Space Behind Abstraction: The Metamorphosis of Shape

Purpose: to demonstrate the relation among various architectural contents, whose synthesis is materialized in thedesign of the architectural space. Method: to develop, in the context of the curricular unity of Drawing, of the Architecture Program, the conception of an architectural space, through an exploratory exercise, using the abstraction of a spot as a starting point, in order to achieve, by its metamorphosis, different kind of spaces, which reflect its main characteristics. The process isexperimental, from the analysis and interpretation of the intrinsic qualities of the spot, to the conception of a threedimensional spatial model. Results and conclusion: the perception that the formulation of space, in architecture, is a synthesis of severalknowledges. This exercise shows, taking as a starting point something so abstract as a spot, one can, through anexperimental process of interpretation, obtain architectural space.

Desirable Futures: Write Me a Letter

<p>In this special issue, we propose the letter as a form with geographic potential. Building on prior work on letters in geography, Black feminism, and Indigenous studies, we draw on a collection of sixteen letters in the section to build a case for letters as time travel, anticolonial epistemology, feminist geographic method, and worldmaking praxis. We bring together letter writers who speak to their ancestors known and unknown, to future generations, to ideas, to activists, to places, and to strangers—and weave them into a messy and generative conversation on the kinds of spaces that letters make between and among us. Our intention is to build on recent work in geography to experiment with what the letter makes possible for us as geographers.</p><p> </p>

The nonlinear contraction in probabilistic cone b-metric spaces with application to integral equation

The probabilistic cone b-metric space is a novel concept that we describe in this study along with some of its fundamental topological properties and instances. We also established the fixed point theorem for the probabilistic nonlinear Banach contraction mapping on this kind of spaces. Many prior findings in the literature are generalized and unified by our findings. In order to illustrate the basic theorem in ordinary cone b-metric spaces, some related findings are also provided with an application to integral equation.

The paradox of in/exclusion: Special education schools as transient spaces of marginality and relationality in contemporary China

AbstractWhile China embraces disability inclusion rhetorically, segregated special schools continue to proliferate in recent decades. What kind of space are special education schools? How do actors in such spaces negotiate stigma and marginality for a better future? This research pairs historical, policy and ethnographic research to examine special education schools as transient spaces of marginality and potentiality in China. It illustrates how inclusion needs to go beyond the entanglement with place towards relationality and being.

The cycleborg: everyday performances of solidarity and hope of the cycling female

ABSTRACT This article weaves together autoethnographic accounts, feminist readings of technology, agency, and performance, and historical points of reference to address the current gender gap in urban cycling in the UK. Through the lens of everyday performance, I examine how females on bicycles are marked as both highly visible spectacles and invisible ‘others’. In developing the feminist promise of the mechanically monstrous cyborg, I offer a new revolutionary figure of hope – the cycleborg – who puts her otherness to use. In doing so, she calls attention to the need re-think hegemonic attitudes towards mobility, agency, and environmentally conscious action. My argument for the performative and revolutionary potential of the cycleborg reconciles everyday gendered performance with environmental consciousness, and is analysed through two contemporary performances: Katie Mitchell’s Atmen (2013) and Hanna Cormick’s The Mermaid (2020). By examining the use of hybrid actors in these performances as tools for promoting social responsibility and radical statements about climate change, I propose, with a romantic, feminist, and fierce hope, that the cycleborg both offers a contemporary vehicle for environmental change and opens possibilities to claim a new kind of space in the world.

“IT’S NOT SWEDEN ANYMORE”: THE FAR RIGHT’S MOBILIZATION OF TERRITORIAL STIGMATIZATION*

The far-right social movement in Sweden is mobilizing against the purported threat to national order posed by the “badlands” of the nation. These are neighborhoods known for their diversity, crime, and poverty. “Badlands” also provide the far right with sites to criticize immigration and multiculturalism. Crucially, they also serve as a new kind of space that the far right uses to organize against what it believes to be a crisis of the state’s loss of the monopoly on violence and fears of the “replacement” of the ethnic majority. Through interviews with movement activists and ethnographic observations of private and public movement events, I show that the nostalgic “homelands and heartlands” frames, coupled with fears of the “badlands,” motivate far-right activists to participate in collective action. I find Sweden’s far-right relies on the interaction between nativism and territorial stigmatization to signify these urban spaces with crime, Islam, and minoritization.

