Leadership Perspectives in Basic Education: A Scholarly Analysis of the Insights and Views of Eminent School Heads

Educational challenges continuous to grow; thus, school management and leadership should transcend through times. This study explored the insights and perspectives of the eminent school leaders in basic education regarding their experiences influencing their leadership approaches, values, and practices. Five seasoned and eminent school leaders participated in a semi-structured interview, which was thematically analyzed and interpreted. Based on the analyzed data, two themes were central in the discussion: (1) Commitment to Lifelong Learning and Professional Growth; and (2) The Transformative Power of Leadership Qualities. The study revealed that the school leadership approaches and practices are shaped by a deep commitment to lifelong learning and professional growth. Furthermore, the school heads believed that the positive values and behaviors in leadership can have a transformative impact to the school community and the people in it. Hence, there should be targeted leadership programs for new school heads in the basic education to further boost their leadership competence.

Image of Central Asian leaders in the world media space: theory and practice

ABSTRACT The purpose is to identify the main factors in establishing the image of country leaders in the media by selecting, systematizing, and analyzing the key components of the process of developing the media image of politicians. The main methods in the research were system analysis, statistical method, method of scenario modeling, and comparative analysis. Such key concepts as image, character, and media portrait of political leaders at the present stage were defined; the basic features of the so-called new media, based on using Internet resources, were summarized; the main approaches and principles to the theoretical aspect of exploring the phenomenon of leaders’ image in the media space were summarized. Distinctive features, trends and characteristic factors of developing the right image (images and attitudes that are strategically effective, ethically sound, and aligned with desired outcomes and values) of presidential candidates of such countries as the U.S.A. and France were considered. The results and conclusions of this work can be used as a practical basis for future research on the above-mentioned issues, and for developing strategies and plans to promote and strengthen the image of politicians in the media space.

Leader–member exchange and emotional exhaustion in registered construction engineers: mediating role of active management by exception and moderating role of self-esteem

PurposeThis study investigated the impact of leader-member exchange (LMX) on emotional exhaustion among Chinese registered construction engineers by examining the mediating role of active management by exception (AMbE) and the moderating role of self-esteem.Design/methodology/approachUsing a sample of 304 registered construction engineers, the study applies the job demands-resources (JD-R) model to explore how LMX, AMbE and self-esteem interact to influence emotional exhaustion.FindingsThe findings indicate a significant negative relationship between LMX and emotional exhaustion, suggesting that higher-quality exchanges between leaders and members reduce emotional exhaustion. Additionally, AMbE was found to mediate this relationship, where high-quality LMX relationships decrease the extent of AMbE, subsequently lowering emotional exhaustion. Self-esteem was also found to moderate the relationship between AMbE and emotional exhaustion, with high self-esteem exacerbating the negative impact of AMbE and low self-esteem buffering this impact.Originality/valueThese results extend the JD-R model by incorporating leadership quality and management style as critical factors influencing emotional well-being. The study underscores the need for balanced management approaches that consider both supportive and corrective behaviors and highlights the importance of tailoring interventions based on individual differences in self-esteem. The findings provide valuable insights for both theory and practice in managing stress and enhancing the well-being of professionals in high-stress industries. Future research should aim to replicate these findings with larger samples to further validate and extend the results.

Enhancing knowledge sharing through authentic leadership: An investigation of occupational self-efficacy and psychological ownership as moderators

ABSTRACT This study examines the moderating role of occupational self-efficacy and psychological ownership on the nexus between authentic leadership and knowledge sharing behavior of military officers in Ghana. A sample of 382 respondents completed an online questionnaire, and the data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and partial least squares structural equation modeling. The findings show that authentic leadership positively influences knowledge sharing behavior of security officers, while occupational self-efficacy and psychological ownership enhance the positive effects of authentic leadership on security officers’ sharing behavior. The findings of the study suggest organizations, especially in the context of the military, should invest in developing the authentic leadership quality of officers, enhance their occupational self-efficacy and fostering a sense of psychological ownership among military officers to enhance their knowledge sharing capabilities.

