Electrolyte Effects in Electrocatalytic Kinetics†

Comprehensive SummaryTuning electrolyte properties is a widely recognized strategy to enhance activity and selectivity in electrocatalysis, drawing increasing attention in this domain. Despite extensive experimental and theoretical studies, debates persist about how various electrolyte components influence electrocatalytic reactions. We offer a concise review focusing on current discussions, especially the contentious roles of cations. This article further examines how different factors affect the interfacial solvent structure, particularly the hydrogen‐bonding network, and delves into the microscopic kinetics of electron and proton‐coupled electron transfer. We also discuss the overarching influence of solvents from a kinetic modeling perspective, aiming to develop a robust correlation between electrolyte structure and reactivity. Lastly, we summarize ongoing research challenges and suggest potential directions for future studies on electrolyte effects in electrocatalysis. Key ScientistsIn 1956, Marcus theory was developed to describe the mechanism of outer‐sphere electron transfer (OS‐ET). In 1992, Nocera et al. directly measured proton‐coupled electron transfer (PCET) kinetics for the first time, and their subsequent research in 1995 investigated the effects of proton motion on electron transfer (ET) kinetics. In 1999 and 2000, Hammes‐schiffer et al. developed the multistate continuum theory for multiple charge reactions and deduced the rate expressions for nonadiabatic PCET reactions in solution, laying the theoretical foundation for the analysis of PCET kinetics in electrochemical processes. In 2006, Saveant et al. verified the concerted proton and electron transfer (CPET) mechanism in the oxidation of phenols coupled with intramolecular amine‐driven proton transfer (PT). Their subsequent work in 2008 reported the pH‐dependent pathways of electrochemical oxidation of phenols.Electrolyte effects in electrocatalysis have gained emphasis in recent years. In 2009, Markovic's pioneering work proposed non‐covalent interactions between hydrated alkaline cations and adsorbed OH species in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR)/hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR). In 2011, Markovic et al. significantly enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity in alkaline solution by improving water dissociation, which was assumed to dominate the sluggish HER kinetics in such media. In comparation, Yan et al. applied hydrogen binding energy (HBE) theory in 2015 to explain the pH‐dependent HER/HOR activity. Cations play a significant role in regulating the selectivity and activity of carbon dioxide reduction (CO2RR). In 2016 and 2017, Karen Chan et al. introduced the electric field generated by solvated cations to explain the cation effects on electrochemical CO2RR. Conversely, in 2021, Koper et al. suggested that short‐range electrostatic interactions between partially desolvated metal cations and CO2 stabilized CO2 and promoted CO2RR.Recent researches have combined the exploration of the electrical double layer (EDL) structure with theoretical analysis of PCET kinetics. In 2019, Huang et al. developed a microscopic Hamiltonian model to quantitatively understand the sluggish hydrogen electrocatalysis in alkaline media. In 2021, two meticulous studies from Shao‐Horn's group analyzed the effects of cations on reorganization energy and the impacts of hydrogen bonds between proton donors and acceptors on proton tunneling kinetics, respectively. Electrolyte effects on proton transport process were researched in recent years. In 2022, Hu et al. and Chen et al. proposed that the cation‐induced electric field distribution and pH‐dependent hydrogen bonding network connectivity played essential roles in proton transport, separately.

Modeling Interfacial Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer Reactions Involving Imidazolium Proton Donors

Proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) is an elementary reaction that plays a pivotal role in various electrochemical energy conversion and storage processes. PCET reactions involving nonaqueous proton donors are of interest for applications in energy storage such as redox flow batteries, as well as in CO2 and O2 reduction catalysis. Yet, there remains much to be understood about the molecular reactivity of these systems. In this talk, I will describe periodic density functional theory (DFT) studies of interfacial PCET reactions involving different imidazolium proton donors on Pt(111) electrode surfaces.The imidazole conjugate bases adsorb strongly to the electrode surface; however, this adsorption behavior varies with isomers that feature distinct proton positions and with different functional substituent groups. Because the adsorption of imidazole conjugate bases could affect reactivity, these models are used as a foundation to understand the intrinsic PCET kinetics of these systems. The Volmer and Heyrovsky steps of hydrogen evolution reaction are two of the most basic heterogeneous electrochemical PCET reactions and are therefore chosen as model interfacial PCET reactions in this study. Potential-dependent reaction energies and activation barriers are calculated using the charge extrapolation method, where the electrode potential is tuned by modifying proton coverage for different-sized unit cells. This approach is used to develop relationships between PCET reaction thermodynamics and kinetics through Brønsted–Evans–Polanyi (BEP) relationships for different imidazoles, where BEP slopes are analogs to charge transfer coefficients in the Butler–Volmer equation. Investigating reaction parameters influencing charge transfer kinetics at the electrode-electrolyte interface is crucial for designing efficient energy storage systems, impacting overall device performance. These studies show trends in the kinetic behavior of different functionalized imidazoles, which can aid in the design of catalytic and energy storage systems.