Common rooms in shared dwellings without spousal and parent–child relationships

AbstractWe predict that acceleration of the individualization makes needs to live with some individuals, not with traditional family that includes spousal and parent–child relationship in the future. In this regard, this paper aims to know what kind of space we need. We surveyed 27 cases in Japan that individuals live with someone who is not in spousal or parent–child relationship. As a result, we could observe many variations about way of using common room from the case effectively used to the case hardly used, and we made consideration about factual background that leads these dwellings. The background is consisted of relationship between inhabitants, the way of life and the space they live. Concretely speaking, in the cases that inhabitants in relationship of equals, we could see that they shouldered their housework, deepened exchanges and used their common rooms well. However, in the cases that we could not see inhabitants used their common rooms, they also avoid to use them alone, and instead, they used their private rooms for doing something together.

Liturgies of Livability or Liturgical Violence: What Kind of Space Is Christian Congregational Song Creating for LGBTQIA2S+ and Nonbinary People?

The liturgy is one of the most important places in which people are formed theologically through components such as prayers, music, visual art, and preaching. Yet, depending on the theology that is expressed, the liturgy can be a place that heals or harms. Because LGBTQIA2S+ and nonbinary people are often excluded and made invisible in Christian worship, this article focuses on the importance of Christian congregational song and how—drawing from Nathan Myrick’s work—it can be ethical for LGBTQIA2S+ and nonbinary people when it contributes to their flourishing. First is an articulation of a theology of “both/neither” which (1) acknowledges that LGBTQIA2S+ and nonbinary people exist, (2) is based on a sexually polymorphic reading of Genesis 1:27 and asserts that LGBTQIA2S+ and nonbinary people are made in God’s image, and (3) celebrates difference, diversity, and multiplicity. Next is a discussion of how enacting a theology of “both/neither” in the liturgy creates liturgies of livability for LGBTQIA2S+ and nonbinary people, whereas when it is not, it inflicts liturgical violence. This article concludes by exploring examples from Christian congregational song that support liturgies of livability through their expression of a theology of “both/neither.”

Postcapitalist Planning and Urban Revolution

Through what kind of spaces might postcapitalist planning emerge? How will the process of wresting collective control over the relations of production and reproduction, and over our metabolic exchange with the rest of nature, unfold through struggle? In seeking answers to such questions, this article reviews the literature on democratic economic planning beyond capitalism and makes the case for a renewed engagement with issues of space and the urban through a closer reading of Henri Lefebvre’s work on planetary urbanization and the production of space. We argue that, to date, the economic planning literature has tended to focus on overcoming abstract labour time rather than abstract space – an oversight that prevents us from fully apprehending the urban form through which capitalism produces and reproduces its conditions of possibility and carries the seeds of its own destruction and potential supersession. Engaging with recent critical theorizing on the logistics revolution and the logistical state, we argue that postcapitalist forms of planning will arrive through an urban revolution, through struggles over urban everyday life. We suggest that future investigations into the possibilities for a democratic economic planning beyond capitalism should attend to actually existing empirical struggles over the urban – as the mediator of capitalist relations – and look for inspiration to historical and contemporary examples of municipalist praxis aiming to reinvent the commune.

Third places in precarious workers’ lives: a scoping review of associated social experiences and outcomes

ABSTRACT The contemporary increase in precarious employment has shaped lives marked by employment, economic, and social instability for many workers. While research has demonstrated deleterious physical and mental implications of precarious work, less attention has been paid to social implications, including heightened risk for social isolation. Using a 5-step scoping review process, this paper investigates what is known about the types and characteristics of physical and virtual ‘third places’ outside of home and work that help maintain social connectedness and ameliorate social isolation in the lives of precarious workers. Descriptive and thematic analysis of 24 interdisciplinary articles revealed that precarious workers navigating conditions marked by spatial exclusion enact collective agency to create and sustain alternative ‘third places’ that align with the conditions of precarious lives. Although places created could be associated with social risks, obligations, and exclusions, they were also mobilised to address diverse social needs, including: a sense of belonging to a collective of ‘similar’ others; temporary respite from the conditions of precarity; assertion of presence and visibility; and exchange of diverse resources and forms of care. These results inform critical reflections on the kinds of spaces that can serve as ‘third places’ within societies marked by growing precarity.