The role of leadership qualities of the management in preserving and ensuring the functionality of relocated Ukrainian higher education institutions during the war

The war in Ukraine has led to significant changes in the functioning of higher education institutions. Many universities from the eastern and southern regions of the country were forced to relocate to safer areas. The study examines the role of leadership qualities of the management of Ukrainian HEIs relocated due to the war on their success in functioning in the new conditions from the perspective of the academic staff. The research methods included an anonymous online questionnaire of 162 academic staff members from Berdiansk State Pedagogical University and Melitopol State Pedagogical University named after Bohdan Khmelnytsky. The study identified leadership qualities that HEI staff identified as key to stabilizing the institution’s operations in crisis conditions. Responsibility was named by 53.09% of respondents, and strategic thinking by 44.44%. Also, it was found that respondents, in general, positively assessed the results of leadership actions of management in difficult conditions: 29.6% rated them as “very effective” and 54.3% as “effective.” Despite the overall successful adaptation of the studied HEIs, weaknesses in management decisions were revealed, including insufficient emotional support for academic staff and the absence of developed crisis action plans. The study’s conclusions emphasize the importance of further developing professional and moral-volitional qualities of management representatives for effective HEI governance in crisis conditions. The findings may be useful in creating specialized professional development programs for HEI managers in conditions of political, economic, and other instability.

Effectiveness of Active Support on the quality of life and well-being of people with moderate to mild intellectual disabilities.

Active Support is a support model designed to enhance quality of life through activity engagement in people with intellectual disabilities. The aim of the current study was to investigate whether implementation of Active Support affected quality of life, well-being, and activity engagement of residents with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities, using a cluster randomised controlled design. Fourteen services were recruited, and Active Support was implemented after conducting baseline assessments. Residents in both the intervention group (n = 47) and the control group (n = 38) reported on their Quality of Life, eudaimonic well-being, and activity engagement at pretest and at follow-up 9 months after pretest. Level of Active Support implementation was monitored by observing the quality of support and practice leadership. Active Support had a significant effect on independence and well-being, two subscales of quality of life. Residents in the intervention group showed a significantly larger increase on social activity engagement compared to the control group. There were no significant interaction terms for other resident outcomes. For the intervention group, there was a significant increase in quality of support. Findings indicated significant impact on some aspects of quality of life, though not all. Suggestions for future research are therefore discussed. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS?: Active Support is a support model that is increasingly adopted across several countries. Although there is considerable evidence that Active Support increases activity engagement for people with an intellectual disability, there are very few randomised controlled trials to test effectiveness, and the impact of Active Support on overall quality of life has never been examined. To address these gaps, the current study therefore evaluated the impact of Active Support on quality of life and resident well-being using a randomised controlled trial. This evaluation of Active Support contributes to the existing body of knowledge on the support model, strengthening its evidence base for people with moderate to mild intellectual disability.

Strategic Leadership and Their Impact on the Quality of Work Life: An Analytical Study in the Directorate of Intelligence and Counter-Terrorism

The present study investigates the linkage between strategic leadership practices and quality of work life (QWL) within the Intelligence and Counter-Terrorism Directorate. Data was drawn from 115 freshly acquired respondents from senior and middle management by means of a multi-item questionnaire. The analysis that follows - SPSS, AMOS and SMART PLS V.4 - shows that the Directorate's clear defining of strategic direction and decisive decision making largely affects QWL. The study deduces critical issues pertaining to strategic leadership towards the improvement of work conditions and job security and human capital development where all will lead to better performance by the organization. In summary, strategic leadership practices, including setting strategic direction, developing human capital, ethical practices, and balanced strategic control, significantly affect quality of work life. The Directorate is very much interested in a clear definition of direction with respect to the strategic direction resulting from its decisive and bold decision-making at several points of the organization and with its transparent task descriptions. The Directorate also shows increasing importance toward emphasizing ethical practices by backing its levels with some ethical standards and principles and proper use of scarce resources in tandem with the Directorate approach towards further showing interest in the constitutionality of how the work is arranged, dealing equally with workers, and providing job security based on efficiency and productivity. This study, therefore, emphasizes the relevance of strategic leadership with respect to the positive creation of an atmosphere within which to improve organizational performance through better quality of work life.

