Public support and firm performance: a systematic review and research agenda

ABSTRACT Public support for enterprises contributes to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship. The impact evaluation is a relevant and complex topic that still receives relatively limited scholarly attention. The study consists of an integrative review of a systematic selection of 60 articles published between 1998 and 2023 on public financial and non-financial support and firm performance outcomes. The study first describes the state-of-the-art publications on public support and firm performance in terms of journal outlets, publishing year, methodologies, country of origin, sample characteristics, and unit of analysis. Through an in-depth content analysis of articles, the review proposes an integrative framework describing the relationships between public support and firm performance outcomes, also underlining interacting variables. Our critical analysis and synthesis illustrate what is confirmed in the literature and what is not. We propose an agenda for future research, contributing to the debate on enterprise policy evaluation. This review has practical implications as it contrasts public policies’ impacts on different geographical contexts, providing food for thought for practitioners and policymakers.

Insta-News: How the New York Times and Washington Post Use Instagram

ABSTRACT As social media platforms increasingly gain institutional power within the media landscape, it is important to understand how news organizations are working within the platforms’ restrictions. The New York Times and Washington Post are two legacy publishers known worldwide for their high-quality print and digital content. As two highly followed accounts on Instagram, they make strong rationale for leading the way in how to use Instagram for other journalism outlets. As such, the following study quantitatively analyzes the content that each organization shared on their official Instagram accounts so that researchers and practitioners can better understand two examples of how to utilize the platform. Additionally, user responses to the content are discussed as they are essential in knowing what types of content should be highlighted. Findings demonstrate similarities and differences in approach in terms of topic, content type, visual approach, and more. In particular, each organization highlighted topics that were in line with their overall brands, with the Times focusing more soft news content and the Post highlighting politics and breaking news. Practical and theoretical implications are discussed in terms of algorithmic gatekeeping that integrates platform restrictions, user responses, and content types. Future avenues of research are outlined.

Influential literature in tennis medicine and science

This study examined the most influential peer-reviewed journal articles and books in tennis medicine and science based on citations (C). Systematic searches were performed to extract authors, titles, year, journal, C, and research focus for the top cited publications indexed in Google Scholar (GS). The top 100 articles had high numbers of citations (85 to 1,164) and citation rates (3 to 41 C/year) that were similar between tennis medicine and science, with fewer citations to tennis books. The influence of tennis research has increased over the last decade, with citations and citation rates were higher than was previously reported (Knudson, 2012). The study confirmed important research topics and journal outlets and identified influential authors. Influential tennis research continues to focus on injuries, physiological and psychological factors, with recent increases in analytics and business aspects of the sport.

A Systematic Review of the Digital Banking Challenges in the Indian Banking Sector

With the old banking system enduring a tremendous transition over the past ten years that is still going on today, the digital transformation of the banking sector has been a game-changing upheaval for the business. The purpose of this paper is to present a thorough study of the obstacles that traditional brick-and-mortar banking institutions must overcome in order to implement this change. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) served as the foundation for the approach employed in this Systematic Literature Review. The review centres on the issues associated with digital banking, scrutinizing many elements including journal outlets, article publication year, citation index journal articles, number of independent variables, and more. Although the majority of the current research is descriptive in character and is dependent on secondary data, this necessitates the contribution of empirical studies to the existing body of knowledge.

