Strategic changes in talent development and leadership management in the funeral service industry in Hong Kong

PurposeThis paper identifies the strategic changes and explores the solutions for talent development and leadership management to address the challenges faced by the funeral service industry in Hong Kong.Design/methodology/approachIn this study, semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with seven key personnel (funeral director, salesperson, coffin shop owner, and mortuary transporter) engaged in the funeral service industry in Hong Kong. Thematic coding was used to identify and organize emerging themes from the data.FindingsFour overarching themes were identified: (1) Perception of the funeral service industry in Hong Kong; (2) Recruitment, retention, and talent development; (3) Prospects of the funeral service industry in Hong Kong; and (4) Other novel challenges. The findings reveal continuous, radical, and complex challenges that may exceed the capacity of any leader to develop workable solutions.Originality/valueThe funeral service industry is facing radical challenges in modern times. A death-denying attitude is observed, which has severely undermined the study of the funeral service industry.

School Principal’s Perspective on Continuing Institutional Growth Development of an Education of Private School in Phnom Penh

This study aimed to explore the school principal’s perspective on continuing institutional growth development. The school principal's job is hard in a number of ways. School principals have to balance their jobs as site manager and instructional leader on a regular basis. This study looked into and identified the knowledge and learning opportunities that school leaders, particularly those who head schools with bilingual programs, rely on to lead their schools. School leadership and management are recognized as key determinants for school reforms; however, little is known about the effects of school principals’ leadership as perceived by teachers on teaching and learning outcomes. Education is main key element for develop family value, community, country, and all sectors in the world. So, school leader must be set clear policy, vision, mission, and core value for students ’achievement. School principal need to have strong commitment and long perspective for develop institutions by change their leadership styles, infrastructures, and school development’s plans. According to data collection and analysis of Mean = 3.29; Std. Deviation = 6.19 from 30 school principals and vice school principals from private school located in Phnom Penh show that: Schools or institutional growth development depend on school principal leadership styles and long perspective for development institutions. Another researchers or scholar can be choose leadership behavior, employee ’mindset change, integrated technology for institution for next studies.

Re-visiting women’s work motivations and career needs: international evidence from the perspective of self-determination theory

Purpose The study explores the work motivations and career needs of women, drawing on self-determination theory. The study aims to develop motivation theories and support organisations to shape the work environment addressing women’s work motivations and current career needs. Design/methodology/approach The exploratory study was conducted based on two research questions: Why do women change jobs? What are women looking for in a new workplace? To conduct this study, an online questionnaire with open-ended questions was prepared. Respondents were women who had applied for an administrative job post in Brazil, Mexico, Poland, Portugal and State of Palestine. Collected answers from 363 respondents were analysed by using Nvivo software. Findings This study presents women’s work motivations and career needs that affect the decision to change the job. Results indicate that women’s work motivations include four components: 1 − career growth (career development, skills improvement, challenges), 2 − competitive compensation (financial, personal fulfilment), 3 − work environment (organisational culture, work-life balance) and 4 − leadership (recognition, management leadership skills). Additionally, the study highlights four components of women’s current career needs: 1 − career growth (continuous professional development, challenges, training skills), 2 − competitive compensation (financial/fair pay, personal fulfilment), 3 − work environment (cooperation/teamwork, adequate tools, respect and safety) and 4 − leadership (clear organisation goals, communication/empathy, recognition, support). Originality/value Based on collected data, components of women’s work motivations and career needs were identified. The results provide contemporary and international evidence about the complex nature of women’s work motivations and career needs.

