First Indication of Solar ^{8}B Neutrinos through Coherent Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering in PandaX-4T.

The PandaX-4T liquid xenon detector at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory is used to measure the solar ^{8}B neutrino flux by detecting neutrinos through coherent scattering with xenon nuclei. Data samples requiring the coincidence of scintillation and ionization signals (paired), as well as unpaired ionization-only signals (US2), are selected with energy threshold of approximately 1.1keV (0.33keV) nuclear recoil energy. Combining the commissioning run and the first science run of PandaX-4T, a total exposure of 1.20 and 1.04 tonne·year are collected for the paired and US2, respectively. After unblinding, 3 and 332 events are observed with an expectation of 2.8±0.5 and 251±32 background events, for the paired and US2 data, respectively. A combined analysis yields a best-fit ^{8}B neutrino signal of 3.5 (75) events from the paired (US2) data sample, with ∼37% uncertainty, and the background-only hypothesis is disfavored at 2.64σ significance. This gives a solar ^{8}B neutrino flux of (8.4±3.1)×10^{6} cm^{-2} s^{-1}, consistent with the standard solar model prediction. It is also the first indication of solar ^{8}B neutrino "fog" in a dark matter direct detection experiment.

Production cross sections of 102mRh and 108mAg in proton bombed natPb target with 400 MeV energy

The accelerator-driven subcritical system (ADS) is a competitive option for next-generation nuclear energy systems. Production cross sections of long-lived residual radioactive nuclides in a proton-nuclide reaction are basic quantities for the calculation of accumulated radioactivity in the use of ADS systems. This work presents the production cross sections of 102mRh and 108mAg in a natural lead (natPb) target activated by 400 MeV protons. The natPb target was irradiated by a 400 MeV proton beam in NRC “Kurchatov Institute” and measured two decades later by a low background gamma spectrometer in China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL). A spectrum analysis method based on simulated single-isotope spectrum and Bayesian peak fitting was employed to compute the activities and production cross sections of the residual nuclides. The experimentally measured cross-sections for 102mRh and 108mAg were 0.72 ± 0.05 mb and 0.76 ± 0.09 mb respectively. These values are approximately twice as high as those predicted by the QGSP_INCLXX_HP model and fall within the range predicted by the INCL4+ABLA and LAQGSM+GEM2 models for mass numbers A=102 and A=108. These findings offer new experimental insights for ADS research and provide a practical benchmark for theoretical models concerning proton-lead interactions.

Design of a triggerless readout electronics system for CDEX-50

Direct detection of light-mass dark matter is a frontier topic in international physics research. The reduction of system threshold is important in order to improve the sensitivity of light-mass dark matter detection. The scientific goal of the China Dark Matter Experiment (CDEX) at Jinping Underground Laboratory in China is to detect WIMPs utilizing a high-purity germanium array detector. CDEX-10 achieved the most sensitive results in the 4 to 5 GeV/c 2 range. CDEX-50 aims to achieve an energy threshold of 100 eV, which significantly increases data bandwidth and complicates the implementation of noise reduction algorithms, thereby posing challenges to the readout electronics system. In this paper, a triggerless readout electronics system based on FPGA-GPU is designed for CDEX-50, which can achieve full energy range detection from 100 eV to 10 MeV. A verification prototype of a triggerless electronics system utilizing a Broad Energy Germanium (BEGe) detector has been developed to test the performance of high-bandwidth transmission and data processing. The results demonstrate that the bit error rate for the high-speed transmission link of the triggerless readout electronics system is below 1015. Furthermore, the FPGA-GPU transmission bandwidth, utilizing P2P DMA, achieves 100.2 Gbps, and the mean filter implemented on the GPU is capable of processing a 64 Gbps data stream in real-time. These results provide foundation for the design of the triggerless readout electronics system for CDEX-50.

Structural design of the acrylic vessel for the Jinping Neutrino Experiment

The Jinping neutrino experiment is designed to have multiple purposes in the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. Following the acrylic vessel design requirements proposal, a structural scheme has been developed and optimized. Subsequently, the stability of the acrylic shell structure is calculated using finite element analysis, as well as the load-bearing capacities under various working conditions. Further, the effects of temperature changes, rope failures, and Young's modulus of the ropes on the static behavior of the structure are analyzed. The results indicated that the stress level and structural displacement of the structure scheme satisfy the design requirements, as well as the stability of the vessel under compression. The acrylic vessel is safe in the given working conditions. Temperature is not a controlling factor in structural design. The structural scheme ensures basic safety if one vertical rope, two vertical ropes, or one horizontal rope fails.