Fe-N co-doped carbon nanofibers with Fe3C decoration for water activation induced oxygen reduction reaction

ABSTRACT Proton activity at the electrified interface is central to the kinetics of proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactions in electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Here, we construct an efficient Fe3C water activation site in Fe-N co-doped carbon nanofibers (Fe3C-Fe1/CNT) using an electrospinning-pyrolysis-etching strategy to improve interfacial hydrogen bonding interactions with oxygen intermediates during ORR. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory studies identified delocalized electrons as key to water activation kinetics. Specifically, the strong electronic perturbation of the Fe–N4 sites by Fe3C disrupts the symmetric electron density distribution, allowing more free electrons to activate the dissociation of interfacial water, thereby promoting hydrogen bond formation. This process ultimately controls the PCET kinetics for enhanced ORR. The Fe3C-Fe1/CNT catalyst demonstrates a half-wave potential of 0.83 V in acidic media and 0.91 V in alkaline media, along with strong performance in H2-O2 fuel cells and Al-air batteries.

Transition from Sequential to Concerted Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer of Water Oxidation on Semiconductor Photoanodes.

Accelerating proton transfer has been demonstrated as key to boosting water oxidation on semiconductor photoanodes. Herein, we study proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) of water oxidation on five typical photoanodes [i.e., α-Fe2O3, BiVO4, TiO2, plasmonic Au/TiO2, and nickel-iron oxyhydroxide (Ni1-xFexOOH)-modified silicon (Si)] by combining the rate law analysis of H2O molecules with the H/D kinetic isotope effect (KIE) and operando spectroscopic studies. An unexpected and universal half-order kinetics is observed for the rate law analysis of H2O, referring to a sequential proton-electron transfer pathway, which is the rate-limiting factor that causes the sluggish water oxidation performance. Surface modification of the Ni1-xFexOOH electrocatalyst is observed to break this limitation and exhibits a normal first-order kinetics accompanied by much enhanced H/D KIE values, facilitating the turnover frequency of water oxidation by 1 order of magnitude. It is the first time that Ni1-xFexOOH is found to be a PCET modulator. The rate law analysis illustrates an effective strategy for modulating PCET kinetics of water oxidation on semiconductor surfaces.

Boosting the Proton-coupled Electron Transfer via Fe-P Atomic Pair for Enhanced Electrochemical CO2 Reduction.

Single-atom catalysts exhibit superior CO2 -to-CO catalytic activity, but poor kinetics of proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) steps still limit the overall performance toward the industrial scale. Here, we constructed a Fe-P atom paired catalyst onto nitrogen doped graphitic layer (Fe1 /PNG) to accelerate PCET step. Fe1 /PNG delivers an industrial CO current of 1 A with FECO over 90 % at 2.5 V in a membrane-electrode assembly, overperforming the CO current of Fe1 /NG by more than 300 %. We also decrypted the synergistic effects of the P atom in the Fe-P atom pair using operando techniques and density functional theory, revealing that the P atom provides additional adsorption sites for accelerating water dissociation, boosting the hydrogenation of CO2 , and enhancing the activity of CO2 reduction. This atom-pair catalytic strategy can modulate multiple reactants and intermediates to break through the inherent limitations of single-atom catalysts.

