Algorithmic selection and supply of political news on Facebook

Facebook has been criticized for exposing its users to low-quality and harmful information, including fake news, hate speech, and politically one-sided content. In December 2013 and again in August 2014, the platform updated its news feed algorithm to increase user exposure to quality content of news publishers, while curbing the proliferation of non-informative posts. This paper uses a sample of German newspapers to investigate the conjecture that these modifications raised the incentives to publish quality news stories on the platform, focusing on the number and diversity of news story posts about substantive political issues. Using the newspapers’ print editions as a counterfactual, our results indicate an increase in the amount of substantive political news on Facebook by approximately 30%. This expansion occurred in a politically balanced way, except that the outlets disproportionately increased their Facebook coverage of the formerly underrepresented Linke (Left Party). Consequently, the within-outlet concentration of political viewpoints decreased by about one half of the standard deviation of our concentration indices.

Influence of Library Resources and Services on Research Activities Among Postgraduate Students of Southwest Federal Universities, Nigeria

Library resources and services are essential in postgraduate studies to conduct successful research, demonstrate academic scholarship and gain recognition for creative thinking. Hence, this study evaluated the influence of library resources and services on research activities among postgraduate students’ in southwest Federal Universities, Nigeria. A study research design was adopted for the survey. However, a multi-stage sampling procedure was applied to select 378 respondents for the study. Data were assembled with the use of a designed questionnaire on library resources and services influencing postgraduate research activities. Standard deviation, mean, frequency counts and percentages were used to analyse the data. The study concluded that the library provides resources and services that influence the research activities of postgraduate students. However, the use of library resources and services is crucial in postgraduate studies to achieve their academic objectives. The study, therefore recommended that provision and preservation of library resources should be given more attention in the universities, while library services should be improved upon for better service delivery. In addition, the library should make enough internet access points available for students.

All the President’s Media: How the Traditional Press Responded to New Communications Technology Adopted by US Presidents

Both Franklin D. Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy mastered new forms of mass media communications, ridding themselves of formal gatekeepers to communicate directly to US citizens. For Roosevelt, mastering radio airwaves would allow him to navigate past traditional presidential rhetorical tropes and print journalists’ interpretations of his presidential messages to speak directly to the American public. For Kennedy, television meant advertising spots, late-night talk show appearances, and hour-long specials with his family as a way of pushing the medium beyond televised speeches in his campaigns. This study attempts to understand how the traditional press reacted to these unfiltered messages. Findings suggest that newspaper editorials and magazine stories initially praised these men’s innovative approaches to new technology, but over time, legacy media became disillusioned as it began to view presidential uses of new media as a nuisance that hampered legitimate reporting.

A cardinal approach towards sports news in national newspaper through journalism and mass media

A paradox exists at the heart of sports journalism. On one hand, it has over the years often been viewed as the poor relation within journalism, lacking the integrity that journalists often like to associate with their self-image. Sports journalism has been characterised as a form of “soft” journalistic practice, without the rigour and credibility of other forms of “hard” journalism. It was an area of journalism that was viewed as an uncritical booster and promoter of sport and its culture rather than a sector that called the powerful in sport to account. It was a journalism that was more often going to ask the easy and banal question, rather than the penetrating and pertinent one. The digital turn of the has also dramatically reshaped the journalistic landscape, with sports journalism often being at the leading edge of this transition as journalism moved online and many new (often fan-based) sources of information become available around sports culture. The business crisis in print journalism has arrived at the sports journalists door somewhat later than for other sectors, but arrive it has. As the funding of journalism moves centre stage as a driver in shaping the new trajectories of journalism, those working in sports also have had to adapt and re-invent themselves and it is this process that is the focus of this special issue of Digital Journalism.