Intangible Cultural Heritage and UK Built Heritage Practice: Opportunities and Future Directions

ABSTRACT The UK’s ratification of Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in March 2024 signals a formal commitment to engage with the concept of intangible cultural heritage (ICH). This article investigates how this commitment could reshape built heritage practices in the UK through fostering a more integrated relationship between the tangible and intangible qualities of heritage. It argues that prioritising this interface is essential for contemporary built heritage management, ensuring the diverse cultural values embedded in the historic environment are represented. After examining the broader UK context, the article narrows focus to England, where Historic England’s guidance and initiatives demonstrate how shifts in policy and practice could materialise in response to the convention. The article concludes by proposing three key opportunity areas that could emerge from emphasising the tangible–intangible relationship: 1) evolving understandings of heritage, community and participation; 2) recognising the mutual influence of ICH and physical heritage; and 3) strengthening place-based cultural practices. These opportunities offer a timely pathway for the UK to become a thought leader in heritage management by aligning conservation practices with evolving cultural values and community involvement, thus setting a new benchmark for built heritage management in a Western European context.

The role of information flows in trust-based management

PurposeThis paper explores the role of work-related information flows in trust-based management in public sector organizations. Whereas the relationship that trust affects information sharing between employees as such is well known, the opposite relationship where information flows that facilitate access to and sharing of work-related information affect trust is less studied.Design/methodology/approachThe paper analyses survey data from 481 employees at lower hierarchical levels in home care and schools in the City of Oslo four years after the City Council decided to implement trust-based management, using structural equation modelling (SEM).FindingsThe results from the path models indicate that work-related information flows mediate the impact of trust-based management, contribute to the development of trust in managers and increase employee autonomy.Practical implicationsA practical implication is that work-related information flows seem to be an important design variable in trust reforms. Organizations that plan to implement more trust-based management should therefore pay close attention to how changes in management systems and leadership practices impact work-related information flows.Originality/valueThis paper contributes to the public management literature and research on trust reforms by identifying the role of work-related information flows as a mediator in trust-based management. The paper provides new insights into the relationship between information flows, trust and autonomy by combining perspectives from public management, information studies and organizational behaviour.

Innovation and Sustainability in the Amazon with the Use of Blockchain

Objective: The general objective of this study is to model the implementation of a blockchain system for solid wastemanagement in a government agency. The specific objectives of the results are to identify the main challenges in implementing a blockchain system for solid waste management in Public Management (1); characterize the blockchain models identified in this investigation (2); and develop a blockchain system model for solid waste management in a government agency (3). Theoretical Framework: The Theory of New Public Management, discussed in Madan and Ashok (2022), is the basis of this study, considering the notes of these authors, who address the dominant paradigm in public administration. Method: This research has a qualitative or mixed approach, as it includes parametric elements based on architecture such as blockchain, supported by bibliographical research and documentary analysis. The bibliographical research was based on elements of an integrated solid waste management system, through a framework, as conceptualized in the specific topic of this study. The Content Analysis method was used to research documents and other textual or audiovisual databases on solid waste management and blockchain technology. This research method allowed us to extract relevant information from the data collected, organize it into thematic categories, and interpret it in light of the theoretical framework obtained. By applying Content Analysis, patterns, meanings, and nuances were identified that could enrich the understanding of the phenomenon studied, ensuring an in-depth and contextualized analysis. Results and Discussion: The scenario of research on solid waste management in Brazil is marked by significantchallenges that reflect the complexity of the country's socioeconomic and environmental context. According to Agência Brasil (2023), the generation of solid waste has increased alarmingly, with data from 2021 indicating that more than 80 million tons were produced, of which only 32.5% were correctly disposed of. Thisreality highlights the urgent need for effective and innovative public policies that address integrated waste management. Research Implications: The relevance of implementing a blockchain system in public governance is highlighted, considering the growing demand for innovative and sustainable solutions. Originality/Value: This study is of interest to government managers, academics involved in applied research onblockchain in waste management, politicians and other leaders committed to excellence in management, and other professionals committed to promising results in the relationship between innovation and sustainability in organizations.