Searching for 76Ge neutrinoless double beta decay with the CDEX-1B experiment* *Supported by the National Key Research and Development Program of China (2017YFA0402201, 2022YFA1604701, 2022YFA1605000) and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (12322511, 12175112, 12005111, 11725522)

We operated a p-type point contact high purity germanium (PPCGe) detector (CDEX-1B, 1.008 kg) in the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) for 500.3 days to search for neutrinoless double beta ( ) decay of 76Ge. A total of 504.3 kg day effective exposure data was accumulated. The anti-coincidence and the multi/single-site event (MSE/SSE) discrimination methods were used to suppress the background in the energy region of interest (ROI, 1989–2089 keV for this work) with a factor of 23. A background level of 0.33 counts/ (keV kg yr) was realized. The lower limit on the half life of 76Ge decay was constrained as , corresponding to the upper limits on the effective Majorana neutrino mass: 3.2–7.5 .

Factor analysis and GA-BP-ANN prediction of nitrogen diffusion behavior in underground laboratory under ventilation conditions

Nitrogen is widely used in various laboratories as a suppressive gas and a protective gas. Once nitrogen leaks and accumulates in a such confined space, it will bring serious threats to the experimental staff. Especially in underground tunnels or underground laboratories where there is no natural wind, the threat is more intense. In this work, the ventilation design factors and potential leakage factors are identified by taking the leakage and diffusion of a large liquid nitrogen tank in China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) as an example. Based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) research, the effects of fresh air inlet position, fresh air velocity, exhaust outlet position, leakage hole position, leakage hole size, and leaked nitrogen mass flow rate on nitrogen diffusion behavior in specific environments are discussed in detail from the perspectives of nitrogen concentration field and nitrogen diffusion characteristics. The influencing factors are parameterized, and the Latin hypercube sampling (LHS) is used to uniformly sample within the specified range of each factor to obtain samples that can represent the whole sample space. The nitrogen concentration is measured by numerical value, and the nitrogen diffusion characteristics are measured by category. The GA-BP-ANN numerical regression and classification regression models for nitrogen concentration prediction and nitrogen diffusion characteristics prediction are established. By using various rating indicators to evaluate the performance of the trained model, it is found that models have high accuracy and recognition rate, indicating that it is effective in predicting and determining the concentration value and diffusion characteristics of nitrogen according to ventilation factors and potential leakage factors. The research results can provide a theoretical reference for the parametric design of the ventilation system.

Offline data processing software for a Li2MoO4 bolometer demonstration experiment at China Jinping Underground Laboratory

A cryogenic scintillating bolometer demonstration experiment utilizing Li2MoO4 crystals is proposed for exploring neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ) at China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL). The hardware and software framework R&D for the entire detection system is currently in progress. In this study, we present a comprehensible offline data processing software designed for this project. The software facilitates event trigger and reconstruction by applying an optimal filter and Monte Carlo truth stream data generator. Based on the simulated stream data, a significant noise suppression and an increase on energy resolution are obtained, with an improvement of approximately 40% comparing to that estimated from the original pulse waveform.

Effect of Mineral Composition and Particle Size on the Failure Characteristics and Mechanisms of Marble in the China Jinping Underground Laboratory.

In deep underground engineering, the deformation, failure characteristics, and mechanism of surrounding rock under the influence of grain sizes and mineral compositions are not clear. Based on CJPL-II variously colored marbles, the differences in grain size and mineral composition of the marble were analyzed by thin-section analysis and XRD tests, and the effect of intermediate principal stress on the mechanical properties of marble was investigated. Both SEM and microfracture analysis were coupled to reveal the failure mechanisms. The results highlight that the crack initiation strength, damage strength, peak strength, and elasticity modulus of Jinping marble exhibit an increasing trend with an increase in intermediate principal stress, while the peak strain initially increases and subsequently decreases. Moreover, this study established negative correlations between marble strength, brittleness characteristics, and fracture angle with grain size, whereas positive correlations were identified with the content of quartz, sodium feldspar, and the magnitude of the intermediate principal stress. The microcrack density in marble was found to increase with larger grain sizes and decrease with elevated quartz and sodium feldspar content, as well as with increasing intermediate principal stress. Notably, as the intermediate principal stress intensifies and grain size diminishes, the transgranular tensile failure of marble becomes more conspicuous. These research findings contribute to the effective implementation of disaster prevention and control strategies.