Space and Silence as a Possible Form of It: Thoughts of a Literary Translator

Space is often referred to as vacuum and sound cannot travel in it, thus the silence experienced in space. But based on Einstein’s thought scientists now found that space is not silent after all, it is full of vibrations and energy. “The universe is a musical that we've been watching all this time as a silent movie.”[1] If our outer space is not silent what can be said of our other spaces defined as such in our everyday life for example space between letters in this paper? Silence in space is gaps between particles while gaps or blanks in other fields such as literature is part of the explanation reception theorists, Iser (2006) among them, give us to the question why we have different readings of the same text arguing that these gaps, in given parts of the text „trigger synthesizing operations in the reader’s mind “ as they “lead to collisions between the individual ideas formed.” (p.66) If space associated with silence is not silent than what will silence really mean in translation, which is bridging space between different cultures. We will see that silence as a certain form of appearance associated with all kinds of space is universal and at the same time culture-bound and, thus, it also acquires meaning in context while we try to capture and trace the different meanings and notions of it in different fields and consider it from a dialectical aspect as well.

Tracing the affective journey of an interorganizational network: Positive and negative cycles of relational energy in a network space

While there is a lot of research on emotions at the small group level, we lack an understanding of the role of emotions at the large group level, including in interorganizational relationships. This study contributes to filling this important gap in the literature by studying the emotions in an interorganizational network longitudinally over a period of six years. The data reveal how the network offers a particular kind of space in which relational energy emerges, amplifies, can deplete, and can be re-set and turned around. The findings show how network emotions are recursively related to network outcomes, specifically the extent to which the common goal is achieved. This paper contributes to the growing literature on emotions in organization studies by shifting attention toward the important role of context, and it theorizes the interorganizational network as a particular kind of context where individuals interact in a semi-structured manner, with important implications for the interdependent relationship between individual emotions, relational energy, and network properties and outcomes.

Political geographies of discomfort feminism: introduction to the themed intervention

What does discomfort do? What kinds of spaces, boundaries, and power relations are generated by comfort, and for whom? In this introduction to the themed section, we trace comfort/discomfort across borders and through spaces to see when and how these emotions and affective relations generate life and growth, and when they instead circumscribe possibilities. The introduction and the contributions to this issue question ‘comfort feminism’ to consider the role of comfort/discomfort across a range of settings: from protests and activist spaces, to royal weddings, academic institutions, academic disciplines, and the public portrayals of political figures. Across these moments and narratives, flashes of discomfort serve as starting points for analysis. What kind of feminism do we find if we begin from discomfort? What kind of fairytales do we tell ourselves in order to maintain the status quo? How is comfort produced and distributed? Is there be political potential in disrupting public comfort? Through this special issue, we encourage geographers to attend to how comfort makes and unmakes social worlds, senses of belonging, and disciplinary boundaries. We push geographers to trace discomfort as an analytic and as a method for feminist political geography.

The article examines the environmental parameters of human capital development by means of spatial statistical analysis. A number of indicators chosen by the authors reflect “resource availability” and “anthropogenic load” and is included in the set of parameters for the development of human capital. The UN member states world map was taken as the coordinate system for the analysis. In this system, the basic law of geography on the “neighborhood factor” was tested. At the same time, the “neighborhood factor” was tested in two kinds of spaces: physical (geometric neighborhood matrix) and geopolitical (geopolitical neighborhood matrix) ones. Both matrices were developed by the Center for Spatial Analysis of International Relations of the Institute for International Studies team, MGIMO University. The authors used multivariate analysis (in this paper, the analysis of the geographic average and multidimensional scaling) to test the hypothesis that in the modern world, physical space and, accordingly, physical neighborhood are not as important as geopolitical space based on ideological neighborhood. However, the study showed that despite the fact that the role of physical space is weakening, it still prevails over geopolitical, at least in such highly geographically determined indicators as the environmental components of human capital.

PRESERVATION OF STREET ART IN PARIS. AN EXAMPLE FOR RIGA?

