On the Translation Strategies of Human-computer Interaction Based on Machine Translation

With the rapid development of language service industry and artificial intelligence technology, machine translation plays a more prominent role in the translation industry. Human-computer interaction translation greatly improves the speed and quality of translation, and pre-translation editing and post-translation editing are two important links and manifestations in human-computer interaction collaborative translation. On the basis of summarizing machine translation problems, this paper proposes translation strategies including replacing well-translated terms in advance, rewriting, addition, omission, and shift via pre-editing and post-editing, which greatly improves the quality of machine translation.

Is transcreation a service or a strategy?

Abstract Transcreation is a practice with a status that has to date not been consolidated in the field of Translation Studies. While some authors consider that the term brings little value to the discipline (Bernal Merino 2006; Gambier and Munday 2014), others define transcreation as a service involving the creative adaptation of marketing and advertising content (Pedersen 2014; TAUS 2019) or as a strategy adopted in creative areas like AVT (Malenova 2017; Chaume 2018), localization (Mangirón and O’Hagan 2006; Crosignani and Ravetto 2011) and literary translation (Lal 1996; De Campos 2013). The above definitions reflect the perspectives of the language services industry and academia. However, the points of view of individual language professionals have not usually been considered when conceptualizing transcreation. The purpose of this paper is to address these perceptions by adopting a social qualitative approach by means of an instrument called “The DTP Survey.” The results of this survey seem to point to a dual definition of transcreation as both a service and a strategy, with both approaches being compatible and not mutually exclusive as they have been in previous characterizations of the practice.

China’s Language Services Industry: Status Quo and Suggestions for Sustainable Development

The language services industry merits investigation, given its increasingly significant role and rapid development in China and even around the world. This paper gives a brief look at the global picture and a close look at the status quo in China. While in the global market, language services tend to be diversified and technology will be the common denominator to success, in China, despite the rapid growth in recent years, the market leaves much to be desired when it comes to technology, language diversity, high-end talent development, and overall competitiveness. To tackle these problems, this paper proposes some measures for China’s language services providers to catch up with their international counterparts and for China’s language services industry to achieve sustainable development.

The Impact of Big Data Technology on Phrase and Syntactic Coherence in English Translation

In the era of big data, data are ubiquitous. The proliferation of data leads to a surge in the demand for communication, which in turn promotes a surge in the demand for language services. Big data technology is a comprehensive technology, and its important feature is a more active technological factor, where technological development and technological innovation dominate, which will have an incalculable impact on the development of the translation industry. In the language service industry, much information that used to be difficult to quantify will be transformed into data for storage and processing, and a large number of complex items to be translated will gradually surface. Therefore, it is the general trend of the translation industry to stimulate and utilize the unexplored values hidden inside the data and develop the blue ocean of the language service industry. Traditional translation researchers are confined to the study of language and text and are not fully aware of it. The huge role played by translation technology in today’s business environment, and the traditional translation theory can hardly describe and explain the new modern translation technology phenomenon and translation technology activities. Whether we are ready for it or not, the rapid development of translation technology in the era of big data will lead to significant changes in translation inquiry and translation teaching on a global scale. The integration and development of translation with cloud computing, big data, the Internet, and artificial intelligence are driving a series of innovations in the traditional translation model. The development of translation technologies and tools is breaking new ground, rapidly expanding into all aspects of the translation industry and triggering disruptive changes in the language service industry.

On Postediting of Machine Translation and Workflow for Undergraduate Translation Program in China

With the improvement in machine translation output quality, postediting of machine translation has made far-reaching impact upon the language service industry. As a result, it has been introduced to translation training to avoid split between academic discipline and profession. However, postediting of machine translation and its application to undergraduate translation program in China are less studied, and few researches have touched on the students’ own perceptions. Based on a literature review on postediting of machine translation, this study is aimed at identifying the vital role of it and then proposing a practical postediting workflow for undergraduate translation education in China. The study adopted a mixed methods approach. Data were collected via online questionnaire responded by students of undergraduate translation program at a university in northwest China and then analyzed from the perspective of technology acceptance model. The results and findings showed that as a promising workflow, postediting of machine translation gained positive responses in general from students who have learnt the basics of translation technology. The themes of negative responses include confusing postediting standard, inconsistent quality, ways to choose machine translation providers, and technical issues. The results and findings indicated that a tailored postediting workflow for undergraduate translation program is feasible. By focusing on undergraduate pedagogical settings in China, this study confirmed the findings of previous studies on the more positive attitude on postediting of machine translation, suggesting that postediting be considered as an important subcompetence in translation education.