VR, NFT, Metaverse... How digital innovations affect the development of marketing and PR communications

This study aims to determine innovative global trends in communications and their impact on the development of the marketing and PR industry. For this, we applied trend analysis, one of the modern forecasting methods, which is based on the examination of secondary sources and news publications and allows the identification of weak information signals from various markets based on the mention of digital innovations. Innovative tools guide companies to construct a new reality for stakeholders, improve interaction methods with stakeholders, and form their favorable corporate image and brand positioning. We identified six trends that will impact the development of communications in the coming decades: machine learning; big data; virtual reality technologies; digital gamification; blockchain and NFT; migration to the metaverse. We concluded that these digital innovations would enrich the promotion toolkit, form a new socio-communication dimension, and produce a creative and meaningful context. In particular, we conclude that VR technologies will encourage further penetration of advertising and PR into the field of integrated virtual communications. Gamification will become more and more deeply rooted in all areas of marketing and PR activities, diversify interaction with stakeholders, and increase its effectiveness thanks to novelty, emotionality, and user involvement. Finally, NFT will become a symbol of innovation from the image perspective and a thematic platform for stakeholder communications. Journalism is in Extreme Terms. Transformation of Genres

Introduction. Military topics, problems of survival and prospects of victory have become leading in the materials of modern ZMK. A huge array of information needs scientific analysis. The topicality of the topic is due to drastic, sometimes unpredictable changes in public consciousness, which caused an adequate reaction in publications in domestic ZMK. The depiction and analysis of extreme events in which the heroes of reports, articles, and essays act require a new method of collecting and analyzing facts. The novelty consists first of all in the formulation and actualization of the problem itself, since up to now mostly cursory questions and individual nuances of the global problem have been clarified. The task of scientific understanding and extrapolation to the practice of transforming genres in the extreme conditions of wartime could not arise earlier due to objective reasons. The goal is to try to grasp the essence and significance for the next critical understanding, ethical and aesthetic perception of new genre varieties that have arisen as a result of extreme events. Task. To single out certain genres of print and Internet journalism that have changed the most recently, to characterize the characteristic features of this transformation. Research methods. The introductory part of the work is based on the historical and comparative method. The second part of scientific intelligence includes the monitoring method. The hermeneutic method came in handy when it was necessary to analyze complicated stylistic constructions in the latest genre forms. Research results and prospects. The main conclusion of the study is the ascertainment of the fact of the transformation of the genre system in the extreme conditions of the Russian-Ukrainian war. The analysis of the empirical material proved that informative and journalistic and analytical journalistic materials have changed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The author sees further prospects for the study of the problem in the deepening and expanded interpretation of the already outlined topics. The problem of analyzing new editions also seems promising.

Descriptive analysis of TikTok videos posted under the hashtag #Ozempic

Current discourse regarding weight loss on social media includes the discussion of Ozempic, a drug which facilitates weight loss, although approved for enhancing metabolic control among people with diabetes. The surge in public interest and the subsequent increase in demand for Ozempic has led to medication shortages for people with diabetes, as highlighted in news reports and publications. This cross-sectional study aimed to describe the content of the first 100 video results under the hashtag #Ozempic on TikTok. Videos extracted from TikTok were primarily uploaded by consumers and viewed ∼ 70 million times. The coding sheet encompassed basic information (including the URL identifier, date of upload, view count, number of likes, number of shares, and indication of whether the video was uploaded by consumers or professionals), and 19 content categories. Only two of the 19 content characteristics were covered in the majority (>50%) of the videos, “mentions being on/taking Ozempic or others taking/using/planning to use Ozempic” (n = 69), garnering over 43 million views) and “mentions being used for weight loss” (n = 57), garnering over 44 million views). Over one-third (n = 35), garnering over 31 million views, included content that “encourages/entices other people to try Ozempic/presents Ozempic as a coveted drug/portrays Ozempic positively.” Less than 5% of the sample mentioned “off label prescription use” (n = 3), “bariatric surgery for weight loss” (n = 3), or “medication shortage” that may result from off label use (n = 1). Healthcare professionals, regulatory bodies, and social media platforms should collaborate to address the challenges posed by viral trends resulting in medication shortages with potentially consequential outcomes for people with diabetes.

