The aim of the article is to study the theoretical and practical potential of using information genres in the library journalists’ activity. Research methods. In this article, methods of analogy, comparison, systematisation, deduction and abstraction are applied. The scientific novelty is based on the fact that the offered research work studies connections between human knowledge of news media and methods they use to form news. It is found out that people with a higher level of media knowledge are more likely to include social media in their news repertoire, but not as their main or only one source. Secondly, it is determined that the information of media sources is positively related to editorial bases. The degree of participation of public libraries in public journalism is studied, particularly in conditions where media coverage of certain information decreases. It is proved that the mass involvement of librarians in this activity on an ongoing basis allows to raise an issue of professional training programmes for library journalists, taking into account the fact that this kind of work requires certain knowledge, competence and skills. As a result, its quality affects the reputation of the library. Main conclusions. Nowadays, one of the features of modern society is “information consumption”. Libraries are focused on creating an educational environment, using ICT, media education and qualitative journalistic work of librarians. Journalism is close to the activity of librarians. They create notes, sketches and reports for websites and social networks, conduct interviews for podcasts, write articles for industry press. It can be said with confidence that library journalists use social networks quite widely in their professional activities. So, social media tools are mainly used as a substitute for other information delivery channels. If today librarians are faced with the task of changing the image of the library and working with the stereotypes of public society, then it is up to library journalists to cope with it.