Crowdsourcing Used in Higher Education: An Empirical Study on a Sustainable Translation Teaching Mode Based on Crowdsourced Translation

The language service industry needs more qualified translators. The training of qualified translators needs innovation of translation teaching mode. The combination of crowdsourcing and translation teaching can realize the innovation of translation teaching mode. This study developed an empirical study in which such quantitative and qualitative methods are conducted as classroom observation, case analysis, translation quality analysis, questionnaire survey, and email interviews. Participants in the study included university students registered in the English and Translation degrees in Chinese universities. Statistical analyses were carried out with IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (IBM SPSS 26). Validation of the survey instruments, descriptive statistics, and group comparisons were all accomplished. The results demonstrate that the integration of crowdsourcing with translation teaching worked well. The mode has positive significance for exploring learner autonomy, stimulating students’ motivation, improving students’ translation ability, and training qualified translators. The mode is of sustainable value, with the development of AI-driven machine translation technology, and the innovation of translation teaching mode is significant for professional translator training. This mode of translation teaching based on crowdsourcing has a certain reference value for the cultivation of high-quality language service talents and the construction of a new mode of personnel training in the language service industry.

What is Real Transcreation? A Case Study of Transcreation in Corporate Communication Writing

Transcreation, a term merging “translation” and “creation”, has become a buzzword in the language service industry as well as in translation studies. However, pertinent questions with regard to it are: “what is transcreation?” and “what kind of text is a transcreated text?” This paper addresses the first issue by a systemic functional linguistics based survey of definitions from professional translators, language service providers and scholars in translation studies respectively for a real definition of transcreation with descriptions of its metafunctions. Further, by textual analysis in the case study of the Chinese and its English translation corporate profiles of Huawei, a multinational information and communication technology company of China, the paper studies the application of transcreation in corporate communication writing by examining its metafunctions. It is concluded that transcreation requires multi-party’s interplay and produces new constructs in the transcreated texts, which poses both challenges and opportunities to translators. The research findngs prove transcreation’s effectiveness and flexibility in corporate communication and showcase the challenges and opportunities it brings to the translation profession by linking its real definition with its practical use.

A Study on Translation Majors’ Cultivation Mode of “Internet + Language Service”

In recent years, with the continuous development and progress of information technology, international exchanges and cooperation have become more and more frequent. This has also promoted the establishment and development of China’s language service industry, making the translation industry’s production and service methods change a lot. Translation companies are gradually transforming into translation service companies or language service companies, which also puts forward new requirements for language service talents. Nowadays China’s undergraduate education for translation majors falls behind in a certain extent. The cultivation of talents is fairly out of touch with the society, which cannot meet the requirements of social development and construction. Therefore, how to make good use of the “Internet +” environment to build a training model for translation professionals has become urgent for colleges and universities, because it can match the requirements of the market and solve the problem of translation talents’ low quality. The professionalization and specialization of evaluation methods cultivate a group of professional translators who meet the needs of the society in the new era.

Application of Translation Technologies in the Translation of IMTFE Transcripts

Machine translation has grown very rapidly in recent times due to the developments in big data, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing software and techniques. The first generation of Rule-Based Machine Translation has been replaced by fourth generation of Neural Machine Translation based on complex deep learning and networking models. Translation models have also undergone tremendous changes. The traditional translation model fails to meet the needs of the modern language service industry. There still exists doubt whether Translation technologies could enhance the quality in the translation of non-technical texts. So far no one has discussed the application of the technologies in the translation of IMTFE Transcripts. This paper aims to prove that translation technologies can be applied to the translation of IMTFE Transcripts which the author works on. By analyzing the text features of IMTFE Transcripts, and applying different translation technologies in the translation, the author finds that the quality and efficiency of translation have been greatly enhanced. It is concluded that translation technologies can be used to facilitate translation of texts of different kinds. In spite of their drawbacks, translators can still benefit a lot from the adoption of translation technologies.

Research on English Translation based on Computer Technology

With the rapid development of science and technology, computer technology has been applied to all walks of life, including English translation. Through computer technology translation, we can greatly improve the efficiency of translation production, which has an unprecedented impact on the language service industry. At the same time, with the rapid development of global economy, the economy and society put forward higher requirements for the translation industry, which requires us to constantly improve the quality and speed of translation. Therefore, in order to better English translation, computer science and technology has brought a significant basis for it. However, due to the limitations of computer language translation technology, we must adopt post editing method to adjust the machine translation, which will improve the accuracy of translation, such as computer aided technology (hereinafter referred to as CAT) software. First, this paper introduces the main role of computer-aided translation technology. Then, this paper analyzes the important principles of computer-aided translation software. Finally, some suggestions are put forward.