Leadership in Crisis: Navigating the Challenges of COVID-19

Abstract—The COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges to global industries, with the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) sector being significantly impacted due to lock- downs, supply chain disruptions, and workforce safety concerns. This paper examines how a leading CPG manufacturer navigated the crisis, highlighting the leadership strategies and operational adjustments employed to sustain production, ensure employee safety, and maintain market presence. Key areas of focus in- clude the implementation of automation, establishment of robust quarantine protocols, adoption of flexible work schedules, and incentivization of front-line employees. Additionally, the paper explores the complexities of managing supply chains and vendor relationships during the pandemic and illustrates how, while many competitors were forced to shut down or faced shortages due to inadequate preparedness and inability to adapt safety protocols, the manufacturer remained operational by swiftly reacting to the evolving situation, resulting in increased sales. Drawing on this case study, the paper provides actionable steps for organizations to prepare for future similar scenarios, emphasizing the importance of resilience and proactive leadership in crisis management. Poor Financial Management in South African Municipalities: Assessing Factors Contributing to Undesirable Audit Opinion

South African municipalities are the entities closest to citizens in local communities across the country, and they are required to provide services to them. The sustainable provision of services is heavily reliant on sound public finance management in all levels of government. It is unfortunate that municipalities in South Africa are failing to effectively manage and use public funds to improve service delivery. Most South African municipalities have received negative audit opinions for years, and their current financial situation is deteriorating year after year. This is concerning for a country that has recently celebrated 30 years of democracy; it is unfortunate that democratic gains are being reversed due to issues within South African municipalities such as irregular, fruitless, and wasteful expenditure, non-compliance, a lack of skills, a lack of consequence management, political infighting, corruption, and poor leadership, to name a few. Citizens are the ones who pay the price at the end of the day when services owed to them are not delivered by municipalities due to poor financial management. The objective of this paper is to examine the causes of unsatisfactory audit outcomes in the South African local government sector and recommend solutions to for improving financial management in South African municipalities. To achieve this objective, a systematic literature review was chosen as the appropriate research methodological strategy for this paper

The Role of Principal Leadership Management as a Driving Force in Implementing the Independent Curriculum Using AI

In the millennial era, characterized by constant change and progress, schools that thrive possess specific qualities and characteristics. Education not only functions as a place to transfer knowledge but also as a place to develop students' skills, character, and critical thinking abilities. In this increasingly complex world, educational institutions must adapt curricula and teaching methods that are relevant and able to meet students' diverse needs. Schools that innovate and provide captivating learning experiences will be better able to attract the attention of students and parents. In addition, educational institutions must realize the importance of building an identity and characteristics that distinguish them from other schools. This includes developing superior programs, adequate facilities, and a positive and supportive learning environment. This study investigates the role of principal leadership in implementing the Merdeka Curriculum while integrating artificial intelligence (AI) in a kindergarten/early childhood education environment. Through a qualitative approach, this study explores the experiences of a principal and staff at TK IT Tunas Mulia. Findings indicate that principals play a critical role in fostering a culture of innovation and adaptation to AI, providing the necessary training and resources for teachers to utilize AI tools effectively, and collaborating with stakeholders to ensure successful implementation. However, the study has identified challenges such as limited teacher proficiency in AI and the need for more comprehensive AI-integrated curriculum materials. While principal leadership plays a critical role, the study concludes that further support and professional development are necessary to fully harness the potential of AI in improving early childhood education.

Toward Zero Waste: Sustainable Practices in Waste Management at ETUT

The paper discusses Oguz Han Engineering and Technology University of Turkmenistan's (ETUT) waste management initiatives, particularly its Zero Waste Program aimed at minimizing waste generation and promoting sustainability across campus. Strategies include educational campaigns, eco-friendly purchasing, and collaboration with vendors for waste reduction, reuse, and recycling. ETUT employs structured waste categorization, centralized repositories for reusable items, and a recycling plant with advanced sorting machinery. Innovative methods like paper recycling and composting are used, along with exploring plastic repurposing into fibers and fuel. Organic waste management includes composting, notably reducing landfill waste. Inorganic waste reduction involves paper recycling, plastic conversion, and electronic repair and donation. The program emphasizes waste reduction through recycling and reuse, including upcycling workshops. Hazardous waste from laboratories is managed with local authorities for safe disposal, while relevant associations for environmental safety oversee sewage disposal. These strategies highlight ETUT's commitment to sustainability, positioning it as a regional leader in responsible waste management.

