Investigating Knowledge Management Practices in a Successful Research and Development Organization

In this paper after a review on the concept and literature of knowledge management, the conceptual model of a successful knowledge management system that is currently being applied in a research and development (R&D) aerospace organization is presented and discussed. The main contribution of the paper is presenting the model in its useful and practical status without becoming involved in theoretical discussions that have different shapes but similar meanings.

Collaborative Integration of Bioinformatics Knowledge Management System and Mobile Wireless Devices

Knowledge Management System (KMS) currently becomes a common medium to distribute knowledge by using the Information Technology (IT) as enabler tools for everyone to reach, share with among the members, and used it from any workplace in the world at any time. In the context of bioinformatics community of practice (CoP) is also has opportunities to leverage and share their knowledge with collaborative technology to create, gather, access, organize, distribute and disseminate the knowledge among them for various purposes such as learning process, research and development (R&D) and others. This paper describes on the theoretical concepts and approach of integrating mobile wireless devices into Bioinformatics KMS that could be implemented in institution by demonstrating on how the framework of KMS model that is developed using relevance software. The achievement of conducting mobile wireless devices into Bioinformatics KMS framework is an added value for the CoP in the institution that needs to implement the Bioinformatics KMS, which can help them to achieve their aims and mission statements. The emphasis also will be given to the activities for each stage in the KM life cycle including the critical success factor (CSF) in order to make sure that Bioinformatics KMS initiatives will deliver competitive advantage to the CoP in the institutions.

Research on the Application of Intelligent Knowledge Management in Military Education

At present, the informatization construction of military education has been fully carried out and preliminary results have been achieved. However, from the perspective of knowledge management, the existing construction can not fully meet the needs of training new high-quality military personnel. This paper expounds the basic concepts of knowledge management, analyzes the relationship between military education and knowledge management, and introduces the general situation of the US military intelligent knowledge network and put forward an intelligent knowledge management system model based on cloud platform is proposed.

Based on the literature of knowledge management (KM), this paper reports on the progress of developing a new knowledge management system (KMS) model with components architecture that are distributed over the widely-recognised socio-technical system (STS) aspects to guide developers for selecting the most applicable components to support their KM practice in learning organisations (LO). This new model will bridge the literature gap found in KMS components which are not clearly defined, nor arranged and categorised for the most efficient use inside the organisation. Without this model, KMS developers should expect deficiency in their design due to the possibility of missing or misinterpreting important components for the intended design. Therefore, with this new model, the much clearer approach is achieved by ensuring that all KMS components are clearly identified and used to guarantee KMS effectiveness in the organisation. This research leads to a further study to test and confirm the new model for KMS development in LO's.

The paper proposes a general formula for developing a knowledge management system. Knowledge management focuses on the creation and use of intellectual resources as well as practical skills—a company’s intangible assets. These assets relate to various scientific areas and empirical applications, and they constitute a significant source of competitive advantage. Knowledge is a structured set of information—a universal or specialised collection of factual material—which is used in the processes of corporate functioning and development. Knowledge is the effect of the learning process; it may result from buy-sell transactions (intellectual property, inventions and copy rights), or it constitutes a field of management. The paper presents: the interpretations of the concepts of knowledge capital and knowledge management systems, a multi-aspect knowledge management system model, a concept for development based on restructuring and innovation, and the criteria for assessing corporate development. The above issues are part of the methodology of corporate development management. Its major objective is to stimulate scientific, technological, economic and organizational advancement.

Perancangan Customer Knowledge Management pada PT Pandawa Maju Perkasa

In the era of global trade, more countries want a quality of product with optimal price. PT Pandawa Maju Perkasa engaged in export trade services requires an application that can bridge the communication between the customer and the company. It can also create appropriate knowledge to present the product to the customer. Knowledge of the product obtained will be shared to the customer as company's marketing activities. In addition, critics and suggestions are very necessary for the improvement of customer service of the company. Research in this study was done by analyzing business process, designing model of knowledge management system, and designing system model. The design of the system made consisted of making class diagrams, use case diagrams, sequence diagrams, and user interface. The design of the CKM system will help the company capture customer demand for the goods they want, the communication between the customer and the company can be well established, critics and suggestions facility made is used to improve services to customers.

