International food component data system

The International Network of Food Data Systems planning conference recommends establishing nomenclature and a system of coding for use in INFOODS. The International Food Naming System would facilitate collection, tabulation, storing, and retrieval of information. The system consists of two files for each food: one describing the name in a standardized manner and another reporting chemical and biological data. The two files are linked by International Food Number (IFN). Food names consist of controlled terms called facets: origin, part, process, stage of maturity, and grade. Within each facet, such elements as genus, species, variety (scientific name) and generic name, breed or kind, and strain (English name) are defined. Elements are assigned numerical codes to facilitate sorting and storage. Carefully defined standard descriptions are used in each facet. Each descriptor is assigned an alphabetic code, an unlimited number allowing an open-ended flexible system. IFN may be incorporated into a computerized data management system and stored data searched and sorted for information retrieval on given parameters, e.g., country, state, laboratory, or kind of package. Data can be summarized to obtain averages, ranges, and standard deviations. Summarized data, linked with the International Food Names by the IFN, may be printed out in desired format.

Wide-range D-C center-wind drive

Continuous-process machines are employed in many different industries. Material processed on these machines must be handled, moved, and stored. One of the most commonly used packages is the reel, or roll, because material from this kind of package can be quickly unwrapped, processed, and then rewound. Several kinds of electric drives have been designed to perform the operation of rewinding material. This paper will deal with one particular class of constant-tension rewind drives. Direct-current motor drives are widely used for constant-tension rewind stands in which the roll being wound is driven by a motor attached to its shaft. When the d-c motor is controlled by varying its field, it exhibits an interesting property which allows for very economical drive design as well as economical machine design. One of the limitations of d-c motor rewind stands had been the limited speed range that is possible with field control of d-c motors. This paper will discuss a means for extending the range of a d-c winder drive.

Determining Consumer Preferences for Sweet Potatoes: Methods and Results

E XAMINATION of marketing problems under investigation at land-grant colleges indicates that most research workers have given relatively little attention to studies of consumer preferences for agricultural products. These workers often have overlooked the fact that buyers with market baskets are a source of information that can be useful in improving the marketing system. Buyers also have been ignored by farmers and representatives of marketing agencies who tend to rely on their own personal opinions and hunches in evaluating the wants of consumers. In fact, considerable wishful thinking and rationalization have characterized the views of the produce trade on matters of consumer preferences. It is being recognized, however, that the likes and dislikes of the homemaker, her opinions and prejudices, and the amount of money she has in her pocketbook, all are important items in determining the merchandizing methods used and the products bought. In buying any product the homemaker is confronted with the need for making decisions. These decisions, among other things, are affected by degree and kind of packaging, prevailing prices, and extent to which other products may be substituted. The question arises then as to methods which should be used in obtaining an objective measure of consumers' preferences as a first step in developing a merchandizing system for specific farm products.