Investigation of the Relationship Between Perceived Leadership Behaviours of Nurses and Hospital Safety Culture: A Study With the Structural Equation Model.

Work environments that support patient safety initiatives are important for quality service and patient outcomes. The relationship between the leadership behaviours of nurse managers and safety culture, which has the potential to support these initiatives, constitutes one of the most important knowledge gaps. The study aimed to determine the relationship between nurses' perceived leadership behaviours and hospital safety culture and the factors affecting them. We tested the theoretical model using structural equation modelling with the AMOS 21 program. The research was conducted with 134 nurses in two public hospitals in the south of Türkiye. Data were collected between October and December 2021 using the Leadership Behaviour Questionnaire and the Patient Safety Culture Hospital Questionnaire. Descriptive statistical analysis used to evaluate the data of the study. Structural equation modelling analysis and confirmatory factor analysis performed to test the research hypotheses. The study found that non-punitive attitudes towards the mistakes had a full mediating effect on overall perception of safety interaction with employee-oriented leadership and high-level hospital interventions (β = -0.510, 95% CI -1.006/-0.076), and change had partly mediating effect on overall perception of safety interaction with change-oriented leadership (β = -0.510, 95% CI -1.043/-0.053). It is clear that if nurse managers are to improve the staff's patient safety culture, they should develop change-oriented leadership skills by identifying adverse events and risks and motivating staff to learn from errors without taking punitive measures. In this context, healthcare organizations should evaluate the leadership qualities of managers. Managers at all levels can make plans to develop leadership behaviours that will play a facilitating role in improving patient safety.

Predictors of Nurses' Job Satisfaction in Home Care Settings: Findings From the AIDOMUS-IT Study.

Nurses' job satisfaction in hospitals is fundamental for the quality of care and the safety of patients. However, sociodemographic trends require moving care to patients' homes, and the predictors of job satisfaction for nurses working in the home care settings remain largely unknown. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate job satisfaction of nurses working in Italian home care settings and its determinants. Multicenter observational cross-sectional study. This study was conducted in the districts of 70 local health authorities in Italy. Data on the characteristics of the organization and nurses were collected. Nursing job satisfaction was evaluated on a four-point scale ranging from "very satisfied" to "very dissatisfied." Additionally, the following variables were assessed: workload, quality of leadership, work-private life conflict, burnout symptoms, possibility for development, staffing and resource adequacy, nurse manager ability, safety climate, and teamwork climate. A logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify factors influencing job satisfaction. Only organizational variables had a predictive value for nurses' job satisfaction. Workload (OR = 1.01; p = 0.033), work-private life conflict (OR = 1.02; p < 0.001), burnout (OR = 1.02; p < 0.001), and staffing inadequacy (OR = 1.44; p = 0.003) predicted higher levels of nurse dissatisfaction. Instead, high-quality leadership (OR = 0.981; p < 0.001), possibility for development (OR = 0.973; p < 0.001), and good teamwork climate (OR = 0.994; p = 0.003) were predictors of better levels of satisfaction. This study suggested that home care nurses are generally satisfied with their jobs. To enhance job satisfaction, it is essential to improve nurses' work environment, the leadership quality and ensure professional development. Our results are globally relevant as they contribute to the limited evidence available on this topic in home care settings. This study emphasizes the need of measuring nurses' job satisfaction and implementing interventions to promote healthy work environments.

