How Koreans Understand Colorfulness, Chroma, Vividness, and Depth

In this study, the relationships between chae-do, the commonly used Korean terminology to describe chromatic attributes, CIE definition for colorfulness, Munsell definition for chroma, Berns’ definition for CIELAB based vividness and depth are investigated. Although only the definitions were presented, without corresponding terminologies, the observers’ responses showed that chae-do is understood very similarly to the definitions of CIE colorfulness and Munsell chroma. Responses for the definitions of vividness and depth also showed high correlation with Berns’ CIELAB based vividness and depth predictions, which shows that definitions were well understood. No correlations were found between the definition of CIE colorfulness and the definition of vividness, which shows that the definition of vividness is understood differently to the definition of colorfulness. Comparing the response with color appearance model predictions, the responses showed good correlation with the predictions. Especially, colorfulness definition responses showed the highest coefficient correlation with CIELAB-based Berns’ depth prediction, implying the possibility of colorfulness predictor modification for better prediction. The findings can be further investigated to observers from other non-English speaking countries and collect meaningful cross-cultural color appearance data.

Upon the human exploration era of the Moon, this paper introduces lunar topography and geologic fundamentals to space scientists. The origin of scientific terminology for the lunar topography was briefly summarized, and the extension of the current Korean terminology is suggested. Specifically, we suggest the most representative lunar topography that are useful to laymen as 1 ocean (Oceanus Procellarum), 10 maria (Mare Imbrium, Mare Serenitatis, Mare Tranuillitatis, Mare Nectaris, Mare Fecundatis, Mare Crisium, Mare Vaporium, Mare Cognitum, Mare Humorum, Mare Nubium), 6 great craters (Tyco, Copernicus, Kepler, Aristachus, Stebinus, Langrenus). We also suggest Korean terms for highland, maria, mountains, crater, rille, rima, graben, dome, lava tube, wrinkle ridge, trench, rupes, and regolith. In addition, we introduce the standard model for the lunar interior and typical rocks. According to the standard model on the basis of historical impact events, the lunar geological eras are classified as Pre-Nectarian, Nectarian, Imbrian, Erathostenesian, and Copernican in chronologic order. Finally, we summarize the latest discovery records on the water on the Moon, and introduce the concept of water extraction from the lunar soil, which is to be developed by the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM).

Case Study on the User Interface of GPS Plotters to Enhance Their Usability

In 2019, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) prescribed guidelines to standardize the user interface (UI) of navigation equipment such as radio detection and ranging (RADAR) and the electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS), which mandate the unification of various terminologies and icons to improve usability. However, comprehensive studies on the operability and standardization of global positioning system (GPS) plotters, which are auxiliary equipment installed across various domestic and commercial vessels for navigational purposes, have not been conducted. Therefore, we performed a case study to identify the user requirements for standardizing the UI of GPS plotters in South Korea. Additionally, we conducted a survey to ascertain the frequency of use of the navigational functions in a GPS plotter, in which, several deck officers and captains participated. The frequently used navigational functions that were subsequently identified confirmed the need for standardization of the UI. Furthermore, the users requested the standardization of the menus of these functions using Korean terminologies. Hence, we attempted to derive standardized items that can be applied to both the functions of the GPS plotters and the navigation information obtained, which can contribute to the improvement of the UI across the different types of plotters.

Additive manufacturing processes have been called by a wide variety of terms since the early days of development. As these names are often mixed academically and industrially, the demand for standardization of terms has gradually increased. Accordingly, the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) are in the process of establishing standards for the names and definitions of important terms related to additive manufacturing. Although Korea has also begun to establish KS standards based on ISO/ASTM standards, the Korean language and definitions of important terms related to additive manufacturing as defined by ISO/ASTM have not been fully organized. Therefore, the similar terms defined in ISO/ASTM in many academic and industrial literature are called by various Korean terms. Thus, this work deals with suggestions on the Korean terminologies and standardization of important terms related to additive manufacturing based on ISO/ASTM standards. Especially, this paper deals with the Additive Manufacturing and seven sub-process classifications.

Korean Neurological Terminology

Experts have communicated and developed field of study through scientific terminology. However, medical terminologies are no longer used only by experts. As technology advances and society becomes more complex, the public encounter medical terminology more often. Therefore, medical experts need to revise the medical terms in simple and easy way to facilitate communication with the public. Korean Neurological Association has been make an efforts to manage the Korean terminologies in field of neurology. In this paper, we summarized principles of the use in Korean neurological terminologies, and frequently misused terms.

