Adult shoots of Bryophyllum tubiflorum usually show at least six different phyllotactic patterns. During the juvenile stage, the initial decussate phyllotaxis soon gives way to a pseudobijugate type of leaf arrangement Two "imperfect pairs," where the component leaves do not arise exactly at the same level, make the subsequent transition into a helix whose divergence is approximately 135⚬ Several "imperfect trios" follow the helix before the leaves finally arrange themselves into a tricussate pattern. Some additional phyllotactic types and transitions can be observed in certain individuals Pseudobijugation may, for example, proceed directly into a trimerous pattern. In some cases, a true bijugate pattern may exist for many plastochrons In others, the adult tricussate phyllotaxis is replaced by a second helix with an approximate divergence of 97⚬ and an opposite direction to that exhibited by the main helix below. Some instances of tetracussate phyllotaxis can also be found. Slight deviations from the expected values for divergence angles were frequently detected and measured But those present in the second half of the helix and onward should not be taken as mere fluctuations, because they showed a remarkable regularity when referred to individual parastichies. Plants subjected to conditions inductive for flowering exhibited a strikingly higher incidence of reversed 97⚬ helices. Different clones did show significant differences with regard to the extension of their juvenile decussate-pseudobijugate region. The hybrid B. tubiflorum x B. daigremontianum had the longest juvenile stage, but it was identical in most aspects with the parent B. tubiflorum from a phyllotactic point of view. In every case, the direction of the main 135⚬ phyllotactic helix was more frequently clockwise (57 56% ± 1 53%) than counter-clockwise. The possible influences of the apparent movement of the sun or the geomagnetic field on this bias were discarded after a series of experiments. The significance of this type of asymmetrical behavior remains obscure.