THE GIRL UP PROJECT: A PROPOSAL TO TEACH TRANSCREATION AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT SKILLS

Technology is quickly disrupting the language services industry. These abrupt changes may worsen the employability of translation students, who require new skills to adapt to this changing market. Transcreation, a type of creative translation that mostly takes place in the marketing and advertising areas, can be an empowering area for students in terms of professional development and employability. To familiarize undergraduate translation students with transcreation practices, we have developed the “Girl Up Project”: a situated training initiative oriented to consolidate theoretical concepts on the topic, develop their organizational and creative skills, improve their teamwork abilities and establish a clear connection between the training initiative and the industry.The outcomes of the project seem to confirm that this type of initiative is useful to improve the knowledge of students on transcreation and transcreation project management skills. Research on Cultivation of Computer-aided Translation Talents under the Background of “Internet+”

In recent years, with the rapid development of language service industry, the original simple service has been far from adapting to the new development of the industry. Under the background of "Internet+", the scope of language services has expanded from simple interpretation and translation to the whole language service outsourcing, such as technical writing, website localization, multilingual information processing and other fields. Then we should start to cultivate computer-aided translation talents. At the same time, the requirements for language service practitioners are not only to master oral and written translation skills, but also to master it skills, project experience, market awareness, cross-cultural communication, professional quality, industry knowledge and localization skills, terminology management, translation technology, translation tools, typesetting and printing, translation management and other skills on this basis.

Study of Process-oriented Translation Competence Training in Translation Project Teaching

China has become the second largest economy in the world. Owning to the rising of China's international status, China's language service industry is in a period of rapid growth. In this case, cultivation and training for translation talents is essentially significant. However, it is observed that the traditional infusion teaching is centered on teachers obviously. As a result, the paper introduces specifically the steps of process-oriented teaching approach aiming to train the undergraduate students’ translation competence. On the compassion between infusion education and process-oriented project translation teaching, it is investigated that students benefic from the active learining by achiving translation competence. They have made a significantly higher evaluation in the project translation.

Nesta apresentação, oferecemos uma visão geral do contexto no qual está inserido este número sobre localização e tecnologia digital. Propusemo-nos a tentar explicar por que as tecnologias ainda são um assunto em voga nos Estudos da Tradução e na indústria linguística, apesar de a temática “tecnologias de tradução” permear os discursos há décadas e de registros anteriores já terem apontado a urgência de adaptação dos tradutores caso queiram ser ou manter-se competitivos no mercado. Discutimos brevemente a localização como exemplo da proeminência dessa temática. Também oferecemos um breve resumo dos 13 manuscritos (incluindo artigos, traduções, resenhas e uma entrevista) selecionados para compor este número.

The evolution of interpreters’ perception and application of (codes of) ethics in China since 1949: a sociological and historical perspective

ABSTRACT This paper examines the evolution of interpreters’ perception and application of (codes of) ethics and its impact on the making of a profession (or ‘a relatively autonomous field’ in Bourdieusian terms) in China’s mainland since 1949, from both a sociological and a historical perspective. Using Bourdieu’s theory of practice as an analytical tool, and drawing on email interviews with interpreters, autobiographies and narrations produced by interpreters and institutional documents, in addition to surveying the relevant literature, the author explores how and why the five core ethical principles for interpreters – competence, integrity, fidelity, neutrality, confidentiality – were understood and practised in different ways by interpreters in the past 70 years. The findings indicate that most of these five principles were differently perceived and applied by interpreters in the three historical periods between 1949 and 2019 due to interpreters’ different levels of capitals, state of habitus, and interpreting as, respectively, a heteronomic field (1949–1978), a field moving towards professional autonomy (1979–2009), and a field likely to become a (sub)field of the rising language service industry (2010–2019).

Research on Oral English Teaching System Based on VR in the Background of AI

2016 is a year when AI (Artificial Intelligence) technology has made a significant breakthrough. The language service products of AI and VR (virtual reality) technology are increasingly appearing in the commercial market, which has brought a huge impact on the language service industry. Based on the analysis of the current principles and development status of the language service products of artificial intelligence and VR (virtual reality), this paper attempts to explore the enlightenment of new technology to language service, especially in oral English teaching, while oral English Corpus needs to be built. This research designs a set of oral English training system based on artificial intelligence and VR (virtual reality) technology, which makes oral English teaching conform to the requirements of the times. The research result is that it can improve the efficiency of oral English training.

A Study of English-Chinese Translation of Commercial Advertisements under the Background of “Internet +”

Under the implementation of the national strategy, “Internet +” is closely integrated with various traditional industries and has become one of the main driving forces for the economic development of the industry. For industrial development, “Internet +” provides technical tools, basic platforms, and link elements for building an ecosystem. The translation of commercial advertisements between English and Chinese is an important part of the language service industry. It is a major member of the cultural industry and guarantees the demand for commercial advertisement language services under the “Belt and Road” strategy in China. The combination of “Internet +” and commercial English-Chinese translation can promote the transformation and upgrading of commercial English-Chinese translation services. When translating commercial advertisements between English and Chinese, it is not only just a simple conversion of corresponding code symbols, but also needs to comprehensively consider the language background of national culture, customs and social development. In the context of “Internet +”, the translation needs to reorganize the original information on the premise of ensuring that the semantics are basically equivalent and the functions are similar. With the help of modern computer network technology and cloud computing platform technology, this article builds an Internet-based translation platform to provide support for the translation, thereby achieving good translation results.