P-1808. Strategies for Antimicrobial Stewardship Program Resiliency During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract Background The COVID-19 pandemic was an unprecedented stress test for hospital-based antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programs. The purpose of this study was to characterize strategies for AMS program resiliency during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods Using a national dataset, we identified hospitals according to three criteria: 1.) significant COVID-19 burden; 2.) appropriate antibiotic prescribing patterns before the pandemic; and 3.) maintenance of appropriate antibiotic prescribing patterns during the pandemic. We conducted semi-structured interviews with pharmacists, physicians and quality leaders involved in AMS during the pandemic from identified hospitals. Interview guides were developed using the Systems Engineering Initiative for Patient Safety (SEIPS) framework. Transcribed interviews were analyzed iteratively using content analysis directed by the SEIPS model. Results We conducted 30 interviews from 19 unique high-performing health care systems across the country. We interviewed 17 pharmacists, 12 physicians and 1 infection prevention nurse. Resilient AMS strategies in place pre-pandemic included positive hospital wide AMS culture (organization); system-wide AMS programs (organization); decentralized antimicrobial stewardship (organization); strong interprofessional relationships (organization &amp; person); infectious disease involvement (person); protocols to facilitate pharmacist autonomy (organization &amp; tools and technology) and automated tools to facilitate AMS program activities (tools and technology). Additionally, the following strategies were implemented during the pandemic to withstand increased workload and the rapidly evolving pandemic: prioritization of highest yield stewardship interventions (organization &amp; task); and organizational flexibility (organization). Conclusion Using a systems engineering informed qualitative approach, we characterized work system strategies to promote resiliency among AMS programs during the COVID-19 pandemic which should inform future efforts to promote AMS program resiliency during periods of health system stress. P-1809. Strategies to Optimize Antibiotic Stewardship for Patients with COVID-19 Using a Systems Engineering Framework

Abstract Background The COVID-19 pandemic stressed antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programs with increased workloads and lack of guidance on the treatment of COVID-19. Throughout the pandemic, COVID-19 patients have received antibiotics for this viral illness despite reported low rates of confirmed bacterial co-infections. The purpose of this study was to identify challenges to and strategies for successful antibiotic stewardship for COVID-19 inpatients. Part 1 of Table 1 Methods We utilized the Premier Healthcare Database to identify hospitals with appropriate antibiotic prescribing before and maintained during the pandemic while facing significant COVID-19 patient burden. We conducted semi-structured interviews with pharmacists, physicians, and quality leaders involved in AMS during the pandemic. Interview guides were developed according to participants’ roles using the Systems Engineering Initiative for Patient Safety (SEIPS) framework. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed iteratively using directed content analysis guided by the SEIPS model. Part 2 of Table 1 Results We conducted 30 interviews from 19 different high-performing health care systems across the country. We interviewed 17 pharmacists, 12 physicians and 1 nurse. The main challenges participants identified included lack of knowledge and formal guidance on how to treat COVID-19, feelings of helplessness, and diagnostic uncertainty. Strong, clear leadership from hospital leaders or infectious disease groups, organizational and national guidelines and clinical experience caring for COVID-19 helped providers overcome lack of knowledge, and guidelines on how to treat COVID-19 assuaged feelings of helplessness. Diagnostic tools including host response biomarkers (e.g. procalcitonin) and chest imaging were utilized and incorporated into workflows to help overcome diagnostic uncertainty and guide antibiotic prescribing. Part 3 of Table 1 Conclusion Successful strategies for COVID-19 antibiotic stewardship included overcoming knowledge gaps with clear leadership from infectious disease teams and implementation of structured COVID-19 diagnostic and treatment guidelines. The leadership expectations statement: A simple tool for enhancing leadership in healthcare organizations.

Healthcare organizations are reliant on cadres of managers to oversee operations, ensuring the delivery of excellent patient care and accomplishment of institutional missions. These managers obviously must be well versed in the principles of management, but they also must be proficient in leadership. As leadership can take many different forms, healthcare organizations must take care in their associated leadership development efforts to ensure that they have a firm grasp on the precise leadership qualities needed within their given organizations. Achieving this knowledge can be greatly facilitated by developing leadership expectations statements. This article profiles leadership expectations statements, presents a recent statement developed by Willis Knighton Health, and outlines the steps required for assembling and using them in any healthcare institution.

