MARKETING PERFORMANCE OF GREEN PRODUCT MANUFACTURING COMPANY – A STUDY

BJCL is a pioneer jute manufacturing company in India. Jute is a natural product and has important economic value as a green manufacturing area. Various types of jute goods like jute yarn, twine, packaging bags, fine quality fabrics, carpet backing clothes are the important green manufacturing products of such a company. Salable production and dispatched data from various months has been studied and found that domestic marketing performance of the industry is rising. The demand for various jute goods has been increasing. Demand for jute bags and clothes in the domestic market as a packaging material has been significantly improved by the industry. It is found that salable production was comparatively less in the years 2020-21 due to the pandemic years. Salable production was comparatively higher in the year 2022-23 compared to 2021-22. From June 23 to September 23, salable production was gradually increasing. It is the continual improvement of the unit. It proved that BJCL months have been improving continually over the months and years too. It is found that the total number of finished bales of 500 bags in each bale has been increased from May 23 to August 23. Increasing trends of finished bales dispatch status of sacking quality were observed. This jute products study period was from October 2020 to March2023. In the study period of May 23 to August 23, the total number of bales dispatch status was increased from 299 to 1244 for Hessian quality of jute products

Present Status and Future Prospects of Jute Diversified Products in Domestic & Export Markets

"Now a day’s products diversification and commercialization are very challenging work in the field of agriculture. Jute is one of the cheapest as well as the strongest amongst the all other natural fibres. India is the largest producer of jute followed by Bangladesh and China and world leader in manufacturing jute goods. Tremendous competition from synthetic materials as well as declining demand for traditional jute goods, demand is expected to rise in respect of its value-added diversified products like fine yarn, blended yarn, specialty fabrics and non-woven based on jute and jute waste. Lots of innovative new products have been developed with high value-addition by the researchers now a days, viz., home textiles, jute composites, jute geo-textiles, paper pulp, technical textiles, chemical products, handicrafts and fashion accessories etc. Globally, demand for diversified jute products is growing particularly in developed country markets such as USA, Canada, Australia and Japan, where peoples are becoming increasingly conscious about carbon footprint of consumer goods."

EXPORT PERFORMANCE OF INDIAN GREEN PRODUCTS

Green Products are coming from Natural origin. The use of such products are now increasing due to eco-friendly nature of such products .Jute is one such green product in India and it has economic value. The Raw Jute and Mesta are the two important crop productions in India. Due to Pandemic situation, the productions of such fibers were in decreasing trend in the year of 2019-20 and 2020-21. In the year of 2020-21, 95.6 lakhs tonnes of Raw Jute were produced in our country. Jute products exports value has been rising trend from 2015-16 to 2021-22. Due to bio degradable nature of the Jute fibre, the demands of Jute products are now in increasing trend. The Jute is used not only as packaging materials of food grain, it is now used in other areas , such as geo textiles, carpet, wall coverings, Garment, shoes and blanket . Some countries import yarn and fabrics from India and manufacture the finished products for further processing of various Jute goods. USA was the leading importer of Indian Jute goods from the year 2019-20 to 2021-22 . Exports value of Jute goods has been increased from 2019-20 to 2021-22 by 66.9 % for USA. France was the 2nd largest importer of Jute goods from India. The export value to France has been increased from 2846.74 Cr.in the year 2019-20 to 3659.90 Cr. of the year 2021-22 .Ghana, UK and Netherlands were the destination of Indian Jute products with rising trend of export value. Ghana was the 3rd largest importing of Jute goods in the year 2020-21 and 2021-22

Factors Influencing the Mindset toward Jute Revival: The Case of an Educated Generation in Bangladesh

We examined the factors affecting the potential of jute products and the supportive mindset toward the revival of jute entrepreneurship in Bangladesh. By using data obtained from an online questionnaire survey, we quantitatively investigated the relationship between the respondents’ mindset and their attributes. First, we found that the employment status as self-employed, the attitudes of Bangladeshi society, and jute product design were the most crucial variables influencing the potential of jute products. Secondly, the employment status as self-employed, the use of jute goods in daily life, and constraints on jute entrepreneurship had the most marked positive effects on supportive mindsets toward the need for jute entrepreneurship. Thirdly, the factors regarding inclination toward agri-entrepreneurs and conditions under which money could be saved had a significant negative effect on supportive mindsets toward jute entrepreneurship. This suggests that there is a trade-off between fostering entrepreneurship in agriculture and reviving a declining industry. Therefore, it is important to enhance further actions that will support the jute industry to revitalize.

