We studied the kidney tonic components of Rhizoma Drynariae. The herbal material was extracted with 50% ethanol. Silica gel and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography were used to isolate the chemical components using the Opossum Kidney cell as the living model. The results show that six monocases were isolated from the EtOH extract of the rhizomes of Drynaria fortunei J. Sm. Four structures were identified as naringin(1), neoeriocitrin(2), kaempferol(3), and naringenin-7-O-β-D-glucoside(4), respectively, on the basis of its spectral and physicochemical evidence. Kaempferol may promote the proliferation of the Opossum Kidney cell tested by Promega's CellTiter96 assay in vitro. Further compounds are currently being identified. Compounds 3 and 4 were isolated from this plant for the first time.