Ontological approach for context-oriented knowledge management in smart environment

The paper describes ontological approach to context-oriented knowledge management in smart environment. A conceptual model of knowledge management system in smart environment has been developed. The knowledge management system for intelligent conference management system in smart environment has been developed. This system has been successfully tested in the FRUCT association conferences.

An empirical test of a contingency model of KMS effectiveness

This article presents a contingency model of knowledge management system (KMS) effectiveness and reports the results of its empirical test. The conceptual model was developed to include the components of KMS perceptions and usage (as indicators of adoption) and its antecedents and consequences. The model was tested in the context of individual decision making. Data were collected by a survey of 372 knowledge workers across a variety of Turkish industry sectors and were analysed through structural equation modelling. The results provide fairly good empirical support for the proposed theoretical model when using approximate fit measures. The results suggest that system sophistication and knowledge worker self-efficacy, but not decision task complexity, influence the perceived benefits and usage of the system, which in turn affect net benefits in terms of knowledge and performance (individual and organisational).

Effects of Knowledge Management System in Disaster Management through RFID Technology Realization

Based on experiences through different disasters, particularly earthquakes in Iran, we can assume that one of the main problems is lack of an exact and efficient identification system through which the victims, especially all those under the debris can be identified. Type of knowledge related to the disastrous situation and the relevant technology to handle the knowledge, which can speed up the search, rescue, relief, and as a whole Disaster Management process are highly important. In this paper, we suggest Radio Frequency Identification System used in coordination with Oracle as Data Base Management System with a dedicated network system. Finally, due to the importance of technology and knowledge type and sharing, a Knowledge Management System model is proposed. The proposed model intends to focus on knowledge, human and technology-related issues of Emergency Coordination Center. Emergency Coordination Center is Disaster Management headquarters center in which Knowledge Management System model is designed to address its relevant issues and challenges.

Quality Knowledge Management Facing Collaborative Products Manufacturing

A Framework of Collaborative Knowledge Management System in Open Source Software Development Environment

The global economy crisis reveals the advantages of Open Source Software (OSS). Software developers benefit not only from reduced cost of acquisition, but also access to source code and components. In this aspect, knowledge sharing among developers are immensely important in all facets of System Development Life Cycle (SDLC). Feller and Fitzgerald (2000) raised the critical questions on what life-cycle underpins the OSS model and what is the best methodology to support the OSS as well as what toolkit support OSS methodology. This paper shall discuss the formulation of Knowledge Management System (KMS) framework for sharing knowledge in OSS using SDLC from the planning phase until the maintenance phase. An initial fact finding survey was conducted on selected OSS developers in Malaysia to analyze the current usage and acceptance of OSS. The results are quite unexpected, with many OSS developers are still not fully using OSS tools in SDLC stages. The proposed KMS model is envisaged to allow OSS Community-of-Practice to share the OSS knowledge for the whole SDLC.

From rhetoric towards a model of practical knowledge management systems

PurposeThis paper aims to investigate the factors influencing the adoption and diffusion of knowledge management systems (KMSs) in Australia.Design/methodology/approachA qualitative field study was undertaken, in which six Australian organizations of various sizes, all in various stages of KMS adoption and diffusion, were studied via face‐to‐face interviews with key personnel in the organizations.FindingsA comprehensive combined model of adoption and diffusion of KMS was developed and is presented in detail.Practical limitations/implicationsThis paper explains how the combined model can be used for practical applications in companies that are embarking on KMS adoption and diffusion.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the KMS literature by taking a qualitative research approach to develop a comprehensive model.