DISCOURSE STRUCTURE OF THE SPORTS REPORT OF THE 2022 FIFA WORLD CUP IN KENYAN NEWSPAPERS

Sports discourse is one of the most common types of discourses today. The 2022 FIFA world Cup games in Qatar was a matter of contention. One area that reflected the power of discourse was that it created the space for journalists and NGOs to highlight issues that might otherwise have remained out of sight. This study focused on discourse structure of the sports report of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Kenyan Newspapers. The study applied Fairclough’s (1992, 2001) and Van Djik (2001) Critical Discourse Analysis Theory. The study employed descriptive research design. The target population for this study was 2022 FIFA World Cup football reports in Kenyan newspapers. The study employed purposive sampling procedures. Data was collected from primary and secondary sources through an observation sheet. Data analysis was analyzed qualitatively by means of textual analysis. The findings of the study revealed that the discourse structure of sports news has three main structures the topic/headline, lead and the main event. The study recommends that since the sports news is highly ideological specific institutions of newspapers should provide a strong check and balance on the publication of news to ensure objective representation of news. It is hoped that the study adds knowledge to linguistics and media and communication.

Alongside paper print journals, some of which have been around for a long time, the last dozen years have seen the emergence of online journals geared towards open access, a model that is becoming increasingly appreciated and aims to give French works greater visibility, both in France and abroad.

Evaluation on Chinese Mainstream Media Gender Equity Level Take People’s Daily, China Women’s Daily, and the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League WeChat public platform as examples

Many studies have shown that gender bias exists in the news. It is unclear whether and what sexism issues exist in mainstream media. The purpose of this study is to identify the types of sexist issues in the news and how they change in Chinese mainstream media. This study used content analysis to analyze all public news for three years from the People’s Daily, China Women’s Daily, and the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League WeChat public platform. The study found that all three mainstream media have gender discrimination problems, and their number and diversity are increasing every year.

Research of Public News Headlines’ Bias in the Context of New Media: Using “Weibo” Hot Search Headlines as a Case Study

In recent years, the criteria for creating popular search headlines on Weibo have made it a socially controversial source of information. Using content analysis as the primary research method, this study seeks to systematically dissect the presentation of news topics within Weibo’s popular search headlines. Through a careful examination of news content, trends, and patterns, it aims to reveal the existence and dynamics of biases in news selection and presentation. Furthermore, this paper investigates the dissemination of public news and its complexity while exploring both internal and external factors contributing to deviations in the publication of public news headlines. It also strives to enrich our understanding of the significance of this platform and its potential impact on Chinese society. Insights gained from this research contribute to our understanding of the evolving patterns of news dissemination within the Chinese internet ecosystem. It underscores the importance of critically evaluating the role of digital platforms in shaping public discourse and information consumption, with a focus on bias issues and their broader societal implications.

Analysis Of Problems In The Marketing Mix Against Customer Loyalty in Cerita Kita Cafee

Coffee lovers in Indonesia in every year continues to rise according to 2016 until 2023. Consumption of coffee as a beverage or Ready to Drink (RTD) is becoming more significant in Indonesia especially in Cerita Kita Cafee &amp; as an animo of this time. Compulsory marketing mix is carried out using caution because it is a misleading one aspect of the akbar on the venture. This research aims to determine the effect of marketing mix variables on consumer loyalty variables. Methodologically, the paper is an explanatory research that reveals variable interactions using other variables using hypothesis submissions. There are 100 respondents who are expected in this study to use public news online. The sample is based on respondents who have visited Cerita Kita Cafee at the Store in Magelang. The data in this study was then analyzed using double linear regression using IBM SPSS 22. The test results against the 7th hypothesis is that the marketing mix has a significant influence on consumer loyalty. Hopefully this research can be used as a benchmark for our Cafee's story party to improve and expand efforts in the coming days.