Exploring the Challenges and Solutions in Conducting Clinical Trials in Saudi Arabia: A Qualitative Study Perspective.

Clinical trials are crucial for advancing medical knowledge and improving healthcare outcomes. Despite an increase in research publications in Saudi Arabia, clinical trial productivity has lagged behind. Understanding the barriers to conducting clinical trials in Saudi Arabia is essential. This study aims to explore the challenges and propose solutions for improving clinical trial capacity in the Kingdom. Specifically, we aim to develop national strategies to enhance clinical trial infrastructure, identify educational needs, and suggest ways to strengthen research education and training in Saudi Arabia. The study utilized a qualitative research design with a grounded theory approach. Participants were recruited through purposive sampling, including clinical trial professionals from Riyadh, Jeddah, and Al Khobar, who participated in three half-day workshops. Discussions focused on required skillsets, barriers to conducting trials, improvement recommendations, gaps in research education, and strategies for the Saudi National Institute of Health (SNIH) to support clinical trials. Data were collected through pre-workshop surveys and focus group discussions, and thematic analysis was employed to identify common themes. A total of 35 participants, mainly from the government sector (67%), attended the workshops. Physicians represented the largest professional group (31%), with the majority being Saudi nationals (83%) and engaged in clinical practice (65%). The study identified key challenges, including limited resources (82%), inadequate infrastructure (82%), time constraints (80%), and insufficient funding (80%). While satisfaction with educational programs was mixed, a need for improved infrastructure and support for clinical trials in Saudi Arabia was evident. The focus group discussions further highlighted the importance of research competency, identifying 11 essential domains such as research methodology, data management, and project leadership. Nine major challenges were noted, including funding, infrastructure, and collaboration deficits. A total of 38 recommendations were proposed to address these challenges and enhance the national clinical trial ecosystem. This study underscores the importance of addressing the challenges in conducting clinical trials in Saudi Arabia through targeted educational programs, training initiatives, and enhanced support from the SNIH. By implementing strategies that focus on funding, resources, training, and collaboration, Saudi Arabia can significantly advance its clinical trial landscape, improve research quality and efficiency, and position itself as a leader in global health research.

Integrating the Airway Lead structure into a large healthcare system to appraise the landscape of airway management resources

Airway Leads are clinicians who guide safe airway management institutionally and act as liaisons between the evolving airway management landscape and bedside clinicians. Internationally, resources produced by Airway Leads Networks aid clinicians in establishing emergency airway management protocols and making difficult airway equipment decisions. The creation of an Airway Leads Network within the United States' multi-payer healthcare system is ongoing, spearheaded nationally by groups such as the Society for Airway Management. We aimed to build a committee of airway leaders across the Yale New Haven Health system and to leverage this committee to appraise the airway equipment and personnel resources throughout the system. We identified key stakeholders in airway management across the healthcare system and administered a quality improvement survey to members of the assembled committee querying their knowledge of the availability of airway management devices. The dataset was gathered from 14 airway management leaders identified across 4 surgical facilities, 6 emergency departments and 5 medical intensive care units at 8 hospitals and hospital campuses within the Yale New Haven Health system. Equipment available in greater than 75 % of locations included hyperangulated and standard geometry videolaryngoscopes, rigid tracheal tube stylets, tracheal tube introducers, flexible intubation scopes, scalpels and waveform capnography. Equipment available in 25 % to <75 % of locations included emergency invasive airway kits, wheeled airway towers or airway boxes, intubating oral airways, airway exchange and Aintree catheters, intubation-capable supraglottic airways, and awake intubation supplies. Glidescope (Verathon) was the most common videolaryngoscope and flexible intubation scope, and Aura (Teleflex) was the most common intubation-capable supraglottic airway available. The initiative illustrated the feasibility and utility of developing a committee of airway leaders in a large health system. While all locations had access to a requisite array of airway management devices, there was variation in the availability and brand of individual airway equipment.