An examination of existing research on academic libraries and the social web

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to examine research on academic libraries and the social web published from July 1, 2019, to June 30, 2023.Design/methodology/approachThe article search and filtering procedures mirrored those of Choi and Harper (2020) and Carlsson (2015), resulting in a total sample size of 93 articles. These articles underwent examination based on the same eight variables (i.e. journal outlet, research theme, publication year, social web type, method, keyword, study participant type and study country) as employed by Choi and Harper (2020) and Carlsson (2015), with the addition of two new variables (i.e. research purpose and the impact of COVID-19).FindingsThe research article volume has consistently maintained a stable trend. A notable difference from Choi and Harper (2020) and Carlsson (2015) is the rise of “user perspectives” as the second most prevalent theme. Unlike Choi and Harper (2020), the “survey” method is predominant. Many research purposes, excluding “marketing and promotion,” lack attention. Additionally, there’s a dearth of studies on the impact of COVID-19.Research limitations/implicationsThe findings from the study not only offer a snapshot of the current research landscape on academic libraries and their engagement with the social web but also offer insights for future scholarly endeavors.Originality/valueThere is a limited effort in exploring the recent literature regarding the role of the social web in academic libraries. This study serves as a valuable guide for contributing to this dynamic research stream and provides various up-to-date implications.

“A Hard Road With Personal Costs”: How Digital-First Nonprofit News Founders Navigate Precarity

As the journalism industry descends further into economic collapse, precarity has become an increasingly useful concept in studies of newswork. While a growing body of literature has begun to consider how founders of startup journalism outlets navigate their own precarious self-employment, the existing scholarship pays little attention to journalists working at digital-first nonprofit newsrooms. This study draws on a political economic framework and in-depth interviews with founders of nonprofit news organizations in the United States to understand how these newsworkers experience and navigate various forms of precarity. Findings from this research confirm that precarity is ubiquitous among nonprofit news founders, and that financial precarity is particularly acute. Founders rely heavily on their personal and professional communities for support in navigating their precarious working conditions, and find great satisfaction in providing high-quality news and information to their communities. This study adds to growing calls for a labor turn in journalism studies and contributes to the literature on journalistic precarity by extending the concept to examine nonprofit newsrooms and their founders. Additionally, these findings provide insight into specific ways in which the burden of precarity on founders can be reduced.

Intermediary Perception of Narcissistic and Humble CEO Traits

AbstractThe media plays a key role in bridging information asymmetries between parties such as CEOs and third-party observers. However, current research suggest that the media is not just a carrier of information but can actively shape the impression of the audience. An open question remains, hence, whether media reporting is affected by certain CEO traits such as narcissism or humility, two key constructs in the literature. For instance, narcissistic CEOs’ belief in their own superiority may spillover to the media, thereby distorting the function as information carrier and favoring directly or indirectly certain CEO traits. Therefore, by drawing on the differential effects that narcissism and humility can have on the impression of an audience, the study employs a computer-aided content analysis of factual narcissistic and humble CEOs, identified via a video metric approach, and their evaluation through three key journalistic intermediaries (New York Times, Washington Post, and Financial Times). The quantitative data suggest that actual CEO narcissism is related negatively to external performance evaluations of CEOs in subsequent years. In addition, the data suggest that narcissism as well as humility scores increase the emotional tone employed depending on the journalistic orientation of the media outlet. Humble CEOs receive on average more media attention than narcissistic CEOs yet this result is insignificant, providing limited evidence for a systematic (i.e., number of articles) bias across and within journalistic outlets towards either narcissistic or humble CEOs. This suggests that widely considered “quality” media outlets resist to portray CEO traits in an overly positive/negative light.

Illuminating the shadows: a systematic review of earnings management practices in family-owned enterprises and future research directions

PurposeThe present research conducts a thorough review of published literature relevant to earnings management (EM) practices in family firms (FFs), utilizing the Scopus database, intending to identify potential directions for future research.Design/methodology/approachThrough a systematic review, this study focuses on identifying and summarizing trends in publications over the years, the journal outlets, geographical contexts, research methodologies, the temporal evolution of theories and the specific constructs under investigation.FindingsEarlier empirical studies suggest that corporate governance enhances integrity and transparency in FFs, thereby reducing EM practices. Contrarily, compliance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) seems to offer managers more opportunities for convenient EM rather than restricting such practices. Notably, corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices do not appear to mitigate EM practices consistently. The literature, however, reveals inclusive results and areas requiring deeper exploration for more definitive results. For instance, certain corporate governance mechanisms, such as family-specific social and cultural business characteristics, subjective measures of family businesses, behavioral approaches to family owners' decision-making and directors' personal, psychological and social factors, remain largely untested. Additionally, there is a notable research gap concerning the relationship between IFRS, capital structure and EM.Originality/valueThis study’s contributions lie in its comprehensive literature review, identification of research trends and gaps, and its potential to guide future research endeavors in the domain of EM practices in FFs.

