Conference of Overseas Industrial Medical Officers

THE Annual Conference for Medical Officers in Industry Overseas will be held on July 16 at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, in order that medical officers in industry on leave from the tropics may be able to meet their colleagues and discuss their problems. The main subject for discussion will be the prevention of disease, for example, the control of malaria and epidemic diseases in the tropics; water supplies; sewage and refuse disposal; housing; the keeping of records; and hygiene generally. THE Research Defence Society will hold its annual general meeting at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Keppel Street, London, W.C.I, on June 22 at 3 p.m., when the seventh Stephen Paget memorial lecture will be delivered by Major Gen. Sir Leonard Rogers on “The Saving in Life and Suffering, due to Medical and Veterinary Research, with special Reference to the Tropics”.

Sixth Imperial Social Hygiene Congress

THE sixth Imperial Social Hygiene Congress will be held at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Keppel Street, London, W.C.I on July 3–7 under the presidency of Sir Basil Blackett. On July 3, the presidential address will be delivered, and the rest of the Congress will be divided into a series of discussions including such topics as the effect on established social customs of modern knowledge and economic conditions; changes in the outlook on prostitution; biology and healthâ the teaching of biology in schools and colleges; conference of teachers of biology; methods of dealing with venereal disease in the defence forces of different nations; the training, etc., of health visitors, nurses and mid-wives; venereal disease administration and the supply of educational and cultural films. Progress reports from Great Britain and the Dominions concerning different branches of social hygiene will be presented at the Congress. Arrangements have been made for visits to various institutions of interest to the delegates, a special display of films, and an exhibition of simple equipment used in biological teaching. SIR ARTHUR KEITH will deliver the Stephen Paget memorial lecture at the annual general meeting of the Research Defence Society, which is to be held on Wednesday, June 15, at 3 P.M., in the lecture hall of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Keppel Street, W.C.I.

Andrew Balfour Memorial Fund

AN appeal has been issued for funds to establish a memorial to the late Sir Andrew Balfour. It will be recalled that Sir Andrew died in January last year, shortly after his appointment as the first director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and an appreciation of his life and scientific work appeared in our columns in the issue of Feb. 21 (p. 279). Sir Andrew Balfour will long be remembered for the work he did in the furtherance of research and study in tropical medicine and hygiene. When funds are available, it is proposed to place a simple and inexpensive monument in the School, and with the remainder of the sum received to establish an ‘Andrew Balfour Memorial Fund’ for the purpose of aiding students, preferably those from overseas, to pursue courses of study at the School.
