Control patients excreted insignificant amounts of iron in their urine (< 2.0 mg/24 hr), compared with patients with hemochromatosis and hemosiderosis (2.5 to 45 mg/24 hr). Clinical and pathological differentiation of idiopathic hemochromatosis from the hemosiderosis seen with Laennec's cirrhosis was difficult; some patients with the latter exhibited urinary iron excretion patterns similar to patients with hemochromatosis.