Multiphase Porous Electrode Theory for the Next Generation of SOFC/SOEC Electrodes

The mixed-ionic electronic conduction (MIEC) of gadolinium doped ceria (CGO) under reduced oxygen conditions makes it an excellent fuel electrode material for SOFC/SOEC applications. As part of a composite electrode (Ni/CGO), the nickel phase offers a fast electronic conduction pathway to the current collector and may act as an electrocatalyst at the three-phase boundary. Although the Ni/CGO cermet provides superior electrochemical performance compared with older technologies such as Ni/YSZ, the models used to study MIEC materials do not capture the unique transport and kinetic physics which makes them an excellent choice for the next generation of fuel electrodes. Within the framework of multiphase porous electrode theory, this work provides a novel set of differential-algebraic equations which captures the effects of the activation overpotential on electronic defect concentration, electrostatic surface potential and ionic transport to accurately predict the current-voltage behaviour of the Ni/CGO electrode. Moreover, through concerted electron and proton tunnelling events, we unify the theory of the electrostatic surface potential with proton-coupled electron transfer kinetics.

Designs of Tandem Catalysts and Cascade Catalytic Systems for CO2 Upgrading

AbstractUpgrading CO2 into multi‐carbon (C2+) compounds through the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) offers a practical approach to mitigate atmospheric CO2 while simultaneously producing high value chemicals. The reaction pathways for C2+ production involve multi‐step proton‐coupled electron transfer (PCET) and C−C coupling processes. By increasing the surface coverage of adsorbed protons (*Had) and *CO intermediates, the reaction kinetics of PCET and C−C coupling can be accelerated, thereby promoting C2+ production. However, *Had and *CO are competitively adsorbed intermediates on monocomponent catalysts, making it difficult to break the linear scaling relationship between the adsorption energies of the *Had/*CO intermediate. Recently, tandem catalysts consisting of multicomponents have been developed to improve the surface coverage of *Had or *CO by enhancing water dissociation or CO2‐to‐CO production on auxiliary sites. In this context, we provide a comprehensive overview of the design principles of tandem catalysts based on reaction pathways for C2+ products. Moreover, the development of cascade CO2RR catalytic systems that integrate CO2RR with downstream catalysis has expanded the range of potential CO2 upgrading products. Therefore, we also discuss recent advancements in cascade CO2RR catalytic systems, highlighting the challenges and perspectives in these systems.

Proton-coupled electron transfer at SOFC electrodes.

Understanding the charge transfer processes at solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) electrodes is critical to designing more efficient and robust materials. Activation losses at SOFC electrodes have been widely attributed to the ambipolar migration of charges at the mixed ionic-electronic conductor-gas interface. Empirical Butler-Volmer kinetics based on the transition state theory is often used to model the current-voltage relationship, where charged particles transfer classically over an energy barrier. However, the hydrogen oxidation/water electrolysis reaction H2(g) + O2- ⇌ H2O(g) + 2e- must be modeled through concerted electron and proton tunneling events, where we unify the theory of the electrostatic surface potential with proton-coupled electron transfer kinetics. We derive a framework for the reaction rate that depends on the electrostatic surface potential, adsorbate dipole moment, the electronic structure of the electron donor/acceptor, and vibronic states of the hydrogen species. This theory was used to study the current-voltage characteristics of the Ni/gadolinium-doped ceria electrode in H2/H2O(g), where we find excellent validation of this novel model. These results yield the first reported quantification of the solvent reorganization energy for an SOFC material and suggest that the three-phase boundary mechanism is the dominant pathway for charge transfer at cermet electrodes.

Key Roles of Interfacial OH- ion Distribution on Proton Coupled Electron Transfer Kinetics Toward Urea Oxidation Reaction.

Enhancing alkaline urea oxidation reaction (UOR) activity is essential to upgrade renewable electrolysis systems. As a core step of UOR, proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) determines the overall performance, and accelerating its kinetic remains a challenge. In this work, a newly raised electrocatalyst of NiCoMoCuOx Hy with derived multi-metal co-doping (oxy)hydroxide species during electrochemical oxidation states is reported, which ensures considerable alkaline UOR activity (10/500mA cm-2 at 1.32/1.52V vs RHE, respectively). Impressively, comprehensive studies elucidate the correlation between the electrode-electrolyte interfacial microenvironment and the electrocatalytic urea oxidation behavior. Specifically, NiCoMoCuOx Hy featured with dendritic nanostructure creates a strengthened electric field distribution. This structural factor prompts the local OH- enrichment in electrical double layer (EDL), so that the dehydrogenative oxidation of the catalyst is directly reinforced to facilitate the subsequent PCET kinetics of nucleophilic urea, resulting in high UOR performance. In practical utilization, NiCoMoCuOx Hy -driven UOR coupled cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2 RR), and harvested high value-added products of H2 and C2 H4 , respectively. This work clarifies a novel mechanism to improve electrocatalytic UOR performance through structure-induced interfacial microenvironment modulation.