Improved microbial retting and quality jute (Corchorus spp.) fibre production in India – A review

Jute (Corchorus spp. L.), the second most important fibre crop next to cotton, is a biodegradable and eco-friendly crop and one of the main cash crops of eastern India. India is the largest producer of raw jute in the world earning about `2200 crores per annum through export of diversified jute goods for which quality jute fibre is needed. The jute fibre quality depends directly on retting process. In India, more than 90% jute farmers do not have the access to free flowing water, so they carry out jute retting in stagnant water. The quality of jute fibre is deteriorated in stagnant water retting because of several factors like less rainfall, repeated retting, absence of efficient retting microbes, direct use of mud, soil etc. In this review paper we have discussed the views of various research workers about the efficient retting microbes, their utilization as microbial consortium for faster retting and quality jute fibre production even in stagnant water retting. Latest molecular approaches for identification of retting microbes including whole genome sequencing of retting microbes and their utilization as talc based formulation, spore based liquid formulation, use of immobilized strain of efficient retting microbes for faster environment friendly jute retting towards quality jute fibre production under farmers’ field conditions have also been discussed in detail.

Commercialization of Bangladeshi Jute and Jute goods: A Special Case Study

Due to new market entrants, marketing of raw jute and jute products is currently under intense competitive pressure. In Bangladesh, the production of diverse jute products has also picked up speed. This study tries to identify new markets for goods made of jute in Bangladesh. Fifteen target markets of five different continents are examined in this regard. To get a full idea about the market different factors, consumer behavior of some markets, supply chain analysis including industry analysis is done. Traders and product demand of those countries have also identified in this paper. After analysis this research gives us the idea that Bangladesh earns more by exporting value added products than raw jute. Also, it suggests some marketing strategies for the exporter and will give a easy way to commercialize their produced products to the International market. Comparative Advantages of Jute Export in Bangladesh, China and India

The aim of this study was to review the trend of production and export of jute as well as comparative advantages of jute export of Bangladesh, China and India. In the case of production, India is the leading country which is followed by Bangladesh, China, Nepal, Zimbabwe, Uzbekistan, Egypt and others. However, Bangladesh plays the supreme role over other countries in the world for exporting jute. Jute export fluctuated erratically over the past four decades in these three most jute exporting countries. The Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) has been enumerated for comparing the jute export advantages in the global market. Bangladesh always enjoys greater comparative advantages than China and India although the revealed comparative advantages are less in recent years than those were one decade ago. But it can’t catch the high-value market because exporters have mainly focused on raw jute while jute goods have high potentiality. The recommended issues urge to enhance the productivity of jute cultivation, inaugurate more diversified products, and explore new markets for exports.

Comparison Between ARIMA and VAR Model Regarding the Forecasting of the Price of Jute Goods in Bangladesh

In this study we used Autoregrressive Intigrated Moving Average (ARIMA) and Vector Autoregrressive (VAR) model to analyze and forecast the price of total Jute Goods with four of its types, where data has been collected from Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) from the year 1980-81 to 2013-2014. In this study, a comparison has been made regarding ARIMA model and VAR model to investigate which model is the best to forecast. The methodology employed in this study is the co-integration and Granger Causality under VECM. The Augmented Dickey Fuller (ADF) Test has been performed to test the stationarity of the data set. The findings of this study suggested that in forecasting the price of jute goods of Bangladesh, the ARIMA model is more efficient than VAR model.

Today Bangladesh stands on the juncture of economic emancipation. The stage is set for rapid growth and development in every sector of the economy. The agriculture sector is also experiencing significant changes. Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI) is determined to play a leading role in the development of the agriculture sector in the twenty-first century. Besides, other organizations such as Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation, Department Agriculture Extension, Non-Government Organizations, Jute Traders, Jute and Jute Goods Exporters, jute based cottage industries are also being received the services of BJRI. In today's rapidly changing business world Human Resources department has to play a very critical role. Various departments are related to the functions like Human Resource, Admin, Sales, Finance and Accounts, and Procurement etc. Though BJRI is a research Institute and research is the priority for the institute, its Human Resource Management plays a vital role to hiring the right person for the right post and also trained the employee and scientist to achieve its objectives. The main objective of this study is to find out the weakness and strength of the institute. To examine the HR practices of the management and expectations of employees and give some recommendation of these study. Framing a Comprehensive Policy to Spur Industrialisation

