaf-like copper oxide (CuO) from copper hydroxide and urea in aqueous solution. The field emission scanning electron microscopy revealed that the individual CuO leaf-like nanostructure has a dimension of about 0.5–1.5 μm in length, 50–70 nm in thickness, and 80–110 nm in width, respectively. These CuO nanostructures were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy, which showed that the CuO nanostructures prepared from the hydrothermal process have high crystalline properties with a monoclinic structure. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies confirmed that the as-prepared sample is composed of CuO, which is consistent with X-ray diffraction patterns. The CuO nanostructures were used as electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries, demonstrating electrochemical properties of a high initial discharge capacity of approximately 1,028 mAh/g along with good cycle stability.

Novel Way to Synthesize CuO Nanocrystals with Various Morphologies

Abstract A novel and facile method for the synthesis of CuO nanocrystals with various morphologies is reported. The synthesis involves the convenient hydrothermal decomposition process of the Cu(COOH)2 in the mixture of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and H2O. The spherical, rodlike, and leaflike CuO nanocrystals are prepared by varying the concentration of water. The capacitance of CuO products was determined by cyclic voltammetry.