The odyssey of Turkish school leaders in Africa: An expedition into professional identity, challenges, and cultural adaptations

This phenomenological study explores the experiences of Turkish school leaders in international schools across 20 African countries, offering a novel perspective on educational leadership beyond the Anglo-Saxon context. In-depth interviews were conducted with 20 leaders selected through maximum variation sampling. The analysis revealed four themes: (i) factors that lead to working abroad, (ii) challenges of working abroad, (iii) perceived cultural similarities and differences, and (iv) reflections on international experiences. Findings illuminate a complex interplay of personal, altruistic, and professional factors driving these leaders’ decisions to work abroad. Participants reported navigating significant challenges at individual, professional, and environmental levels, necessitating the development of cultural intelligence, adaptive leadership styles, and crisis management skills. The study highlights a profound transformation in leaders’ professional identities from “outsiders” to “cultural mediators,” underscoring the critical role of culturally responsive leadership in diverse educational contexts. Results reveal how African sociocultural settings shape expatriate leaders’ mindsets, fostering more collaborative approaches and deeper cross-cultural appreciation. This highlights the evolution of leaders’ cultural understanding and effective communication skills, emphasizing the need for targeted support and professional development in cultural sensitivity and adaptive leadership. This research enhances the understanding of leadership complexities in multicultural settings, providing insights for global educational leadership and future research in cross-cultural management.

The Role of Visionary Leadership, Curriculum Innovation, and Management of Educational Resources on the Quality of Character-Based Education for High School Students in West Java

This study examines the influence of visionary leadership, curriculum innovation, and educational resource management on the quality of character-based education in high schools in West Java, Indonesia. Utilizing a quantitative approach, data were collected from 170 high school students through a Likert-scale survey. The data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS). The findings reveal that curriculum innovation has the most significant positive impact on character-based education, followed by the management of educational resources and visionary leadership. These results underscore the importance of adopting innovative curricula and effectively managing educational resources to enhance character education. Visionary leadership also plays a critical role in setting a direction for character development, though its impact is more pronounced when combined with curriculum and resource management. The study provides insights for educators, policymakers, and school administrators in creating an educational environment that fosters both academic and moral development.

Analysis Of Management to Improve the Quality of Education at SMA Muhammadiyah 7 Makassar

This study aims to (1) find the implementation of SWOT analysis in improving the quality of education in SMA Muhammadiyah 7 Makassar, (2) describe the internal and external conditions of SMA Muhammadiyah 7 Makassar in the context of improving the quality of education, and (3) reveal the supporting factors and inhibiting factors for the implementation of SWOT analysis in improving the quality of education in SMA Muhammadiyah 7 Makassar. The methodology used is observation, interview, and documentation techniques. The results of this study are supervisors (1) The role of the principal in improving the quality of education at SMA Muhammadiyah 7 Makassar has been well implemented through the principal's leadership management strategy with SWOT analysis, so that the quality of education of SMA Muhammadiyah 7 Makassar until the implementation of this research activity is still able to compete with other educational institutions that are equivalent to the indication of the number of students who are relatively large and ( 2) Internally or externally, the condition of SMA Muhammadiyah 7 Makassar is safe, peaceful, orderly, and conducive even though obstacles and obstacles still exist (unavoidable), especially in terms of the implementation of learning activities. However, these obstacles can be minimized and even eliminated through a leadership approach both by the subject matter teachers, classroom teachers, and the principal's leadership, and (3) In order to achieve the improvement of education quality through the management of education quality improvement at SMA Muhammadiyah 7 Makassar based on the SWOT analysis strategy, of course, it must also receive support, among others, the managerial ability of the principal of SMA Muhammadiyah 7 Makassar in regulating and managing school stakeholders, providing educational facilities and infrastructure, and the involvement of all school stakeholders in policy-making, especially related to improving the quality of education.