FreCDo: A Large Corpus for French Cross-Domain Dialect Identification

We present a novel corpus for French dialect identification comprising 413,522 French text samples collected from public news websites in Belgium, Canada, France and Switzerland. To ensure an accurate estimation of the dialect identification performance of models, we designed the corpus to eliminate potential biases related to topic, writing style, and publication source. More precisely, the training, validation and test splits are collected from different news websites, while searching for different keywords (topics). This leads to a French cross-domain (FreCDo) dialect identification task. We conduct experiments with four competitive baselines, a fine-tuned CamemBERT model, an XGBoost based on fine-tuned CamemBERT features, a Support Vector Machines (SVM) classifier based on fine-tuned CamemBERT features, and an SVM based on word n-grams. Aside from presenting quantitative results, we also make an analysis of the most discriminative features learned by CamemBERT. Dictum-modus pluralism in virtual dialogic discourse (based on Internet comments)

The article explores the dictum and modus content of the virtual dialogue, formed by news published on the Internet and comments by the discussion participants. The problematics of the study is determined by the contradiction between the uniqueness of the content plane for the news publication as the embodiment of the author’s intention and the dictum-modus pluralism expressed in the comments of the participants in the Internet discussion. The study involves 155 comments of internet discussion to the news “What will the Russian soldiers die in Kazakhstan for?” posted on the maxpark portal. The Internet discussion of political news establishes the role of the categories of the expected and the conflict of interpretations that influence the dictum-modus content of the dialogue. While researching a virtual dialogue, we revealed two types of text space organization: syntagmatic and paradigmatic, which set up the undulating and radial principles of virtual dialogue development. The syntagmatic structure of the dialogue is manifested when the latter develops from a specific topic stated in the publication to related ones, then to global ones, which determines its multidimensional and polymodal development. The paradigmatic dynamics of the virtual dialogue is determined by the multi-vector nature of the topics discussed. The analysis of comments discovered two models of their interaction: linear-chain and parallel. The linear-chain model determines the development of a dialogue in accordance with centrifugal tendencies, expanding its dictummodus space. The parallel model ensures the development of a dialogue in accordance with centripetal tendencies; it is implemented according to the principle of a common structural model and the same mode, providing the stabilization and dictum-modus integrity of the virtual dialogue. The theory of Internet dialogue developed in the article, the explanatory potential of the categories of the expected and the conflict of interpretations can be used in the analysis and forecasts of the mental state of the society.

The representation of the science media image (exemplified by mediatexts of the regional online news publication 1obl.ru)

The article is devoted to identifying a science media image speech representation’ features in the official online news publication of the Chelyabinsk region, covering the events of the industrial Russian region. The news media texts of the regional news portal 1obl.ru served as the object of the study, selected by systematic sampling, relevant to the keyword “science”. The specific formation of science media image is analyzed by frequency and infrequent content analysis. The analysis’ unit is the frequent lexemes of the text corpus relevant to the topic of science. To implement frequency content analysis, automatic semantic processing is used, which allows to identify discursive features, nuclear and peripheral semantic constructions of the concept, transmitting frequent patterns of behavior and cultural and value orientations. The Miratext automatic semantic analysis program is used as a toolkit. Infrequent content analysis provides for the definition of linguistic and cognitive mechanisms by which the media image of science is presented, emotional and value characteristics, as a result of which significant semantic components included in the structure of the concept “science” are determined and, moreover, checks the accuracy of entering into the semantic structures of the concept, eliminates statistical errors of automatic semantic analysis. The analysis of the material suggests that the media coverage of the region’s scientific potential, the emotional background and the connotations should be taken into account. This stimulates the involvement, interest and increases the literacy of the regional reader in the development of regional science, as well as raises the prestige of the region. The explanatory function of media publications contributes to the adoption of state priorities in the field of science and the consolidation of value orientations in the linguistic consciousness of the reader. The conclusions present the identified features of the South Ural’ science media image.