In many cities graffiti and street art is considered as vandalism and is often connected with crime. However, in some cities majority of the population does not agree with such a statement. They see street art and graffiti as decoration of the city. They think the artists deserve a safe space for expressing themselves. It is already a little step towards preserving the street art movement, as, of course, not all the citizens will share this opinion, since place of street art is still a very arguable question in many cities around the world. More and more organisations, associations and projects of different types are being created to promote and protect the urban art. Promotion of street art can be expressed in different ways, for example, panel discussions and workshops, exhibitions and festivals. Several street art and graffiti related spaces are being opened in Paris. Museums, warehouses, walls, schools – every kind of space could be used as a platform for the artists. This is also a nice way to show to the city council how important this culture is to the citizens of Paris. At the same time Riga cannot be yet proud of a thriving street art and graffiti culture. But what if Riga actually took Paris as an example? Could similar organisations in Latvia improve the society’s attitude towards urban cultures? Could the safe platform for street art be a solution for its popularization in Riga? The aim of this paper is to introduce organisations which promote and protect street art and graffiti in Paris and to evaluate if street art positions in Paris could actually be an example for Riga. The conclusion is that the bigger amount of such organisations is able to actually change the attitude of society towards the urban art and Riga can surely learn a lot from Paris – creating spaces for graffiti and street artists can not only make their positions better, but also it can have a positive impact for the city’s social life and attract a specific type of tourists to the capital.

Mary Calkins, Victoria Welby, and the spatialization of time

ABSTRACT This paper explores a trans-Atlantic clash about time: in 1899, American philosopher Mary Calkins argued we should not spatialize time; in 1899, British philosopher Victoria Welby argued we should. I take their disagreement as a starting point to contextualize, study, and compare the accounts of time presented in their respective articles. Both Calkins and Welby cared deeply about time, writing on the topic across their careers, but their views have not been studied by historians of philosophy. This is unfortunate, for I argue their novel theories reward attention. Calkins’ 1899 account draws on Kant to arrive at the earliest American-British causal theory of time, pioneers the metaphysical applications of temporal experimental psychology, and replies to F. H. Bradley’s proclamation that it is ‘impossible’ to explain the appearance of time. Meanwhile, I read Welby’s 1907 account as offering a radical metaphysic, on which time is literally a kind of space, resonating with 1880s literature around the ‘fourth dimension’ and H. G. Wells’ 1895 novel The Time Machine. I have uncovered an early draft of Welby’s paper dating to 1902 and, using this alongside other unstudied writings by Welby, trace the development of her views from the 1880s onwards.

On F-Contractions: A Survey

D. Wardowski proved in 2012 a generalization of Banach Contraction Principle by introducing F-contractions in metric spaces. In the next ten years, a great number of researchers used Wardowski's approach, or some of its modifications, to obtain new fixed point results for single- and multivalued mappings in various kinds of spaces. In this review article, we present a survey of these investigations, including some improvements, in particular concerning conditions imposed on function F entering the contractive condition.

Stroke Patients' Free-Time Activities and Spatial Preferences During Inpatient Recovery in Rehabilitation Centers.

Objectives:To investigate which spaces stroke patients visit in their free time while undergoing inpatient recovery in rehabilitation centers, what activities they engage in, and what kind of spaces they want.Background:Research studies consistently show that stroke patients are highly inactive during rehabilitation. Much remains unknown about what patients do in their free time and how the built environment might affect their behavior and activities.Methods:Patients’ free-time activities were recorded via patient shadowing (n = 70, 840 hr), and their spatial preferences were collected using a survey (n = 60) in seven rehabilitation centers. Each participant was observed over one typical day (12 consecutive hours). Their activities, durations, and locations were recorded using floor plans and time log sheets.Results:Six main themes emerged from the analysis of shadowing data and patient surveys: (1) spending most free time in their room, (2) corridor as the overlooked activity hub, (3) food and beverage stations as triggers of activity, (4) wanting to socialize, (5) variety of common spaces for different activities is desired, and (6) common room’s atmosphere, comfort, style, and view are important. Even though socializing with other patients was mentioned as a primary reason for visiting common spaces in the survey, patients spent most of their free time alone.Conclusions:Corridor emerged as a space with great potential to motivate and support various activities of patients. Patients’ free-time activities could contribute to their recovery, and the built environment may play a role in facilitating and supporting these activities.