The Purpose of this paper is to draw a blueprint for the standardization policy of South Korean and North Korean terminology at the time of reunification of two Koreas. Firstly, this paper examines the necessity of South Korean and North Korean terminology standardization and seeks the future direction of standardization. Then, the objects, principles, system, and procedure of standardization enforcement are discussed, specifically focussing on the terms that are urgently standardized at the time of reunification, namely administrative terms(as public language and terminology) and educational terms(concluding vocabulary in subject and vocabulary of instruction). Finally, this paper concludes by proposing two supporting systems for the South Korean and North Korean terminology standardization. These two supporting systems, that is, the committee for terminology standardization and the on-line management system for terminology standardization, consider efficiency of policy and domain expertise.

Scientific Framework for Research on Disaster and Mass Casualty Incident in Korea: Building Consensus Using Delphi Method

We aimed to determine the scientific framework for research on disaster and mass casualty incident (MCI) in Korea, especially Korean terminology, feasible definition, and epidemiologic indices. The two staged policy Delphi method was performed by instructors of National Disaster Life Support (NDLS®) with the constructed questionnaire containing items based on the literature review. The first-stage survey was conducted by 11 experts through two rounds of survey for making issue and option. The second-stage survey was conducted by 35 experts for making a generalized group based consensus. Experts were selected among instructors of National Disaster Life Support Course. Through two staged Delphi survey experts made consensus: 1) the Korean terminology "jaenan" with "disaster" and "dajung-sonsang-sago" with "MCI"; 2) the feasible definition of "disaster" as the events that have an effect on one or more municipal local government area (city-county-district) or results in ≥ 10 of death or ≥ 50 injured victims; 3) the feasible definition of MCI as the events that result in ≥ 6 casualties including death; 4) essential 31 epidemiologic indices. Experts could determine the scientific framework in Korea for research on disaster medicine, considering the distinct characteristics of Korea and current research trends.

Korean Terminology for Frailty

“Frailty in geriatrics is thought to encompass a variety of phenotypes not fully explained by current definitions of disease or disability. In Korea, frail has been translated using various meanings and terminologies, for example, weakness, senescence, vulnerable, requiring care, and functional impairment. However, none of these expressions alone fully represents the frailty that we understand as the geriatric syndrome. Further, among the Asian countries that use Chinese characters in their language, different characters are used to express fraility; and again, none of these expressions fully represents frailty. This may suggest some linguistic differences between Asian and Western countries.

In terminology, the predominance of nouns is an incontestable phenomenon. In Korean terminologies, this predominance of nouns is even more notable because the meaning and function associated with adjectives in Indo-European languages are often realized in noun form. However, the rarer adjectival terms are, the more they are used in restrictive, repetitive ways in specialized domains. Thus, it is important to distinguish the different senses of these terms. In this work, focusing on semantic characterization in terminology, we distinguish the different senses of adjectival medical terms by applying lexico-semantic criteria (L’Homme 2004a) and by classifying the arguments of the adjective into semantic categories (Bae et al. 2002). With this work, we aim to enrich terminological descriptions found in Korean medical dictionnaries by demonstrating empirically a method for distinguishing the different senses of adjectival medical terms. To achieve our goal, we used the KAIST corpus, composed of medical texts (1,500,000 eojeols), and a group of texts on various subjects (40,000,000 eojeols).

In Korean terminologies, adjectival terms are rare, and the meaning and function associated with adjectives in Indo-European languages are often realized instead in noun form. However, the rarer adjectival terms are, the more they are used in restrictive and repetitive ways in specialized domains. Thus, it is important to distinguish the different senses of these terms. In this work, focusing on semantic modeling in terminology, we distinguish the different senses of adjectival medical terms by applying lexico-semantic criteria (L`Homme, 2004a) and by classifying the semantic category of the arguments of the adjective (Bae and others, 2002). The result not only contributes to enriching medical terminology, but also empirically demonstrates a method for distinguishing the different senses of adjectival medical terms. 형용사를 이용한 자동 주관적 평가 시스템의 개발

The objective of this research is the development of the Automatic Subjective Assessment System (ASAS). The proposed subjective assessment system is designed to evaluate human emotion and sensibility (or in Korean terminology) with subjective responses of volunteers about the experiment of emotion and sensibility. Once volunteers enter their subjective responses about the experiment into the developed system, the proposed system can automatically generate statistical results of human emotion and sensibility using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Then, the system stores the statistical results in the database which will be open to public through internet. The proposed system will be integrated into the universal gamsung assessment system for evaluation of human emotion and sensibility.