The Contribution of Proton-Donor pKa on Reactivity Profiles of [FeFe]-hydrogenases.

The [FeFe]-hydrogenases are enzymes that catalyze the reversible activation of H2 coupled to the reduction–oxidation of electron carriers. Members of the different taxonomic groups of [FeFe]-hydrogenases display a wide range of preference, or bias, for H2 oxidation or H2 production reactions, despite sharing a common catalytic cofactor, or H-cluster. Identifying the properties that control reactivity remains an active area of investigation, and models have emerged that include diversity in the catalytic site coordination environments and compositions of electron transfer chains. The kinetics of proton-coupled electron transfer at the H-cluster might be expected to be a point of control of reactivity. To test this hypothesis, systematic changes were made to the conserved cysteine residue that functions in proton exchange with the H-cluster in the three model enzymes: CaI, CpII, and CrHydA1. CaI and CpII both employ electron transfer accessory clusters but differ in bias, whereas CrHydA1 lacks accessory clusters having only the H-cluster. Changing from cysteine to either serine (more basic) or aspartate (more acidic) modifies the sidechain pKa and thus the barrier for the proton exchange step. The reaction rates for H2 oxidation or H2 evolution were surveyed and measured for model [FeFe]-hydrogenases, and the results show that the initial proton-transfer step in [FeFe]-hydrogenase is tightly coupled to the control of reactivity; a change from cysteine to more basic serine favored H2 oxidation in all enzymes, whereas a change to more acidic aspartate caused a shift in preference toward H2 evolution. Overall, the changes in reactivity profiles were profound, spanning 105 in ratio of the H2 oxidation-to-H2 evolution rates. The fact that the change in reactivity follows a common trend implies that the effect of changing the proton-transfer residue pKa may also be framed as an effect on the scaling relationship between the H-cluster di(thiolmethyl)amine (DTMA) ligand pKa and Em values of the H-cluster. Experimental observations that support this relationship, and how it relates to catalytic function in [FeFe]-hydrogenases, are discussed.

Rate and Mechanism of Electrochemical Formation of Surface-Bound Hydrogen on Pt(111) Single Crystals.

The formation of surface-bound hydrogen from one proton and one electron plays an enabling role in renewable hydrogen production. Quantifying the surface-bound hydrogen formation, however, requires decoupling the delicate interplay of numerous processes. We study cyclic voltammetry (CV) at fast scan rates to characterize the rate constant for the surface-bound hydrogen formation (also known as underpotential deposition hydrogen, UPD Had). We find that the formation of Had on Pt(111) single crystals is ∼100× faster in acid than in base. Reaction-order analysis indicates that the formation of Had occurs as a standard proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reaction in acid, whereas in base, it displays a pH-independent rate constant, indicating the presence of a chemical step such as the reorganization of interfacial water. Our results provide a methodology for quantifying the interfacial PCET kinetics and reveal the mechanistic nature of the UPD Had formation as the reason the hydrogen evolution electrocatalysis on Pt is faster in acid than in base.

Enhancing oxygen reduction electrocatalysis by tuning interfacial hydrogen bonds

Proton activity at the electrified interface is central to the kinetics of proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactions for making chemicals and fuels. Here we employ a library of protic ionic liquids in an interfacial layer on platinum and gold to alter local proton activity, where the intrinsic oxygen-reduction reaction (ORR) activity is enhanced up to fivefold, exhibiting a volcano-shaped dependence on the pKa of the ionic liquid. The enhanced ORR activity is attributed to strengthened hydrogen bonds between ORR products and ionic liquids with comparable pKas, resulting in favourable PCET kinetics. This proposed mechanism is supported by in situ surface-enhanced Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and our simulation of PCET kinetics based on computed proton vibrational wavefunctions at the hydrogen-bonding interface. These findings highlight opportunities for using non-covalent interactions between hydrogen-bonded structures and solvation environments at the electrified interface to tune the kinetics of ORR and beyond. Understanding the role of hydrogen bonds at the electrode interface is important for controlling the kinetics of the oxygen-reduction reaction. Here the authors modify gold and platinum surfaces with a series of protic ionic liquids to show that pKa can be used to optimize proton-coupled electron transfer through hydrogen bonding.