Improvement on the linearity response of PandaX-4T with new photomultiplier tube bases

With the expanding reach of physics, xenon-based detectors such as PandaX-4T in the China Jinping Underground Laboratory aim to cover an energy range from sub-keV to multi-MeV. A linear response of the photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) is required for both scintillation and electroluminescence signals. Through a dedicated bench test, we investigated the cause of the non-linear response in the Hamamatsu R11410-23 PMTs used in PandaX-4T. The saturation and suppression of the PMT waveform observed during the commissioning of PandaX-4T were caused by the high-voltage divider base. The bench test data validated the de-saturation algorithm used in the PandaX-4T data analysis. We also confirmed the improvement in linearity of a new PMT base design with three more low radioactivity capacitors at later dynodes, which will be used to upgrade the PMT readout system in PandaX-4T.

Detection of astrophysical neutrinos at prospective locations of dark matter detectors

We study the prospects for detection of solar, atmospheric neutrino, and diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB) fluxes at future large-scale dark matter detectors through both electron and nuclear recoils. We specifically examine how the detection prospects change for several prospective detector locations [Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF), SNOlab, Gran Sasso, China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL), and Kamioka] and improve upon the statistical methodologies used in previous studies. Because of its ability to measure lower neutrino energies than other locations, we find that the best prospects for the atmospheric neutrino flux are at the SURF location, while the prospects are weakest at CJPL because it is restricted to higher neutrino energies. On the contrary, the prospects for the DSNB are best at CJPL, due largely to the reduced atmospheric neutrino background at this location. Including full detector resolution and efficiency models, the CNO component of the solar flux is detectable via the electron recoil channel with exposures of ∼103 ton-yr for all locations. These results highlight the benefits for employing two detector locations, one at high and one at low latitude. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Background experiment of the low energy x-ray telescope detectors on insight-HXMT

The low energy x-ray telescope (LE) is one of the main instruments of the insight-hard x-ray modulation telescope, the first x-ray astronomical satellite of China. The scientific objectives of the LE focus on the scanning and pointed observations of the x-ray sources in the soft x-ray band (1–13 keV). In order to complete the observation tasks and accurately analyze the background information of the LE, it is essential to obtain the background data of the detectors. Therefore, we designed an LE background experiment. The experiment began with an underground background experiment in the China Jinping Underground Laboratory with a rock of a thickness of 2400 m, followed by a ground background experiment. These two experiments lasted for a long time, and through comparison and analysis of the background data, it was found that underground laboratories significantly shielded cosmic rays. In addition, the background of detectors in the underground experiment was more than one order of magnitude lower than that in the ground experiment. The experiments also revealed multiple x-ray fluorescence peaks of various elements in the background, including silicon from the detector itself, erbium in the ceramic substrate, and copper in the mounting plate. The anti-coincidence design of detectors was observed to reduce the x-ray fluorescence peaks of silicon. By comparing the background flux obtained with the background flux in the orbit, it was found that the background generated by radioactive substances inside the LE detector is very low. Within the energy range of less than 7.5 keV, the flux in the orbit is about 0.012 counts/s/keV, the ground flux is ∼3 × 10−3 counts/s/keV, and the underground flux is about 1.5 × 10−4 counts/s/keV. However, the flux in the orbit significantly increases above 7.5 keV, which does not occur in both the ground and underground background experiments. These results provide reference and guidance for scientific teams and instrument teams to analyze the data of the low energy x-ray telescope.

Preliminary research and scheme design of deep underground in situ geo-information detection experiment for Geology in Time

The deep earth, deep sea, and deep space are the main parts of the national “three deep” strategy, which is in the forefront of the strategic deployment clearly defined in China’s 14th Five-Year Plan (2021–2025) and the Long-Range Objectives Through the Year 2035. It is important to reveal the evolutionary process and mechanism of deep tectonics to understand the earth’s past, present and future. The academic connotation of Geology in Time has been given for the first time, which refers to the multi-field evolution response process of geological bodies at different time and spatial scales caused by geological processes inside and outside the Earth. Based on the deep in situ detection space and the unique geological environment of China Jinping Underground Laboratory, the scientific issue of the correlation mechanism and law between deep internal time-varying and shallow geological response is given attention. Innovative research and frontier exploration on deep underground in situ geo-information detection experiments for Geology in Time are designed to be carried out, which will have the potential to explore the driving force of Geology in Time, reveal essential laws of deep earth science, and explore innovative technologies in deep underground engineering.

A new large area MCP-PMT for high energy detection

20-inch Large area photomultiplier tube based on microchannel plate (MCP-PMT) is newly developed in China. It is widely used in high energy detection experiments such as Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), China JinPing underground Laboratory (CJPL) and Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). To overcome the poor time performance of the existing MCP-PMT, a new design of large area MCP-PMT is proposed in this paper. Three-dimensional models are developed in CST Studio Suite to validate its feasibility. Effects of the size and bias voltage of the focusing electrodes and MCP configuration on the collection efficiency (CE) and time performance are studied in detail using the finite integral technique and Monte Carlo method. Based on the simulation results, the optimized operating and geometry parameters are chosen. Results show that the mean ratio of photoelectrons landing on the MCP active area is 97.5%. The acceptance fraction of the impinging photoelectrons is close to 100% due to the emission of multiple secondary electrons when hitting the MCP top surface. The mean transit time spread (TTS) of the photoelectrons from the photocathode is 1.48 ns.

