Neumed Boethianmetrafrom Canterbury: a newly recovered leaf of Cambridge, University Library, Gg. 5.35 (the ‘Cambridge Songs’ manuscript)

Frankfurt, Stadt- und Universitätsbibliothek, Fragm. lat. I. 56, a single detached leaf written in Anglo-Caroline minuscule of mid-eleventh-century date and containing a number of neumedmetraof Boethius, was recently brought to the attention of Dr M. T. Gibson1by the Keeper of Manuscripts in Frankfurt, Dr Gerhard Powitz.2Dr C. Page identified it as part of the ‘Cambridge Songs’ manuscript, Cambridge, University Library, Gg. 5. 35 (fols. 432–41). The leaf throws valuable new light not only on the subject of musical notation in late Anglo-Saxon England, but also on the composition of one of the best-known collections of medieval Latin lyrics.3

A Canterbury classbook of the mid-eleventh century (the ‘Cambridge Songs’ manuscript)

Cambridge, University Library, Gg. 5.35 is known to scholars principally for the contents of fols. 432–41, the lyric anthology known (somewhat mis-leadingly) as the ‘Cambridge Songs’. Important though this group of poems is for the history of the Latin lyric, it has diverted attention from the contents of the manuscript as a whole, which presents a remarkable range of texts, mainly poetic, from the Early Christian, Carolingian and Anglo-Latin periods. Physical description, moreover, has generally been confined to the section containing the ‘Cambridge Songs’ and consequently the method of compilation of the whole codex has been neglected. The Cambridge University Library catalogue, for instance, gives the impression of forty-four works entered sequentially in the manuscript, and leaves unexplained such curiosities as no. 41 ‘Prose treatise on medicine’ and no. 44 ‘Certain medical prescriptions’, which appear to sandwich between them the ‘Cambridge Songs’ and another group of ‘hymns’. This article describes the compilation as a whole, its physical appearance, its genesis, and its contents in detail.

Musical Settings of Horace's Lyric Poems

It was with such diffidence as becomes an amateur that I yielded to an invitation to read a paper before the Musical Association. For some three years I have at intervals collected notes of musical settings of Classical—that is to say, Greek and Latin—lyrics, excluding those which occur in the drama. I have paid particular attention to one author—Horace, but even in this instance my notes are in many places defective, partly because I was unable, owing to the war, to consult friends and colleagues abroad, and partly because I had not the leisure to make any systematic attempt to exhaust the sources of information nearer at hand. Hence it is that the chief reason for my reluctance to face this learned audience—my inadequate equipment—became in the end the chief reason for my acceptance of your flattering invitation. By bringing my subject to the notice of musicians I hoped to gather more material, and I shall be grateful to any members of the Association who may add to my store.

VIII.—The Romance Lyric From The Standpoint of Antecedent Latin Documents

The relation of Latin lyric poetry to the lyric poetry of the Romance peoples remains one of the interesting problems of medieval literature. It has already challenged the industry of generations of investigators with no definite result. And it may be doubted whether conclusions which are self-convincing will be reached in the immediate future. The chief hindrance to a satisfactory solution is presented, of course, by the incompleteness of relevant material. The examples of Latin lyrics which may be considered as expressive of natural emotion are few in number before the end of the eleventh century, and the poems of William IX are the first in Romance. There may be found here and there, to be sure, scattered hints of the existence of non-artistic poetry, whether in Latin or the vernacular, but the information so furnished by Latin writers is uncertain as well as meager. Widely different interpretations may be put on it. Contradictory theories find inconclusive support in it, further confusing an already perplexing problem. In view of all this doubt, and the difficulties with which the subject is still beset, it may not be unprofitable to go over the ground once more, and arrange the documents which allude to non-literary poetry, Latin or Romance, in their chronological order from the first century to the eleventh. While nothing new may be discovered from such a classification it will be useful to have at hand, grouped together, the texts from which the opposing factions draw their partisan arguments.