Bangladesh adopted free market economy in late 80s. Opening up its market to foreign investment the government is trying to assist the private sector in playing a vital role in industrialisation and employment generation with a view to alleviating poverty. The government and the private sector worked hand in hand in promoting export-oriented readymade garment (RMG) units and it became the largest foreign currency earning sector of the country. The government allowed back-to-back letter of credit (LC), bonded warehouse facility and many more to assist the garment factory owners. But after three decades of the RMG sector's inception none of the other sectors is coming forward to back it. Experts forecast few sectors were awaiting takeoff during the last decade. For example, we have export potential of our leather goods sector, ceramics products, pharmaceuticals, shipbuilding, jute goods, home textiles, agro-processed products, information and communication technology (ICT), light engineering products, frozen food, handicrafts etc. Bangladesh has a domestic market of about 160.4 million (16.04 crore) people and the easy access to two largest markets of the world-India with 1.27 billion people and China with 1.36 billion people. Bangladesh has free trade agreements with India through SAFTA, BIMSTEC and negotiating more free trade agreements with India and China under the Asia Pacific Trade Agreement (APTA). India is offering duty-free market access to a long list of Bangladeshi products as a least developed country (LDC). With economic development the local people's purchasing power is also increasing in the domestic market. Therefore, Bangladesh has every potential to be an industrialised country, if a comprehensive legal framework is developed.

THE POLITICAL ECONOMY OF GLOBALIZATION: THE GENESIS OF DUNDEE'S TWO ‘UNITED FRONTS’ IN THE 1930s

ABSTRACTEconomic globalization has been a key force shaping British society since the mid nineteenth-century. This article uses a case-study of Dundee and its jute industry to examine the major issues that have arisen as the effects of those global forces have been responded to. Dundee was especially prone to detrimental effects from globalization because of its character as ‘juteopolis’, a one industry town with that industry subject to powerful competitive pressures from Calcutta producers from the 1880s onwards. In the 1930s these pressures became overwhelming, as cheap jute goods from India undercut the Dundee industry's home as well as export markets, and mass unemployment ensued. The local responses to this pressure were sharply divergent. There was both a ‘United Front’ between many elements in the local labour movement, mirroring the much-contested national calls for joint Labour and Communist party efforts, and a quite different ‘front’ bringing together jute employers, jute unions, local MPs, and the city council to call for protection for the industry. It is argued that this divergence can be used to explore key issues in the nature of the forces, national as well as local, operating on industrial cities and their populations.

The Development Imperatives of SMEs in Bangladesh

SMEs are the engine of growth in Bangladesh. There are about 6.0 million SMEs in the country. About 90 per cent of all industrial units in Bangladesh are SMEs generating about 25 per cent of the GDP, employing about 31 million people and providing 75 per cent of household income. Various categories of SMEs together contribute between 80 per cent to 85 per cent of industrial employment and 23 per cent of total civilian employment in Bangladesh. About 60 per cent 65 per cent of SMEs are located outside the metropolitan areas of Dhaka and Chittagong. SMEs are providing job opportunities to about 70-80% of the non-agricultural labour force. The SME share in manufacturing value added to GDP varies at 28-30%. The services sector is primarily composed of SMEs, which is responsible for the bulk of employment growth. SME contribution to national export is significant through different industries such as ready-made garments, jute, and leather etc. Electrical and electronics, light engineering, and plastic goods, leather goods and footwear, agro-processing, fashion designing, knitwear and readymade garments, pharmaceuticals, jute and jute goods, handicraft, frozen fish, ceramics and furniture are the most promising SME industries in Bangladesh.

For a More Investment-Friendly Policy Framework in Bangladesh

Economic reforms can bring sustainable growth for Bangladesh. It has to diversify its exports and reduce dependence on readymade garment for forex earning. Bangladesh can revive its jute goods' export market. At the same time, it should make its RMG more competitive in the global market. The country got ample opportunities over the last three decades to diversify its export basket to create options for survival in a competitive global market.