The Effects of Managers' Leadership Styles on Employee Performance in Four-Star Hotels of Arusha City Council

Employee performance in four-star hotels in Arusha has been inconsistent, partly due to varying managerial leadership styles. This study investigates the effects of these leadership styles on employee performance in Arusha City Council. The research is grounded in a positivist philosophy, utilizing a mixed-methods approach with a dominant quantitative descriptive design based on multiple linear regression. The study draws upon key leadership theories, including transformational and transactional leadership theories, and examines the impact of specific leadership styles: democratic, autocratic, and laissez-faire. Stratified random sampling was employed to ensure representation across various departments, targeting a total population of 287 employees, with a final sample size of 167 participants. Data were collected using questionnaires and analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics with the aid of SPSS (version 20). Notable hotels included in the study are Mount Meru Hotel, Arusha Serena Hotel, and Kibo Palace Hotel. Regression analysis indicated that all leadership styles significantly affect employee performance, with democratic leadership having the most positive impact. The study concludes that contingent leadership is essential for creating a work environment conducive to better performance in four-star hotels.

IDENTIFIKASI FAKTOR DAN TANTANGAN DI SEKTOR PERUNGGASAN UNTUK MENINGKATKAN KELINCAHAN BISNIS DI AGROINDUSTRI INDONESIA: TINJAUAN LITERATUR

The poultry industry in Indonesia, especially the poultry sector, plays a crucial role in ensuring national food security by providing essential animal protein sources. Therefore, business agility is highly necessary to address fluctuating demand issues that can change unpredictably. Many industries in this sector have faced setbacks due to unforeseen shifts in demand. However, in implementing business agility, numerous factors need consideration, such as traditional organizational structures, bureaucratic processes that impede change, and a corporate culture resistant to transformation. This research aims to identify various challenges faced by companies in achieving business agility through a literature review using Publish or Perish software and manual searches on Google Scholar, resulting in the selection and analysis of 23 relevant journals. The findings from the literature review indicate that effective supply chain management, innovative management leadership, technological automation, adaptability to unforeseen events, investment in employee development, and a deep understanding of customer needs are key factors influencing business agility in the poultry industry in Indonesia.

Literature Review on Creative Leadership in Chinese Culture and Arts Industry Managers

With the rapid development of the economy and culture, the creative industry has become the pillar of urban economic growth, and the supply of creative industry personnel has been in short supply. The bottleneck in the development of China’s creative industry is the extreme shortage of creative talent, and the education and training of a large number of creative talents is a great success for China’s creative industry in the future. This study investigated the model of Creative Leadership in China. Xiang (2009) documented that the dual quality superimposing model of cultural industry’s competence can be divided into five dimensions: (1) integrity, responsibility, integrity, fairness, self-control, team spirit, (2) management and management: initiative, public relations, negotiation, marketing, service consciousness. Wang (2016) commented on the status of creative talent competence, judged on the competence of creative talent, conducted empirical research on the competence of creative talent through the design of the research path, and analyzed the data. Li (2007) defines the connotation of the creative industry and the skills of the creative industry, analyses the talents’ ability and quality. At the same time, the concept of competence is introduced, and the competence characteristic model of creative advertising person is established with the example of a creative advertising person. This paper analyzes the strategies for cultivating the competence of creative industrial talents from three levels: society, enterprise, and talent itself.

Kyai Leadership Management Model in Improving Quality Performance of Educators and Education Personnel in Islamic Boarding Schools Ibnussabil Santan Tengah

The Kyai leadership model in Islamic boarding schools plays a major role in improving the performance of educators and education personnel. As a leader, at least he must be able to influence, motivate, protect, and guide his subordinates to have significant performance quality. Thus, optimal performance is directly proportional to the institution's success in achieving its vision, mission, and goals. This study was conducted to find out how the Kyai leadership management model is carried out at the Ibnussabil Santan Tengah Islamic Boarding School in improving the quality of performance of educators and education personnel from a philosophical perspective. The research method uses a qualitative approach by describing the leadership management model used in improving the quality of performance of educators and education personnel, in this case, interviews and documentation are the data collection techniques. The results of the study showed that there is no best leader model because all types of leadership must be used according to the situation or circumstances to improve the quality of performance of educators and education personnel effectively.