Transformational Leadership Qualities, Performance of School Administrators and Teachers’ Self-Efficacy: Basis for Transformational Leadership Model

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between transformational leadership and teachers’ self-efficacy through analysing school administrators’ performance - in terms of instructions, research and extension - and quality. The study made use of a combination of the descriptive and correlational methods of research. The descriptive design helped the researcher to characterize the leadership performance of the school administrators and their qualities. The correlational approach was used to determine the magnitude of the relationship between the leadership performances and qualities of the school administrators, and teachers’ efficacy of the participating state universities. The study utilized the descriptive-correlational method as a quantitative research design. It involved participants who were school administrators and regular faculty members of state universities in the province of Cavite, with a total enumeration of 226 participants accounted in the study with the participation of 51 school administrators. Questionnaires were the primary instruments in data gathering which were developed by the researcher. The data collected were analyzed using the use of median, frequency, percentage, Kruskal-Wallis, Friedman’s, and Spearman Rank Correlation Coefficient. The data revealed that as per the level of the following transformational leadership quality of the school administrators, the majority of the participants constitutes Very Satisfactory level of transformational leadership by their leaders and Inspirational Motivation obtained Excellent verbal interpretation, and this implies that participants were satisfied as to transformational qualities of their leaders, with a high regard for Inspirational Motivation. In terms of performance, leaders manifesting high performance in the three-fold areas obviosuly showed Very Satisfacory performance in terms of Instructions, Research and Extension, Over-all results showed that the school administrators’ performance and qualities highly influenced teachers’ efficacy.

Academically Challenging Environment and Passionate Leadership Qualities of Teachers in Public Elementary Schools

This study was conducted to determine the academically challenging environment and passionate leadership qualities of teachers in public elementary schools in Talomo District, Division of Davao City. This employed the non-experimental quantitative research design utilizing correlational method leading to regression analysis. The respondents of the study were the 130 teachers in public elementary schools. The statistical tools used in this study were weighted mean, product moment correlation coefficient or (pearson r) and regression analysis. Based on the data, the academically challenging environment was oftentimes manifested while the passionate leadership qualities were perceived the same. There was significant relationship between the academically challenging environment and passionate leadership qualities of teachers. On the other hand, there was significant influence between the academically challenging environment and passionate leadership qualities of teachers in public elementary schools. In the light of the findings the study may guide the school administrators in articulating plans and school programs that will respond to the teachers’ needs and aspirations. Thus, this could be the basis in developing strategies and formulating rules towards development of academically challenging environment and passionate leadership qualities of teachers in public elementary schools. In addition, this study may contribute to teachers teaching effectiveness and build a trusting and creative atmosphere that is conducive to the attainment of the goals of the organization.

THE INFLUENCE OF LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT COMPETENCE OF MADRASAH PRINCIPALS ON THE ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT OF TEACHERS

This study aims to analyze the effect of leadership and management competence of madrasah principals on the entrepreneurial spirit of teachers in MTs Kuningan Regency. The problem raised in this study is the low entrepreneurial spirit of teachers, which is allegedly closely related to leadership factors and management competencies that are not yet optimal. The novelty of this research lies in combining in-depth analysis of the relationship between educational leadership and managerial competence and its impact on entrepreneurship development in the context of Islamic education. Using qualitative methods, data were collected through in-depth interviews and document studies from various madrasahs in Kuningan Regency. The findings of this study show that the leadership of madrasah heads has a significant influence in shaping the entrepreneurial spirit of teachers, while management competencies have not had an adequate impact. The main conclusion of this study emphasizes the importance of improving the leadership capacity of madrasah principals in encouraging innovation and entrepreneurial spirit among teachers. The implication of this research is expected to be the basis of policy development and training for madrasah principals to strengthen the quality of leadership and management that is more adaptive to the needs of teachers in developing entrepreneurship.