Trends and development in perioperative enteral nutrition: a systematic bibliometric analysis.

This research aims to explore the intellectual landscape of studies in perioperative enteral nutrition (PEN) and identify trends and research frontiers in the field. Scientometric research was conducted through the analysis of bibliographic records from the Web of Science Core Collection Database for the period 2014-2023. Analyses performed using CiteSpace software included cooperation network analysis, reference co-citation analysis, and keywords co-occurrence analysis. The analysis included 3,671 valid records in the final dataset. Findings indicate an upward trend in annual publications, with the United States leading in research output and Harvard University as the top publishing institution. The Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition was identified as the most productive journal. Notable research hotspots include enhanced recovery after surgery, early enteral nutrition, intestinal failure, short bowel syndrome, abdominal surgery. Evidence-based articles have emerged as the predominant literature type. Future research trends are anticipated to focus on gut microbiota and patients with congenital heart disease. Our study provides a comprehensive analysis of the publication volume, contributions by country/region and institutions, journal outlets, and reference and keyword clusters in the field of PEN over the decade. The findings provide valuable insights for researchers, policymakers, and clinicians, helping them comprehend the research landscape, identify gaps, and shape future research directions in this field.

Countdown to The 2030 Global Goals: A Bibliometric Analysis of Research Trends on SDG 2 - Zero Hunger

As we approach the deadline for achieving the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which is less than a decade away, it is crucial for researchers and research institutions at both national and international levels to conduct rigorous scientific assessments of the progress made towards these goals. The assessment is of utmost importance as it will provide valuable insights and information to political leaders and other stakeholders, guiding their actions and efforts towards successfully attaining the SDGs by the year 2030. This study aimed at providing vivid descriptions of the SDG 2 – zero hunger-related research endeavour. It employed bibliometric analysis and geographical patterns of SDG 2-related publications extracted from Scopus database from 2015 to 2023. A total of 397 documents were extracted where Sustainability journal ranked 1st among the journal outlets of zero hunger-related publications. The publication of zero hunger-related documents grew from 1.5% in 2016 to 29.7% in 2022. Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and Chinese Academy of Sciences were the top 2 institutions publishing zero hunger-related documents while the lead article was published by Journal of Cleaner Production with 128 citations. The funding sponsors of SDG 2-related publications were dominated by sponsors from developed countries (such as China, Belgium, United States, and United Kingdom) while no funding sponsors from developing countries were among the top 10. The United States and United Kingdom were the two most productive countries while only one African country (South Africa) made the list of top 10 countries publishing zero hunger-related documents. This study provided political leaders and key stakeholders with in-depth understanding of the SDG 2-related research activities and highlighted research funding and collaboration gaps facing the developing nations.

Therefore, it is imperative to study COVID-19 preventive behavior and digital media. Despite extensive examinations on this matter, a distinct lack of bibliometric exploration has been observed. This study involves a bibliometric analysis utilizing data obtained from the Scopus database. Following a comprehensive search and screening procedure, our research examined a total of 68 articles. The findings indicate that Liu, Romer, and Jamieson emerge as the most influential researchers in the realm of studies focused on COVID-19 preventive behavior and digital media. The US and China are observed as the most referenced countries for research on COVID-19 preventive behavior and digital media. The International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, PLoS ONE, and the Journal of Medical Internet Research stand out as the three most productive and referenced journals in studies relating to this research topic. Concerning the state of the art, fundamentally, existing research refers to five major topics: the influence of Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) factors, the influence of COVID-19 coverage (infodemiology), the influence of media exposure/information and Health Belief Model (HBM) factors, the influence of e-health literacy, knowledge, and attitude, and the role of digital media in public health intervention strategy to prevent the spread of COVID-19. In conclusion, this bibliometric study sheds light on the multifaceted landscape of COVID-19 preventive behavior and digital media research. By delving into researcher analyses, preferred publication outlets, and the topical state of the art, this study contributes a novel perspective to the existing literature.