Theoretical Study of Radical Inactivation, LOX Inhibition, and Iron Chelation: The Role of Ferulic Acid in Skin Protection against UVA Induced Oxidative Stress.

Ferulic acid (FA) is used in skin formulations for protection against the damaging actions of the reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by UVA radiation. Possible underlying protective mechanisms are not fully elucidated. By considering the kinetics of proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) and radical-radical coupling (RRC) mechanisms, it appears that direct scavenging could be operative, providing that a high local concentration of FA is present at the place of •OH generation. The resulting FA phenoxyl radical, after the scavenging of a second •OH and keto-enol tautomerization of the intermediate, produces 5-hydroxyferulic acid (5OHFA). Inhibition of the lipoxygenase (LOX) enzyme, one of the enzymes that catalyse free radical production, by FA and 5OHFA were analysed. Results of molecular docking calculations indicate favourable binding interactions of FA and 5OHFA with the LOX active site. The exergonicity of chelation reactions of the catalytic Fe2+ ion with FA and 5OHFA indicate the potency of these chelators to prevent the formation of •OH radicals via Fenton-like reactions. The inhibition of the prooxidant LOX enzyme could be more relevant mechanism of skin protection against UVA induced oxidative stress than iron chelation and assumed direct scavenging of ROS.

Bioinorganic Platforms for Sensing, Biomimicry, and Energy Catalysis

Bioinorganic chemistry is a broad field with multiple branches. In this Highlight Review, the newest excitements in the branch of Bioinorganic Platforms are reviewed. Artificial bioinorganic platforms come in mesmerizing flavors, in particular the following 5 types are the major focus of this Highlight Review. First, single-stranded and double-stranded DNA, RNA, PNA, and their hybrids can be attached to Au electrodes for in vitro biosensing purposes as well as real-time monitoring of DNA repair processes via magnetoelectrochemistry. Second, Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms can be grown into interdigitated array (IDA) electrodes to investigate electron transport mechanisms in vivo. Third, protein films can be formed on glassy carbon (GC) electrodes to examine the effect of electrostatics on the redox behavior of metalloenzymes. Fourth, lipid-covered hybrid bilayer membrane (HBM) systems can be constructed to control the thermodynamics and kinetics of proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) steps important to renewable energy schemes. Fifth, metal complexes can be physisorbed onto highly porous carbon powder as facile oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts.

Low-energy-consumption electrochemical CO2 capture driven by biomimetic phenazine derivatives redox medium

To reduce the energy consumption of CO2-capture methods, proton carriers can be used to drive the CO2 capture in a pH-swing way via the proton coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactions, which are electrochemically regenerable by electrolysis, surpassing the energy-intensive thermal regeneration of traditional monoethanolamine (MEA) absorption method in terms of energy efficiency. However, the low solubility of PCET organics limits its CO2 capture capacity and thus the application. We develop a low energy consuming, high-capacity CO2-capture cell using a phenazine-based organic as the proton carrier as the PCET redox medium, which has high proton capacity and fast PCET kinetics. The quasi-reversible redox-PCET of the phenazine derivative effectively swings the pH of NaHCO3/Na2CO3 aqueous electrolyte at the cathode and the anode, which work as the CO2 absorption/desorption half-cell respectively. This electrochemical CO2-capture cell with an optimal derivative (7,8-dihydroxyphenazine-2-sulfonic acid, noted as DHPS) demonstrates a 95.8% average current efficiency at 10 mA cm−2 and a superior low-electrolysis energy consumption of 0.49 GJ per ton of CO2.

Role of Proton Diffusion in the Nonexponential Kinetics of Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer from Photoreduced ZnO Nanocrystals.