Challenges facing emergency departments in public hospitals

The management of hospitals are facing increasing challenges in managing the service and quality of the emergency department. This study identifies the challenges faced by healthcare professionals who work in the emergency department and identifies practical solutions to enhance the sustainable management and leadership of the emergency department. A qualitative study was conducted with health professionals who work in the emergency department in three public hospitals in Saudi Arabia, including six managers, five physicians and seven nurses. Data were collected through one-on-one interviews from purposively selected the emergency department at public hospitals in Saudi Arabia. Three themes emerged from interviews that described the challenges and experiences of health professionals: ethical dimensions, management dimensions, and health system dimensions. The results of the current study indicate that patient overcrowding, long waiting hours in emergency departments, having to make decisions concerning which patients to treat first and the quality of services, leadership and team effectiveness were major contributors to the struggles faced by health professionals inside the emergency department. This study provides the most comprehensive information available to date about the challenges faced by the emergency department managers and leadership and provides suggestions to develop short and long-term strategies to reduce overcrowding in hospitals.

Framing Person-Centred Leadership in Residential Care: A Cross-Cultural Adaptation of the Aged-Care Clinical Leadership Qualities Framework.

To cross-culturally adapt a framework for person-centred leadership in residential care for older people in Sweden. This study has an exploratory and descriptive design. The translation procedure followed a cyclic process of translation into Swedish and back-translation into English by two independent bilingual linguists. An evaluation of conceptual and semantic equivalence and comprehensiveness between the original English version and the translated Swedish version was performed by an expert committee. The translated version of the framework was validated by leaders (n = 34) in residential care, who assessed its relevance through a web form. The adaptation of the framework followed recommended guidelines for cross-cultural adaptation. The translation procedure resulted in two minor changes related to the wording in two descriptors. The results of the validation procedure showed that the framework is relevant for leaders in Swedish residential care for older people. The cross-culturally adapted framework is useful and suitable for leaders in Swedish residential care for older people. The framework clarifies the leader's role and identifies leadership attributes and requirements for person-centred leadership in residential care, thereby providing support to leaders by framing person-centred leadership. The framework can be used as a guide for leadership training and/or development initiatives in residential care. It can be further extended to nursing curriculums, leadership development programs, and organisational performance and development processes. It may also provide a foundation for policy and guidelines by establishing the activities required for leaders to promote person-centredness in the care of older people. This study followed the STROBE checklist for cross-sectional studies. There was no patient or public contribution.

Exploring educational leadership and teacher ethics: who can lead and what are the key qualities?

ABSTRACT This study delves into the perception of educational leadership and professional ethics among Chinese educators, paying particular attention to identifying key characteristics deemed important for effective leadership and examining the relationship between leadership qualities and ethical behavior. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study combines qualitative data from an open survey in which 207 teachers listed ten key leadership qualities with quantitative analysis. This study found that Chinese educators consider honesty to be the most important quality for effective leadership in education. However, the results showed no significant correlation between leadership qualities and adherence to professional ethics, suggesting their independent development.

School Heads’ Emotional Quotient, Resiliency and Productivity

This study evaluates the emotional quotient (EQ), resiliency, and productivity of school heads in the Schools Division of Antique for the 2023-2024 school year. Employing a descriptive-correlational research design, data were gathered from 218 school heads using validated questionnaires. The findings reveal that school heads exhibit high levels of emotional intelligence, substantial resiliency, and robust productivity, with notable variations based on demographic factors such as age, educational attainment, and experience. The results underscore the significant influence of EQ and resiliency on enhancing productivity, highlighting the importance of targeted training programs to strengthen these competencies among school leaders. This research underscores the role of emotional and adaptive leadership qualities in fostering effective school management and improved educational outcomes.