Oxoplastics, Bioplastics, and their Potential of Microplastics Generation (Case Study: Indonesia)

Plastics are still becoming popular topic in public news. This was initiated by some sea-animals that was trapped by plastic straws, plastic fishing net, and the other plastic packaging. This plastics problem are starting to become global issue and escalate the awareness of people to reduce the plastics use. Some campaign of reducing plastic use are varied, such as starting a zero-waste lifestyle, banning plastics bags, and the other solution is using degradable plastics. Unfortunately, some of the degradable plastics just become a label and only part of greenwashing product. With the increasing issue of microplastics, this degradable plastics is still seen to be skeptical from some academic perspective. The other solution that becoming popular is using biodegradable plastics or bioplastics. This bioplastic is said to be a better option because it is made from natural substrate that easily degrade, edible, and claimed to be safer for the environment. But this claim is still need further research and also standardization of biodegradability definition. This review will provide about the definition of biodegradable plastics, the differences between oxoplastic and bioplastics; the implementation of bioplastic or oxoplastic product in Indonesia, and issue related to microplastic generation

“Jurnalistik Itu Asik” pada Pelajar Ipnu-Ippnu Ranting Desa Trikarso dan Karangtaruna Desa Trikarso

The lack of knowledge about journalistic writing, the lack of publication of news in the village, the lack of awareness from the community about writing a news story are the reasons for implementing the thematic service for the Kebumen UMNU KKN with the theme "Journalism is Fun". This training is a form of implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, namely Community Service and also provides learning experiences about journalistic writing to the community, especially IPNU-IPPNU students of Trikarso Branch and Trikarso Village Karangtaruna. Community service activities in the form of journalistic training include the delivery of material on Introductory Journalism Materials, News Writing Techniques, and Article Writing Techniques. The presentation of the training was carried out using lecture, question and answer methods, demonstrations. The participants also carried out practice in the form of news hunting and continued with compiling and writing news. The parties involved as speakers in this activity were Fathurohman Wahid as the editor of Kebumen Talk, Mugiono as the Head of Head of Kebumen Talk and Aby, a Tidar University student. COMPARATIVE STUDY OF QUALITY AND POPULAR PRESS ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

The media conveys crucial information, speaks out, and spreads awareness of violations of human rights. Pakistan media plays a vital role in human rights especially in violence against women. The present research is based on print media and its role in violence against women. This is a comparative study of popular and Quality press on violence against women in Pakistan. Data is collected from two national newspaper of Pakistan, Daily Dawn (Quality press) and Daily Khabrain (Popular Press) with help of content analysis. Researcher collected data on coding sheet with defined categories. Framing theory used to support the study. The findings of the study revealed that the popular press (Daily khabrian) is given more negative news about violence against women and portrayed negative image of women and also have negative tone as compared to Quality press. Additionally, it has been discovered that the quality press typically devotes very little space in their daily news publications to the problems that women face, which serve as the primary catalyst for violence against women in Pakistan.

Necessary to Increase Teacher Competency in Facing the Artificial Intelligence Era

This study aimed to describe the requisite competence levels of educators in adapting to the era of Artificial Intelligence and identify the challenges that educators encounter in effectively responding to this technological epoch. The present research uses literature review techniques to gain insights. The data for this study is sourced from various documents, including scholarly articles, conference proceedings, books, research reports, and online news publications. Content analysis is employed as the principal method of data analysis to derive meaningful conclusions. The findings of this investigation underscore the pivotal role of teacher competence in navigating the landscape of Artificial Intelligence. Educators must possess professional, pedagogical, personal, and social competencies to effectively engage with the Artificial Intelligence era. Furthermore, educators must demonstrate proficiency in harnessing digital technology for instructional purposes, creating digital-based educational resources, and adeptly utilizing search engines to curate relevant materials. This imperative stems from the contemporary student demographic, often called digital natives, who are inextricably linked to digital technology, particularly within social media. Significantly, the Artificial Intelligence era has brought to light a predicament for educators, potentially impeding the efficacy of classroom-based instruction. Instruction of inadequate teacher competence, particularly in pedagogical skills and the utilization of digital technology, can engender a monotonous learning experience, consequently diminishing students' enthusiasm for the educational process.