Leveraging on Blockchain Technology for the Sustainability of Real Estate Practice: A Systematic Review

Blockchain technology (BCTech) in real estate is innovative and full of potential, even though it is not widely accepted and scarcely applied. To establish the potentials of BCTech in the real estate sector, this study used a systematic review of the literature found in Researchgate, ScienceDirect, Semantic Scholar, IEEE Xplore, and Google searches. This was done with a view to ascertaining the current challenges in real estate practice and the potential benefits of applying BCTech to mitigate or eliminate these challenges. A total of 99 publications from 2016 to 2022 were examined, and their contents were assessed using descriptive statistical tools and presented in charts and tables. Based on the review, BCTech can provide platforms for tokenized ownership, smart contracts, quick transactions and cost reduction. Moreover, the outcome also showed that some countries have applied BCTech to land registration, with a few others to record keeping and real estate tokenization. In addition, the majority of the research efforts (55%) were from journal outlets published between 2020 and 2022. Finally, BCTech offers secure and transparent platforms for real estate stakeholders; hence, they have a lot to gain by encouraging and embracing its adoption. The study concluded that though BCTech is not yet widely used, it has a lot of potential to offer in terms of the sustainability of the real estate industry.

ABSTRACTThis article explains the affordances of animation to create compelling and emotionally resonant stories for global consumption by analyzing the animated depictions of the tunnel used by Mexican cartel leader Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán to escape prison in 2015. Animation contributed to the international recognition of the tunnel and El Chapo’s escape story by rendering select characteristics from this otherwise illegible structure into easily communicative excerpts across popular culture sites and journalistic outlets. This analysis considers several features of animation as a communication medium that make it appealing for globally resonant stories: lack of linguistic markers, scalability, vividness. Finally, the article concludes with a critique of the obfuscations that may result from centering animated depictions of illicit infrastructures in journalistic and government reports, particularly the erasure of broader political implications in favor of visual spectacle.

Research on Yachting: A Systematic Review of the Literature

The multidisciplinary nature of research on yachting leads to a need for a synthesis of prior findings. To fill this gap, this article presents a systematic review of the literature. Although the search conducted uses terms such as sailboat and cruising, the study focuses on yachting, including both ownership or chartering. The review provides first a descriptive view of the fields, journal outlets, authors, and years of publications. Next, the study shows four mainstreams identified: (1) innovation, (2) consumer experience (3) sustainability, and (4) yacht-related events. Based on the description of prior findings, future research needs are identified.

Trends in research on dietary behavior and cardiovascular disease from 2002 to 2022: a bibliometric analysis.

Dietary behaviors and cardiovascular disease are two major health issues that have attracted a lot of attention from researchers worldwide. In this study, we aimed to provide a comprehensive analysis of the publication trends, authorship patterns, institutional affiliations, country/region contributions, journal outlets, highly cited documents, and keyword clusters in the field of dietary behaviors and cardiovascular disease research over the past two decades. We conducted a systematic literature review of peer-reviewed articles published from 2002 to 2022 in the Web of Science Core Collection database. We extracted and analyzed data on the annual publication volume, authorship patterns, institutional affiliations, country/region contributions, journal outlets, highly cited documents, and keyword clusters using bibliometric methods and visualization tools. Our study analyzed 3,904 articles, including 702 reviews and 3,202 research articles. The results revealed a continuous increase in the number of publications in this field over the past two decades. The top 10 authors, institutions, and countries/regions with the highest publication output were identified, indicating the leading contributors to this field. Moreover, the most frequently cited documents and highly clustered keywords were identified, providing insights into the research themes and topics in this field. Our study provides a comprehensive analysis of the publication trends, authorship patterns, institutional affiliations, country/region contributions, journal outlets, highly cited documents, and keyword clusters in the field of dietary behaviors and cardiovascular disease research over the past two decades. The findings provide valuable information for researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders to understand the research landscape, identify research gaps, and develop future research directions in this field.