Development of the ultra-high sensitivity radon monitor based on electrostatic collection method

The radioactive decay of radon (Rn-222) and its progenies are significant background sources in an extremely low background environment, interfering with investigation like detecting dark matter and observing neutrinos. In this paper, a 1000 L ultra-high sensitivity radon monitor for China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) based on electrostatic collection and Au-Si surface barrier detector was developed. The monitor is capable of distinguishing Rn-220 from the energy spectrum and effectively eliminating any interference caused by Rn-220. At an absolute air humidity of 0.02 g/m3, the scale factor of the monitor is: 17.35 ± 0.88 (counts/day)/(mBq/m3). Moreover, it achieves a remarkable lower limit of detection of 0.17 mBq/m3 in a single-day measurement. These findings demonstrate the suitability of the ultra-high sensitivity radon monitor for diverse scenarios demanding stringent background requirements.

Dynamic mechanical characteristics of deep Jinping marble in complex stress environments

To reveal the dynamic mechanical characteristics of deep rocks, a series of impact tests under triaxial static stress states corresponding to depths of 300–2400 m were conducted. The results showed that both the strain rates and the stress environments in depth significantly affect the mechanical characteristics of rocks. The sensitivity of strain rate to the dynamic strength and deformation modulus shows a negative correlation with depth, indicating that producing penetrative cracks in deep environments is more difficult when damage occurs. The dynamic strength shows a tendency to decrease and then increase slightly, but decreases sharply finally. Transmissivity demonstrates a similar trend as that of strength, whereas reflectivity indicates the opposite trend. Furthermore, two critical depths with high dynamically induced hazard possibilities based on the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) were proposed for deep engineering. The first critical depth is 600–900 m, beyond which the sensitivity of rock dynamic characteristics to the strain rate and restraint of circumferential stress decrease, causing instability of surrounding rocks under axial stress condition. The second one lies at 1500–1800 m, where the wave impedance and dynamic strength of deep surrounding rocks drop sharply, and the dissipation energy presents a negative value. It suggests that the dynamic instability of deep surrounding rocks can be divided into dynamic load dominant and dynamic load induced types, depending on the second critical depth.

Performance of the 1-ton prototype neutrino detector at CJPL-I

China Jinping Underground Laboratory provides an ideal site for solar, geo-, and supernova neutrino studies. With a prototype neutrino detector running since 2017, containing 1-ton liquid scintillator, we tested its experimental hardware, performed the detector calibration and simulation, and measured its radioactive backgrounds, as an early stage of the Jinping Neutrino Experiment (JNE). We investigated the radon background and implemented the nitrogen sealing technology to control it. This paper presents the details of these studies and will serve as a key reference for the construction and optimization of the future large detector of JNE.

Search for exotic interactions of solar neutrinos in the CDEX-10 experiment

We investigate exotic neutrino interactions using the 205.4−kg·day dataset from the CDEX-10 experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. New constraints on the mass and couplings of new gauge bosons are presented. Two nonstandard neutrino interactions are considered: a U(1)B–L gauge-boson-induced interaction between an active neutrino and electron/nucleus, and a dark-photon-induced interaction between a sterile neutrino and electron/nucleus via kinetic mixing with a photon. This work probes an unexplored parameter space involving sterile neutrino coupling with a dark photon. Exotic Dark Matter Search with the CDEX-10 Experiment at China’s Jinping Underground Laboratory

A search for exotic dark matter (DM) in the sub-GeV mass range has been conducted using 205kg day data taken from a p-type point contact germanium detector of the CDEX-10 experiment at China's Jinping underground laboratory. New low-mass dark matter searching channels, neutral current fermionic DM absorption (χ+A→ν+A) and DM-nucleus 3→2 scattering (χ+χ+A→ϕ+A), have been analyzed with an energy threshold of 160eVee. No significant signal was found; thus new limits on the DM-nucleon interaction cross section are set for both models at the sub-GeV DM mass region. A cross section limit for the fermionic DM absorption is set to be 2.5×10^{-46} cm^{2} (90%C.L.) at DM mass of 10 MeV/c^{2}. For the DM-nucleus 3→2 scattering scenario, limits are extended to DM mass of 5 and 14 MeV/c^{2} for the massless dark photon and bound DM final state, respectively.