Experiments have suggested that photoreduced ZnO nanocrystals transfer an electron and a proton to organic radicals through a concerted proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) mechanism. The kinetics of this process was studied by monitoring the decay of the absorbance that reflects the concentration of electrons in the conduction bands of the nanocrystals. Interestingly, this absorbance exhibited nonexponential decay kinetics that could not be explained by heterogeneities of the nanoparticles or electron content. To determine if proton diffusion from inside the nanocrystal to reactive sites on the surface could lead to such nonexponential kinetics, herein this process is modeled using kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. These simulations provide the survival probability of a proton hopping among bulk, subsurface, and surface sites within the nanocrystal until it reaches a reactive surface site where it transfers to an organic radical. Using activation barriers predominantly obtained from periodic density functional theory, the simulations reproduce the nonexponential decay kinetics. This nonexponential behavior is found to arise from the broad distribution of lifetimes caused by different types of subsurface and surface sites. The longer lifetimes are associated with the proton becoming temporarily trapped in a subsurface site that does not have direct access to a reactive surface site due to capping ligands. These calculations suggest that movement of the protons rather than the electrons dominate the nonexponential kinetics of the PCET reaction. Thus, the impact of both bulk and surface properties of metal-oxide nanoparticles on proton conductivity should be considered when designing heterogeneous catalysts.

Kinetics of hydrogen atom abstraction from substrate by an active site thiyl radical in ribonucleotide reductase.

Ribonucleotide reductases (RNRs) catalyze the conversion of nucleotides to deoxynucleotides in all organisms. Active E. coli class Ia RNR is an α2β2 complex that undergoes reversible, long-range proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) over a pathway of redox active amino acids (β-Y122 → [β-W48] → β-Y356 → α-Y731 → α-Y730 → α-C439) that spans ∼35 Å. To unmask PCET kinetics from rate-limiting conformational changes, we prepared a photochemical RNR containing a [ReI] photooxidant site-specifically incorporated at position 355 ([Re]-β2), adjacent to PCET pathway residue Y356 in β. [Re]-β2 was further modified by replacing Y356 with 2,3,5-trifluorotyrosine to enable photochemical generation and spectroscopic observation of chemically competent tyrosyl radical(s). Using transient absorption spectroscopy, we compare the kinetics of Y· decay in the presence of substrate and wt-α2, Y731F-α2 ,or C439S-α2, as well as with 3′-[2H]-substrate and wt-α2. We find that only in the presence of wt-α2 and the unlabeled substrate do we observe an enhanced rate of radical decay indicative of forward radical propagation. This observation reveals that cleavage of the 3′-C–H bond of substrate by the transiently formed C439· thiyl radical is rate-limiting in forward PCET through α and has allowed calculation of a lower bound for the rate constant associated with this step of (1.4 ± 0.4) × 104 s–1. Prompting radical propagation with light has enabled observation of PCET events heretofore inaccessible, revealing active site chemistry at the heart of RNR catalysis.

Coupled Electron/Proton Transfer Studies of Benzoquinone-Modified Monolayers

The electrochemical reduction of benzoquinone involves a coupled transfer of protons and electrons. Theoretical treatments of proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) indicate that both thermodynamic (apparent formal potential) and kinetic (apparent standard heterogeneous rate constants) quantities should be highly pH-dependent. Although there are several reports of quinone-derivatized self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) in the literature, no systematic studies on the pH dependence of the PCET kinetics have been reported. In this work, we outline a method to produce SAM-aminobenzoquinone monolayers starting from diluted monolayers of an amine-terminated SAM. The electroactive monolayer behaves as a nearly ideal Nernstian system (no interactions between redox centers). In neutral to weakly acidic electrolytes, the aminobenzoquinone can be reduced in a kinetically slow, two-electron, two-proton (2e2H) process, but in lower pH solutions, the observed reaction is consistent with an overall 2e3H transfer. Kinetic measurements have been made using techniques that do not rely on the assumption of a potential-independent apparent transfer coefficient. The apparent standard rate constants range from 0.1 to 0.01 s−1, which is roughly an order of magnitude faster than previous reports for comparable systems. Plots of log(ks,app) versus pH are distorted variants of the expected W plots predicted from the theory of 2e2H PCET. These deviations may be caused by surface pKa effects and/or additional reaction pathways arising from the third proton transfer.