US Regional Newspapers and Instagram: A Content Analysis

Journalism outlets are regularly looking for ways to reach their audiences. One of those ways that has increased in popularity over time is social media. However, little is known about how to best create content that connects to the audiences through these platforms. The current exploratory study utilizes quantitative content analysis to understand how three regional newspapers in the United States utilized Instagram for content distribution. Regional newspapers were selected to have non-elite levels of funding and staffing. Findings demonstrate three approaches to the platform from each of the outlets studied in terms of topic, visual approach, multimedia utilized, and more. The user responses to the content are also discussed.

Advancements in Layered Double Hydroxide-Based Chemotherapeutic Nanosystems for Cancer Treatment

Globally, Cancer therapy is still a major issue. With the latest developments in nanotechnology, layered double hydroxide (LDH)-based nanosystems are receiving special attention due to their pH dependent biodegradability, superior biocompatibility, easy surface modification, anion exchange capacity and high chemical stability, giving rise to great potential for cancer therapy. By intercalating inorganic, organic, or bio molecules into their lamellar lattice, new hybrid materials with dual or multi-functional features, including anticancer capabilities, can be developed from layered double hydroxide (LDH). Despite the fact that outstanding research has been published, few review papers address these essential and promising discoveries to stimulate the ongoing development of LDH-based nanosystems in the field of cancer therapy. This paper therefore study focuses on the most recent advancements in LDH-based chemotherapeutic nanosystems for cancer treatment. The information utilized in this review was gathered from studies that have previously been published and were retrieved from several Journal outlets. These reports dealt with the usage of layered doubled hydroxide-based chemotherapeutic nanosystems for the treatment of cancer. The research demonstrates that layered double hydroxides may be utilized to develop single or composite nanosystems that distribute therapeutic components precisely without causing cumulative damage for the field of nanomedicine.

Nascent entrepreneurship : A bibliometric analysis and systematic literature review

Nascent entrepreneurship studies contribute to the understanding of entrepreneurial intention of individuals which in turn has significant effects on economic growth and labour markets. This paper presents a systematic literature review of nascent entrepreneurship research focused articles published between 2000 and 2020 based on bibliometric analysis and quantitative and qualitative text analysis. A corpus of 257 journal articles was assembled to provide insights on the most important themes and trends in the research stream as well as focusing on the most prominent journal outlets and influential authors. In-depth examination of the 30 most cited articles serves as a basis for proposed systematisation of factors influencing nascent entrepreneurial intentions. A summary of promising research directions and emerging themes is also presented.

Origin stories of local journalism entrepreneurs

This paper investigates the origin stories of local journalism entrepreneurs in the UK, based on 57 in-depth interviews and a survey of 116 practitioners, carried out in 2020–2021. In doing so, it focuses on the motivations and identities of editors of what are variably known as community journalism outlets and hyperlocals. These outlets represent a growing sector which has filled the gap left behind by the closure and consolidation of local and regional newspapers. Many have been established over the past decade, frequently by journalists previously working for traditional media organisations. Drawing on insights from the field of social enterprise, the article shows that, like other social entrepreneurs, community journalists are driven by a range of motivations: Their decisions to start up new outlets are frequently informed by economic conditions, including gaps in the local news market. But more importantly, they also tend to be strongly influenced by normative ideals, including the desire to improve their communities through news provision. The distinctive articulation of these normative ideals demonstrates that local journalism entrepreneurs embody distinctive professional identities associated with conceptions of what constitutes “good” local journalism. These are tied to the provision of news which authentically captures the experience of the local community. Editors’ origin stories reveal an emphasis on authority grounded in knowledge of, and a passionate attachment to, the local community.