A dynamic simulation model of the world jute economy

This paper investigates both the sources of jute supply instability and the potential impact of an internationally managed buffer stock to stabilize market prices. The analysis is carried out utilizing a rather simple dynamic model of the markets for raw jute and jute goods. The model combines econometric estimates of the relevant parameters with a priori information derived from industry studies. It integrates the behavior of jute farmers in the principal jute growing countries with that of jute goods manufacturers and consumers using a series of region-specific demand and supply functions. Expected price variance is an explicit factor in determining jute acreage.

Evaluation of the Efficacy of Cationic Surfactants in Improving Spinning Qualities of Jute

Jute fiber is rather hard and brittle in the normal conditions and is therefore softened usually by treatment with mineral oil-in-water emulsion before being processed for conversion into yarn. To improve the softening effect still further and reduce the application of mineral oil (as required for certain end-uses of jute goods), a search for suitable alternative softening/lubricating materials has been made. The effect of a number of softening agents, including certain cationic surfactants, on the surface properties of fibers has been studied in the laboratory on different grades of raw jute and at different regions along the length of the raw jute reeds. Of the different surface active agents studied the cationic type has been found to be the most effective one in reducing the surface friction and resistance to carding of the fibers. But the efficacy of cationic surfactants available from different sources at different times seems to vary appreciably. A number of methods of testing, both physical and chemical, have therefore been studied to find a suitable one for determining quickly the efficacy of the samples of cationic surfactants received from different sources prior to their applications in the manufacturing process. The results obtained in different tests are found to be related fairly closely to the resistance offered by the fibers to carding. The test for carding resistance has therefore been considered to be a convenient one for the purpose. The method may be used also for determining the amount of application of cationic surfactants for processing different grades of raw jute.

Application of Electronics in Jute Conversion Processes and Quality Control

After the partition in 1947, the Indian jute industry faced increasing competition from petro-chemical substitute products and also from jute goods manufactured in other countries. To meet the situation the industry started manufacturing quality products for special end-nses and laid emphasis on standardisation and quality control of the traditional ones. To assist the industry in this direction a number of electronic instruments have been designed and constructed at the Indian Jute Industries' Research Association, which have been in wide use in the industry. The purpose, working principle and construction of a few of these instruments have been described and the use of a number of others mentioned. Assistance of the electronic industry to meet the growing requirements of additional devices in the jute manufacturing processes has been suggested.

A Proposal for Fiscal Incentives for the Raw-Jute Exports (Notes & Comments)

While jute is an important crop, jute policy of Pakistan has often been inadequate. Efforts to improve the productivity of jute and to pursue a price policy consistent with the long-term interest of jute in the external market have been peripheral and uncoordinated and all along not been commensurate with the gravity of the issues involved. In the twenty years since Pakistan came into existence, the world production of jute and allied fibres increased by nearly 300 per cent from a level of about 1.5 million metric tons during the period 1947-52 to 4.3 million tons during 1967/68, whereas Pakistan's production of jute has stagnated at a level around 1.0 to 1.3 million tons per annum. As a result, Pakistan's share in the world production has continuously declined from about 80 per cent in 1947/48 to only 30 per cent in 1967/68. In the same period the volume of world export trade in raw jute and jute goods increased by nearly 40 per cent whereas Pakistan's exports increased only marginally by 8 per cent — its share in raw jute had declined in absolute terms which could hardly be compensated by the increase in exports of jute goods [6].

Statistical Estimation of the Demand for Jute Goods in Pakistan

The purpose of this study is to derive a demand function for jute goods in Pakistan. Such an exercise is necessary for several reasons; to provide a systematic analysis of the forces that govern the demand for jute goods in Pakistan and to make it possible to provide (assuming no serious structural changes within the economy) a reasonably probable basis for planning future production targets in jute goods, since internal demand together with export demand would determine such a target. At this date it is difficult to discern any significant time-trend for jute demand; there have been large year-to-year fluctuations. To indicate the nature of such fluctuations: the figure for internal demand in 1960-61 was 16.87 per cent lower than that of 1956-57 while the figure for 1961-62 was 0.11 per cent lower than the level of 1956-57 and 20.16 per cent above the level of 1960-61 (see, Appendix Table A-l). However, since demand for jute goods is a derived demand, such fluctuations could not have been primarily random, nor could they have been due to any odd factor such as the enigma of taste changes. Such fluctuations can then be sought to be traced to the fluctuations in the levels of its determinants and the purpose here, essentially, is to find whether these demand fluctuations can be systematically explained as being caused by changes in some of these determining variables.
